Hi all, i hope i am asking this in the correct section.

I am thinking about getting MS Office 2008 (as it is the only one widely available in the market now) for my mac. My question is that because i am working mostly on MS Office 2003 formats for work on my Windows work laptop, will compatibility be an issue? Will the formatting of the file run? How about for excel and powerpoints?

I appreciate any feedbacks from all of you. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for both of your replies, daydreaming and crazyee.

After posting the question earlier today, i actually got an evaluation copy and it does run a bit, in terms of formatting for Word as the styles and formats are all messed up. Other than that, everything seems to be fine.

Crazyee, i would have proposed for upgrade to MS 2008 but then again, most of the files i received are from large financial institutions, which would then, make me go back to square one.

But anyway, thanks for your inputs. Appreciate it.

one thing have to be remembered is that macos is tailor made for mac hardwares and fully functions best together

windows are designed to run on different types of system/hardwares and it works correctly/best with properly supported devices/drivers.

to expect windows to work like macos in a mac hardware is... what should i put it as.. umm.. (put ur term here)

i believe i read somewhere.. battery life on macos is much better than in windows when running in macbook

Using Mac OS mate. I have tried googling for answers, most of them suggested using Terminal to tweak the sleep mode settings. Something along the line of switching the default sleep mode of #3 to #0. But the main issue here is I'd like to know what cause this happen?

@acid_head,
If U want to purchase through the Education Discount, U can onli do so at the Online Appre Store. Machines don't have the scheme but I did read somewhere that EpiCentre/Switch does have some sort of student discount; I'm not too sure though.

@nickilala,
That's bad but yeah it could be a power supply regulator problem. If the MB is still under warranty, take it back to see if U can get it fixed biggrin.gif I hope nothing happened to the actual system.

I think Office 2003 should be no problem? But as you said, the formatting "lari" a bit from your experience. I guess it happens la.

From experience, if you are used to Office 2007 and you use a lot of their new features, you may be disappointed with Office for Mac 2008. I noticed quite a fair bit of features in Office 2007 are missing in Office 2008. To note a few off my head, icon based filters doesn't work in excel; the excellent drawing features with gridlines and stuff in Word 2007 is nonexistent; equations are also missing in word. I use these features a lot after upgrading to Office 2007 and not having them in Office 2008 is very disappointing to me. If you're coming from earlier versions of Office then you wouldn't miss these features.

Do u all have problem with the sound while u r watching movie??
I realize that the movie sound sometime will become 1 side(left or right) only while i tap the touchpad to pause and resume the movie.. sometime the movie sound will just missing and need to press pause and then resume or drag the movie timing bar to get back the sound~

i realize these while i am using XP and it is quite frequent~ i am not sure MacOS got this problem not coz i seldom use MacOS to watch movie~ smile.gif

I need to know it is hardware problem or software problem.. if it is hardware problem then i have to send it for warranty before my macbook warranty expired~

erm one thing to keep in mind is that the 9400M doesnt support openCL / CUDA. not important today, but who knows what can the benefits be in the future

May I ask where do you get this info?

According to

http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

this is what I found:

QUOTE
OpenCL

requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:

    * NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
This means that 9400M does support OpenCL. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm going to buy a MBP soon, and this info will help me to decide which MBP to buy. smile.gif

oh my bad. i remembered i read somewhere that someone stated the 9400M doesnt support CUDA. i recalled saying to myself it was wise for me to go for the 9600gt ;p. but then i also read in an nvidia brochure that all 8-series and above supports CUDA. so the latter is correct.

9400M DOES support CUDA. but what we're hoping is for the ability to run an MBP from just the 9400M, but any openCL / CUDA processes will be sent to the otherwise inactive 9600gt. in theory it sounds pretty great, but not sure whther apple will allow this or not.

There are times i couldn't rely on Mac OS.. such as Video or 3D rendering. I need the machine to render my stuff for hours. This is my only working machine.

guys wonder this question has been raised b4..

when u switch off the laptop...
u gently touch the Alu case, can u feel vibration on it, like something charging or the hardware is spinning ....

Tried unplug my USB cablea and the vibration stop.....is this normal? do u guys leave the usb cable/ firewire on the mac

Another thing is ....is it harmful that leaving the charging cradle charge your laptop all day long? or u guys just unplug when u switch off the mac

Thanks

@terencetoo,
Congratulations on the new toy! *smiles*

1) I think what you feel can't be described as vibrations; they're more like 'static shock' is it?! If that is what U feel then it's pretty normal but it doesn't only happen when U switch the MBP off, at least not on mine tongue.gif

2) Hmm.. the "vibration" sound goes away when U unplug ur USB/FW? Er.. could that vibration sound be coming from an external HDD? It's just powering off or something when U unplug it - *shrugs*

3) I don't know what a charging cradle is but I am usually on power supply. Something to note is that U should calibrate your battery once a month. I've uhm.... killed 2 batts and this current one is dying; damn.. I need to learn how to take care of my batts more sad.gif

I don't know if it's vibration or what, but I think I know what you mean.

When the power cable is on and I touch the aluminum surface, it doesn't feel smooth. Can feel the "vibration"

But when I unplug the power cable and touch the surface, it feels smooth...

The feel when touching the aluminum surface is different when the power cable is plugged in or unplug..
