my guess is you are having bad blocks on ntfs partition.
You can use badblocks to check that particular partition.
Or you can try use ntfsfix to try fix it.
**Backup first**

QUOTE(horphi @ Oct 6 2007, 07:57 PM) Well, i don't think so. The drive is quite new. It's only a few months old. Besides, I have Vista and XP installed on it and so far I do not run into any problems while running the two OSes.QUOTE(oshiri @ Oct 6 2007, 09:36 PM) my guess is you are having bad blocks on ntfs partition. I have read about badblocks and ntfsfix. Since there's a risk in losing data when performing the check, I know it is better for me to back up. But, for now, I do not have the resources to backup. Thus, I will keep you guys updated when I get myself a new hard drive to store the backups and continue on with the checks. Thanks for your help anyway. You can use badblocks to check that particular partition. Or you can try use ntfsfix to try fix it. **Backup first** |

Tention :
Grub failed to install would mean that you boot sector is blocked, probably by your BIOS. Check in your BIOS settings. Sometimes there is a "Virus protection" option that does this. mystical zero : Since your HD works in Windows, then maybe its because of NTFS-3G. Did you mess with the fstabs file? |

BIOS should be on the motherboard.MBR should be on the harddisk. Is the Ubuntu on existing hdd? Or you're planning to install Ubuntu into the new hdd? |

Vmware-Ubuntu Internet Sharing Problem.
In Xp, I was using PPPoE dialer to connect Streamyx and LAN with static IP. In Vmware, I choose DHCP and Bridge but seem like Ubuntu couldn't obtain any IP. and what is VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 and VMware Network Adapter VMnet8? do I need any configuration on both protocol? |

By default, VMNet0 is for bridged mode, VMNet1 is for host only, VMNet8 is for NAT. Unless you want to change the IP addresses, there's no need to change any configuration on these virtual adapters. Did you try VMWare on NAT mode? It should work. |

QUOTE(syyang85 @ Dec 26 2007, 10:31 PM) I'm dual booting ubuntu and xp using grub. At the grub boot menu during startup, move the selector to the Windows XP entry. Press e. Then, highlight root (hd1,0) and press e again. You will be presented with something like grub edit>root (hd1,0). Delete 1,0) so that what remains is root (hd. Now, press <Tab> twice so that you could see the available HDD. To this point, you wouldn't know which HDD identifier belongs to Windows XP. But, you could determine it further by roughly identifying the number of partitions your Windows HDD. For now, simply type in the one of the HDD identifier listed till the comma. After that, press <Tab> twice again. You will be presented with the partition identifiers for the specified HDD above. If there are more partition identifiers listed than the number of partititons you would expect for your Windows HDD, it must be the wrong HDD. Therefore, delete the current HDD identifier and try with another number. If it's the correct HDD, what you need to do is type in the identifier for the partition and close it with a closing bracket. Once you're done, press <Enter>. Remember the identifier and press b to boot with the modified identifier. Well, if you can boot into XP, this must be the right identifier. Hence, boot into Ubuntu and modify the menu.lst to change root (hd1,0) to the new identifier that you've modified to earlier. However, if it won't boot, you would need to the repeat the above steps and do a little bit of trial and error on the identifier.both os are in separate hard disks. Anyone here uses SAMBA for file sharing among housemates/units/friends?
I have uBuntu installed, and i reckon i've also installed Samba (following the steps according to what's been discussed this past 30 pages). Problem lies in, setting everything up using the terminal, and accessing the home folder of the designed server from other users. We've got a wireless router, and the server with uBuntu (samba) is a P3. The unit im living in has 7 other notebook, 2 macs. Anyone with experience of installation able to guide me on how to "share" the files, doesn't seemed to work at the moment |

Or, you can disable ioapic in your BIOS if the BIOS supports it. If it hangs as well, we would need to look deeper. |

I've tried certain installation but it still ain't working perfectly.I am sure that there are some of you that has tried Samba with a group of friends that is connected via Router, it'll be of great assistance in this matter |
