As of NAS discussion, I'm rebuilding my old Ubuntu file server, adding another 1TB into it and changing the OS from Ubuntu into FreeNAS 7. Running on Atom mobo and small PC case, it has 2 1TB HD and the OS is in USB thumbdrive. Only problem now, Lion has disable the authentication system used to access AFP/SMB on many NAS.. waiting for FreeNAS team to update their software sad.gif

Hey guys, need an opinion here. To boost up performance in terms of speed of mbp, is it better to switch to SSD or upgrade its ram to 8GB?

Basically i'm doing office work, surfing, video editing, musics, all personal, not gaming.

SSD. You'll hit the ceiling with the RAM, where increasing the amount of RAM will no longer give you any increase in performance.

You're using the 4GB ram with SSD right? I saw your siggy. Mind to share you experience? I saw the boot up of the SSD is quite FAST. As you mentioned just now, increasing the RAM won't do much on the performance, but what will it do more to?

SSD r pretty good on accessing ur data n booting up. Upgrade rams are for application which are resource hunger like ur video editing. So if ok you can go for SSD and 8gb of ram just like I do. Since ram ate dirt cheap upgrading is just a no brain.

I'm using 8GB RAM with the Vertex 3 SSD in the 2011 Mini. 12 second boot up with the SSD in it. RAM increase does nothing to help that. Read up this article on what an increase of RAM does to help on your routine. The article may be old, but the processes have not changed.

Thank you.

I bought 2 pieces of KVR today. Too bad I couldn't freaking unscrew the bottom part even with 1.4mm precision screwdriver. Guess I'll be purchasing a set of 31-in-1 kind of screw thingy tomorrow. Damn.

Yep it does. Thanks for the suggestion else I will just be going with 1.3mm flat head.

Anyway installing the RAM is pretty easy. Finished running 2 pass with memtest and everything shows OK. I think this must be my best RAM purchase. Almost on the edge of purchasing those Apple certified RAM which cost twice as much.

Yep mine was using KVR1333D3S9/4G as well. Memtest shows no problem at all as I mentioned before. My initial impression about it was not so great either as many foreigners on macrumors.com recommend Crucial. Nevertheless I still opt for KVR as it's the best bang for money smile.gif Apple certified RAM is just too expensive for the same performance as KVR.

Changed mine, absolutely easy.
So is it necessary to run through memtest after changing ram? As long as the machine recognize it and showing correct number, it should be fine, right?

Run it for 2 pass as recommended to further test the stability of your system after upgrading the RAM. For me that's a peace of mind to know that the passes run without any problem.
