my earphone dock got problem. Is like when I plug in my earphone, i need to turn and twist the "connector" to get the right sound. it seems loose.

Should I claim for warranty? I just got my mac in May.
*
i cant recall but i read sumwhere that the unibody macbooks (and pros) and the new ipods with mic support uses a different kind of headphone port. instead of just two 'rings' for left n right channel, they have three...the extra one for the mic. somehow this port is slightly loose than normal. when plugging in my headphone to my mbp, i also have to adjust the jack sometimes to get it to sound right. i didnt have to when i plug it into my 1st gen ipod touch (old port, no mic) and also my previous 2006 mbp.

i second that the 9400M can handle the tasks u wanna do. abt starcraft2... so far blizzard always launch games that scale to slower hardware well, so no worries.

the applecare warranty you can get it anytime within the 1st year of ur mac, so u can save up on that later. i hope the difference of rm400 isn't that hard to save up in 12 months.

also, factor in some money to spend on protection accessories n such

My protection on my aluminum MacBook 13" >> Moshi Codex 13 White SE > Speck See-Thru Clear> Moshi iVisor 13AG> Moshi Clearguard > Moshi Palmguard > Moshi Shieldpad.

LOL protection kaw kaw. Don't know why I just love Moshi stuff. Very apple-ish and simple.

*
im a moshi fan as well haha. but y u get speck seethru AND codex? kind of redundant ;p n i never knew got codex white SE haha

hi all i have been reading alot bout the nvidia geforce 9400m chipset which integrates the mobo chipset and gpu
after few several research reading thru anandtech n stuff they did mention it has a discreet gpu equivalent to a 9600gt
does this apply to the 13inch macbook pro as well? or only the 15-17 inch models?
*
lemme clear it up...all macbook pros has the 9400M. as u said, it acts as a mobo chipset and could also provide respectable graphic performance. its pretty much the best integrated graphics right now. however, where u're wrong is that it does not have a discreet GPU equivalent to a 9600GT. integrated graphics is just integrated graphics. what they meant is that certain macbookpro models has the 9600GT in addition to the 9400M. Yes, they have TWO GPUs, the 9400M for better battery life and the 9600GT for more horsepower smile.gif

the 13-inch and basic 15-inch macbookpro only have the 9400M. the higher ones, including the 17-inch, have 9400M + 9600GT

however, for the models that have both GPU, the GPUs doesnt work together. u can set to only run the 9400M, leaving the 9600GT "off" for longer battery life since the 9400m uses less power. however when u choose to use the 9600GT, the 9400m will then only act as the mobo chipset without doing any graphic processing. this is because the 9600GT is just pure GPU, not a chipset smile.gif

oh okay thanks alot taht clear up my mind alot
how is the performance on the 9400? imm planning to get a mac to give it a try on a new platform i been stuck with windows all this while
but ill be also doing some light gaming and alot of hd movie viewing h264 formats of course
games taht ill be playing would be starcraft 2 and diablo 3 which is available for the mac system
*
http://www.macworld.com/article/136214/200...l?lsrc=rss_main

it scored around 39 fps in Quake 4. for comparison, the 9600GT scored 59 fps. in other words, the 9400M is nothing to shout about, but it is pretty decent. can actually use for gaming.

i have no idea what are the requirements for starcraft2 and diablo3 but judging from past releases, blizzard games scales down to slower quite hardware quite good.

erm one thing to keep in mind is that the 9400M doesnt support openCL / CUDA. not important today, but who knows what can the benefits be in the future

Added on August 22, 2009, 11:54 amoh ya, if u're looking for benchmarks or reviews on the 9400m, make sure they specifically mentioned the 9400m in macbooks. there's another card out there named 9400M GS, which is a dedicated GPU, so it is obviously much faster.

also, do not think the macbook 9400M is based on the 9400GS or vice versa. they are two totally different chips. the macbook 9400M is based on the slower nvidia 9100.

for h.264 there won't be a problem smile.gif

to monitor temperature im just using a widget called iStat nano. it also shows other details such as cpu, ram, fans, battery, processes detail n stuff but im sure there are better softwares out there. i just love the simplicity of the iStat.

