QUOTE(magiclover @ May 13 2010, 12:32 AM) I'm also going to start my work in raffles place in july, looking for a place to move in by end of june/ early july. Not impossible, but difficult. I got lucky once, got a room for $500 with everything 2 years back in Commonwealth area, but later the nice landlady rented out the whole unit. Now I can't find such a good deal anymore. However I wish to get a room for myself around $400 - $500, a small room doesn't matter, as long as it can accomodate a table, single bed and a closet, with washing machine and fridge facility Is that possible? |

It used to be no one wanted to be a teacher and PRs were filling the positions, but with the economic crisis suddenly everyone wants to be one (iron rice pot) and the priority is given to citizens. Commonwealth area is pretty good and convenient, I used to stay there. Used to be affordable ($500-550) but heard the rent has gone up to 650+ there.

QUOTE(Lester1987 @ May 25 2010, 11:59 AM) i supported Najib's move. at least its a win-win situation where Singapore got their land back, Malaysia gets their money. Malaysian gets to take MRT to cross the causeway for work. Singaporean gets to use MRT to cross the causeway for shopping. Cheaper toll rates for 2nd link = a lot of development will happen there soon. why not? i just think that last time Mahathir too degil. A nice side effect with the cross-border MRT is SG will be less congested, as many Malaysians can now stay and commute directly from Johor easily (now also can, but damn long commute). Many SGs may also retire to Johor to enjoy the lower cost of living, yet can easily pop back into SG when needed (but security still a big issue in Johor). Hopefully this will help push down the crazy rent rates. |

QUOTE(Jurlique @ May 25 2010, 09:34 PM) You guys are discussing about the selling of Tj Pagar KTM by MY to SG. That's just plain political suicide. Since MY lacks of $$$ currently, I would prefer if the PM Najib could sell an island/sand equivalent to the size of SG to SG. That would be win2 situation, MY gets the money whereas SG gets the land. Better still, sell 2 Johor's river to SG. I'm just waiting for Dr M/Anwar to make a big fuss about the deal. |

QUOTE(seantang @ May 27 2010, 11:23 AM) I'm not sure why so many people are so hard up about Tg Pagar. Seriously, it's not like Malaysia can 'build on, develop" or practically do anything with Tg Pagar. At best, Malaysia can only hope to bar Singapore from the land... ie. playing the spoiler. QFT.But that has absolutely no benefit for Malaysia. Some say that it's a bargaining chip or leverage for other things like the stoopid crooked bridge, water price or West Malaysians' CPF. But to be frank... Singapore's not going to even regard Tg Pagar as Malaysia's bargaining chip. They can take back Tg Pagar at any time. All they have to do is argue that their national sovereignty is being violated. No country in the world will back the 'unconditional ownership' of land in one sovereign country by a foreign country. One country cannot "own land" as a sovereign country in another sovereign country. They can of course do so as a "private sector owner or investor" but that means that Singapore can simply use compulsory acquisition laws to reacquire the land. So, for all intents and purposes, Malaysia really only "holds" the land at Tg Pagar at the leave of the Singapore govt. In my opinion, Singapore has been pretty polite about it... probably because they are simply treating it as a reserve land bank. Therefore, Malaysia is getting a good deal for Tg Pagar. If I were Singapore, I'd simply forcibly take back the land as a reprisal for stopping the sale of sand... which Malaysia stopped for "sovereignty reasons" btw. Singapore is obviously saving up some political chips for later use by agreeing to that 60/40 development arrangement. One has to look back at what happened earlier this year in SG. A leading govt think tank (ESC) published a report on the economic situation, and warned the SG govt that it can no longer rely on trade with the US and EU alone, while China is unpredictable. The recommendation was to "mend fences" with its 2 closest neighbors MY and INA. MY for historical reasons, and to develop a MY-SG relationship equal to Shenzen-HK; while INA for its vast market. INA's SBY was in SG about 2 weeks ago, getting SG to jointly-develop parts of its economy. And now Najib and the KTM deal. Seems like its all part of the plan. |

QUOTE(badzvino @ Jun 3 2010, 07:13 AM) All sifus, need some opinion here. 2200 means S-Pass permit, might be more troublesome than those holding E-Pass.What is the salary for a 1 yr experienced QS there? Currently I got 1 job offer here RM2500, as site QS. But I am thinking to further my career in Singapore. Yesterday there is an agent called me, offering $2200, but its kind of tiles supplier - Polybuilding. Anyone heard this before? Should I take it or keep waiting for another job offer? Since I am no really into supplier line, looking for developer, main-con or consultant company. I am planning to take it as a temporary job, just to set my feet in Singapore, than look for what I want. But is there any harm if I change job in few months time? I mean for my permit or whatsoever, does it affect anythg?! Please Comment, Thanks! |

IIRC, for S-pass:
1. Longer period before can apply PR (3-5 years?) 2. <SGD2500 = cannot apply dependant pass (no a big deal for most of us) 3. Quota and foreign worker levy (now $50, will increase later this year) -> your boss pay, but usually comes from your salary |

QUOTE(bloggerblue @ Jun 8 2010, 12:36 PM) i check from ICA The SMC you need to pay money, IIRC SGD5000 for processing, no guarantee will get.foreigners residing overseas who are interested to study, work and live in Singapore may apply for in-principle approval for permanent residence by submitting an application through SMC Management Consultants Pte Ltd in Singapore provided they satisfy certain guidelines. IPA for PR... hmm.. any different from PR in SG? IPA gives you 1 year to look for a job in SG, once you get a job you get PR. QUOTE(Dyong @ Jun 8 2010, 12:46 PM) For 2nd generation PR, the option of renoucing PR status does not give much leeway to subsequent PR re-application via own merits. The termination of earlier dependent PR can be viewed as ostentatious/ conscientious bid to escape from civic duty liable, considering the fact that you have had "enjoyed" the puny benefit that the state has given to PR. I've heard about this as well. |
