QUOTE(wei @ Nov 12 2009, 03:17 PM) Firstly you need to describe what you want to run on it. FYI I'm using it for Graphic heavy tasks such as Illustrator and Photoshop, which sometimes involve large format processings like images at 300dpi with physical size of over 10 feet or above. It's a workstation computer. I need information of all possible yet cost efficient upgrades to propose to my IT department & top management in order to get approval for an upgrade. It's not my personal computer.By looking at the spec, you have a 2003 MDD G4. The basic things you can do to bump some performance is: 1) Update your OS to 10.4.11. And reconfigure the system at the same time. 2) Add more RAM (max 2GB if possible). By doing so you should have performance close to first gen G5. But your system will still lack behind compared to dual core/ dual processor 2.0GHz or faster G5. Unless you can get G5 at good deal, else it will be more cost efficient to upgrade. But still depends what you want to do on it. |

LOL, then you should tell the management consider getting a new iMac or MacPro for long term investment. This machine is 6years old there's a limit of what it can do.

This machine is 6years old there's a limit of what it can do. That's one of my suggestions, but of course, I need to provide more than 1 suggestion in my proposal. If they hesitate to upgrade it to iMac or MacPro, what are the next best solutions? Also, can you give some tips on how I can optimize my eMac from within (although upgrading/overhauling is much better, but at least it helps, even slightly...) ? You know, there are those tips for Windows machines, but I don't know if there is any for Mac? |

Hi all, i'm currently using late 2009 Macbook white.
I found that the macbook actually quite slow when i open few program. For now, i'm opening Adium, Transmission, Safari, Real Player, and Tweetdeck. So when it comes to switching programs each other, it become very slow. Especially when i drag the real player movie time, to move fast forward or backward. Anyone experience this? Can share how should i do? Is that RAM not enough? I'm using 2GB fyi. |

Few things could lead to a slow system.
1. How full is your HDD? If you are nearing full capacity, you might want to consider getting a bigger drive. Full drives are slow. 2. What files are you playing with Real Player? HD content? Take a look at Activity Monitor. 3. Are any of the applications that you use stable? Recall if the slowdown was after installing any specific new apps. It could be that particular app using an abnormal amount of RAM. 4. A good way to tell if you have enough RAM is through Activity Monitor. Go under the Memory tab and look for the "Page Out" figure. If you get a high amount of page outs then by all means you need more RAM. As for 4GB, it you multitask frequently, then I don't see why you shouldn't go ahead with the purchase. Just got to make sure the slowdown isn't due to RAM... |

2. I'm playing guess guess guess from taiwan. It's not HD i think. 3. Stable? I'm not sure how to figure is whether is stable or not. 4. Page out is 178MB. What about yours? |

TS do us a favour will u? launch the apps u've mentioned n try playing said video in realplayer. then launch Activity Monitor (use spotlight). on the top section sort by RSIZE, then at the bottom pick System Memory. take a screenshot n post it up here
page out depends on the page in. but looking at ur apps i believe u have enough RAM and free HDD space so they shouldnt be a problem. |

QUOTE(Jing-leBelle @ Nov 28 2009, 04:44 PM) weird, when i try launch back the system that i mentioned. page in n page out doesnt stay the same. it depends on what the computer is doing. dun worry about that. also, a high page out is okay if its significantly less than page in. if page out is almost as big as page in, then u shud think abt upgrading ur RAM.The page out become 16.7MB instead of 170+mb that i said previously. wtf.. will be observe for a while more. If something goes weird i ll post the screen shot out. hehe. no need to wait until things go weird. as long as u're experiencing bad performance, take a screen shot. we wanna see what's happening when ur mac is slow. if its running fine, n u take the screenshot, it wouldnt help |

Are you running on battery when u experience the slow-down?
Check under your "Energy Saver" setting and see if the performance is set to best. Newer MacBooks are design to put power consumption as priority over performance. |

cos HDMI is a TV standard, and Apple is looking at the future... HDMI can't power up the 30" Cinema display, and AFAIK, you can't take a HDMI cable and attach to most projectors...

QUOTE(syyang85 @ Nov 29 2009, 09:04 AM) displayport is VESA standard... only the mini-DP is apple's. which is now VESA's as well if i remember correctly. problem with HDMI is that the port takes up more space than miniDP n u know how apple likes thin products.QUOTE(xaw5126 @ Nov 29 2009, 10:45 AM) cos HDMI is a TV standard, and Apple is looking at the future... HDMI 1.4 canbut still not mainstream for computer Added on November 29, 2009, 8:27 pm QUOTE(syyang85 @ Nov 29 2009, 09:04 AM) this is mainly because, if you put hDMI, you probably have to put a VGA port at the same time, which is not the case for apple, cuz with VGA, impossible to have all the way thin (as in an inch) laptopwhat they did is better option from me, mini display port, capable to converter to whatever port with adapter HDMI 1.3 (which is common now) cannot output 30" LCD monitor. its not about the size of the display, its about the resolution.
I just saw one 100" LCD TV, resolution still 1920 * 1080... sure it looks nice... the iMac 27" is 2560 * 1440 ... so how now? and miniDisplayPort was just ratified as a VESA standard this month... so its not "their own standard" ... if you really need to connect to a HDTV with full everything (including 5.1 audio) ... just visit Kanex.com |
