Just got home with it. Sitting right in front of me now. Haven't tried any games with it yet. Might install Last Remnant later and see how it runs. So far it's fine. However sheetsta is a pos. Might wipe it later and install Ubuntu or XP SP3.

Vista Rating = 4.0

CPU - 4.9
RAM - 5.1
GPU - 4.0
GPU Gaming - 4.1
HDD - 5.4

Right, day one experience with the notebook personal opinion.

It comes with Vista Home Premium. So far the Pentium DC isn't a letdown for desktop use. Although the empowering technology app stopped responding when I pressed the e button once but after ending the task and relaunching, it didn't do that anymore. Probably Vista's fault.

Vista score on top as you can see. It ships with SP1 pre-installed. The first thing I did when I powered it on was removed the junks off the machine, namely Google Desktop, some fish chat app that I forgot the name, mc afree trial anti virus etc, you get the idea.

Installed CoreAVC and tried Afro Samurai BD played with MPC and the CPU was hovering around the mid 20s without hardware acceleration.

It also comes with a 60days trial of MS Office 07. I wiped that off and installed a full version.

Checked for updates after that and it showed an estimate of 435MB~ to download (this includes Office 07 SP1)

Aesthetic wise I have a few complaints.

1.) Only has 2 USB ports which are located on the left hand side of the machine. Most people are right handed thus you have to drag your USB cable for your mice around the back of the machine if you get what I mean. I find it annoying but not really a major downside.

2.) Card reader located on the front of the machine towards the left side. Dummy card bulges out a little bit and sometimes it take quite a few tries to get it back in the slot after you pull it out. Again, not a major downside but annoying nonetheless.

Other than these two, everything is in place.

Temperature wise I can say that after 6 hours, the machine is warm but not unbearable to rest it on your lap. Thanks to the CPU mainly I guess.

I'll get to gaming performance tomorrow as now my mother is using it since it was bought for her to use not me.

i wondering if the combination of pentium dual-core + ati radeon 3470 should be a perfect match for gaming performance, especially the high demanding ones e.g. call of duty 4, call of duty 5, devil may cry 4, command & conquer red alert 3, left 4 dead, dead space, prince of persia and other kinds of games available in market. i'm also wondering if the new acer aspire 4730gz should able to handle this high demanding games in market. is anyone trying this laptop before, please comment and share, who knows i would like to bought it one soon (hey hey hey...)

Added on March 26, 2009, 3:52 pmand before i forgot, i'm also wonder if the acer aspire 4730gz is also a perfect laptop for such multi-tasking, entertainment and assignment purposes.

Today I actually brought RM2200 to Low Yat Plaza and hoping the sales personals there can convince me that 4730ZG is the laptop to buy right now. Some of those sales people didn't even know 4730ZG existed and some still pricing them at RM2399/RM2299 saying 'promo price'. I have to educate them somemore about 4730ZG. sweat.gif I have no confidence buying from those guys at all or even listen to their recommendation, they are suppose to know more about laptops than me.

Saw one sales person promoting Aspire 4530 (i think) at RM1999. AMD Turion 2.2, 3G RAM, 3 years warranty. It was listed RM2099 with 1GB and 1 year warranty. Afraid that I'll be taken a ride by those half cooked sales staff, I went home instead and do my own research.

There's a few shops that offer below the RSP of RM2199 and some throw in freebies, so I'll be heading back to Low Yat this weekend, bringing along an IT friend.

2. I don't recall that.

Last Remnant won't run well with this machine sad to say.

Medium settings all with Shadows to Low = 20fps
Low settings with Shadows turned off = 17fps.

Either the CPU is bottlenecked to hell or the infamous Ati performance on this game is that bad.

Acer logo on the lid will not light up.

Bro, do you get the frame rate correct? Low settings with shadows turned off should perform better.

Yep, this is in-battle performance. around 3 fps boost would either mean its severely CPU bottlenecked or the game really runs terribly on Ati cards.

I have a desktop with a 4850 and with shadows turned high would give 12fps in battles and shadows turned to low would give 75 fps or so. But this doesn't show on the notebook so I would lean towards the CPU bottle neck part.

Oh and it was running on native fullscreen which was 1280x800 IIRC.

That means the fps reads like this:
Medium settings all with Shadows to Low = 17fps
Low settings with Shadows turned off = 20fps.

Since the thoery now is CPU bottlenecking, do you/anyone have a software than can measure the CPU performance independent of the GPU?

You can use PC Mark Vantage, Super Pi and WPrime95 to determine the performance of the CPU.

I think it's about 2.5-3 hours as usual. Do expect that the HD3470 may draw more power than integrated graphic card.

