How to differentiate AP and NIKON MALAYSIA warranty set.

All Nikon Malaysia set comes with warranty card like this
user posted image

The wording NIKON MALAYSIA SDN. BHD on the warranty card is the best way to identify whether it's a genuine local set. smile.gif

Buying second hand items guidance for noob tongue.gif

QUOTE(ezrasang @ Dec 1 2010, 10:06 AM)
Nobody answer? Nevermind, I will use my experiences and tell you. So if anyone would like to add further details or do some corrections, please do so  laugh.gif

Firstly, check the outlook for both Body and Lens, if you're happy with it, then proceed to the next stepsssss.  cool2.gif

For the Body:
1. check the Shutter Count, the lower the SC, the better it is, just like a car's milage. Google has a clearer explanation.
2. if the Body has motor and top LCD, make sure they both work well, it's sux if the motor doesn't work, it's sux if the top LCD can't light up.
3. test the Body with various memory cards, you don't want to have error while shooting, don't you? (sometimes it's the memory card that give trouble)
4. test Continuous shoot, will the shutter jam?  rclxub.gif
5. basically you'll have to test everything, every single functions and settings of the body, like ISO, pop-up flash, the condition of hot shoe, the buttons etc etc

As for the lens:
1. it's important that the rubber is still firm.
2. make sure it works on more than ONE Bodies.
3. play with aperture, the zoom if it has, play with it like a toy.
4. if the lens got dust and fungus inside, you can send it for cleaning.
5. if the contact points are dirty, gently use eraser to clean it.
6. if the lens is AF-S, make sure the motor inside is silent while auto focusing, no loud squeaky sound.

what else?  hmm.gif  hmm.gif

Remember, these are based on my personal experiences, correct me if I'm wrong  notworthy.gif

Ken Rockwell facts !

Ken Rockwell is the Chuck Norris of photography

Ken Rockwell's camera has similar settings to ours, except his are: P[erfect] Av[Awesome Priority Tv[Totally Awesome Priority] M[ajestic]

Ken Rockwell doesn't color correct. He adjusts your world to match his.

Sure, Ken Rockwell deletes a bad photo or two. Other people call these Pulitzers.

Ken Rockwell doesn't adjust his DOF, he changes space-time.

Circle of confusion? You might be confused. Ken Rockwell never is.

Ken Rockwell doesn't wait for the light when he shoots a landscape - the light waits for him.

Ken Rockwell never flips his camera in portrait position, he flips the earth

Ken Rockwell ordered an L-lens from Nikon, and got one.

Ken Rockwell is the only person to have photographed Jesus; unfortunately he ran out of film and had to use a piece of cloth instead.

When Ken Rockwell brackets a shot, the three versions of the photo win first place in three different categories

Before Nikon or Canon releases a camera they go to Ken and they ask him to test them, the best cameras get a Nikon sticker and the less good get a Canon sticker

Once Ken tested a camera, he said I cant even put Canon on this one, thats how Pentax was born

Rockwellian policy isn't doublethink - Ken doesn't even need to think once

Ken Rockwell doesn't use flash ever since the Nagasaki incident.

Only Ken Rockwell can take pictures of Ken Rockwell; everyone else would just get their film overexposed by the light of his genius

Ken Rockwell wanted something to distract the lesser photographers, and lo, there were ducks.

Ken Rockwell is the only one who can take self-portraits of you

Ken Rockwell's nudes were fully clothed at the time of exposure

Ken Rockwell once designed a zoom lens. You know it as the Hubble SpaceTelescope.

When Ken unpacks his CF card, it already has masterpieces on it.

Rockwell portraits are so lifelike, they have to pay taxes

On Ken Rockwell's desktop, the Trash Icon is really a link to National Geographic Magazine

Ken Rockwell spells point-and-shoot "h-a-s-s-e-l-b-l-a-d"

When Ken Rockwell went digital, National Geographic nearly went out of business because he was no longer phyically discarding photos

For every 10 shots that Ken Rockwell takes, 11 are keepers.

Ken Rockwell's digital files consist of 0's, 1's AND 2's.

Ken Rockwell never focus, everything moves into his DoF

Ken Rockwell's shots are so perfect, Adobe redesigned photoshop for him: all it consists of is a close button.

The term tripod was coined after his silhouette

Ken Rockwell never produces awful work, only work too advanced for the viewer

A certain braind of hig-end cameras was named after people noticed the quality was a lot "like a" rockwell

Ken Rockwell isn't the Chuck Norris of photography; Chuck Norris is the Ken Rockwell of martial arts.

Ken Rockwell never starts, he continues

I am asking this because my DSLR comes with a free SD card, but they only give me the Lexar brand 8GB card which I found abit slow when I take pictures at very low ISO of 100 to 200 (and sometimes when at very high aperture like f29).. I need to wait at least 10 to 20 secs before I can take another picture.

Dunno whether is my camera faulty or slow memory card problem.

