The $500 deposit is the lowest initial deposit you can find if I am not mistaken, some banks might require more. I know for DBS/POSB, you just need to bring your EP/Approval-in-Principle letter, passport and $500 to open a savings account. Anyway, DBS/POSB has the most number of ATMs as mentioned, but they also have the longest queue for their ATMs and branches based on my experience. In terms of interest rate, they are pretty much similar with insignificant difference (not like the interest rate is good to begin with).

For the minimum balance requirement, I know DBS do penalize you too if your balance drops below $500.

You guys are discussing about the selling of Tj Pagar KTM by MY to SG.

Since MY lacks of $$$ currently, I would prefer if the PM Najib could sell an island/sand equivalent to the size of SG to SG.

That would be win2 situation, MY gets the money whereas SG gets the land. Better still, sell 2 Johor's river to SG.

Hi fellow Malaysian,

I have some queries, when you choose to work in singapore which is most likely due to the higher currency exchange, but when coming to upgrading yourself with a postgraduate study in countries such as UK, AU, US (since studying over these countries would be more costly)

a. What are the postgrad scholarship option available for Malaysian working in Singapore to study in the above mentioned country? Can you provide a list
b. Is it better for Malaysian working in Singapore to apply Malaysian scholarship to study in thos countries UK/AU/US ? E.g Petroleum/MACEE/Yayasan Khazanah
~ but since we have been working in SG for quite awhile, and yet to contribute to malaysia seems quite tough to secure one
c.Would you sponsor yourself to work a few years in SG followed by applying for a postgrad
d.Or finding a company to sponsor you to work there? Not too realistic though.

Thanks, Bluefox

Malaysia just did that with brunei whereby land which was in dispute between malaysia and brunei (Brunei had the upper hand and would win in an international court), so malaysia or pak lah specifically made a deal with brunei that they would give them certain blocks of offshore area which contained an estimate USD 100 billion dollar worth of oil. I sure hope that piece of land aka limbang was worth 100 billion dollars.

I don't see it as win-win for MY-SG. More like 1-4 win for SG.

MY don't have the brain to make good use of their resources for long term economy progress. The best way they know is either set up Toll or sell away their resources. What can the money do for Malaysia with so many pockets in the gov? All will be gone soon, maybe by another angkasawan project!

The land is probaly the most valuable on Malaysia map. if the MY plan and execute a good startegy, that land can bring in long term economy benefit. But they choose the easy money path, this easy money will eventually make a small group of people rich but nothing much will be improve on national level. My just lost a golden hen that can lay golden eggs.

Since SG independent, SG had progress so much with a "torn" right across its center heartland over 40 years. Now with this torn removed, the west and the east are finally united. SG will reach new high.

Even that land is still under malaysia, but the actual development on the site by the joint company will benefit SG far more greater than MY. Guess which dato will be the future sleeping partner in this company?

So it is more like a 1-4. Big win for SG, small short tern gain for MY.

wat a 'wise' decision made by our PM on the Tjg Pagar Land...

When they give up the Tjg Pagar land, they also give up the land that built for railway. hmmm..

They should study the Tjg Pagar valuation... and build commercial building by MY, and rent to other ppl like SG... and earn from there...

KTM -> from SG to KL -> required 10 hrs + bumpy road + uncomfortable ride -> expensive if compared with Airasia/Jetstar like SGD 30 one way to KL... even they switch to Woodland.. also can't survive la..

Plus, SG dun wan continue the water supply contract by next year, and another one at 2061/2063.. they want to be 'indenpendant'...

hmm.. believe KTM must give some "tips" to person-in-charge gua... plus the "person-in-charge" also won't last long.... "eat" gau gau.. then dissappear like "someone".... pity all the taxpayers...

In this case, SG need MY more than MY need the money.

MY "can" operate the KTM 999 years start from 1918. By law, those land can only to be used for RAILWAY service under KTM.

Then LKW meet Tun Dain on 1990 and they decide MY move the station from Tanjong Pagar to BUKIT TIMAH(sure will make the area less high class thus less value). Then the land between B.Timan and T.Pagar belong to SG. The old station land will be develop by a joint nation company. SG want is to be done right after signing but MY say not till they decide when they like to move the station to Bukit Timah. Thats basically drag the issue for the past 20 years. The point is, SG can't call in the police into Malaysia land to remove the station by themself.

If malaysia remain the same,
1) malaysia still have all the land.
2) nothing much SG can do.

If malaysia have done so,
1) MY still have part of the rail road for future deal.
2) MY have a better income source from the T.Pagar station land.
3) SG gain the rail track land between the two station.
4) with the checkpoint and station rebuild at B.Timah, MY basically have a base right at the SG heart center.

maybe SG gov see a better solution than LKW-Dain deal, they move their checkpoint to woodland first and ask MY to move to woodland instead of B.Timah.

Then, with 907 years lease remaining. Najib ended the lease, for the greater benefit of SG.

He should have include the return of water/air space around batu puteh and other light house to MY. Show him some cash only he happily jump in, teruk lah.

Added on May 26, 2010, 6:32 pmThen again, give Malaysia the heart land of London, New York and Tokyo.

The only thing the gov leader will do is to sell it at a good price before they lose their office. Never really think about nation future.

Added on May 26, 2010, 6:37 pmI love to take train from T.Pagar to KL at midnight... It is very nice experience if you have the time to enjoy it.

well, I used to travel back to selangor on friday night and back on sunday night... many years ago. The custom, the bus system had change alot since then but it is still a nice experience today. Let me share my old and new experience.

(Old)
friday night the path between the old woodland checkpoint and Larkin is a war zone for many people. Those who been there done that should know how bad it was. Taking train have no such worry and sweat. I can start packing after I finish work, shower, dinner. Go to train station in a relax mood. At most there are just one train load of people there. I order the teh halia and nasi goreng kampung at the station mamak stall (nice) while looking at people clearing the check point and luggage check from the my table. I will be the last few to clear the custom and there is always a seat or a bed available me. To me the flat bed is much better than those 20 seated bus.

Leaving SG ~12 midnight, reach the old train station ~7am. Just nice to catch the early connecting bus to my home town. If I take a midnight bus from SG, I will reach pudu at 4am. have to wait till 6am for any local bus.

If I decide not to sleep, I can read a book on the train. Hop down at Gemas station to buy Kopi O panas and Karipup or a nasi lemak at canteen on the train. Or to unwind myself with the cold wind and night scene from the train door.

last time we clear two custom at one go. No traffic jam from on the rail road. No more tayar celup and sleepy yet speeding express bus driver. The best of all, no more long waiting hour at the Pudu station or Klang bus stand.

(new)
Today, I will clear MY custom and board the train at T.Pagar station then clear SG custom at woodland station. The train canteen no longer selling hot food like mee goreng or nasi goreng. Train will arrive KL sentral ~7am. With the KTM train Ticket I can buy a connecting Commuter ticket with 50% discount. I usually take the commuter to Klang station, walk about 100m and order my bak kut teh breakfast before going home.