I saw the actual unit today. Looks and feels solid. My only gripe would be the 2 USB ports on the left hand side. Only having 2 ports would mean one for mouse and one more for external hardisk. This means if I had a pendrive, GG liao sad.gif

But the 3 year warranty, original windows and 4gb ram would be the winning points.

as i remember, got the version of this acer that has HD3470 Crossfire.
not so bad, crossfire for entry notebook.

anyway i always wish to own a 6935 or 8930 like you, but ended up getting 5930 last year. the design is so sucks compared to the 6935 and 8930. no choice la, last year price difference alot and the HD screen... becomes a drawback if i get the hd.

the problem is when i email to acer, they said this model with my serial number does not come with BT....

the following is their reply to my inquiry

"Hi xxxxxx,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

From your serial number, the description is as below:

AS4730Z-421G16MN,T4200,1 *1GB,160G,6L,CM,CR,LINUX

Your computer comes originally with Linux version from our factory. The "e" button is actually known as empowering technology and that button can be used with Acer incorporated OEM windows only.

As from the description above, it shows that your notebook does not come with bluetooth device.

For more information, do feel free to contact us at 1800-88-1918.

Just got this lappy from PC3 at Low Yat plaza...
The RM2199 package comes with:-
Bag, Headset, Locker, USB hub & mouse.
If you don't need the item mentioned above then got discount Rm50.
Among the freebies only the bag and usb hub comes in handy. Just done my back up disc. Overall i am quite satisfied with the lappy only thing is the usb port, you definitely need the usb hub smile.gif

i wondering if the combination of pentium dual-core + ati radeon 3470 should be a perfect match for gaming performance, especially the high demanding ones e.g. call of duty 4, call of duty 5, devil may cry 4, command & conquer red alert 3, left 4 dead, dead space, prince of persia and other kinds of games available in market. i'm also wondering if the new acer aspire 4730gz should able to handle this high demanding games in market. is anyone trying this laptop before, please comment and share, who knows i would like to bought it one soon (hey hey hey...)

i own a different laptop with same GC which is 3470 but with a slightly better processor t5800. With around 1000x700 reso+ mid setting(depend on the game) i manage to play Assassin Creed, L4D, COD4 and DMC 4 with around 30 fps which is fully playable. I guess this acer should be able to perform almost same as mine, unless the processor bottleneck its performance.

I'm stucked at choosing this and Compaq CQ40, price is almost the same

CQ40
AMD Turion X2 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM (custom upgrade to 4GB)
ATI Radeon 3200 256MB dedicated RAM

CQ40 v2 (priced about RM300 more)
same as above except 350GB HDD, ATI 3450 512MB dedicated RAM.

The sales person all said that Turion x2 is more powerful than Pentium.

Which is a better buy? Acer or Compaq?

Sorry about it. I didn't notice the spec numbers behind the model. Well, in terms of graphic performance HD3470 pawns X4500MHD for sure. However, T6400 is a bit better than T4200. I can only find the benchmark of T6400 but not T4200 at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Proces...ist.2436.0.html. Well, you should try google.

If you are asking which one is more worth, you have to let us know your purpose of buying the laptop first. If your main usage is to play game, then the laptop u mention is not for gaming. Regardless of the how great the the T6400 to you, intel GMA wont perform well in gaming.

Yes sure why not?

and acer's quality is it really very worrying!??

Not really , depends on model. My friend never face any of this problem on 4730zg rclxms.gif Buy without worry my dear.

QUOTE(64bit @ Mar 31 2009, 10:09 PM)
I'm stucked at choosing this and Compaq CQ40, price is almost the same

CQ40
AMD Turion X2 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM (custom upgrade to 4GB)
ATI Radeon 3200 256MB dedicated RAM

CQ40 v2 (priced about RM300 more)
same as above except 350GB HDD, ATI 3450 512MB dedicated RAM.

The sales person all said that Turion x2 is more powerful than Pentium.

Which is a better buy? Acer or Compaq?
*
.... i would buy 4730zg , worth for every penny rather than a 3200. 3200 very slow , cod4 laggy.

miahahaha

Turion X2 in CQ40 is much better than Pentium Dual Core in 4730zG

ATI 3470 HD is about the same with ATI 3450 HD the only difference is ATI 3470 has higher clock...both are discrete GPU
ATI 3200 is integrated GPU....it uses memory from ur laptop RAM....

u can check the performance of CPU and GPU at notebookcheck....

what i can say is 4730zG is much better offer with 4gig RAM and 3 year warranty.... smile.gif

which shop in particular did you get it from?

oh and btw, i'm a newbie at laptops too, and a friend told me that he doesnt really trust lowyat stores because you never know how haphazardly they handle the merchandise.

how true is that?
*
The booth is just beside the escalator to the 2nd floor.
They have shops on 2nd and 4th floor.
About the handling of merchandise why would they wanna do that?
Even if it is true that's why hardwares comes with box and foams to protect them no worries bro smile.gif

If you are asking which one is more worth, you have to let us know your purpose of buying the laptop first. If your main usage is to play game, then the laptop u mention is not for gaming. Regardless of the how great the the T6400 to you, intel GMA wont perform well in gaming.
*
THANKS 4 UR REPLY. I purposely use it 4 multi-tasking, surfing net, photoshop, adobe illustration, entertainment(not so always) etc...
so is 4935-642g25 more worth??

i'm consider to buy this laptop...

i will compare between compaq CQ40 series..

