Mini Introduction

Announced at Nokia's Remix event in London, at the beginning of October 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a mid-range, music focused phone, running S60 5th
Edition on Symbian OS 9.4, with a 3.2 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, WiFi and HSDPA connectivity, and a 3.2 inch touch screen. It's the last item on this feature list
which draws attention to what would otherwise be a fairly standard mid range phone. For the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of Nokia's most widely talked about (and
leaked) phones of recent memory. There's no doubt that it is going to garner attention, coming in the wake of the recent spate of touch phones, including, of course, the
Apple iPhone. While it's not Nokia's first touch phone (Nokia 7700/7110) or its first recent touch device (Nokia N810), it is the first S60 touch enabled phone and is a
significant landmark in Nokia's mobile device story. However, it is worth noting from the start that it is not "Nokia's touch phone", instead it is the first in a portfolio of
touch enabled phones from Nokia. This is an important distinction because, while the 5800 can tell us much about Nokia's touch platform generally, it can only be fairly
assessed in the context of its own market positioning (music focused, cost of 279 Euro before taxes and subsidies). (Continue More in REVIEWS)

5) KNOWN PROBLEMS & SOLUTION FOR YOUR TUBE

DIY FIX: Speaker volume problem.

(Do it at your own risk. If you can't handle it, send it back to Nokia Care Centre and let the professionals do it for you)

=====================================================

Articles & Photos courtesy of Snake from mynokia.su & our LYN forumer jye'n.

Before you start, there's a suggestion by the Snake.

**Attention! All the action is desirable to carry out in the bathroom, because there is no dust because of the humidity.

1) Use the plectrum, open the top cover/lid starting from the camera button.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

You should remove only the plastic 'frame' which locks the screen to the phone's body. It is detachable on its own (no screen, no metal parts).

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Oh hey, you look lost!!!
No worries, here's a Youtube LIVE demo about the DIY steps!!

2) This is how it looks like when the earpiece is in place:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Next, use a flat-head ('-' type precision tool or any small screw driver.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

3) Removing the earpiece will reveal the two contact points on the mainboard for the earpiece.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

4) Here's the default appearance of the earpiece (bottom):

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

To make sure the pins can touch the contact points (highlighted above) properly, I bended the earpiece pins 'upwards'. (Be very careful here not to break the pins. You may want to hold points A and B while bending.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Now, you're done with bending. Next, put back the earpiece. Here's the tricky part, as you may have forgotten which is the correct position to put in. No worry, the part is keyed, meaning, it can only go in one way. Try the other way if the 1st trial fails. DO NOT force it in, it should go in smoothly.

5) Put back the the cover and the plastic 'frame'. Now you're done
and can forget about the earpiece problem forever smile.gif

juz updated V20

didnt "clear" up all my data at all

very nice.....

1. secondary (front) camera now enabled - record video too (but only 1.22 minutes or without audio record at 1.47 minutes)

2. faster - rotation, but didnt notice any change of speed for my gallery

3. music bass lots better, at setting, no more bass boost, but loudness

4. dictionary very good!!! multi languages support. (but once u updated the phones, need to uninstall one application, then only can see the dictionary. if u put shortcut at the "handy shell", surely ur handy shell will jump out to the menu instead of run smoothly).

5. Searching improved (support in phone searching)! SMART!

Remove battery and memory card and then start phone after reinserting battery. Where did you save your theme? Card or phone. Last time this happened to me lucky I saved it on card, then when I restart, I immediately when to uninstall the theme. Try and see if it works.

Yeah, I also support the new v20 firmware, just installed and it seems the response is slightly better and the auto rotation seems smoother. Also photos load up in the gallery very much faster. However, I seem to have less RAM available then with the previous firmware after a reboot, now I'm seeing 45MB++ free when I could get 50MB or more free previously.

then i think u need to try using the NSU to update ur firmware. If still can not, then just go to any NCC to update it !! FREE if ori wub.gif

fast way to check for ori, just make sure ur phone is comes with zitron/avaxx/sapura sticker after you open the tube back cover. But if you purchase from a nokia store, it should be ori.

Yes the tube is Wifi enabled, why don't you connect the phone via USB to your PC and perform the update through PC? Saves phone power as you don't need an active wifi connection to be on.

i had that problem ...at first was updating using the pc...den i actually disconnected the phone halfway while its updating coz nothing was updated...updates all downloaded and all it stays stuck at 15% when installing....den i ran the FOTA..it came back with the no updates..so i reconnected it to the pc and this time the updates that was downloaded earlier started to install...i suggest u to use the PC suite method smile.gif

yeah, thats true. But i have never done FOTA before, so wanna experience it and btw the update is much smaller compared to the NSU version = faster completion = less down time on the tube smile.gif

current firmware v11.0.008, custom version 11.0.008.red.01

Didn't know about problems updating via PC, it works fine for me. Thing is don't be put off by all the horror stories, as long as you have backed up your phone, then you're quite safe should something go wrong. So far I have used 2 symbian phones, the N70 ages ago and the Tube, and both updated via PC just fine.

i rather use the pc suite method coz it's a major firmware update...also i still feel much at ease using the pc suite method instead...god knows what may go wrong using FOTA as it's a relatively new method

Speaking from experience? Maybe you can tell us about the potential cons of using wireless to update, I can think of only 2:

1. Wireless suddenly disconnects
2. Transfer rates are slower

Anything else? hmm.gif

then i think u need to try using the NSU to update ur firmware. If still can not, then just go to any NCC to update it !! FREE if ori  wub.gif

fast way to check for ori, just make sure ur phone is comes with zitron/avaxx/sapura sticker after you open the tube back cover. But if you purchase from a nokia store, it should be ori.
*
Well, will have to wait till evening till i get back home to update my tube over NSU then.. dont have my USB cable now..

my set does have those zitron stickers but still cannot understand why FOTA is working for some and not for others even when all are ori sets..

