Let's say there's a stall accepting credit card application.  With our info and photocopied IC, what kind of damage can they do if it's a scam?  Can they apply for an actual cc with all of our details except the address, and when the cc arrives at their doorstep, they activate it and start using the card?

What precautions can we take to ensure they are not scammers?  Even if we look at their ID and call up the bank to check, their IDs can be fake too...
*
With the photocopied IC how can the activation pin arrive at their doorstep? If they try and use a fake address I should think the banks will be able to know since MyKad is supposed to be a smartcard (well maybe not a lot smart but I'm sure still a little bit smart notwithstanding Malaysia Boleh!) and the address is tied to it.

As such I think it should be safe to apply at those cc promotions at shopping compleses and supermarkets.

that's why it's recommended to write the bank and CC type over the photocopy IC/CC to ensure agent cannot "re-use" and can only apply for that bank's CC ...the more specific the better.
*
My take is ... fraud can happen even if you have taken all precaution. Just do your best to prevent it.
One way is to monitor the way the agent/staff handles your IC. Never let it out of your sight. Ensure it is crossed specifically to avoid duplication scams. If the staff/agents mishandles it, be brave to cancel and take away your application if necessary. If you suspect a scam, just walk off or better report it to whomever you see fit. (Bank, BNM, police, etc.)

And before you leave ... ensure your IC is back to you and any extra copies of your IC is destroyed.
No need to be too paranoid about it .... if you do then you can't sleep. cry.gif

The agent can apply for the bank's cc using all of your details except the address which is his. When the card arrives, he can use it (if pre-activated) or call the bank to activate his account. Since he has your details, it's easy to answer the verification questions.

What activation PIN? Don't they call the bank to activate the cards? And some cards are pre-activated too. Delivery of cards can be to an address other than the address on the MyKad (eg. office address).

I don't understand your statement in bold. You mean the bank can query a MyKad number and view the details including address?

applied UOB, HSBC, Citi , EON and SCB during matta fairs.

So far EON was the fastest to approve my card, i.e. i received the sms notification on Monday.  SCB was too approved on Monday but I had to call to find it out today.  Others remain processing.

btw hows the SCB benefit like?  am just gona use the free cash and then say bye to it... hehe !

as regards EON matta card, am not going to use just entertain the sales and applied for its benefit is not as great compared to others!

I'm not an expert on credit cards, but personally I won't do what you plan to do, especially for a mere few handred ringgit. It might damage your reputation with the banks. What if you need a loan in the future? What if the banks you said "bye bye" to come up with a great card in the future? Your future applications might be rejected and you'll be posting here wondering why.

Having a good relationship with the banks is importnat if you are an investor.

it will not. the bank will only keep the record for 6 months and after that, u can reapply again. Who is the bank to penalise you if u are a good paying master? for eg, UOB (gold), i hardly used it and cancelled it. Now i got the preferred plat smile.gif

i think of all, i got at least RM300 cash extra to spend smile.gif

You can't withdraw the FD without cancelling your credit card beforehand. I means that you have to cancel your credit card first and they will release your FD in the next few days when your credit card is canceled (note : sometimes it takes 2 weeks or longer just to cancel a credit card).
No. There won't be any certificate issued. Every banks have their own set of regulations and do things differently. I am not exactly sure how this thing works at all other banks but at HSBC, they will ask you to sign on a green form (collateral form) and that's it. You do not have to pay for anything at all. No stamp duty and no processing fee.

thanks miles, apparently i receive a CC without any submitting any documents. I thought it's secure card. I only a few k in the saving account from the bank.

arrgh I got it mixed up with the ATM card where they send you the pin about a week after you received the ATM card.

Anyway if what you peeps say is true would the banks not have plugged up this loophole instead of using agents to very actively promote the cc's at shopping complexes? Would the banks go about so blatantly leaving themselves open for fraud?

Those 200 places are referring to the selected branches of partnering Maybank merchants under the on the spot redemption:

May be it's from the bank that your salary is paid into every month ?

No. It will be charged right away on every new card approved.

+1 for that!

Moreover, please do not pity those CC sales agent just to apply for their credit card. As far as your knowledge, apply 1 credit card must take fully responsible on it. This is not just a simple prepaid card like ur phone sim card!

Many customer fall into their sales agent prey. I met a person have unknown 4 credit cards in same bank but did not know about these almost 1 year after suddenly receive stmt because of GST and his name being blacklisted in BNM.

Simple, make sure you call to their hotline marketing department for staff ID verification. That's to make sure this agent really working with their bank. Please remember to keep a copy of your application for reference. Mostly ppl wont bother to keep a copy of it. It can protect yourself being misused by sales agent!
