Hey guys,

any idea how much 1 pc of 2gb ddr3 ram for my MBW will cost. I actually plan to get 1 piece so that I can run on 3gb ram instead of 2gb. What is the recommendable ram brand and is it a hefty job to DIY the ram replacement?

why not juz get 4gb instead? if ure using 3gb u're missing out on dual channel.

1 pc shud be around 170-190. i'd recommend corsair or mushkin. OWC and crucial is supposedly better but have to order

i downgraded back to my stock 250gb hard drive sad.gif

few months ago i mentioned after upgrading my hdd to a WD scorpio blue 500gb, i noticed bad hdd performance and it got worse over time. at 1st i thought i got a faulty unit, so after sending it back to the shop they gave me a new one. turns out the problem rose again. i went ahead and did a clean install of SL, and again after a few weeks, suffered the poor hdd performance. here's what im talking about

these are screenshots from activity monitor when i'm cloning my system (the 500gb) to the stock 250gb drive using superduper
Attached ImageAttached Image

u can see the 'valleys' which indicates there a no hdd activity. during this time my system would freeze but still can switch apps n the dock still magnifies. it gets serious that it looked like this

Attached Image

screenshot of superduper during cloning

Attached Image

copying 7gb took 25mins. the whole cloning took a whopping 12 hours! for a ~180gb system sad.gif. for comparison, i cloned my system before when it was just ~130gb and it only took 4-5 hours

i have 4gb RAM and they were never full according to activity monitor. also, transfer rate from an external hdd to another external hdd was normal. that's why i suspect the internal hdd prob. so anyone have a clue?

as i said this is the 2nd unit i got. could it be that i got two faulty hdd? damn unlucky ;p

A quick check on the pricelists on lowyat.net's front page:
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/czone.pdf : RM175 (RM350 for 2x2GB)
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/cycom.pdf: RM163 (RM326 for 2x2GB)
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/jayacom.pdf: RM165-170 (RM330-340 for 2x2GB)
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/pczone.pdf: RM160-170 (RM320-340 for 2x2GB)
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/startec.pdf: RM168-173 (RM336-346 for 2x2GB)
http://images.lowyat.net/pricelist/viewnet.pdf: RM169 (RM338 for 2x2GB)

So yeah, I'd say that charging double is definitely overpriced. Even Apple charges an extra RM359 for a CTO MacBook shipped with 4gigs of memory (http://store.apple.com/my/configure/MC207ZP/A?mco=MTM3NjY4NzQ).

You can install the memory yourself, read up page 46-50 of the user manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/MacBook_13inch_Late2009_UG.pdf) for instructions.

consider mushkin or corsair

Hi all Mac expert here,
I'm going to get one MBP unibody 13inch with the lowest spec and plan to upgrade the RAM and HDD myself later. I have a few questions need to ask.

1st question:
Seeing most of the ppl here still struggling on which RAM to buy for upgrade, perhaps maybe I should straight upgrade to 2x2GB RAM right from Apple store? I'm buying using educational price so the upgrade of the RAM cost RM323 and they are Apple certified RAM. However, I would really like to hear the opinions of all Mac experts here smile.gif

2nd question:
For the HDD, I read some review (I remember is from macperformanceguide.com but duno which section d) saying that the overall performance of Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B is better than WD 500GB Scropio Blue (no offence to those who are using WD notworthy.gif ). Just wonder anyone had tried both HDD before and mind to share their opinion?

3rd question:
Also, it seems like upgrading the RAM and HDD myself will not void the warranty from Apple right? Do I need to keep the original RAM and HDD then swap them back to my MBP when I send back to Apple for warranty claim?

4th question:
Regarding ACPP, I'm abit confuse about the years of warranty it provides. Is it total of 3 years from the date I purchase (1yr without ACPP plus 2yrs with ACPP) or total of 4 years from the date i purchase (1yr without ACPP plus additional 3yrs with ACPP)?

Thanks all experts here notworthy.gif highly appreciate your opinions.

All of the RAM listed there meets the specifications outlined on page 46 of the user guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/MacBoo...Late2009_UG.pdf, so yes they are all compatible with the MBW.

Plenty of people have installed their RAM themselves, including me. Read the user guide before you attempt the upgrade. If you think you can't do what's instructed, or if you don't have the proper tools, get someone else to do it for you.

At RM323, it's worth it to upgrade the ram directly from Apple when you order the computer. The price for 2x2GB from computer stores in KL is more or less the same, so you won't be saving much if you upgrade it yourself.

I haven't tried the Hitachi, but I'm using a WD Scorpio Blue in my MBP. No issues, but then again I'm not sure what sort of 'performance' you're after.

3rd question:
Also, it seems like upgrading the RAM and HDD myself will not void the warranty from Apple right? Do I need to keep the original RAM and HDD then swap them back to my MBP when I send back to Apple for warranty claim?
RAM and HDD are user upgradable parts, upgrading them won't void your Mac's warranty unless you break something in the process. The warranty will not cover the parts you installed yourself, so if your hard drive crashes don't expect it to be replaced under AppleCare. You won't need to swap the original parts back in unless the issue is caused by the user installed RAM/HDD.

4th question:
Regarding ACPP, I'm abit confuse about the years of warranty it provides. Is it total of 3 years from the date I purchase (1yr without ACPP plus 2yrs with ACPP) or total of 4 years from the date i purchase (1yr without ACPP plus additional 3yrs with ACPP)?
user posted image Comprende? Read up http://www.apple.com/asia/support/products/proplan.html

Thanks all experts here  notworthy.gif  highly appreciate your opinions.
