Just noticed today that my HTPC most likely got fried during a thunder storm !

It was a MA785 MOBO with additional Prodigy soundcard.  Seriously I don't know if its just the Mobo or PSU that was at fault.

If I were to remake another HTPC, may I ask what is the latest best budget Mobo that can at least capable of decoding True HD ?

Thanks.

Actually I just bought myself an AMD Fusion netbook, acer Aspire One 522 that comes with a HDMI line out for 10' screen. Pretty impressive for the price.

But does this Fusion set able to deliver FullHD Sound thru the HDMI ?

price is a bit stiff at this moment, was quoted ~500 for ASUS E35M1-M PRO, prefer over msi & gigabyte as it is using passive cooling if not mistaken

jagung, is you project undergoing  , decided ?  pls share your to-be spec? maybe i would like to join the bandwagon too..
*
Sorry for late reply just got back from overseas. My to be spec is simple.. just to share some great programs im using.
XBMC will be my main media center, best media center ever...tried media portal but not as good... xbmc is much more simpler and prettier in my opinion... get boxee if u prefer an alternative.
Utorrent with Dropbox if i ever need to queue a torrent file remotely from my office...google this if u need a step by step guide.
The Renamer. Great program to automatically rename ur video files individually or by batch..

Now for my rig.. im looking at 2 possibilities.. either the AMD fusion or Intel Sandy Bridge.. to compare both
Sandy (Asus P8H67-I DELUXE) would be an overkill for what i only need..but i don't mind looking pass the high price tag but for its faster and upgradeable CPU...definitely great for games.. delayed due to flaws on earlier chipset.. who knows when exactly its gonna reach Malaysia...

Fusion (Asus E35M1-I DELUXE) would be value for money, plus i really like the heatsink from Asus...it would definitely make a very quiet HTPC...the downside is to forget about upgrading to a better graphics card or playing high end games, I have a PS3 i doubt i would. With an empty PCI slot, i can only think of adding in a sound card.. Someone posted earlier about HD audio pass through, according to another forum the answer is yes..I was told by Asus Malaysia that its already available in our market , but i have not seen resellers selling them yet, I'm arranging to get it directly from Asus...

Then again with sandy i would need to rethink on the type of chassis and room in it to dissipate the heat, its going to be hot if i my plan is to fit in 2 x 2TB 3.5" HDDs, fusion would fit perfectly on any type of chassis. There are so many chassis but so few to choose from.. but i've shortlisted a few which is Lian-li PC-Q08 or PC-Q11 and Silverstone SG05.

Eventually this baby its gonna be hooked up to a Onkyo AVR (HT-S3300).

onkyo SR606. I also want to bitstream to TRUE/DTS HD sound.
Your method is workable with mkv files, what about iso format? MPC-HC unable to read the bluray menu yet right? So i only use PowerDVD10 but still unable bitstreaming HD sound:(

But our problem is as long as enable the TRU/DTS HD option in ffdshow audio configuration, screen become choppy/crack sad.gif Screen will come back normal after I uncheck those option. Really no idea what is the happen doh.gif  doh.gif  doh.gif

Bro, where u get MKV file to bitstream Full HD sound??? If u want to play ISO format then u can try TMT3.
I was mention b4 mostly is some sound/video codec cause the screen become choppy/crack, if wanna confirm u have full clean the sound/video codec which cause the problem, i suggest format the HTPC and reinstall new windows again, then try follow the step from the link i post here.

Actually XBMC not fully support to bitstream HD audio. Need to use TMT3/PowerDVD/MPC to play movie with HD audio

I never use XBMC, i use WMC with MY Movies install, it can play Blu-Ray inside folder and ISO format with TMT3. But too bad that My Movies need to pay to active the movies backdrops.

Update:

Dismantled the PSU, found a burnt fuse ( I didn't know there is a fuse in PSU !) and some charred Board inside .

Bought myself a Be Quiet PSU rated 350W for replacement. The HTPC ran smoothly again, but the board date has been re-set. So it was a lightning strike that actually probably affect the Mobo, but did not actually destroy the Mobo.

Feedback on the New PSU:

Be Quiet Power 4 rated at 350W with good efficiency (>80%), cost RM120+ I think, its very quiet. Can be considered for HTPC builder.

Yr place must have bad earthing or something... usually thunderstorm/lightning blow the cordless or modem connected to telephone lines..

Very seldom heard it blows the PSU... any other electrical appliance in the house got blown too ?

For PSU, I usually recommend ppl to go for high quality and 500W or above cos the PSU will outlast everything else... mobo/cpu/gpu/ram, so a good quality ones will last more than 5 years or so..

Nothing else blown. Strange enough. As you said, I think our house may need better earthing. Will wait for the electrician to come and provide his opinion.
