You can feed them superworms but mealworms are prefered as they have less fat. Only feed superworm to adult.
Superworm can bite and hurt hedgehog. Fact or myth? It's a myth. Imagine that you're being bitten into pieces, do you have enough energy to bite back? Also, in the wild, hedgehog are known to hunt scorpion and they are immune to the poison of some scorpion. TeliLeti, how's your hoglets?? This post has been edited by Ken.B: Aug 17 2011, 01:01 PM |

Hi everyone, I got my new hedgie just last week, she will always curl up when try to pick her up from her cage but once I put her in my hand, she probably knows me and starts walking around to explore from my hand to my laps. Is there anyway to not make her scared and curl up everytime I reach my fingers bear her? Or does this take some time for her to get accustomed to. Thank you! Will post some pics if her soon~

it's normal for them to do that.
run > poo > run > stop > sniff > get down > poo > get back on //loop it's too random to make sense of it. since sometimes it seems natural for my hog to stop, get off then poo. but at other times her wheel still gets poo patches here and there. |

in theory the more you handle your hog, the more it will become accustomed to you and eventually open up.
but in reality, they are different individuals :P for instance mine has never ever balled up when i pick her up. which makes me kinda.. let's just say i'm missing out on this whole balling up phenomenon ,_, and on the other end of the spectrum we have huffster. telileti has tried prolly every trick in the book and he still sees her as a potential threat ._x so i guess what i'm trying to say is the answer you seek when asking how long it takes for a hog to be friendly to it's caretaker is highly subjective :P |

He sits in my lap while I watch TV nowadays. I think he likes being cuddled. Plus, I've been bribing him after I pick him up everytime. I'm 'conditioning' his mind to think that getting picked up is good. Just like I've conditioned Chubster to associate the sound of me shaking the mealworm cup with getting treats. (She just gets up & run to the 'mealworm corner', it's hilarious) The hoglets have all started annointing. They pretty much licked & bit all over my palms. Very sticky business. And regarding the permit for 'exotic' animals, I finally got a reply from the respective department. "Not all exotic pets need licence or special permit, only those that are listed under First and Second Schedule require licence or special permit to keep. Since African Pygmy Hedgehog are not listed under Act 716, thus African Pygmy Hedgehog need no licence or special permit to keep the animal."
