Hi guys.

Based from my readings, it seems that seismic is the main geophysics method for offshore exploration. I'm curious, what are the position of electrical-related method in exploration by O&G companies. Is it widely used for exploration or just for electrical well logging only? Reason I ask this is, although I'm from geophysics background, my field of expertise is actually in electrical related such as rock resistivity, SP, and the like.
Not that i mind about learning and mastering other fields.. Just curious though..

both are used extensively.

seismic you get the macro view, electrical measurements you get the close-up view. the electrical measurements can also tell you water saturation, gas/oil, etc.

Seismic can be different by tens-hundreds of feet.

Geophysics are branched into 3 major areas

1. Seismic Acquisition
2. Seismic Processing
3. Seismic Interpretation (which can be further subdivided into several areas)

Your areas of expertise have some relevance in a couple of the areas (seismic processing and interpretation (the quantitative interpretation side))

Rock Physics is an important field of expertise that you may want to look at as most technology are now branching towards that area. Once you have a good understanding of Rock Physics, it can be applied during the seismic processing for AVO and other seismic attributes processing and analysis.

Seismic Acquisition will come into your picture when you require them to acquire the seismic in a certain way ..i.e if you believe that you would like to see some AVO effect, then you should plan the acquisition to enable you to get AVO etc etc ....

I'm not an expert in this area but I worked long enough with Geophysicists to know what they do for a living.

AVO?? that's Amplitude Variation with offset right?

Basically what I'm studying is the physics properties of rock and relate them with porosity, permeability, density, and etc2. Is my branch of study considered rock physics, or petrophysics? I'm always confused about the difference between these two terms..

Rock Physics and petrophysics are very closely related. It sounds like you're more into the petrophysics aspect of it, unless there is some seismic signal relation with the data you mentioned (i.e. permeability, porosity, density etc etc). Either way, you're in good position already as these knowledge will be useful in both petrophysics or geophysics.

hey guys.i'm mechanical background.but working in a small o&g consultant as a structural engineer.i don't know,so far seems okay for me.mainly doing structural analysis using software.thinking of jumping into a subsea/piping company.been 6 months in the current company.honestly i don't hv much passion in doing structural work.should i take the leap?not that i have applied anywhere yet though :|

Finally after a long wait I got a call from Halliburton to go for a test soon. Anybody working in Halliburton can give me some pointers?
