The D90 is a digital single-lens reflex camera model announced by Nikon on August 27, 2008. It is a "prosumer" model (cross between professional and consumer) meant as a replacement for the Nikon D80. It is also available with the newly announced Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens.
Some of the improvements the D90 offers over the D80 include 12.3 megapixel resolution and live view capability. The D90 is also notable for being the first DSLR to offer video recording, with the ability to record HD 720p videos, with mono sound, at 24 frames per second (for up to 5 minutes or 20 minutes for smaller videos).

How to know whether your camera is brand new? Best to do this test before you make payment.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. For brand new camera, the very first time you switch on your camera, it should ask you to set the language, region, date and time.
2. Even if you reset the camera, the language, region, date and time will remain un-reset. So best way to guess it is brand new camera, is by seeing those screens.

1. Put your Lens Cap on.
2. Set to Manual focus.
3. Disable AutoISO. Manually set ISO to 3200.
4. Take a photo.
5. View the image from your camera. Zoom in a little.
6. Try to spot blue/red/green dots. If it is there. Congratulations! You have got Dead/Hot Pixel.
What to do if you have Dead/Hot Pixel on your sensor?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Option 1:- 1. Send to Nikon Service Centre. They will remap it for you. This process might take up to 10 days.
2. Remapping doesn't guarantee to solve the problem permanently. The Dead/Hot Pixel might appear again in the future.
Option 2:- 1. Live with it. It is only a few pixel out of the millions of pixel.
2. Take photos in NEF (Nikon RAW).
3. Use Adobe LightRoom / Nikon Capture NX to process the photo from NEF (Nikon RAW) into JPEG. Both the software will auto remove the Dead/Hot Pixel when export NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG. No need to do any settings. Basically, just import NEF (Nikon RAW) -> export to JPEG. Dead/Hot pixel will be removed automatically in the JPEG.
4. Wait until your warranty is about to be over. Send it for remapping and cleaning.

6. View the image from your camera. Zoom in a little.
7. Try to spot dots. If it is there. Congratulations! You have got Dust.
How to remove Dust from your sensor?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Option 1:- 1. Live with it, if the Dust is not obvious in all the images.
2. You can ignore it or use post processing to remove the dots manually.
Option 2:- 1. The Dust gets too many, and you are tired of post processing, so...
2. Send to Nikon Service Centre. They will clean it for you.
Option 3:- 1. You get tired of going to Nikon Service Centre all the time, so...
2. Clean it yourself. This can be risky if you do not have the right tools and know what you are doing.
3. Below are some good info on how you can remove Dust from your sensor:-
5. Find the entry 'Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera'. The value represents the shutter count.
Which SDHC memory card should you go for?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
For 8GB, Nikon D90 can take up to 539 NEF (Nikon RAW) files. For 16GB, Nikon D90 can take up to 1114 NEF (Nikon RAW) files.
If you plan to take in JPEG mode, the number of files will be more than double the amount of NEF (Nikon RAW) files. That is really a lot for normal day2day shooting or short trip.
So what is recommended? My personal opinion is go for 8GB, SDHC (30MB/s edition). Take note of the logo on the SDHC memory card. Don't be confused by 30MB/s Edition and 20MB/s Edition.
Now, let's say you need more capacity / have more money? Should you go for 16GB? A lot of people would advise that you should not put all the eggs in one basket. Same advise can be applied here. It would be advisable to have multiple SDHC memory card rather than 1 big capacity. This is just in case it got corrupted, not all photos are lost and you still have another SDHC memory card with you to use.
It would also be recommended to format your SDHC memory card (from your camera) every time after you have access it from a computer.