But price tag RM2199 include windows,3 years warranty, 4GB ram bluetooth and bla2..
it's cheaper than i though...

is that good for picture editing, RAW converting?

hafz, are you going to use very demanding photo editing software like Photoshop CS4? I think this notebook works very well because of the dedicated graphic card and the large capacity of rams.

The freebie that I think you will get is notebook lock, usb hub, a mouse and maybe a cooler. This notebook is really cost effective. I'm not sure if it will be swept by people during the last day. tongue.gif

I compare both got their own advantages. indeed 4730zg got worthy spec & offer drool.gif , 4937G comes with LED backlight 16:9 TFT LCD better color quality & higher res. 1366 x766 drool.gif .

the latest is 4937G C2D P8400 still upgraded to 2GB DDR3 (NVidia G105M 512MB is rename from 9300GS laugh.gif )
New model 4937
Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0Ghz, 2MB, 800Mhz FSB)[/b]
Upgraded 2GB DDR3

It's not actually renamed. G105M is a combination of 2 chips. One is 9100M G (dedicated) and another is 9400M (integrated). When intensive graphic processing is needed, both of them will run in HybridSLI mode. Otherwise, it will only run on 9400M which saves energy. You guys can check it out here.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForc...5M.13790.0.html

Added on April 4, 2009, 12:24 pmCloud, my supplier told me that the spec of the 4937G available in Malaysia now is nearly the same as the 4935G except the implementation of DDR3 ram. If it has G105M, it is certainly a plus. sad.gif

Sorry for replying so late...after buying this baby that nite, the 1st game i install is NFS Carbon, can play very smoothly with 800x600 with medium setting. then i install biohazard 4(already play till the place which got a lot of lava, quite near the end already, that's the main reason i replay u so late...hehe). after that i install the sims 2 with a lot of expansion packs, can play smoothly with high setting too. But this baby can't handle NFS Pro Street very well,i nid to set all setting to low only can play it smoothly. I haven't close the laptop since i bought it back, just let it open all the times in a fixed position on my study table,so don't know how durable the housing is. Need to use cooler pad only can play games like Biohazard 4 because is quite warm after gaming for long period. conclusion, very satisfy with this laptop!

Just to let u guys know (not rubbing it in...ok), becoz i got back very late today.

Wifey came back this evening from jusco AU2 members day with a Compaq on PC fAir offer : RM 2,099 Model CQ40-324TU (freedos) come with 3 years warranty + the usual free stuff thrown in. We were looking to buy a lappie at PC Fair but this deal is way better. PC Fair offer and get jusco vouchers worth RM210.00 becoz members day; Get RM10.00 voucher for every RM100.00 spent. Free stuff she got is laptop cooler, k/b protector, usb 2.0+EDR hub, lock + optical mouse + the Acer bag which is included.

The Acer 4730-424 they selling at RM2,299 + free stuff instead of RM2,199.00 but more than off-set by the jusco voucher of RM230.00.

The thing is, if i'm not mistaken, suppliers bear like 50% of the cost of the jusco vouchers; that's about RM 110.00. If they can sell at PC Fair price + give free stuffs + THE jusco cost of RM110, maybe u guys can squeeze more free stuff when u buy at pc fair.

Guys, I just bought this lappy from PC fair. Is there a warranty card for this laptop, coz I searched the whole package and there isn't any card. I registered the warrranty online (acer.com.my) but it doesn't display the period of warranty.

You will have an International Warranty Passport and a booklet about the info of your warranty.

With International warranty, your warranty is still valid in other countries. Your ntoebook will be done in 5 working days. Make sure you keep your proof of purchase with the Passport.

If you bought it in Malaysia, local stands for Malaysian warranty. The international warranty does work in Australia.

Hall 1 or Hall 2. The dvd-r isn't anything significant. It's only a piece of empty dvd-r. I bought from that booth because I didn't want to waste time walking back and forth to compare best freebies offers. That's why if you plan to buy, I think you could haggle around more.

The simplest way is to reformat and install with XP and see if it works. If it doesn't, format again and switch to Vista. The most basic hardware (motherboard, hdd, graphic card,CPU) will work. The speculated thing that won't work can be webcam, touchpad without any other function like scrolling and other peripheral.

I rather get the RM2080 with basic freebies than RM2199/RM2160 (what I paid for) with additional freebies honestly. At least I can shop for the accessories I want.

Backlight bleeding is owning me to the max. I don't know if it just me who's unlucky or it's affected all 4730ZG units. Anyone knows if Acer service centre will rectify backlight bleeding?

