well i have scrutinised the iPhone 3Gs (featured on the website and advertisements); they are not enclosed with a matte casing.

even those who has a personal grasp of the new iPhone (in the states) refuted the existence of such casing.

but believe me, i would be well chuffed (it's been a long time, since i used that word tongue.gif) if the 3GS comes with such casing.

Ok one last question... How can we have to get into the menu to get the info about the version of the baseband and firmware, without activate the phone? Cannot right? Then buying a locked IP3G have to depend on luck o ? If it is baseband 2.30.00 & firmware 2.2.1 then we can use yellowsnow, if its version is above that, gameover...
*
incorrect. you can check against the serial number (they indicate when they are being manufactured) and the part number (they demonstrate the country of origin).

these vital information are all printed outside the box, without the need of removing the relevant packaging.

yes, just like bro nokia mention it. there is a serial number telling what week and year it have been build. so far as far as i know all iphone that build last year was below 2.2.1 and it will be on 2.28.00 baseband, and around week 6 in year 2009 all iphone 3G have been pre-loaded with firmware 2.2.1 and baseband 2.30.00...and now all new iphone conform have baseband 2.30.00 and firmware 2.2.1..you can check the serial number and which digit stand for year produced and week produce..google more info on how to check it..

No prob that you are curious. You read that from macrumors.com. Do read what the forumers post. It's quite entertaining. Some even mentioned Carbon Fibre.

yo bro, any links for what you've said?
cuz during the time when apple refresh the firmware to 2.2.1, the production date on the serial number doesn't hold any water.
care to show me the way to determine the firmware on 3G iphones?

AFAIK, this method only applies to the 2G era where ie week 45 onwards if 1.1.2 firmware with 4.6 bootloader.

erk, i dont have any link, hehe sorry, it is because from my experience on unlocking iphone for my brother and his friends, my brother is KLIA cabin crew so he usually buy iphone from UK, and my experience only base around 4~6 iphone 3G that i have unlock with yellowsn0w and some of my brother friend who also ask me to upgrade firmware and unlock it.

i usually see their production number and all iphone around year 2008 will be maximum on 2.2 firmware and the baseband will below 2.28.00 and some of the phone that early january( between week 1 to week 5 of 2009) also have 2.2 firmware. And it was on valentine day ( week 06) 2009 my brother buy another 8gb 3GB iphone and its preloaded with firmware 2.2.1 baseband 2.30.00.. . he still buy 2 more( after a month, around may) and still have same firmware, i check the serial number and i saw after week 6 of 2009 ( around 14hb of february) the firmware was preloaded with 2.2.1 and as a result all 3 of my brother friend have to use turbo sim in order for them to make a call etc..

im not sure about others country locked phone but then phone i was mention is from UK and the phone my brother bought is PAYG iphone.

regarding apple refresh all firmware into 2.2.1 without see its week production or not im not sure because usually when 1 product is build up, they will be preloaded with the latest firmware and firmware 2.2.1 was publish/release end of jan so all iphone that come out from factory will be preloaded with firmware 2.2.1...( i believe only the iphone that have preloaded with firmware 2.2.1 and its week production around 2008 then i think it was refurbish unit< -- please someone if im wrong in here, please correct me)

"care to show me the way to determine the firmware on 3G iphones?"

and..urmm.. i afraid i can't answer that but from my understanding in reading serial number, digit 3 is for the year production and digit 4 and 5 is week production.

example.

Serial number: XB739XXTWXN
the 3rd digit represents the year ie 7 for 2007
the 4th & 5th represent the week ie 39 for week 39

all the rest indicate the factory, or whether it's a refurb, etc.

as for my iphone is:

85835xxxxxx where i buy my iphone last year early october( before hari raya) and i know that my iphone is new base on itt week number.

cheers
taka.

it's pretty misleading if you are just basing your assumptions on UK phones alone, that is the reason why I replied to your post in the first place.
2.2.1 was released on Jan 27, and it was quickly put on the shelves to close the gap made by yellowsnow
However, i do agree that we can safely assume that after week six, all phones are preloaded with 2.2.1 since the phones are all refreshed quickly due to the yellowsn0w exploit.

I think I know Apple's strategy on the iPhone 3GS, it's for the competition with Palm Pre. To be honest, Palm Pre's Web OS in the device is stunning and better than the iPhone OS.

All of the new features in 3GS could be on the first generation iPhone long ago, but why Apple didn't? They're afraid of competitions and when competitions do come, they will boast off the features that competitors are having up their sleeves slightly better. Don't get me wrong, I use i3G.

Just watched the keynote again, and .........something just crossed my mind.

........June 26th, iPhone 3GS launch, Netherlands. .......I'll be in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 26th till 29th....... Put 2 and 2 together......shocking.gif

I personally CAN BE AT A LAUNCH COUNTRY on LAUNCH DATE! Now, to dig up to see if the Netherlands phone locking policy is the same as the rest of Europe.

So I'm cautiously optimistic, otherwise it is just a few more days to July for the Malaysian launch. My stance would still be the preferences towards NOT BEING PEGGED FOR A CONTRACT, so if I can avoid it, I would. But the Euro rising up unfavourably against RM, I'll keep my options open. But knowing myself, I may just cave in when I see the device in person. tongue.gif

Now there's more reason to go to Amsterdam, other than Casa Rosso Sex Theatre and the hash-laden coffee shops! laugh.gif

Yes! And its pretty exciting. Also Anand has mention that the PowerVR SGX is most likely clocked at 100MHz (iPhone 3G's PowerVR MBX-Lite is only 60MHz). Looks like the new hardware is so much speedier. Guess there'll be more games specialized for iPhone 3G[S] and hidden from iPhone 3G. Sounds like a worthy upgrade if speed is what we want.
