Autofocus Problem on Entry Level Body.

Many have ask about the problem of AF(AutoFocus) on entry level body, the problem here is whether the camera body has build-in AF motor or not. And unfortunately, for Nikon's entry level body, they don't come with build-in AF motor, hence in order to autofocus, the camera have to rely on the lens. While the lens must have its build-in AF motor, since the absent of the body AF motor. So, in Nikon's line-up, we have the "AF-S" and "AF-I" lens which has build-in SWM motor for the lens. Therefore, user of the entry level body, will have to look for lenses which has build-in AF motor in order for the autofocus function, else, the user will have to end up doing manual focusing.

While for the "AF" or "AF-D" lens from Nikon, it still can be mount on the camera, but since there is no AF motor in both the camera body as well as the lens, then the user have to work on for manual focus ONLY. On the other hand, the medium to high end of Nikon camera body will come with build-in AF motor, hence it allow the user to achieve autofocus through the camera's motor rotating the lens' element.
Below is for illustration,

Body without build-in AF motor.

LOL, it different from the weather.
I just came back from Beijing 2 days ago.

Winter starts early this year.
A few days before I left the city and it's officially winter already.

Bring good gloves, or else your hands will be very very stiff, can't press shutter button.

Not really on the condensation, coz humidity there is low.
Based on my experience, when going from cold places to a warm place i.e shopping mall or restaurants with heater, it doesn't condense so badly like in Malaysia.
Maybe humidity is lower there.

Use only on night time for portrait shooting.
Flash level 3-5 as I'm using the bounce card.

I'm also very shocked by the time it lasted.

if u plan to use old cheap lens , like 50mm f1.8d , f1.4d , or else just get the 55300 .

For 85mm f/1.4G and SB700, no pricing showed yet. I asked the fella, no one is sure about it also. Well for D7000, they say the RRP price should be around RM5k.

Added on October 29, 2010, 10:20 pmBtw, SB700 seems much more user friendly compared to SB900 laugh.gif

i d say go for d90 + 18-105 if , you got the intention to get prime lens after this . since 1.4d or 1.8d is cheap compared to the 50mm f1.4G AFS

Yeah, my hand shake a lot......plus zoomed in handshake even more obvious! Yup, u are correct....don't have external flash and pop-up flash kinda useless coz of the range so didn't use it at all......thanks for the guidance! biggrin.gif

Got VR ah, but most probably blur coz my hand shake too much til even VR can't compensate for it! I think also coz of the slow shutter speed (1/60-1/80) even at iso 1000 and they're moving around.....need more practice at these kind of events smile.gif

1 or 2 dead pixel is nothing. Seriously. It's normal.
1 or 2 pixels over 12 million pixels? You think people can spot the differences with naked eyes ah laugh.gif

I din even bother to check how many dead pixels I have on my D90 and D300 sweat.gif

mine's a vivitar 70-210. damn full of fungus on every layer of optics. compensates the light and made the photos appears to be softer. =.='''

urm, but could the fungus be transmitted to other lenses as well (as in terms of body sharing?). I kept it separated from other lenses, but sometimes I do use it to.

Maybe u should use smaller aperture for sharpness ? Anyway i try to zoom the picture and thats not really noisy for me btw.

Wan less noise then use ISO100 and longer shutter speed since you already have tripod and time.

Actually the smallest ISO for D5000 is 200 which same as D90.
The 3" shutter speed not long enough? Then is should buy a wired remote release to have try on BULB release mode.
um.... i can see abit blur especially on the sky portion.

Btw, wat is "pixel peeper"?

you definitely need remote to control the camera for long shutter speed. or u can set timer release so that you eliminate any vibrations. but easier with remote lah. and try to use f/8-11 or 16 with longer shutter speed.
pixel peeper means really sensitive to every pixel detail.

Such a pretty lens you have there, how is the newer N VRII lens compared to this VRI version? Have you tried out both? How nice if Nikon produce higher end lens with grey colour (not white), haha

u can set the shutter speed yourself, if more than 30s, then use bulb mode, press the remote once, and then 2nd time to release.

