QUOTE(arafat @ Jan 5 2008, 02:58 PM) Have you tried to boot with noapic parameter?Hmm. Disabled in the BIOS... that's strange. Could it be some other field is controlling that option? Like PnP O/S or something else. Anyway, I have a question for Ubuntu. Gee, can 64 bit Ubuntu 7.10 support > 4 GB ram? I dumped in 8 GB ram and and after installing Ubuntu 7.10 64 bit, it shows only 3.3 GB. Err, there's no hugemem kernel for Ubuntu/Deb based distro, I believe. (I've only used rpm based distro so far. *blush*) Furthermore, 64 bit does not require hugemem to support > 4 GB ram. Grrr. BIOS did manage to detect 8 GB of memory, but Ubuntu 64 bit doesn't. |

kons, not sure about the 8GBs support. But I had no problem detecting my 4GBs.
But thats 4GB. Hm. Perhaps you need a kernel with hugemem support. |

Sorry, I'm using pure Debian. But you can try search apt for kernel image that support bigmem.
Try: $ apt-cache search linux-image |grep bigmem linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.18 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-image-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.18 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.18 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-image-2.6.18-4-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.18 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-headers-2.6.23-1-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.23 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-image-2.6-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-image-2.6.23-1-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.23 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 linux-image-686-bigmem - Linux image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 If you can't find any bigmem kernel image support from apt, then you need to compile your own kernel. This is the place you should configure: This post has been edited by oshiri: Jan 7 2008, 11:16 AM Attached thumbnail(s) |

But I need it to run in 64 bit mode, is there a bigmem kernel for x86_64? Hmm, I think GG is using 2.6.22 by default. Haven't done the latest update yet, the main line and backup has gone down and we are all sharing the 2nd backup 56kbit modem connection. The worst case to determine whether it is a Mobo problem or Ubuntu problem, I'll reformat the PC and install with the Win2003 Enterprise and see. |

I am a noob in Ubuntu... Can you guide me how to disable GUI in Ubuntu? Searched Google but not quite sure whether it is the one to be used.... The version is Ubuntu 6.06 ...
Added on January 13, 2008, 12:39 pmAnd if in the Synaptic Package Manager does not have the Firestarter firewall, where can I download it in zipped/compresses folder? I had to use IE for the Internet as whenever I used Ubuntu, somehow the connection is too slow.. Don't know whether it is the connection problem or my own silly mistake?
