Differences b/w Desire Z and T-Mobile G2

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Some say the DHD and DZ are using essentially the same processor, but DZ's is underclocked to 800MHz. This is due to them both having identical GPUs (Adreno 205) but difference CPU clockspeed.

Here's a link to a stock 1.34.707.3 Desire Z ROM nandroid backup provided by fellow owner Dixon93

---------------------------------------

Custom ROMs.

- Custom ROMs are made for HTC Vision. So the same ROM are supposedly safely flash-able on both DZ and G2.

- ALWAYS MAKE A ***NANDROID BACKUP*** BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING. I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS.
It is also recommended you backup a copy of the nandroid backup onto your computer or somewhere safe.

- These ROMs usually come with a custom kernel so overclocking is enabled. You need to separately download an overclocking app (like CPUTuner ot SetCPU) though.

- Battery drain will be apparently increased after flashing a new ROM. Run a power cycle to calibrate the stats. Battery stats wipe not necessary (some say it will increase battery drain even more).

- In experimental builds (eg CM7 nightlies) expect some bugs here and there (like wifi not working, GPS not working, bad reception etc). Do report back to the respective threads on XDA for feedback.

- Follow all instructions by the chef. He ask you to wipe data and dalvik cache, you do it. If got problem after flashing new ROM, clearing data and dalvik cache and reflashing the ROM usually solves the problem.

- For flashing AOSP-Based ROMs on a Desire Z, you will need to flash the keypad fix everytime because only Sense ROMs has the keypad mappings shipping with it.

======= Custom ROMs (Pre-Rooted) =========

1) Cyanogen - CyanogenMod
CyanogenMod is a custom ROM based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It is basically a ROM built straight from the ingredients provided by Google, like how a manufacturer would. It features various optimisations.

- CyanogenMod Stable or Here

- CyanogenMod RC or Here

- CyanogenMod Nightlies or Here

- Google Apps or Here

2) RMK - Virtuous
RMK works with various other devs to port official Sense builds either from ROM dumps or from RUUs.

- Virtuous Sense or here
This build is as close a custom stock Desire Z ROM can be. Built from the latest Desire Z RUU.

- Virtuous Unity or here
This is a Sense 3.0 ROM built from porting the HTC Pyramid RUU.

- Virtuous G-Lite or here
This build is as close a custom stock G2 ROM can be. Built from the latest G2 RUU.

- Virtuous DoubleShot Port (MyTouch 4G Slide) or here
This build is a HTC DoubleShot port.

3) MIUI
MIUI is a custom ROM based on CyanogenMod that is heavily customised by a team of Chinese devs. It resembles the iOS UI in many aspects.

- by MIUI.us or Here
Official port by the MIUI team.

- by OsiMood
Optimised version by Osimood.

I've decided to only include the frequently updated ones. The rest can be found on XDA's G2/DZ Android Development Forum

======== One-time releases =========
These ROMs are one-time releases and will not be updated. They are rooted stock ROMs without modifications, ie shipped applications (bloatware) intact.

- [ROM][7/14/2011] RMK Vision Gingerbread Sense r2 :: 2.42.405.2
Rooted stock Desire Z Gingerbread build 2.42

- [ROM][02/18/11][WWE] Vision Sense 1.82.405.1 Untouched: Rooted/Deodexed
Rooted stock Desire Z Froyo Build 1.82

- [ROM][04/28/11] TMOUS G2 Gingerbread 2.13.531.5 Untouched (from TEST leak)
Rooted stock G2 Gingerbread build 2.13

========= RADIO ==========
Do ample research before attempting to flash radios.

- [RADIO] HTC VISION RADIO's (PC10IMG.zip Update Files & .img files)
- [REF] Coorelation between radio image and libhtc_ril.so
- [PATCH][4/3/11] Radio Interface Layer: Library to Radio Firmware Automatcher

========= SHIPPED ROMS =========
These flash radio, HBOOT, recovery, ROM.

FAQ:

What is root?
http://www.androidcentral.com/rooting-it-me-some-qa

1) Phone Finder on HTCSense.com doesn't work! Anyone can get it to work?
- HTCSense.com is still considered to be 'under construction' at the moment. Please disregard its existence for the time being.

2) Hinge?
- Some say that later builds have a stiffer spring. Some say you'll get used to it. HTC says it's a design intent.

3) Cases and Screen protector?
- Read next post

4) Will this phone be getting an Android 2.3 update?
- Read
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-desire-hd-des...ear+(SlashGear)

5) What is ROM? Nandroid? Flash?
- Read
http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/60...al-rom-faq.html

6) APN?
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1473755&hl=
clear cache for messages and messagesCS if stuff dun work.

