QUOTE(ASAP @ Apr 16 2009, 04:24 PM)
Hi all,

I have a question concerning the memory ram in my Mac Pro. I am using the early 2009 Mac Pro and thinking to upgrade the ram from 2 gb to 22 gb ram. Currently I have 6gb which is 1+2 in first tray and 1+2 in second tray, total 6gb. I am getting additional ram of 16 gb (4 sticks x 4gb per stick). By placing the memory equally in each memory tray, will it yield different result? If I put the following sequence

First tray = 1+2+4+4 = 11 gb in first tray
Second tray = 1+2+4+4=11 gb in second tray

Is the first setup faster? or

Frist tray = 2+4+4 = 10 gb in first tray
Second tray = 2+4+4 = 10 gb in second tray

Better? Please advise. Thank you.

For DDR3 MacPro, you better off stick to triple channel.

For FB-DIMM models, go for quad channel, meaning use 8 identical FB-DIMM if possible. Else go for 2 + 2.

ie: 8x 1GB will have better performance vs 512MB x4 + 1GB x2 + 2GB x2.

You can have 2x 500GB inside your MacBook by removing the optical drive if you don't need it or occasionally need it.

Bro, you sure you pasted the right info? You're saying DR2 vs DDR3 up there, they're pretty different.

You can't get upgrade to 10.4 magically from 10.3, you need the full installer.

1 dude your mac can only support DDR2 667 cannot put any other specification

2 any brand would do,even kingston value rams

3 theres no such thing as a 3GB memory module its 1,2 and 4Gb,go with the 2x2GB configuration.

4 again just get the ram and DIY,can get the manual from ifixit or apple.com,easy.

FYI, my MBP is running 2x 2GB DDR2 800MHz. Which supposed to be 667MHz only. Just that it won't run at 800Mhz, but still works.

Question regarding RAM upgrade:

I have a MacBook Pro (Early '08) 2.4GHz and tried to upgrade to 4GB. I bought Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G x 2 sticks.
The funny part is I can't boot up (screen blank) with either stick individually or paired. But it works fine if I put the existing 1GB + new KVR667D2S5.
Can anyone tell me what is the issue? I read somewhere that MBP prefers kingston certified RAM, I think the code is MB.. something.
But I was browsing thru forums and saw number of people had no problems with this ram model?

Thanks.

There're issues with KVR module on Mac lately. Try avoiding KVR. Maybe you should try Corsair/Team/KTA.

Just did some upgrade to my Mac Pro.
Now running 2x 500GB RAID Edition Drive as boot drive. Boot volume is RAID-0. Data is on own volume.

Added another 2x OWC 2GB FB-DIMM and removed the 512MB modules. Running only first 2 bay for both memory riser for better performance.

Lastly a GPU upgrade to XFX 4870 1GB DDR5.

@jinaun,
I once had a very unscrupulous dealer servicing my Macs (for the office).  He would charge us KTA RAM prices but give us rubbish RAMs.  When I finally found out and checked, I sacked him immediately and told all my known associates about his doing.  I think I've got Hyundai RAMs or well the RAMs actually had this Hyundai stickers.

I had such people.  Just cause I'm female they think I know nuts about KTA and KVA RAM.  It's a good thing I switched from Windows to Mac so they couldn't cheat me anymore!

LOL, it seems like the same/similar supplier is doing that everywhere around. I had a client whom affected too. They're being charged premium price for Value RAM.

Things about RAM is the manufacturer change the chip supplier time to time. Even the same brand that been tested to work will yield a different result because the chips are different. Apple only uses a few OEM supplier for their RAM. The best if you could get the same chip/manufacturer. Cause apple is using them also mar wink.gif

There's no need to be bothered with the extra pins. They are still SATA drive that compliance to SATA requirement.

Have you check is the drive seated well? Have you try booting into OSX DVD and see if the drive detected by Disk Utility? Did you try the EFI boot menu (hold option startup). Have you try zapping PRAM?

Your MBP is using 2.5" SATA drive.
1TB bare drive is still rare in the market now. But you might able to get it from bigger IT outlet. And MBP drive is not user installable part. - correction on post #5.

My apology, TS MBP is the unibody model and the HDD can be installed by user. It's on the manual page 38. Only the older non-unibody is not.

Added on November 5, 2009, 11:32 pmApparently OWC listed this 12.5mm drive suitable for MacBook n MacBook pro unibody: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD10TEVT/

some reported the drive can barely fit in the optical bay. Might get one to try biggrin.gif

You should get DDR3 1067MHz SODIMM. 1333MHz is also backward compatible. But your mac will only run at 1067MHz.

As of HDD, the faster the RPM, the faster the drive access and write files. In layman terms. But many cases it's matter of seconds or minutes. 7200rpm drive for laptop also come in smaller capacity at the moment. 320GB WD Black is the common one. The 500gb n 1TB drive you seek is still at 5400RPM only.

64bit drivers are hidden, you have to use command line to start the installation.

Firstly you need to describe what you want to run on it.

By looking at the spec, you have a 2003 MDD G4.
The basic things you can do to bump some performance is:
1) Update your OS to 10.4.11. And reconfigure the system at the same time.
2) Add more RAM (max 2GB if possible).

By doing so you should have performance close to first gen G5. But your system will still lack behind compared to dual core/ dual processor 2.0GHz or faster G5.

Unless you can get G5 at good deal, else it will be more cost efficient to upgrade. But still depends what you want to do on it.