From the looks of pics posted here and elsewhere so far, the interior lighting at klims looks screwed up... Tungsten mixed with fluorescent. Ugh... Reminds me of a cheapo restaurant wedding dinner shoot. Worst kinda lighting imaginable.

I think I'll give it a pass like that. Will take too much effort with lighting just to make anything look even remotely good.

There is nothing wrong. Its called long exposure noise reduction. Also known as dark frame subtraction. What the camera does is take a second exposure with the shutter shut, and use that frame to reduce noise on your long exposure shot. It slows down your shot to shot time by twice the shutter speed you use.

The lighting is totally different from one area to another. Some areas got nice models, but lighting overpowered everything, wanna use my prime wide opened also felt very hesitant to do that, and somemore bounce also very hard.. as many people walking around, chances of people casting shadow is there...

Overall... still not satisfying enough to me....

If you needed to ask, then yes it will be hard. Use bounced flash off the walls or ceiling if you're indoors, or off camera flash, with a softbox if outdoors. If you're on holiday, just forget it and take some snapshots.

Or just hope the ambient lighting is good enough and shoot without flash. 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 will be more than enough.

From what i can remember, the Proton exhibition area has the brightest lighting with a few spot light. Also the floor which has Peugeot, Naza, Kia etc also have good-ish lighting. Others quite bad though sweat.gif

Guys, I'll be attending the KLIMS tomorrow. Any glass recommendations from my sig below ?

Also, I do not have much knowledge regarding the use of speedlight especially in events. Can anyone teach me how to properly use my humble SB-600 ? And do I need to manually set the white balance as the event have mixed lighting condition or the preset mode will suffice ?

Still learning here,Thank you :)

I feel like swapping lenses with my friend for a week. Coz I already can use 50mm on my 17-50, so I'm gonna swap my 50mm 1.4 for 85mm 1.8 for KLIMS. Is it a good idea? hmm.gif

You can, the lighting is more than enough. If shoot cars only is easy, if shoot models then a bit tricky with the spot light.

So far I think only a few booths have performance, Toyota got dancers.

Gah, 85mm on FX is such a sweet range. Sad I don't have a good 50mm with me >(

No point to go for D3000, the D3100 is far superior in terms of sensor technology.

*
yes, i m on a holiday.. is it 35 f/1.8 will help alot when shoot in low light compare to kitlens 18-105?coz lens change is not possible due to extreme temperature+wind...average outdoor will be -20C in coming 2 weeks time, i can either choose one of them...

Exif. Its bad range. This one I standing kinda far! LOL.

I see, thanks a lot. Meaning this is one of the pics u actually manage to capture at 85mm? Haha biggrin.gif

Still choosing between 50 f1.4 & 85 f1.8. For the 50mm, I feel that the my tamron will be able to do the same thing at 50mm, just lack a bit of sharpness hmm.gif

Haha.. I won't mind using my 50mm if I can go further behind, but THEN.... so many people walking pass by, the model and the passers-by are blocking already... haihz

Ended up on my kitlens 80% of the time. Just used my 50mm for some bokeh on the car logos, engines, a few models close up shots.

That's why lens doesn't matter lor. Models matter. tongue.gif

No fate with the models yesterday, some of my shot either shot with awkward and imbalanced skintone color, or misfocusing, no skill sad.gif

Bragging rights to carry those big guns? Lulz. I can't be bothered to carry my 70200 around ~_~ But I think its possible to shoot at f/2.8 without flash. You can go as low as 1/30s with the help of VR.

Wrong, not all 50mm are like that. But then again, can see the box shape of the bokeh on 50mm o_O. This is wide open? If wide open should be round right?

What color profile are you using? Use sRGB for internet. If you use AdobeRGB, color is going to look washed out.

Maybe for my case lar... This is what I have realized in most of my pics. So PP is the only workaround for the washed out color for my lens (I'm using my cheap 50mm f/1.8D anyways)?

Hmm, I seldom use the 50mm f/1.8 wide open, usually about f/2.8. Image too soft to my liking. Just use it in Vivid color mode. Should be ok.

Hmm, I seldom use the 50mm f/1.8 wide open, usually about f/2.8. Image too soft to my liking. Just use it in Vivid color mode. Should be ok.

Alrighty then, will try to play around with that. Thanks. smile.gif

Could be the way you compose your photo, is there light source behind the subject? Might be due to CA when lens is wide open and as you stop down the CA reduces thus more vivid color.

I know for example the 85mm f/1.4D versus the 85mm f/1.4G. The D has more washed out color, maybe one can call it 'natural color' like the Canon. But the new G comes with nanocoat and has much better CA control. Results? More vivid color.

I kinds like the dreamy hazy look of big aperture lenses shot wide open. Gives very good glowing skin tones and hides the imperfections in the skin.