for installing windows7 u can refer here: http://gizmodo.com/5132325/how-to-install-...using-boot-camp i havent done it myself though, not enough free space haha. will be doing it when i can save up for a new HDD

i believe most of us here juz use 1 partition for our mac. the point of having different partitions in windows is so that they are easier to maintain (e.g. juz defrag the C:\). in OSX u dont need to do those chores.

its a different story if u're talking about separating system/apps and files/documents on different hard disks though. but then since this is a macbook thread so out of topic already ;p

I know u can tick always open when u right click the file and select the program u wanna use..
But how to do it like windows where like when u set avi files to be open by VLC means all avi files also open by vlc..
Not just the particular file..
*
right click the file and go to Get Info

expand the 'Open with' and select the application u wanna use. then click Change All

it feel not, but technically it does
apple spent time to tweak the surface of the trackpad to get the best gesture
(watch the unibody macbook vid)

technically, adding another layer thing on a surface definitely make different on the sensitivity.

adding this so call protector layer doesn't you dont ever have to clean the surface again.
*
of course technically it does, but what matters is how do we feel about it. the lower sensitivity is very minor and u wont even realise it. the difference is the texture...less smooth but more grip. which i unexpectedly like smile.gif however im talking abt the moshi trackguard here, not sure with other brands.

i love my macbook pro original look and feel so i want it to be that way as long as possible. from my past i reckon im the kind of person who accidentally scratch a notebook a lot, so this time i wanna prepare b4 anything bad happen.

May I ask where do you get this info?

According to

http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

this is what I found:
This means that 9400M does support OpenCL. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm going to buy a MBP soon, and this info will help me to decide which MBP to buy.  smile.gif
*
oh my bad. i remembered i read somewhere that someone stated the 9400M doesnt support CUDA. i recalled saying to myself it was wise for me to go for the 9600gt ;p. but then i also read in an nvidia brochure that all 8-series and above supports CUDA. so the latter is correct.

9400M DOES support CUDA. but what we're hoping is for the ability to run an MBP from just the 9400M, but any openCL / CUDA processes will be sent to the otherwise inactive 9600gt. in theory it sounds pretty great, but not sure whther apple will allow this or not.

hi newbie here, js wondering if i would like to install VMware fusion for win XP is it necessary to do another partition for tat particular drive?! Is VMware fusion the most common use virtual drive?
smile.gif thanks for reading...alot more to learn...
*
no need. that's the nice thing about virtual machines, u dont need to mess around with partitions and formatting and stuff. virtual machines kinda boots another OS on top of a 'fake' (hence the name virtual) system.

it will create a file that contains the whole OS, as if its another computer. if one day u want to remove it, juz delete the file. no hard disk erase or anything. very simple to use, n a great way to 'experiment' with other OS

other alternatives include Parallels Desktop and Sun VirtualBox (free). in my opinion, parallels is the best smile.gif well worth the money

thanks for ur advice..how abt can i do a partition in my wind xp??
*
that's possible as well. u need Boot Camp Assistant for that (its built in, not another app). its creates a separate partition on ur harddrive (it wont mess up the OSX partition) then u just have to insert the windows dvd, it will then reboot and start installing windows like any other computer would. when its done, insert the OSX dvd to install drivers (u only need to install a single program that will install all drivers for u, u dont have to install drivers one by one).

if u want to delete the partition, boot camp assistant will let u merge ur harddisk back to a single partition. again, the OSX partition will not be harmed

guys, if wanna change my uMB's hard drive, should i do any installation *software* to the new one b4 i slot it in my hard drive slot? i watched this youtube video, this person is using some connecting wires (??) to install the mac os x and apps in from old hard drive 1st only he change the hard drive.
*
im guessing the connecting wires are just normal USB or firewire cable. juz plug in the external harddrive and start the OSX installation. later go to disk utility and set to install on the external. i've never tried this but i think it would work :S

however if u're installing to another harddrive via a USB / firewire connection...it would be slower compared to installing to internal harddrive.

I finally found a convenient image viewer days ago.

http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html

try this since it is free.. Exactly viewing picture like how we do in XP..

I actually feel fussy with the Command+A. It will select folders i don't want. It requires a few steps to do the job well than just a simple click like XP.
*
i tried a few alternatives to Preview before and i'd say Xee is my favourite. but i still prefer Preview to Xee. there was something very annoying about Xee to me but i can't recall what ;P