SanDisk Extreme 3 SDHC 30MB/s memory cards : SanDisk set a new speed record of 30 megabytes per second for Secure Digital flash memory cards with the introduction of the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition line of SDHC flash memory cards. The new SanDisk flash memory cards, expected to be available worldwide in September in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities, are designed to deliver peak performance when used with the new digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, Nikon D90. The Nikon D90 Digital SLR is the industry’s first DSLR camera to support SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition SDHC cards at increased performance.
Nikon D90 memory card Featuring a 50-percent speed boost from previous 20MB/s cards, the new SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition SDHC card makes it possible to record 39 images in continuous shooting mode at 4.5 frames per second with a file size of 6.0 MB JPEG L Fine per image. The Nikon D90 camera captures high-resolution, 12.3 megapixel still images, and it is Nikon’s first DSLR to offer movie recording capability.
Advantages & Disadvantages of taking photos in NEF (Nikon RAW)?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Advantages:- 1. NEF (Nikon RAW) gives the flexibility and better result for post processing (eg, White Balance, Exposure, etc). If you choose to do post processing on JPEG, the output might not be as good as from NEF (Nikon RAW).
2. If you have Dead/Hot pixels, with Nikon Capture NX / Adobe LightRoom, the conversion from NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG will auto remove the Dead/Hot pixels (without any need of adjustment). Just import NEF (Nikon RAW) and export to JPEG.
Disadvantages:- 1. Need more storage space on your memory card.
2. Need more storage space on your computer hard drive.
3. Need some time to post process from NEF (Nikon RAW) into JPEG.

How to convert NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG easily?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. I've tried a couple of software, and I think the easiest and most user friendly program to do conversion from NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG is Adobe LightRoom (commercial software). LightRoom has option to batch convert NEF (Nikon RAW) to JPEG easily. It also allows batch post processing.
2. Run LightRoom.
3. Import NEF (Nikon RAW).
4. If necessary, make adjustment to the image.
5. Export to JPEG.
6. You can do adjustment to all the NEF (Nikon RAW) before exporting to JPEG at one go.
7. You can delete the NEF (Nikon RAW) files since you have the processed it into JPEG output. You can choose to keep those important NEF (Nikon RAW) files for future post processing.

just got myself a nissin 622 flash gun and it is working ok.
but i want to know if i am able to turn off the d90 built in flash and just use the ir emmiter of the d90 to trigger the flash?
If you set the D90's popup flash to commander mode and its power level to "--" it will fire a tiny burst of light just enough to trigger the Nissin, but not enough to contribute any meaningful light of its own. This is really only problematic with reflective surfaces because that pulse of light will show up, even if it doesn't affect the exposure in a measurable way.
Alternatively, Nikon makes an accessory that fits into the hotshoe and covers the popup, blocking visible light but allowing the IR signal to pass.

tq jumping_jax. i tried the 1st method but silly me pointing the camera at a coke bottle so it showed the initial burst form the pop up. thank you again for clearing this up for me.

i feel tat you should just grab the d90 while you can..spend the time invest in good lens is better for a newer body...d90 is pretty good as it is...unless you wish to have higher mega pixel count, i suggest you just go grab 1..cause its selling like hot cakes now...
i think should wait. d3100 is pretty impressive. if im not mistake, D90 is nikon's best selling model...so replacement should be very2 worth it!

haha..the 70-200 i mean like for the price you pay for its quite ok...its pretty sharp at 70mm f2.8...but when you zoomed pass the 135mm mark, it tends to be a lil soft..but no worries...stop to F3.5 and it should fix the softness..overall i love the built quality...

can someone kindly advise me the pro's/con's of getting a d90 over the newer canon 550d?
i was leaning towards the d90, but from shopkeepers they say the 550d is more worth it. video mode is better, canon lens cheaper and service better. in terms of photography, i hear the d90 is probably slightly better, but by how much? suppose to be better in lowlight conditions? i understand that the d90 is aimed at prosumer ppl while the 550d is more beginner-dslr, what makes this so? would it mean d90 has more configuration or better specs? i currently use a 450d and will sell it, just deciding between d90 and 550d.
@celciuz just now i surf around your flickr, and saw a lot portrait shots. does those model you find are your friend or you invite 1? and if you invite 1 model, it will be how much

Entry-level upgrading to entry-level?
If that's the case isn't it better jump to D90, or if must jump-ship but same level - D3100, or dowan jump-ship but upgrading why not 50D, 60D or better yet full frame?
My post might not have answered the pros and cons question but I'm merely contributing tiny 2 cents of mine =)

