Those are Vista drivers, he requested for the not officially supported XP drivers.
To Jcvendetta, you'd have to dig deep into the previous thread to find the drivers.

Try HERE but some driver fail to install.

THis is vista driver. HP doesnt provide xp driver for this model.

if i open the bios update using wine in linux, would there be a problem?
plus, i'm using cq40-406au (bought from tesco, using amd athlon ql-64), is that bios suitable for my lappie?

I think the BIOS updater is only for Windows XP or Vista. You can try download it and run it. It is a Windows based flashing program.

If compare AMD with Core2Duo, which one will be better?

AMD has advantage over the graphic card, Intel has the advantage on faster processor in most of the models

yeah .but in normal usage i think you hardly can feel the different

But i feel the processor speed should be the same cos intel only 32bit, amd with 64 bit. If see thru eyes sure cant see the diff, lol.

If compare CPU only C2D is much better. Faster clock per clock, cooler and battery last longer. AMD's 780G platform is good thanks to the HD3200 GPU. The CPUs are comparable to the previous Core Duo only.

Both Intel and AMD supports 64 bit nowdays. 64bit doesnt mean better performance. If the apps, games is not optimised for 64 bit, performance will drop. 64bit Windows supports 32 bit apps/games by using emulation through WOW(Windows on Windows)

Ya...the higher the clock speed the hotter it gets. But your cpu will reduce the clock speed if what you do if not performance-hungry.

i bought a CQ40-401AX last tuesday (21/4), with 2GB RAM and Vista SE.

i started having problems by thursday, and by saturday, the whole system went down.

yesterday the unit was sent to hp service centre, where the technician checked the unit and reported of a suspected faulty system board.

nevertheless, i got my replacement unit today, though the vendor does not seem to be happy with the term 'suspected' used by hp.

question: since all i ever did besides using the net was play NWN 2, could it be that CQ40 is not safe enough to play a 2006 title without burning or is it just a faulty unit?

i think it all depend on the processor architecture .

Is it BSOD? or your com keep shutting down?

I got a 401AX also.
Install vista myself but got lots of BSOD (no idea why ).
After that. i just pay cold hard cash to computer shop to help me install xp (and drivers) in the com.
Cheap too, considering the troubles to do it.

you shouldnt be worried. i have not encountered a single BSOD since i got my lappie last september. Now using it as 24hr download machine because wana save electricity bill(rig takes too much power). From my experience BSOD comes up when the system is not stable because of overclock or hardware failure. since your laptop is still under warranty, I suggest u push it to the max to test its stablity and reliability.

system can't even boot, no display whatsoever.. just blinking caps and num lock lights. and it was not ram problem either, confirmed on that.

the thing i'm afraid of is the display got fried after playing NWN2 (medium and low setting only), cause i'm planning on trying fallout 3 afterwards

Dude, i game with fallout 3 on this lappy on med setting with no problem at all. (been two weeks)
So you shouldn't worry too much.
Besides,shady is right. You should tax your lappy to the fullest when you still have warranty.
So, then you will know the limitation of the lappy.

cost me rm2019 with 4GB ram. not bad I guess..

the problem with this laptop is that it's too hot!

the battery won't last as long as Intel's laptop..

but it's good value for money.. the graphic card in the laptop is way better

than the rubbish Intel GMA 4500HD..

just depends on how you use it, if you don't use it for gaming, for what purpose you need that dedicated graphic?

Amd processor is hot than C2D but for batt, mine can last abt 2 hours+ for normal use like surfing n chatting. For those laptop batt can last longer is b cos got stat energy star ba,

You can use dual channel but the peformance difference compared to single channel would be minimal because of AMD's intergrated memory controller.

All these games can play only some need to tweak the graphics settings abit to get decent fps.

There is no need to enable it. It is automatically enabled. AMD Overdrive and CPUID cant report it. Not sure why but maybe because HP's OEM Keyboard. If you use any memory bandwith test software, you will notice some performance increase when using two sticks. Its minimal though, and wont be noticable in real world.


Pls make sure both sticks are DDR2 800. If either one is DDR2 667, both sticks will run in the lowest speed. The bundled RAM is DDR2 667 so even you add another DDR2 800, both will run at DDR2 667.

If you are willing to sacrifice some quality, should be ok. Eg, run at 800x600 and lowest graphic settings.

