It's such a bloody wonder that this thread never got beyond V1. Such a wonderful phone and good camera features that no one even thought of using. Hmmm....
*
Because questions are shamelessly directed to the first page (which encourages reading! Budaya membaca!). Plus the lack of 'add me to front page' posts (which I believe accounts for about 20% of the other threads' posts). Not to mention the outrageous pricing policy of Ori set Desire Z.

Yo people!

‎"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC

desire z rom version of 1.34 and 1.72 have an unlocked bootloader.

1.84 is locked, but easily downgrade and enjoy unlocked bootloader's features.

how does one tell which version one has?.........sorry for noob questions....

also, these higher capacity batteries advertised above, anyone used before, and does it really significantly increase usage time?........i average 3 days pure gsm phone use, and 1 day with heavy 3g/wifi use..........

Let me attempt to explain the bootloader issue here:

First you need to understand there's 3 parts to a phone's software: the ROM, the recovery image, and the bootloader. (there's more but i'll leave that out).

When you first boot the phone, the bootloader will call out the ROM and checks it to make sure it is untampered with. Then it will give a green light for the ROM to boot. However, to load a custom ROM, this bootloader needs to be bypassed, or have it's checks switched off. Then only a custom recovery can be flashed, and thus a custom ROM be loaded.

The thing with normal unsigned bootloader is that it only takes a common exploit or even just a fastboot command to unlock it. The new bootloaders HTC (and motorola, I believe) has is that it has an extra layer of protection in the form of a factory signature. This signature is 256-bit encryption and of coz is virtually unhackable (if it can, the Incredible S and Desire S would've been hacked already, and the whole bootloader issue wouldn't have surfaced).

The HTC Desire Z was actually in this 'unhackable' state as well. But fortunately an exploit was found by the devs on #g2root and were able to achieve perm root. The Desire HD coincidentally was able to apply the same exploit to achieve perm root.

HTC buckled up and reinforced the bootloader security. The Thunderbolt was deemed unhackable but a key was leaked (IINM) and root was obtained. The IS and DS weren't so lucky this time round.

Of course it's a non-issue if one is not interested in rooting the phone. But then again if one isn't interested in the rooting business then one would've went with an iPhone already. :-D

With that announcement, HTC will no longer lock their bootloader. Meaning less time wasted by devs on rooting the device, and more time on making awesome ROMs.

I'm a bit worried that if they open the lock to one part, they lock another part of the phone. Hopefully it doesn't happen.

All vital phone info can be checked under 'About Phone'. Read the manual to find where it is.

that is not always true......i have no intention of hacking or rooting my phone, but my dislike of apple is such that i will never buy apple propriety products........

my phone is vital to my work, hence i cannot ever allow the phone to die and loose all information, so i will not ever root it, don't see the need to either..........however, if it ever become a spare phone, then maybe......

i had a bad experience with upgrading wind mobile 6.0 to 6.1, so i fear the worst......... smile.gif

Aiyo that's a jab to iOS only la. Android is a very productive platform. Even if it's not for rooting there's a lot of reason to adopt Android. Saja cakap ma... haha

Thanks DJFoo.

yeah i went to the front page after i posted. sorry for wasting 1 post.

Anyway, my phone was bought in Feb from Maxis.

It died on monday.

Died as it:
i felt the vibration in my pocket, took it out, no power. couldnt turn on in any way. so contacted online customer care, told me to hard reset. couldnt do it coz it doesnt even boot.

had to send for warranty.

Went to service center in Plaza berjaya but the technicians cant worked out why as well, tried to change the battery coz suspected battery problem, but no luck. the phone itself is dead. they also dunno why.

so like i said, sent for warrant yesterday and needs about 3 days before i can get it back, if it's fixed...

Anyone had a similar experience? your Desire Z just died like that?

It doesn't wobble. The hinge is spring loaded, but just weak to not have that snapping sensation.