Seems like not much user of 85mm Nikon, but I have heard numerous praises for the Tamron lens, only problem is no VR and slow auto focus(I think that's not really a problem for macro, since most of the time u'll be using manual focus anyway)

Should come with a bag, but I think that is decided by the shop themselves.
which means it could be an optional item, n can be "while stock last" thingy? dunno how it likes...but if not really good fit, then don mind din hav it... can still make use of current one...

a couple of weeks ago, i went walking around shops in lowyat and i saw a shop selling D90 kit set for 32xx. i did not ask whether it is local warranty or not.
Heh u should show the bokeh on FX body, wonder how much better it is
A bit lor, cause you can stand closer. According to exif this image is 3.6m from subject, if FX maybe you stand 2.5m then got more bokeh lor. Last weekend I used D3 for some of my shots, once edited will bring in to poison xD.

Not so soon lorrr, college boy still cannot afford mahh Wait probably 1-2 more years to come, because probably will be going to japan for study, so might end up buy there
Guys, I always wonder. Why bokeh is better of FX body? Is it because of the sensor?
You do know that if you're closer to your subject, DOF reduces right?
So yes, comparing FX and DX, let's say 100mm. The DX might be standing at say 2m away, but the FX might be 1.5m to get similar composition. Just a rough estimation.
f/2.8 not fast enough for indoors without VR right?

My friend told me the 85mm f/1.4G is at BTS already. , faster go try out and post some poison. If possible shoot with the older one too xD. See what's the differences like ^^.
The f/1.4D is sharp at f/1.4 too. Only heard this G lens is 'sharper' and is faster (more light transmission at same settings) compared to D. Currently awaiting side by side comparison.

One thing for sure, I feel focusing quite slow. Personally feel tho. I might be wrong.
You do know that if you're closer to your subject, DOF reduces right?
So yes, comparing FX and DX, let's say 100mm. The DX might be standing at say 2m away, but the FX might be 1.5m to get similar composition. Just a rough estimation.
Ohh yea forgot Thanks for the explaination sifu. Haha
Meaning 100mm bokeh on FX equals 70mm bokeh on DX. Right?
the standard is sRGB, since most monitors, printers etc all support sRGB but not all support adobe RGB. so if u shoot using adobeRGB but view it on a monitor that doesnt support adobeRGB, no point also
that being said, adobeRGB is better, but for hobbyists it doesnt really matter i guess

It's either SB650 or SB700. They haven't decided the name, or it's just a guess. Nikon haven't released the official name yet. Like D90's replacement last time, D95 and D7000
Hi guys, i just accidentally broke my D90 battery door. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement as soon as possible? Any shops around PJ/Cheras/Kajang that carries stock?
Any help would be highly appreciated. I am devastated

Heard about SB650 too. Any idea when will it be released or announced?
Hey, I realized my D90 has one permanent stuck or hot pixels. Any reliable sources on how to overcome/remove it?
Send it to Nikon service center to do pixel mapping to shut that pixel lo. No choice. Btw, 1 pixel out of 12 millions, doesn't really matter. Can easily remove with PP anyways.

Yeah, I will ask for service since I work in BTS rofl. And I also think there might have possibilities of having new stuck pixels after service?
haha...celciuz pic always so sharp... if only i can get hold of a lens like that...
@reenz racun!! hehe...but the 85mm f1.4G is a really good lens...seen the pics it produces...out of this world...need to get FF to fully enjoy it
meanwhile...spam!
@jobneed well, i dun really fancy third party lens actually....the only third party manufacturer i would recommend is Tokina...other than that...i wouldnt consider...cause it is pretty prone to focussing issue...just make sure your copy is sharp before buying...bring along a focusing chart

How do you focus at the moment? Area mode? or single point?
At the moment i relied a lot on single point af. Sometimes if lighting condition doesn't permit, i need to rely on manual, which i'm still trying to improve. When there's too shallow depth of field, my manual focus is going to be bad.
but just now i went to cousin house, my cousin's father have got a sigma 28-70mm f2.8 but i dont see this lens on the sigma website too. any review about this 28-70 f2.8 lens?
Need some help here. I got this underexposed problems with my SB600 lately, I'll try my best to explain it below:
My settings: On body: Aperture mode, F2.8 & EV compensation 0 On flash: TTL mode, FEV 0 & AF-ILL
No matter what I change such ISO & aperture, my EV indicator still shows towards negative. This give me underexposed photos everytime I used the flashgun. Never happened before this, please need some advice and help here, thank you.