One thing I didn't realise is I was given a Dark Blue colour model. I thought it comes as Black. I prefer Black to Dark Blue.

Uninstalled most of the Acer crap & trial softwares. Haven't install games yet on this laptop nor ran benchmarking tools yet.

Yes, they will try rectify the backlight bleeding for you. If they mention that it is within the specs just insist ur standing. Eventually they will giveup and replace another panel or backlight led for you. I tot that there is only one colour avail for this model ? that is the dark blue, but seems like black at some times as it is really a dark dark blue.

Go to Left4Dead > left4dead > cfg
In this cfg  folder you will see 2 text documents named video and videodefaults.
Open video.txt and change the values according to these:

"VideoConfig"
{
"setting.cpu_level"  "0"
"setting.gpu_level"  "0"
"setting.mat_antialias"  "1"
"setting.mat_aaquality"  "0"
"setting.mat_forceaniso"  "0"
"setting.mat_vsync"  "0"
"setting.mat_triplebuffered"  "0"
"setting.mat_grain_scale_override"  "0.000000"
"setting.mat_monitorgamma"  "2.200000"
"setting.gpu_mem_level"  "0"
"setting.mem_level"  "0"
"setting.mat_queue_mode"  "0"
"setting.defaultres"  "720"
"setting.defaultresheight"  "480"
"setting.aspectratiomode"  "2"
"setting.fullscreen"  "1"
"setting.nowindowborder"  "0"
}

Save the text file.

If you can't find the video file then try changing the videodefaults but make sure you back it up before doing so.

since this laptop come with preinstalled win vista it already take most of harddisk space plus
additional trial software which i hate...such mcaffe antivirus, a lot of trial games and mc office trial version..

capacity of harddisk mostly come not same with capacity they show. eg my external harddisk which 320 GB but only show
290 GB..same like thimbdrive 1 gb only show 800-900 mb

i just unistall my mcaffe and replace with kaspersky.. because i hate trial version software...

my 10 cent opinion

I uninstalled all the Acer programs except the Acer webcam and VCM. You can keep Acer GridVista too, just in case you need to connect to multiple display units. I uninstalled all the trial programs as well (antivirus, office 2007, cyberlink dvd player, etc).

Complains on this model? I'll be uploading pics of the backlight bleeding and will need the help of you guys to check if it's the same with your laptops.

Hi,
I noticed this model at my local IT store. I'm from besut, terengganu. It is offered at RM2199. The only freebies are just an optical mouse + cooler pad / usb thumbdrive.
At first, I thought of going to buy it at Kota Bharu but then after reading all posting here. It seems that, the price is just with a slight different. So, I'm not going to waste my car fuel to travel to Kota Bharu which is an hour drive from my place. Am I making the right decision?

I also wonder whether I can install Office 2003 since it is Vista. Sorry to silly question. I DON'T have experience or knowledge on Vista and because I already have Ori Office 2003. Help me here please.

I'm thinking of getting it this saturday since friday is holiday here.

Thanx in advance.

RM2199 with 2 freebies is all right if the alternatives will cost you even more. Get the cooler pad and see if the shop can throw in an USB hub for you. You'll need an USB hub for sure for this laptop.

I installed Office 2003 also, so no problems there.

Will upload pics of the 'backlight bleeding' later.

seems like I have to "ask" for the usb hub for sure.

ashburn98, since you said that you also use Office 2003, then I'll do the same.

Now, my wife also interested to this laptop and she asked to have one too. Well, tomorrow is going to be my "KOPAAAKKKK"!!!!! DAY.

I have to "TEKAN GILER-GILER" the towkay to get better price maybe. or at least to get more freebies.

anyway ashburn98, what is 'backlight bleeding' ?

This seems serious, i know Dell face such problems before on their previous XPS. Better head for service centre or if it's within 7days of purchase and ur warranty seals are not broken. You can exchange 1 to 1 from your dealer and it's an Acer policy.

They say not much profit/commission they earn from selling this model compare with the other acer model lah.

hmm thanks for the advise
I try the hubs using 1 pendrive, mouse and cooler pad and it works fine....but when i use the hubs with mouse, cooler pad and MP3 player...it will not work...hmm maybe my mp3 player automatically charge the battery and cause the hubs not enough power.haha

Ohya anyone having problem with their keyboard??my keyboard just the "E" alphabet letter when pressed will have some squeaking sound something like "ngek ngek rubber sound"...others keys is working fine.

I don't remember seeing this wavy lines on the display unit when the webcam is on. Should we complain? I use the webcam to take videos. My previous notebook Compaq don't have this problem.