Newer N VRII tend to have breathing issue and very end of zoom. That's why I took the white VR1 instead of the new VRII.
It's actually grey, not white. And Nikon did produce grey for higher end lens like 300mm and etc.

Indeed this zoom lens is very nice for portrait too, forging out money for 85mmG, for me I think better get 70-200 which can be used for motorsport event oso

Quite limited. Penang only got 3-4 person using.
85mm f/1.4 better in term of portrait as bokeh nicer, lighter.
But of course it comes to flexibility as zoom ma tongue.gif
And take into account that 70200 min focusing is 1.5metre wink.gif

85mm is 85cm only. Owned 2 unit and knows it quite well. Both sold off in the end cause cant really use it when table dining.

85mm not that close lo. Quite far away especially when you're having a dinner, this lens probably can't use at all as you need to stand up and go a few steps behind.

If you're keen on portraiture, get 85mm f/1.4D version or 135 f/2DC. That's work perfectly for portraiture.
Or, 70200 also not bad. Bokeh damn smooth.

Photo credit to the owner itself. I don't have any photos of 70200 portraiture yet as I got no time to try it out sad.gif

70200 VR2 has breathing issue is also because the zoom contracts at closest focus distance. But because of that, you get much lesser vignetting even at longest zoom and widest aperture compare to the VR1 rclxms.gif

But how often people will use longest zoom on closest distance sweat.gif

Ok la, i understand. I also use max zoom on nearest subject sometimes to bring the background looks larger and more bokeh sweat.gif

But then, I still will go for VR2 lo. Allow me to take pictures using slower shutter speed and sharper image from edge to edge compare to the older predecessor tongue.gif

True. If on FF, get VRII else VR1 is just fine. I got mine at reasonable price too. Few months old with unfilled warranty card, which I can work out for warranty.

Any link for the bolded part?

Do you manually adjust the speedlite or just leave it with TTL?

I use both. But Nissin Di622 TTL is not so accurate, so I will be using manual most of the time.

QUOTE
Modeling Light

Some new flashes have modeling light. Modeling light is used for checking scene illumination and shadow. When it is activated, the flash emits a reduced flash burst repeatedly for a short period of time. In this way, a photographer will be able to check scene illumination and shadow. The image below shows the modeling illuminator button of a Nikon SB-80DX flash.

It means that the speedlite will keep flash for a period of time?

It's called slave flash. Activated by the built-in flash.
I'm not sure about about the CLS. Maybe cannot because don't have the **forgot name** mode.

So slave flash can work for whatever Camera that has built in flash? Must it be activated by another flash? Or can be remotely activated?

TTL to be exact. For this flash I activate it using TTL flash. If you observe the monitor there's a flash there. That's my TTL. biggrin.gif

entry lvl cant do CLS, but doesnt mean cant do wireless flash
as wireless flash have few types: radio trigger, optical trigger, radio+optical trigger
for optical trigger, as long as there's a flash on d camera(even handphn), it can do wireless flash

Nissin Di622 got slave mode, trigger wirelessly using optical trigger, any brand any camera with flash can trigger it
but no TTL, must set power manually

but latest firmware do support TTL iinm
model light is jz multiple flash compressed together so fast to human eyes it look like continuous light
its jz to let u test d illumination effect of flash b4 d real shoot
it cant b used for shooting, jz test
Di622 MarkII shud have latest firmware
entry lvl cant do CLS, but doesnt mean cant do wireless flash
as wireless flash have few types: radio trigger, optical trigger, radio+optical trigger
for optical trigger, as long as there's a flash on d camera(even handphn), it can do wireless flash
commander mode
*
yes yes yes commander mode. doh.gif forgot liao

radio trigger means d camera or d trigger sends out radio waves to release flash at d moment u press shutter button
Nikon's SU800 work dat way

radio triggered is more expensive lo? Ok.. So optical triggered not good for aquarium photography la?

