I'm currently on the hunt for a vet that can check up on hedgehogs.
I've found a few on the vet list thread.
I'll be calling them soon for a quote on prices.

a.) Can anyone tell me what questions should I ask when I visit the vet?

b.) What should I put the hedgehog in when I bring him to the vet? (I don't have a carrier for hedgehogs/small pets)

c.) What's the price range for a regular visit to the vet? An approximation would do just great! (Just want to compare & ensure that the vet doesn't overcharge)

d.) What else should I get the vet to do other than a check-up? Vaccination? Shots for lice/mites?

The only time I can touch my hedgehog without him huffing like crazy is when he's eating. Why? xD

He was salt & pepper when I bought him. After he finished quilling, he turned out to be a snowflake.

Where can I buy a playpen & for how much?
I'm on the lookout for them at the pet store here on LYN but no one seems to sell one suitable for hedgies.

Hedgies look so cute when asleep. xD

For the past week or so, Huffy's been curling up all of a sudden without any sudden moves/changes from me or the environment.
I've asked someone on a hedgehog forum & they said it's 'boy time'. xD

What do you think?
I hope it's not a seizure or something.

He 'used to be a salt & pepper' until he completed quilling this month and turned out to be a snowflake. smile.gif

BTW, anyone using kritters crumble? I find it better than woodshaving.

Thanks. smile.gif
Hmm, no, never heard/seen them before.
From what I've read on the internet about it thus far, it seems like a pretty good bedding to use.

I wonder if it clumps.

I'll certainly look out for them in stores next time.

My hedgie got horny again...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Should I include calcium supplements in his food then?

I found some old discussion on calcium supplements right here in this thread.

Why not just buy the live mealies from a local pet shop?

They sell 1 small cup for RM1 here. There's about 50 mealies or so in each cup so one cup will last for nearly 2 weeks. smile.gif

Hahaha. xD

Just buy from normal shoplot pet shops next time. smile.gif
They give more meal worms and are friendlier than those workers at MidV as well.

Wow, you gave the little one the whole container?
I can't put in one whole scoop of mealies because Huffy eats ALL the mealworms before he gets started on kibble.
I could put in 200 mealies and he'll probably eat them all.

U should gutload them first before feeding them to ur hedgie...
feed them with vege, , fruits 24 hours b4 feeding them to you hedgie..
that way, ur hedgie gets the nutrition of whatever u fed them..
else, if u give the skinny, small small mealies...haha, ur hedgie gains nothing much out of it
*
Ah, no wonder my mealies are so tiny...
I'll go find an apple now.

Anyone's hedgie likes wet cat food?

I tried introducing him to it by putting some into his regular kibble. He only ate one of the tiny meaty wet cat food and then ignored the rest.

And I think he's getting sick & tired of the same regular kibble.

What food mixes do you use?

Erm, wet cat food is abit messy & mafan to prepare...

I don't see my hedgie getting sick & tired of the same regular kibble unless I changed his food/kibbles. That time he consumed only little kibbles. But after that he began to eat a lot.

I mix the kibbles with 5 mealworms & cubes of carrots/apples.

Just make sure that you don't change your food regularly. Give it a month or two for it to adapt the food

Mhmm, because I researched somemore and discovered that eating hard food all the time might cause tooth damage. The problem is, my hedgie is mainly carnivorous since he doesn't like the veges & fruit that I've given him thus far. He dislikes coriander, broccoli, rice, pear and mint.
He only eats really soft & ripe papaya in minimal amounts.

I should try apples & carrots soon. biggrin.gif Thanks!

I gave him a star anise (bunga cengkih) after mum used it to cook curry yesterday to see if he'll annoint as he rarely does it. I washed the curry off, of course.
I guess the smell was pleasant to him. He annointed till he fell over and didn't even realise it.

When I bought him, I bought the kibble from the breeder as well.

I was told that the kibble was of high quality but I don't know the brand of the food. It's pretty hard but my hedgie manages to crush it with a few well-placed bites.

Thanks for the tip. smile.gif
I should look for a new type of kibble since I need to start switching his food to another brand before I run out.

IAMS or RC better?

Alright thanks! biggrin.gif

As for the Earthbath shampoo, I don't remember if I've seen it in petstores but I'll look out for them.
Why not just use the real thing- oatmeal? smile.gif

But for hoglet,it needs extra protein,so take RC36. smile.gif.
Me also try to find that kind of shampoo, but some of the forumer here use johnson&johson baby milk shampoo... as long as it does not contain tree oil..
*

My hedgie's 3 month old. Is he still considered a hoglet?
I'm using an oatmeal & aloe vera shampoo on my hedgie. Aloe vera is considered unsafe for hedgies but there's only a small amount in it & I've used it on my hedgie without any problem.

QUOTE(jitshiong @ Jun 8 2011, 12:39 PM)
IAMS is not that good. RC better.
*

Ah, normal price for RC32?
I asked at a petshop just now & it was RM81 for 4kg. D:
I've never had to buy kibble from a pet store so I don't really know.

QUOTE(east_wing @ Jun 8 2011, 12:55 PM)
How about Ultra Blended 8 in 1.?
*
From my research, certain hedgie owners think that commercial hedgie food is not optimum. They recommend it to be mixed with high quality cat/dog food. biggrin.gif

I went hunting for RC32 and Kitten yesterday.

Found a petshop selling 8 month old SnP hedgies at RM150 each.
There were two of them (I think they're both male), just curled up in the glass display window with such little space to move. sad.gif

No toys or hiding space, just 1cm of wood shavings as bedding.

Commercialized hedgehog food is not recommended among hedgehog owners, as far as I know. smile.gif

Best stick with RC32, as costly as it may be.

If you decide to buy the pellet, look out for the ingredient list and nutrition box.
Avoid buying food containing too much fat (more than 12%), preservatives, chemical and of course, by-products.

I'm buying the RC Kitten 36 for my 3 month old hedgie later today. Might buy it in a larger pack if it's cheaper so I might sell a large portion of it off.

I believe RC32 is more suitable for adult hedgies. smile.gif
From what I've googled up, hedgies are fed RC36 (Kitten) up to 5 or 6 months. smile.gif

Would anyone like to share cost of buying RC 36 with me?

It's RM84 for a 4kg package.
We can split 2kg each, so it'll cost RM42 for 2kg?

Hmm, seems like a good idea then. The pet store nearby work is selling the 400g package of RC36 at RM14.

I guess I should get that one first. smile.gif

My hedgie's a stubborn and picky eater. He refuses to eat the kibble that's been left out for a few hours so sometimes I leave it there till he gets hungry enough to eat it as well.

I've tried giving him papaya, broccoli, mint, cilantro, pear, carrots and wet cat food. He likes none but mealworms, which I feed on alternate days, like you - 5 each (or a few more if he's super grumpy).

He sleeps nearly 18 hours a day and has little exercise (the person I'm buying the wheel from is not responding quickly so hedgie has no wheel). I turned his playpen into his cage so he has a big space to walk around now.

Where did you get the multivitamin for water? biggrin.gif