It will be enabled automatically if the size and the speed of the RAM is the same regardless of manufacturer, serial and production date. Eg, 2 sticks of DDR2 667 1GB or 2 sticks of DDR2 800 2GB. In boards nowdays are not so fussy with RAM compatibility. As I have mentioned before, the difference between single and dual channel is minimal.

Yup. finish both just last week . Mass effect is cool but last remnant kinda get stale after the first 40 hours.

there's no sound from my speaker and the card reader doesn't work in ubuntu? I tried doing the things mentioned here == it says use "options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1" but I changed it to snd-hda-ati since I'm using AMD. But still there's no sound...
Any idea I can get this 2 things work?

shady .both stick are ddr 800

I have not tried the latest ubuntu but with ubuntu 8.10, i have no problems with sound. Not sure about card reader though.


that is weird. which cq40 you are using? Mine is running at DDR2 800. Checked through Everest.

I think maybe because you are using different RAM and they have different timings for DDR2 800. AMD motherboard is quite picky n dual cahannel mode.

hi guys, just to know about the compaq presario notebook that i've seen during my visit to berjaya times square with my sister last friday. i've just check it out that the compaq presario notebook that i've seen before is using the amd athlon 64 x2 processor, but i can't remember what model of this notebook using that processor. can i know what the model is it? and where i can find this notebook? is still available yet in malaysia or already sold out?

nope, actually that command "options snd-hda-intel enable msi=1" is for Intel HD Audio, so you change it to AMD won't do a thing,

I installed win 7(64bit) on my cq40 and used the vista 64 bit drivers...so far no problems...

You're on the list. Currently the is no support from HP. Since HP doesnt care about the premium DV5z which shares the same platform with this model, I dont think you will get hybrid CF.

Im quite surprised and impressed with you guys playing latest games with this budget model.

Last time I used Win 7 first beta and the only driver problem I had was microphone not working with IDT's Vista driver.

Can you test your built in mic with Skype or etc? Last time I had problems with Win 7 using Vista drivers.

laptop cooler and desktop cooler is different .

desktop cooler can help to lower temperature significantly. but laptop cooler only can lower at most 5 celcius for the laptop imo

use a stand or table fan to blow it, it really works

I think my laptop has problem =_= and yet those freaking HP Service centre engineers has no idea why my laptop cause so hot and lags when playing any games or playing a songs up to an hours will cause lag!!

right now when I was using my laptop for first minute when starting on with Balanced battery settings the temperature was 70 C and after plug in the Notepal Infinite it comes better ... 85 C after 5 minute (original 88 C after 5 minute) and open a game after 5 minute is 99 C and it starts lags and hits until 108 C ..... =.= I touch my coolpad... it already become hot pad and it was freaking hot .... not helping + wasting money =_= why I'm so unlucky .......

lol!!!! 108C even worse than the Compaq V3000. have you updated to the latest bios? tell HP engineers to solve the problem for you, rather than spending time with the hot oven/microwave

Hi. Im a Presario Cq40-401AU user.. I stacked it with a corsair gaming memory 2 + 2 GB 800Mhz ram. I can run games like Warcraft ( high settings no lag) COD4 (med settings), COD5 (med settings but not all) Hellgate London Med settings. Installed vista ultimate 32 with no fail.. quite satisfied. the speakers is loud also.. hehehe...

Btw, I noticed now the core clock for the HD 3450 is down to 300mhz from 500mhz. I suspect HP lower down the clock speed through the latest BIOS to prevent overheating and prolong battery life. Can anyone check the core clock for HD 3450? Im very sure the speed was 500mhz when I got it first time.

ya mine 401ax bought in april is 300mhz

isn't it's 1 of the features called powerplay for AMD? where they will reduce your gpu clock speed when you're idle?

Just installed Win 7 RC and tried the mic. Seems like with Windows driver, the mic functions fine but with IDT driver there will be problem so I sticked with Win 7 drivers

Maybe the latest or previous BIOS lower down the clocks

Yes, during idle the speed will be 110mhz. But HP pull the 3D clocks down to 300mhz, which is 200mhz down from 500mhz. Expect up to 40% of performance drop during heavy 3D apps.

Which BIOS you are currently using? Maybe I want to try downgrade to old BIOS.
