Can I ask a few questions here?

Im not very good in these kinda topics.

But let's say you're interested in recording stuffs from A**ro,
would you get this or a dvd-recorder or ac ryan dvr?
From what I see, this is the most expensive option sice
you need to have a pc, then buy the hardware to make it work while you could purchase a acryan dvr or a dvd recorder around rm700.

So what is the advantage of HPTV?

Many thanks in advance

Hey peeps,

Did some basic reading on HTPC. I'll keep it short.

Say, if I have a :-

- PC
- 5.1 sound system
- LCD

I have quite a collection of HD/BRrips/.MKV movies. So can I hook them up like below ?

speakers <> PC <> TV

Will I have a decent/good 5.1 surround sound experience?

5.1, lets say ... HT-SF470 Sony.

PC has DVi. But I can get a HDmi converter.

Do I need extra device? Can I not hook all speakers to PC's back panel IO ports?

HT-SF470 have HDMI in, good enough.
not all DVI have audio out enabled, please check your video card spec.
if ur video card have hdmi out, such as 5 series ATi will be the best. can transmit HD Audio Bitstream to home theater system.
why you need to hook all Sony HT-SF470 speaker to PC back panel? doh.gif

Ok ill check graphic card spec. If audio transmit is supported then all I need is to hook up hdmi to tv and all audio speaker cables to the back of the tv right ?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge in this matter laugh.gif laugh.gif

nope. the best idea in this way:

pc hdmi out --- HT-SF470 --- TV

from pc can connect any of HT-SF470 3 HDMI-in and 1 HDMI-out to connect to LCD TV.

yes. from our discrete graphic card.
now Intel also improve the HD playback on their IGP, onboard HDMI out also can.

this is best idea, as we know HDMI can carries both 1080p Video and HD Audio. enjoy thumbup.gif

currently i connected some devices like pc/astro/ps3 to my tv,

do you mean,

pc--->HomeTheatre<--->TV--->Asto & PS3

so all my devices will have the sound if only my HT set comes with both input & output

am i right?

if you have decent home theater AVR, not only PC;
All blu-ray player, PC, astro, PS3, Wii or dvd player, should connect direct to AVR via HDMI. nowadays, most of new AVR have at least 4 HDMI in, should be enough for home user. if still not enough, get the HDMI switching hub.

then only 1 hdmi out cable to TV from AVR for video display. AVR are the center. if you want local tv channel back to AVR, no problem. connect the normal stereo RCA back to AVR input for sound. i guess no need guo.....

anything mkv (or any other video for that matter) i relegated to xbmc. mainly because just about anything could be done using the remote.
and for bluray i use an integration of totalmedia theater 3 (for playback) and mediabrowser (for interface).

switching between xbmc and mediabrowser are done using a media centre plugin

mkv with lossless needs to be played media player classic or windows media player or anything else that supports ffdshow codec.
bluray with lossless can be played with totalmedia theater 3 that supports full menu and bitstream.

Added on March 18, 2011, 9:33 pmand not to forget you could configure xbmc to run with the internal dsplayer that supports ffdshow thus allowing hd audio bitstream.