Good to hear that. Vista easily cant boot even by changing it settings/registry, maybe microsoft purposely made it like tat. Warranty for software is 60days, after 60days if software problem need reload OS then Acer service centre will charge rm120 for it. So use Alt+F10 before goin to service centre icon_rolleyes.gif

They say not much profit/commission they earn from selling this model compare with the other acer model lah.
Ic. Did you bargain before he gave you the discount? You are lucky! Anybody else got this laptop from Penang PC Fair? How's the deal?

That's why I'm asking fellow owners if they encounter the same thing. If everyone is having the same thing, then I'll guess it's normal, if not, then I'll have to send it back.

Backlight bleeding is when you put a black wallpaper and the monitor displays grayish-white colours from the monitor sides. Example of bleeding from LCD:

Backlight bleeding is normal for LCD because of its technology. This LCD is a TN panel, so the 'bleeding' is just whitish. If you get those expensive LCD with more colour gamut, you might see orange or reddish bleeding!

hey guys, my friend bought this 4730zg, and I was helping him to install windows xp, but I tried 5 different XP installation discs, and all had the same problem: when it goes to "setup is starting windows", BSOD comes out and screws me. anyone encountered this problem before?

anyway, I think it's a good deal, for 2199 you get lots of stuff, namely 3470, but sadly not core 2 duo. And except for the fact that it's acer, it's rather good.

1. Vista sucks, eats too much ram (o.0 I'm a vista user)

'cos my friend uses old software, and he was scared that Vista might not be able to run '02-'03 software, and he's too used to xp, that's why. I'm trying to make a dual boot for him, but I'm stuck at the first part: BSOD on xp installation start. I don't know why, I've slipstreamed SATA drivers into the windows setup, so it couldn't be hard disk problems.

The problem is this lappy got a hidden partition around 10GB (not sure) that stores Vista image (purposely slipstreamed for this lappy). Either you make a backup copy of it first, then only redo/format the HDD for XP installation.

uh huh you mean the EISA partition that acts as a recovery partition right? I'm not formatting my hard disk as I don't want to lose my genuine copy, I remember installing XP onto my 5920g without any problems while not losing my vista partition. I don't know why.. BSOD gave a INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. Is it that XP setup is unable to read the EISA partition? (weird because if it can't i shouldn't have xp on my own 5920g)

edit: uh i changed sata mode to ide and it works

XP installer files unable to read Sata mode drive and can ony detect IDE mode instead. Same goes to all notebooks, if one wants to install XP to their notebooks that are newer generations. Try enter the bios and set the Sata mode to IDE or native IDE. Else is BSOD ocasionally even you got the XP installed sucessfully on Sata mode.

Nope if everything goes normally. It does not effect programs installed previously on vista. Since dual booting is installing Xp on another location.

You expect a RM2199 lappy to play crysis at 1280x1024 at full 8x AA? Give it a break. You should get a better model.

Additional info are always helpful but in my case, I need to know how many of 4730zg has/has not this problem. If everyone has that white patch of glow with black wallpaper then I have no course to complain. If I'm the only one out, then I have to take a day off to go to Acer service centre.

The dimmer you set the lesser whitish 'bleeding' you see
Please treat it as normal case... 'bleeding' is normal for LCD unless your LCD panel got coating (like those branded LCD TV)... even with coating, you might see the 'bleeding' in a dark room.

To ease your anxiety... let me paste part of the drawbacks in LCD technology explain in Wikipedia...

QUOTE
Although LCDs typically have more vibrant images and better "real-world" contrast ratios (the ability to maintain contrast and variation of color in bright environments) than CRTs, they do have lower contrast ratios than CRTs in terms of how deep their blacks are. A contrast ratio is the difference between a completely on (white) and off (black) pixel, and LCDs can have "backlight bleed" where light (usually seen around corners of the screen) leaks out and turns black into gray or even a bluish / purple tint with TN-film based displays. However, as of December 2007, the very best LCDs can approach the contrast ratios of plasma displays in terms of delivering a deep black.

No need to wonder, the cost of upgrading to C2D on your own is more expensive than you thought. It is not easy to source OEM C2D processor with lappy low thermal and low wattage spec.

I did a background check of the pentium dual core T4200. Interestingly, it was a Penryn processor with 1MB cache. In other words, it is a C2D with retarded cache (1MB instead of 3/4/6MB you name it) and retarded FSB (for more stable operationg and marketing segmentation purpose) . This is due to the manufacturing yield (not all chips produced on a same wafer are the same). So Intel disable the cache and downgrade the FSB via fusing off the eletrical paths and rebrand it as Pentium dual core. However, the logic units are still functioning as C2D, you have all the features. 1 more interesting fact is sometimes Intel purposely downgrade the C2D to sell at different market depending on demand! nod.gif

Bingo. I realised this before buying this laptop. I was wondering what is the difference between C2D T6400 and Pentium Dual Core T4200. And it came out to be T4200 is a stripped down version of T6400. The FSB, Processor Frequency and Penryn core are the same, except for the L2 cache and some Intel Instruction Sets which is minimal and do not justify the price difference between these 2 processors. rclxms.gif

I'll admit I didn't go reading up to these details before getting this laptop so I'll consider it as a bonus. smile.gif

One thing I did realize is the DDR2 RAM is 335Mhz @ 5.5.5.12 latency. Compared to my desktop RAM, it's feels slow.

