QUOTE(olivur @ Sep 13 2011, 05:21 PM) the late 08 mbp could be as well. there was a ninja patch that apple did to unlock the support of 8gb of ram for it. (mbp 5,1) so i assume all mbps could support up to 8gb. Nice! So i can use my MBP till it falls apart then only get a new one!

when u put things into perspective...3GB is not a bad number back then... ok i have another question here... after checking my System Profiler for the 2009 MBP... it says under SATA...Link SPeed 3Gbps...negotiated link speed 1.5Gbps... what does that mean? Is it saying that my SATA is capable of 3Gbps but the drive is running only at 1.5Gbps? Help please? Thanks!

Not really a NAS... more like just a DAS... Pegasus is on a different league...at nearly 5k for the cheapest unit...i dun think i m going that route anytime soon... just looking for a place where i can consolidate my entire media collection...currently it's all over the place...

Guys i dunno whether this question would be related to mac section or not...but since ill be doing it on my mac...so i assume it would fit here... anyway here goes... i plan to have a centralized place for all my media needs... so was wondering... a DAS + Mac to do the sharing and networking part or a dedicated NAS is better? Which would produce better performance? Medias will be shared between a few laptops, desktops and some media players. Your help is much needed! Thanks!

QUOTE(limkj @ Sep 18 2011, 09:37 PM) In my opinion, DAS + Mac will do nicely. You can also activate sharing on iTunes for your music. Anyway, sharing a hard disk on a mac is very easy. QUOTE(stringfellow @ Sep 18 2011, 09:40 PM) I pick DAS. Assuming that your media here are in the iTunes library, you can easily Home-Sharing them around your Macs. If they aren't, a NAS may be required. I moved on from a NAS (WD ShareSpace) to a DAS(Promise Pegasus), but I'm sharing files around based on Home-Sharing in iTunes. If I do need to swap files over, AirDrop works irregardless where the files are in any of my Macs. DAS has that connected advantage, and in my case, the TB connectivity is exponentially better than even a Gigabit-Ethernet-connected NAS. My previous NAS is connected to the Time Capsule, therefore accessible wireless to any computers in the network. But the side-effect to that is it clogs up the bandwidth, especially wen dealing with webpages/activities that requires them. Since my move to the Pegasus, even simple surfing on the Mini felt faster without having to use that bandwidth to access the NAS. Thanks lim and string! very helpful indeed! now i know what to do already!

Hi guys. after reading about cheap rams... i've followed suit and bought 8GB ram for my MBP... 150 for 8gb..i say it's not bad... anyway... after installing everything went smoothly...no weird errors or anything.. but it seems my programs are all still slow... hahahahaha... is there anything i can do to make things faster? or did i have a very wrong impression that more rams can help speed up things? Help please!

QUOTE(olivur @ Sep 25 2011, 07:14 PM) xandman, could i know what programs are you referring to? and by slow do you mean while multitasking or basic load time. hahahaha. normal everyday-use programs. like safari, vlc and such. loading is faster, i think. or maybe just psychological effect. but my safari now runs more slowly. sames goes to vlc. hmmmmm....