Tried it once at a shop. I was told it works best / sharpest btwn 70-200mm. Quite a good one. Market price should be around 1.9k - 2k.
I tried friend's 70-300 before he switched to 70-200. What the shop said was true, above 200mm the images are soft. Below 200mm the center part is still alright.
QUOTE(geekster129 @ Sep 12 2010, 10:27 PM)
I was wondering what makes it not sharp for 200mm above? Is it because of the distortion from the lens itself?

could it be that you're shooting at low light that your d90 is unable to use a slower shutter speed since by default its set to use shutter speeds of 1/60 even if a slower shutter speed is required..

Probably need to check flash settings, any EV compensation done?
Try setting your flash to slow mode and see what the outcome is like.

i remembered soft and dreamy style pics were quite popular in the 1980s wedding pics.
It's still quite popular if you refer to bridal house photo. The photo I took actually was sharp enough but the dreamy effect I tried tend to bring out more feel for this photo. Personally feel so tho

shooting at F1.6 is pretty shallow..how you make both the subjects in focus? where do you focus? care to share?

Thanks sidewinderz bro, I'll check my default settings for the shutter speeds. If not mistaken, I set it at 1/60 in the setting menu. Will update you after I have it check Cos its weird how come my Exposure Compensation is always negative whenever I'm using flashgun.
what you said is right, my Flash Shutter speed is 1/60s...once I set it to slower say 1/30s or 1/15s, the FEC didnt showed negative. Can you pls explain why in more details? cos a bit noobs in flash...hehe

there is always a way to make it happen... I guess it is up to the individual to do or not to do, no?
@KTCY I've handled numerous cam, well vid camera.. guess all it counts is experience, no? any picture can be sharp with careful handle. Even at the hassle spots. Though for photography I've been on/off for the past 5 years.. I guess it is harder compare to vid cam..

Yeap yeap. Might be only that particular day my hand was tired. Can't really remember tho. But I will try to bring that lens out and shoot some portrait
How much is the price estimated to be in your opinion?
If its RM4k or above, I might as well just get the D90 as I'm on a budget.
Rumoured that the D90 replacement is above D90 in terms of level but below D300s, so I am guessing the price of a new D90 replacement is going to cost at least RM4k(w/kit lens)
Whoa could get it around rm1600 ah Lucky just now i didn't straight buy it. Because i saw from nikon website quoted RSP 1,888 How much the shop sell for Sb-900?
And btw, does flash comes with grey(import) set and local set just like DSLR body?
One thing I like about D7000... the new dial! looks so pro!
But I already have D90, shoot more, don't care XD
yup.. love the button and dial design... so am i.. enuff with d90 and not to forget, my oldy d40.. wait till hv enuff money then jump to pro level maybe...

I sold my oldy D40 and get D90. Won't be buying anymore, cuz now university life, everyday so busy, assignment... tests... seldom have chance to shoot. Shoot also family/frens photos, not models or photography stuff lol.

Did you guys notice D7000's shutter button? It is black! similar to those D300, D700 and D3. Looks more pro By the way, it is a huge jump from D90 to D7000

Yikes, 100ISO as base? I thought it was 200ISO like the rest of CMOS sensors from Nikon. Only the CCD sensors have 100ISO (D80 for example) AFAIK.
but for canon camera, their ISO is based at 100... =) hehe...i think its a good change...since ISO200 might be a lil too much for bright conditions...and with a max shutter speed of 1/4000 i guess nikon got it right this time...
I think D7000 will be about 4k for body only. Well after it is very similar to a D300s. Everything surpassing D300s except probably the number of AF points and fps perhaps? Not sure if this D7000 will increase fps with batt grip or not.
"...It's looking like a thorough upgrade from the D90, but remember that Canon's direct competitor -- the 60D -- costs a Benjamin less than the D7000's $1,200 body-only asking price (or $1,500 with an 18-105 kit lens)"-Engadget
It's magnesium alloy, unlike polycarbonate of D90. Expect this to be a rather cheap D300 than D90 replacement. Nonetheless, fingers cross for cheaper D90.