Does changing Sata to IDE affects the read/write speed?

Nope does not effect much of it and it is not noticable. As it is actually an ide emulation of the sata controler. In layman's term is that ur bios 'tricks' ur installer to blive it is ide lol.

layman's term = more easier or simple means. Hmm if ure doing fine with your current setting then why bother to change it ? Just change it when u cant install xp or get BSOD while starting up/installing. Just leave it if nothing wrong as ur bios does not need to 'trick' ur os lol ..

Not advisable because lappy's component are tightly integrated into 1 tiny space and the thermal dissipation solution are built to dissipate certain amount of heat only. When you overclock it, you are really shortening the lifespan freaking fast. But again, why spend the money on lappy if you know you are going to overclock? Not senseful right?? rolleyes.gif

A cooling pad merely sucks out the hot air inside the laptop. It does not in any way reduce the heat emitted from the component itself. Think like this, a cooling pad only sucks away the smoke from a frying pan, it doesn't reduce the heat of the pan itself smile.gif

Haha. Come to think of it, I used the same method 10 years ago, when my AMD desktop keeps having BSOD: I left the desktop side casing opened and blast a table fan on it. Miraculously, no more BSOD icon_rolleyes.gif rclxms.gif

Acer nowadays does not provide the recovery cd anymore. Need to make urself from the Acer module. Applicable to those that comes with OS license. There should be a Resource CD for drivers and applications.

Uhh new owner of this laptop here =)
err actually 2 weeks already
Got a bit of a problem here
Is this GPU seriously screwed or something?
Because I tested COD4 with all low graphics
And it lags ==
Quite badly
Along with Crysis

And by the way, got lots of freebies for RM 2199 from PC Fair Ipoh
Earphones
Notebook lock
Light
Cooler
Keyboard protector
Notebook skin
Mouse
Ethernet cable
10 empty CDs
USB vacuum cleaner XD

But most of those stuff don't work XD
*
no matter wad ppl say about ati with dedicated rams on notebooks, plz lar you're paying 2199 for a dual core, not a core 2 duo. the difference between this ZG and the vanilla 4730z is the graphics, the ram size, the license, and the 3 years warranty. don expect dual core to run cod4 and crysis smoothly. but u should expect smooth playing on hd movies.

and oh btw, i lol at your freebies. CDs? Ethernet Cable? Vacuum? lol~! all total up to around rm50 or less...

QUOTE(ashburn98 @ Apr 19 2009, 06:09 PM)
Additional info are always helpful but in my case, I need to know how many of 4730zg has/has not this problem. If everyone has that white patch of glow with black wallpaper then I have no course to complain. If I'm the only one out, then I have to take a day off to go to Acer service centre.

this is considered normal for notebook lcds. unless you're using the new LED screen. notebook screens are all cheap tn panels, not those premium panels used on good lcds. >.<

Hi, i'm new here. And i'm looking to buy this 4730z laptop because of its low price. I'm currently using an Acer Aspire 5562 (Core Duo 1.66GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI x1400 discrete card) and wants to upgrade to a newer laptop.

So, can anyone tell me that;
1. If it is possible to buy this laptop minus windows license, coz i already have original vista license purchased separately.
2. How long is the battery life?
3. Is it hot?
4. How much improvement i will feel if i upgrade to this laptop, since i'm coming from a 1st Generation Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo!). My current laptop has 2MB cache though..

There is another Acer Laptop for RM 2,399 i think it is 4930 or so, With Core 2 duo 2.0GHz but with Intel X4500HD.

So, which one i should choose? I do light gaming (Racing etc)..

Thanks

1.The diffrent between Dual Core T4200 and Core 2 Duo T6400 is just he cache memory.T4200=1mb T6400 2mb.
Performance is just 7 or 8% diffrent.(According to the benchmark)
Dont care too much for the dual core and core 2 duo....act is the same thing..this is jsut a marketing strategy for
the intel company.
2.Dont even think about a RM 2199 laptop can give u a superior graphic,,,act it is just best graphic card build in for
laptop below RM2500..

Correct. If RM2199 can beat RM3000+ laptop in games, then it won't be RM2199 or it'd been sold out long ago. Just think this as best spec/cheap price laptop.

I don't know how Acer phase out their laptop but I can tell you there aren't any reviews on 4730ZG when I joined this thread (before buying). So maybe Acer does phase out their laptops.

Apart from my dissatisfaction with the LCD blacklight bleeding. (My desktop LCD is S-IPS panel and have some bleeding as well), it is doing well for office work. Gaming reviews you have to ask from other owners.