The only thing I don't like is the polygonal bokeh look of the straight aperture on the older lenses. The 85/1.4, 105, 135 and 70-200 gives very nice and much better IMO rounded soft blur circles.

I know the 85 and 70200 has 9 rounded blades. Definitely round bokeh smile.gif The 50mm 1.8D and 1.4D has 7 blades if not mistaken.

Bragging rights to carry those big guns? Lulz. I can't be bothered to carry my 70200 around ~_~ But I think its possible to shoot at f/2.8 without flash. You can go as low as 1/30s with the help of VR.
*
It is possible. But difficult. Events indoors where the subject moves? 1/30s and VR whatnot is not going to save you...

Haha, the girls at KLIMS don't move around if they know you're shooting them. Unless you are referring to those at the stage which turns.

stopped down to 2.8 for extreme sharpness and more dof so the bokeh is hexagonal shape , it will be rounded in shape when wide open but the dof is too shallow where the other eye and other parts would have been blurred.

geek, the colour is washed out due to the conversion of raw to jpeg not the lens.

Normally if I covert raw using CS5, I will increase back the saturation n contrast at least.

Hmm guys I found some bokeh shots with 50mm 1.8 and some actually can get round bokeh..
like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/ying4893/4215619873/

not actually perfectly round but is better than what I thought. How do you guys think?
*
If wide open still no round bokeh then something is wrong tongue.gif. The 85mm f/1.8 also got polygon shape after step down to 2.8 or so.

Sharpness for Sigma @ F/1.4 is not bad, i show u here, of course cannot compared to the sharpness of vr2 wide open... The sigma stopped down to F/2 is razor sharp already sweat.gif

Wow.... The 1st shot is crop from iso4000?? I think is coz wider 50mm bokeh still lack of the oomphh of tighter zoom

Dammit you guys, you make my tokina looks bad =( lol

btw a question to those you use flash to take their pics, do you guys use any diffuser? and yea use big lens easier to get the girls attention. At first i was using the 24-85mm and they barely notice me in the crowd but once changed to the tokky they immediately spot you (even though the tokky is still smaller then nikon 70200 tongue.gif )

According to nikonrumors, D800 should have higher MP (24MP o_O), SAME iso performance, improved AF, full HD recording etc.

The most recent news I saw was a 16MP and 6fps D800 with same ISO range as the D3s.

Of course with the 1080p movie capability etc.

If already got FX lens then its not that hard to go full frame but if already invest in a bunch of DX lens then its abit sakit la if wanna go full frame sweat.gif

atm only have one FX lens and 2 DX lens (including kit lens) so i guess im still ok unsure.gif

100-100k+ range lo. (I can't remember the peak is how much haha).

But that's the rumor I last see la. The d4 is similar, but 9fps.

I don think Nikon will take such a large leap for MP wise. I think they will stay at 16 like the D7000 range, but larger sensor wit much better iso performance.

The poison level too high already so i think wont have effect on me since i know i cant afford it anytime soon laugh.gif

I've played around my friend D3 quite alot and i still cant master to take single pic on high burst settings. Always end up with 3-4 shots with one shutter click doh.gif tongue.gif

Ya me too, apparently I only played the D3 in BTS Nikon Centre, its shutter button is a bit "loose" and soft, one click it'll burst like there's no tomorrow...
But very comfortable clicks. I like the black shutter button than the silver one >.<

The squishy type of button. I like that a lot. D90 bg uses that type too.

Indeed would be awesome but video recording is alot harder then taking photos, plus the editing process is the most mafan part. That's one of the main reason I dislike video recording tongue.gif

I always set on high speed burst mode, but i can control without problem.. I want single shot then sure will get single shot, want machine gun mode then just whack the shutter button all the way icon_idea.gif

Well, if it's just a technical demonstration on the bokehlicious image output, maybe.

But I do agree. On video, it's a whole new world out there where there are other factors and variables that need to be taken care of, unlike photos.

D90 is good for beginners but D7000 just released recently.
Why don't you check out the D7000? smile.gif
It totally dominates every part of the D90 nod.gif

2 choice,

1. Increase shutter speed

2. Use a support (tripod, monopod, lean against a wall etc)

looks like its time for me to invest on a monopod then ...

tried increasing the shutter speed but the lighting at KLIMS was very bad and i dare not go above ISO 640 ...

from your pic i didn't see much camera shake, more like slight misfocus. Shallow depth-of-field, maybe?

But your pic still look sharp at f/1.8. I've screwed up a few pics with the same aperture settings.

diffused/bounced flash + reasonably higher shutter! 1/100 would suffice... ISO at least 800.
If 1.4 like celciuz then no need flash, pump ISO also enough brows.gif

No OOF so far, all very sharp and good but there's slight problem using D90.. I upgraded to D700 then no focusing issues, be it at the center AF point or the outer AF point icon_idea.gif

trustable or not? might it be fake since it's without retail box? I'm looking forward to getting a SDHC, either Class 6 or Class 10.