Because the external flash is mounted on top of the aquarium or fish(subject).. and to use the built in flash to trigger the external flash you will get reflection on the glass of aquarium.. Is this true?

actually d biggest downside of optical trigger is no TTL
u nid radio wave to transmit info to d flash
Nikon bodies with built-in commander mode uses radio+optical trigger
radio wave is used to send info to external flash for TTL, while built-in flash to trigger d external flash

i'll get the 1999 if i dont have to wait to save some more and i need a car badly...

but that will make me thinking, will 2005 version worth the wait...

ahhhh... i guess i dont have to shoot an event indoor at the moment, so maybe just wait... tongue.gif

using built-in flash for that purpose isn't that nice... sweat.gif though what my built in flash did in last shooting amazed me rclxms.gif

A bit correction. It's not picture quality that changes. Picture quality is same like image quality, which is easily achievable using good lens and camera.
It's the picture's value that changes. icon_rolleyes.gif

i see, when i say 'picture quality' i actually mean the way my picture look like before and after i use the flash.

built-in flash - so dull, nothing special

with sb-600 - wow!

Both D3100 and D5000 does not come with a built in motor. Meaning you cannot auto focus with older AF-D lens. Few examples is the common cheap yet good 50mm f/1.8D. Others like 35mm f/2D, 50mm f/1.4D, 85mm f/1.4D etc. Not to mention you can't AF with the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

Then again, new lens now comes with AF-S so those will AF with D3100/D5000.

Beginner I highly recommend D3100 although I still don't own a DSLR LOL... Becase as a teen I o9 whole day read damn many camera reviews lol...

I just read that D3100 does not have AEB mode. How to take HDR photos without AEB? Can I adjust the exposure manually after each shot to get 3 differently exposed photos then edit them to become HDR? Is there any other way with the D3100?

^Can la, just take a few shots at different exposures and merge them....can manually adjust the exp but the risk is that you'll move the camera when u manually change the exp so the HDRed pic will need to auto align it back....

Or, u can take RAW pics and use PP to make different exposure pics and merge them back

because the features are friendlier than 550d...

D3100 better than D5000 for the new tech. Even the staff at Nikon Centre BTS told a person testing the cam, buy D3100 better.

D5000 according to NikonRumors is starting be to discontinued. So you might wait for the replacement.. If u have the patient ..... and hope the price wont balloon like D7k.

Not using adobe lightroom

But afaik(from my personal experience anyway) once you install a software to your computer, there is no need for the cd.

Bokeh with a UWA f/4? Heck even the 14-24 f/2.8 don't give you much bokeh at f/2.8. That lens is for wide angle.. not for bokeh :S. You want wide + bokeh you have to go for the 24mm f/1.4G.

My lens that gives the nicest bokeh now is the 70200, but once the 85mm arrive the 70200 cannot compete in the bokeh department jor haha!

Hi,

My first DSLR. Just got myself a Nikon D3100 from hfwong for my US trip in December. Will be playing around with the camera for the next few weeks.

Question: What at the additional that is a must to bring along this trip for this camera. I have not got any accessories yet.

i used my pop-up flash for these occassion:-

1. it's too dark and not necessary to preserve the original lighting/color
2. filling up shadows
3. freezing movements

Interesting, it looks like a 'Distortion control data' instead of a firmware? Wonder when is this update date... So far ever since I bought my D90 I've not updated the firmware.

Wat u meant by muddy? Sry bad language. ISO 200 looks much worse than D5000 ler (looks like D5k's iso 1200), the guy there say mayb settings prob, I doubt wat settings can affect noise performance other than iso. Since it performs well at high iso, it should b razor sharp at iso200 rite, Haiiz.... need to go try again when it really hit the shelves of Nikon BTS.

I doubt it will be fixed. It's firmware problems. Those at flickr, my guess is they're using noise reduction. My guess tho.