7) OMG Boot up so fast!!!
- If you power down your phone, and boot back up after some time, the boot up time is short (~10 secs). This feature is present in new HTC android phones, and is best a hibernate function found on PCs. A full reboot will take about 1-2 minutes (at most), which occurs after you remove the battery. Also if you have performed a full reboot, allow the widgets and stuff to fully load before scrolling around, or not you'll think the phone is lagging.

8) Visionary?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/easyroot/

9) GPS broke in CM7
- guhl's original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
- Use this the EFS wipe flashable zip from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044992

Known bugs/issues

Software:

1) [RANDOM] Text field move away from sight when tapped to input text and needs to be dragged back into view. (citations needed)

Solution - Drag text field back into view. No known permanent solution yet. Seems to appear on other androids too.

Hardware:

1) [RANDOM]Phone powers down when screen is sleeping and only able to wake after pulling battery. Reported in the following links:

XDA DZ/G2 Forum
Mobile01 Forum (Mandarin)

(aka 睡死 (sleep dead) on mandarin forums, or Sleeping Beauty, as I prefer tongue.gif)

Solution - Return for warranty claim ASAP, if possible request for one-to-one claim.

Additional info:
To test for this issue, just leave the phone on overnight without charging (like charge the phone fully, unplug then leave it overnight). Set an alarm if possible. Use GPS from time to time (like for GPSTest to lock coordinate then close the app).
Easier to test if you can survive with minimal phone usage (so as to maximise battery discharge duration without charging)
My situation was to leave it overnight for 2 nights. By the 2nd night usually sleeping beauty will occur, always before my alarm was supposed to ring.
Recommend observe for 2 weeks.

Update: it seems the percentage of affected units is still relatively low.

2) [GRADUAL] Hinge becomes loose(er) than initially purchased.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...highlight=hinge

Solution - Manual spring tightening and here's a video of it, and another video of it, magnetic strip application, rubber band

You can purchase the HTC Desire Z from various sources. Below are the common ways users here obtain it:

1) Maxis.
Purchase at RRP without contract, or with one.

2) LYN Sellers @ Garage Sales
Usually sold at lower than RPP.
Sellers sell Ori, SG and AP sets. Prices vary.

3) Import from Singapore
Involves friend/cousin/acquaintance/oneself to purchase one in the city state and bring it over to Malaysia. Usually very attractively priced.

4) Shops in shopping malls
[input needed]

For the T-Mobile G2:

1) LYN Sellers @ Garage Sales
Usually cheaper than DZ. Either US Set or AP (more common). Prices vary.

2) Shops in shopping malls.
Known to offer cut-throat prices, but that was before the G2 and DZ became (more) common.

3) Buy from US.
Currently only with contract. Best method if you live in the US.

RRP for HTC Desire Z is RM2299.

Safe to say AP DZ prices are hovering around RM1.2K at the moment. (only applies to LYN sellers).

Grab the phone quick if you want because its rarity will increase due to the low market demand of the phone, causing distributors taking in less DZ stocks.

Cases and Screen Protectors

- Non-exhaustive list:
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1438160&hl=
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1707245&hl=
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1575290&hl=

- Generally, due to the low demand of the Desire Z locally, SPs and cases for the DZ are hard to come by in shops:

1) The Mines Serdang [info courtesy of qiilans87]
- HTC Official store
- Same floor with TGV
- ~ Rm35, cheaper if know the tricks brows.gif

Hello ts, regarding the above statement, from my experience, you cant buy it without the contract, or at RRP price. when i bought mine, the maxis person at sunway told me that we cant.

i dont know for sure about other maxis center, but i think it is the same for all.
but we still need to verify this first.

the speaker is quite loud, when play angry birds or listening to mp3 via speaker at max volume, there is distortion of the sound. wish the speaker was better quality

aiya, just got the android leather pouch, then my DZ instantly become seasoned at the front bottom edge just after several in and out of the pouch. how unfortunate, it's only been with me 2 weeks now.

should have gotten the neoprene pouch....

huhu, just the grey coating over the rubber that wear out. the rubber itself is still ok(if it is rubber, felt like rubber). but now it looks like I have been using it for a long time.

tried to take picture of it, but because of the 1.3MP camera on my laptop, the wear could not be noticed. huhuh

well I guess the inner part of the pouch is not soft enough for dz, plus it is a little tight, if not maybe the coating would not wear out.