Ditto to the gpu performance comments. It is not powerful and plays crysis at high details with full aa. Yet it serves me well on casual gaming (counter strike) with less noticed framerate drop. Btw, anyone can tell me where can I tweak the gpu? The acer supplied ati catalyst seems only allow me to change the colour and screen width ratios sweat.gif

hey i've recently installed a software called advanced systemcare which monitors your computer system, registry and fixes them.

one thing that bugs me is that the software displayed my available ram as only 3gigs (3096mb to be exact) instead of the 4gigs of ram which showed up on the system window at the control panel.

can someone tell me wth is going on? hmm.gif

This is because Vista 32bit is only capable of handling 3gig of ram maximum. Only the 64bit can utilize all 4gig of memory. Even the specs mentioned you have 4gig of ram but Vista will use 3gig as that is the maximum limit. Try Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at the memory resource, it also uses only 3gig for ram.

I did notice that the system shows that the total physical memory is 3GB and total installed memory is 4GB. The other 1GB I thought is probably allocated to the Video Card. And after I read this: Dude, Where's my 4GB of RAM?, maybe I was wrong about the Video RAM allocation after all sad.gif

If you are on a budget btw 2k to 2.5k for an average gaming lappy,
this model I can say is the best value for money lappy at the moment. smile.gif

Likewise.

Having asked all the available laptops brands during PC fair, this model is higher on the best value for money scale right now. Apart from the specs, it tags along with a 3 year warranty and vista premium (usually you'll get vista basic).

Some Compaq models are cheaper in price but it comes with lesser spec and you'll have to install your own OS.

One of the value buy then the other on the market.

Compaq all cut off the spec and squeeze to cheap price.

so despite all the bad reviews on acer laptops u mean to say this model is the best they ever produced? if so, then i think i'll consider this model. BTW, i also saw this model, 4736Z with DDR3 RAM...any significant differences between DDR2 & DDR3 when using vista?

Some of us are saying it is the better choice for spec/price, not saying this is the best model Acer ever produced. You have to take care of your laptops, regardless of brand.

List the 4736z specs and maybe there'll be some opinions for you.

The question that you want to ask is "does the 3 years warranty cover lcd hinges?". Any owners called and asked?

Yes it covers all except for burnt mark, LCD crack and accident natured such as liquid immerse, other than that hingers//covers//boards//buttons//keyboards all are included in the 3yr warranty package.

As far as i know, Acer starting from Gemstone series does not have issues on LCd hinges while the LCD hinges problem is on the older generation Acer laptops where the silver/black type.

Hi Mr.LKM, this is an out of topic question, but please help. I understand that you use a Philips ToUcam Pro II (CCD). I just bought a Philip SPC900NC/00 from Davis, and this webcam is almost the same as yours. I just could not understand when this webcam is touted as one of the sharpest webcam from Philips, why when I used it on my Acer 4730ZG and my Windows XP desktop, the video image quality is so blurred and chunky. My cap ayam 1.3MP webcam is even better. Do you use the automatic settings or manual? If manual, could you please tell me your recommended settings? Which program did you use to take the video? Vlounge? I find it very temperamental. Thanks

Obviously, your image isn't well focus. Just turn around the lens and find the optimal position. Good luck! Vlounge is good enough. For astrophotography usage, I use k3ccd tool to take the image.

I tried to play with the settings, but still very blurred. Maybe this webcam is World Best for close shooting, but it does not serve my purpose of taking normal videos on my laptop. Dissapointed...

Bro, you have to turn the physical lens. You don't have to play with the settings to get sharp image. The problem is that your image is not well focused. The only way to fix it is to turn around the lens and find the perfect focal length. It ranges from a few centimeters to infinity. So, the webcam actually covers quite a long range but not limited to close-up.

Acer phase out models very fast ma .. around 2-3months they considered the model phase out. But to dealers they still have stock and there is grace period of a few months for dealer to sell it off. So its normal if Acer does not preview it on the ads.

*
Thanks Mr.LKM for your reply. Ya I know how to change the focus by turning the physical lens. I'm dissapointed because the image quality is just so-so compared to my cap ayam 1.3MP webcam. Moreover, the focus is ONLY equally good as my cap ayam webcam when I use the Philips SPC900NC webcam with the Vlounge software. Other webcam softwares like Cyberlink Power Director, webcammax, K3CCD and VH Multicam Studio, the quality of the image captured by Philips SPC900NC is blurred and bad and this rules out the possibilty of using the Philips SPC900NC webcam for a picture in picture video shooting with other webcams. There is no such problem with the laptop's built-in Acer Crystal Eye webcam and also my Cap Ayam 1.3MP webcam which I bought for RM50+ in 2006. I think the problem lies with the Vista Driver.

For a webcam that is touted to be the World's Best when I bought it at lelong.com for a clearance price of RM153, it is dissapointing.