Frankly, I used the 1Dmark4 + 85mm f/1.2L II to focus in low light, cannot lock on. But D3 + 70200 f/2.8 locks easily. LOL.

Okay I know not direct comparison in terms of lens but that's the ones hooked on.

I only on D-lighting when shooting landscape in daytime when theres big contrast between sky n land, d only usefulness of it imo

Hmm... Wat is great bout 1D4's af system compared to D3s or D3x?
*
Speaking of those AF system, I wonder how D300's AF system compared to 7D's.
51 focus points with 15 cross type or 19 focus point with all cross type, which one more superior. hmm.gif

I prefer the 51 AF point system. More versatile. Nikon's 51 AF system is reliable, rarely does misfocus.

Not much comments about D700 versus D3 cause seldom use a D700. But, 1dmk4 vs D3 this I can comment biggrin.gif. Under normal condition, the 1dmk4 focuses faster than D3 (both mounting the 70200 version 2, which means VRII and ISII). But then again, the D3 focuses so fast that the extra speed from 1dmk4 doesn't seem to matter anymore.

Under low light condition is where the D3 shines, the 1dmk4 is pretty slow in low light condition. Don't even wanna talk about the 5dmk2 which is even slower and a lot of misfires lol as compared to D3 which is spot on!

D700 AF very similar to D3's AF.

Even if you compare 5dmk2 to D700, the D700 AF owns 5dmk2 under low light anytime. Even the D300 will be faster and more accurate under low light compared to the 5dmk2. The only AF system that is probably reasonable is the 1dmk4 and 7D.

The 5dmk2 and 1dmk3 and older all have AF issue under low light.

It is the best affordable FF cam. You get a lot of megapixels for that price. Pros and cons. If you're not rushing for time you can slowly focus anyways haha!

Just in case any of you interested... in my experiences, 7D off-center point focus is no where near D300 & D700 also...

And wedding portraiture shots. smile.gif
Went a few bridal shops, found that most of the camera they use are 5D2.

My cousin just got married not long ago. The bridal shop uses 5D2 totally. We went early in the morning for preparation and there are 7 5D2 lining up on the 2nd floor studio table with their battery charging to ready for the day lust.gif

Common because they need the megapixels for big prints. But then again, it is usually the bridals that are using the 5dmk2 a lot. If you look around there's a lot of D3 users.. freelance especially and pros included la... Louis Pang? tongue.gif

Tested the 5dmark II yesterday, AF speed seems like same with D90 only sweat.gif ....other than that, it's perfect.. superb low light performance, not very heavy body(doesn't feel solid as a result of that, even D300s feels better)...with a fast prime lens can practically use that cam without flash

Anybody here know bout the difference btw the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC and non-VC?? I heard and the non-VC version is sharper? Any comments and experience? Initially think of getting the VC, but looking at the review, the non-VC seems more promising.

Need to get a standard zoom now, or any other good lens other then Tammy? I know the sigma, but it's a bit too pricey for me, rather save to get nikkor.

What would be a decent flash in terms of price and performance to go with d3100 for beginners?

No..... SB600 dont work as wireless unless u buy a 3rd party trigger which is around 120-150. Nissini di622 can only be trigger using ur body's flash, means the optical sensor sense ur body flash, and trigger the di622!! Hope this helps...

Macro photography is close-up photography .. The classical definition is that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e., film or a digital sensor) is close to the same size as the subject - from Wikipedia...

18-200 is combination of zoom lens and telephoto lens, its depend on your needs. If you want all-in-one, then go for this lens. If you want better zoom lens, then go for 17-50 f/2.8.

18-270 is much better since got vibration compensation but 18-200 don't have. The macro in both 18-200/270 can also shot wide angle landscape, portrait, object...etc

For me, both this lens is just the extended version of kit lens and smaller aperture.

Nissin 622 trigger via available flash. Which mean even your pop up flash can trigger that.

As well as functions. Although Di622 is very user friendly but it lacks of functions like manual zoom in SB-600