I'm only interested with the ISO performance, D3100 has good ISO for DX. Let's see D7000 can retain same thing cause it has higher MP compared to D3100.

Oh yeah, I am also interested at the ISO performance, iso 1600 for D90 is really the max I would go ... Let's hope this D7000 @ ISO3200 is as good as D90 iso1600 at
yea bro...it is the replacement...D90 is not history... yea..i would guess its a new battery since they claim that it can have more shots per charge...but weather sealed? i didnt see it mention anywhere...

well its entirely up to you actually...50D is a good buy with magnesium body and weather sealing..its quite a bargain...but d90 is pretty good as well with HD video recording (which no1 really uses as it does not support external mic input)..but ultimately, whether you go to nikon or canon will depends on how you wanna proceed..whether you prefer the colours produced by canon and nikon and the accessories (lens, flash) that each of the camera manufacturer produces...
for me, i would go for the 50D mainly cause canon has a wider selection of lenses...but what got me to purchase the d90 was mainly the colours it produces.. =)

And today, SB-700 was announced. Haha... will grab it as soon as it available. how much the estimated price anyway?
@loveydovey_ yeah its not a rumour anymore if u look a few pages back u can see its already been announced earlier today its called the D7000, some say its not a replacement for d90 but from the spec wise it definitely is a better option than D90, given that u have the budget
@BaRT since it sit between sb-600 and sb-900 i;d say around 1.3-1.5?

it is a slightly less powerful replacement for the SB-600, somemore recycling time is only approximately 2.5 seconds with NiMH batteries and alkaline batteries and approximately 3.5 seconds with lithium batteries which is same as SB-600 too... so what make it so much expensive?
I doubt D90 price would reduce, this D7000 is more like another range from Nikon instead of replacing D90. It comes with features like weather seal and magnesium alloy which is only available up to now on Nikon's semi pro and pro bodies.

you like nikon's colour? i tried my cousin's 5d mark II.. the colour... umpphh. i use nikon bcoz of the easy interface...
nikon user will tell u nikon is better built, canon user will tell u canon is better built,
in the end u have to hold the camera in your hand and judge by yourself, no point following the masses but the camera u bought feels un-comfortable in your hands

it is very obvious that canon got better build than nikon just to compare a canon 20d series as the semi pro non FF to the nikon semi pro dx series to answer that call, nikon created d7000 to challenge canon 60d with hope to balance back nikon with canon body built

D70000 is similar to D300s, I see the body is larger than the D90, but doesn't seem as big as the D300s.
Only the top and bottom of the D7000 body is Magnesium Alloy, the rest is not.. While the D300s is surrounded by Magnesium Alloy , this is what i read on dpreview.com

dun think D90 will drop tat much..it seem d price now at d limit adi XP btw i heard D90 gonna obsolete end of this year..true?
no camera will get obsolete, jz like lens (i bet if giv u a chance to grab an old F series at 100, u probably will grab 1 n try on the old 1...) tool only become useless when the man behind it "obsoleted" themselves...
True, if the D7000 is priced about RM3.5k, Nikon don't need to drop the price of D90 anyways. D7000 > D90, but price wise also big gap so consumers need to decide.

lol...if the price gap is wide, prefer to get the d7000 simply for the more rugged built...the iso performance dun seem to be as good as i hoped it to be...hmmm...

To me, D7000 / D3100 will be an experiment test from Nikon. Reason : New sensor by themselves. That's the reason they didn't roll out PRO level body eg D700 replacement.
Once they gain feedback, pros & cons from this 2 model, D700 replacement will have solve all the problems by the new sensor.

agreed ! 5 d mark 2 is killing nikon nicely, so many jump ship to canon because of that