Acer phase out models very fast ma .. around 2-3months they considered the model phase out. But to dealers they still have stock and there is grace period of a few months for dealer to sell it off. So its normal if Acer does not preview it on the ads.

But it always seems like the later you buy a new laptop, the better the specs will be. If anyone couldn't get this, just wait for an even better deal. My 2cents tongue.gif

Will this processor T4200 cause the bottleneck with ATI Radeon HD3470?
*
Edit: my mistaken.

According to the Window Experience Index, the CPU scores 5.0 [mistaken it at 4.0] while ATI Radeon HD3470 scored 4.0 [mistaken at 3.0]. There's also a big lag difference between 1028x768 with 800x600 resolution while playing Last Remnant. I would say the bottleneck is at ATI HD 3470. This is my observation but I'm too lazy to install benchmarking tools.

You sure the score is only 3.0? Is Last Remnant fully playable at this reso with ati 3470? BTW For those who ask whether Processor is the bottleneck to the gpu, i think they might have over-estimated the strength of ati 3470.

800x600 windowed for Last Remnant playing is no problem at all. I am playing LR on my desktop on 16*0 x 14*0 resolution windowed at max settings without lag so I can subjectively judge the lag difference. Anyways, nothing beats the results of objective benchmarking.

I went to get a USB hub today at Low Yat and asked the price for 4730ZG. You can still find RM2199 with some freebies but there's significantly lesser 4730GZ display units on the laptops booths as compared to a week before PC Fair. I think Acer is phrasing this model out.

I installed Devil May Cry 4 in this laptop, and the performance awed me (at least me). By playing the performance testing mode for Direct-X 9.0, the lappy would get 16-25fps while Direct-X 10 around 12-20fps. I'm all smiles! smile.gif

Try dropping it on concrete floors.. See the screen will crack or not.
Alot of ways the lcd can break if you are not careful. It's more fragile than you think.

There's benchmark scores for this laptop littered around this thread. Windows Experience points, for example, is on the page before this; in game FRAPS is on the first few pages. DMC4 ingame benchmarking is also in the previous few pages.

===========

If you wanted to know where best to buy this laptop, please read a few pages back. You'll see this model is now phrasing off and a forumer has posted a good deal on this current page right now.

Acer has a policy period for every model. So even if it is selling like hotcakes, they would eventually phase it out and replace it with a better spec in future. That explains why dealers keep stocking stocks on this model as they too understand how Acer works.

I bought an Acer Aspire 4736zG.
Integrated graphics card, HDMI port, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 160GB HDD.
The rest of specs the same.

1st day I bought the screen got problem.
When I attached the charger to my laptop, the backlight display failed to light up.
Happened 3 times within 5 days of purchase.
Sent to Acer service center for repair.

Now still waiting for my laptop after 1 week+.
The technician said they replaced the whole MOTHERBOARD coz the graphic output got sumthing wrong.

Luckily got 1 year warranty.
Well, we'll see how my laptop will perform after this.

Good news : New Motherboard
Bad news  : I went 1 week without my lappy and I miss her..... sad.gif

But do not get discouraged to buy Acer laptops.
As long as got warranty then you are safe.
Only thing is that it is a bit troublesome ler.....

Sorry to hear that, give them a call and ask them why it took so long ? Izzit due to no stock ?

Luckily got 1 year warranty.
Well, we'll see how my laptop will perform after this.

Good news : New Motherboard
Bad news  : I went 1 week without my lappy and I miss her..... sad.gif

But do not get discouraged to buy Acer laptops.
As long as got warranty then you are safe.
Only thing is that it is a bit troublesome ler.....

For Acer there is a 7 days 1to1 exchange period for faulty hardware.
Some resellers won't honour this though.

Acer has a policy period for every model. So even if it is selling like hotcakes, they would eventually phase it out and replace it with a better spec in future. That explains why dealers keep stocking stocks on this model as they too understand how Acer works.

so no 4730zG for me in the future cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

Err..... Mine comes with Intel GMA 4500MHD.
The lappy costed RM1699 only.
I guess GeForce 105 at that price would be overkill for Acer???

This is an entry level laptop (RM2.1K) that has better graphics, max RAM, 3 year warranty and Vista Premium over the rest in that price range, period.

If you want to find fault as an excuse to not to buy, then hold on your cash for another product another time. I needed a laptop, did my homework and bought it. Apart from the 2 USB port, I know I'm getting my money's worth.

No matter what brand you buy, you'll need some luck to avoid the lemons units. The extra 2 years warranty was the selling point to me. I can't imagine forking another RM500-800 to repair a RM2.1K laptop.

Everyone will have their own motives to buy/not to buy. If you need to use a laptop now and have entry level budget, there's not much other choices to consider (at least during the time when I bought). If you don't need a laptop or has higher budget, then just look around for other choices. It is clear to me, at least.