Minor correction, Nokia 5800 cannot be charged via USB cable but you can purchase a USB charger that can charge the phone, one end is the power connector, the other a USB connector. Not true USB charging though.

Just updated to v20 using cable (hehehe..... luckily I always carry my cable with me in the laptop bag). No problems at all. I did not even have to restore my settings. Everything was where it was supposed to be including my contacts, sms and songs..... rclxms.gif

Very happy as this is the first time I'm updating my phone firmware myself......

Please enlighten me, this is the first time I heard about it. So, the usb connector will be connected to pc and the power connector to 5800? So far I only heard about, normal changer, USB(pc)-->USB(phone) and power-->USB(phone). As far I know, only the normal charger can be use. But USB(PC)-->power(phone) is something new for me. Should find this charger as it will be more convenience than a normal chager.

i read about the same problem at other problem too

the solution :

1. re-flash your firmware again
2. Press and hold number "1" for few seconds, then then 1 will appear, continue with 2345

one more things that i found out

if your current firmware is v10, you cant use FOTA to update to v20 , can use NSU only

What's your problem? Your NSU doesn't display any update? From my experience, AP set should not has any problem to update. Check your version. Some update only available for certain region such as APAC or Europe.

actually you can try this option instead of soft reset your phone

只要在手机设置里的语言中,改成自动,重启机子后,再改回中文,搜索功能就可以用了,
set your phone language to auto, reboot phone, set back the language u desire icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, they do sell that cable, Nokia has original cable but I think it's quite pricey, can get "compatible" one in LY.

You can check the cable out here: http://www.nokia.com.my/A41047270

This problem was for firmware v10, it was fixed in v11 if I remember correctly. Check your firmware and update it to the latest v20 firmware.

I don't think you can use Google maps offline. You can however plot your route first when you have a connection and get the directions. As for GPS software - all are non FOC, you have to buy them. Google a little for more information. FYI Garmin XT GPS software can be used together with Virtual Key. Instructions can be found on the 1st page of this thread or if not on the 1st page of the earlier versions of this thread.

you know when u type on alpha pad without t9 ?? to get 2 you have to press it 4 times, all number is like that except 1 (press 1 time only), 7 (press 5 times) and 9 (press 5 times)

apparently the problem is v20 changes the unlock pad from numeric to alphanumeric ...

Anyone having trouble restoring message after updated the firmware? I've updated from V11 to V20 last night. Before upgrading, I've done the backup. But when to restore the message from my memory card, it shows 0 items, meaning no inbox/outbox/sent items etc. I checked the file size of the backup, it's not empty.

yeah i knew, but the problem is, his phone keep forever charging (iinm from what he posted la), so if he really need to update, he can try update already (although cannot full 100% charge but if already more than 60-70% ok already - i also perform the FW update less 1 bar than fully charge)

Hmmm...I have a weird problem, when I go to my contacts I get all my contacts shown in duplicate, I tried deleting one of the "duplicate" but lo and behold both contacts were deleted! So the phone is displaying duplicates of a single contact. Dunno if I can restore just the contacts from backup. This happened after v20 update.

Did a restore, now everything seems fine. smile.gif

I'm also want to know how to disable virtual d-pad in flash game?

For other application which you can see in application manager--> Installed Apps.(for blue icon only), you click option and select Suite Setting and off "on-Screen keyboard".

I also updated to v20 via phone update (15.4Mb). My problem slightly different. My sim password no problem. Then suddenly another 'code' requested, with keypad 1 darkened (cannot press).. but after inserting ANY code, it says code unaccepted/wrong (cant remmber exactly) but phone can use as normal. Also experienced a horizontal red line reset which required battery to be removed. After restart, that FUNNY code request again..

BUGS IN V20 FIRMWARE (for me):

1) Funny code request (which has no function)
2) horizontal reset still present- so far once (I had 1 episode in v11)
3) fullscreen qwerty keyboard in Web app acting strange; cannot go back/edit previously typed stuff- must use backspace. Also the 'forward'/'backward' triangles not functioning. So far only in Web App. SMS all ok. Dunno about other apps yet.
4) My Garmin caused a reset once... hopefully only once..

Anymore to add? All above never happened in v11 except horizontal reset..

My battery can fully charge after update...

My comment for V20

1) Never happen to me
2) No lines only sometimes the screen go blank and i need to lock and unlock to get back to phone
3) No problem because i use opera mini
4) Garmin no problem only it takes forever to lock even with a-gps

My battery also reach full charge in less than an hour

Mine started behaving like that since yesterday. So I suggest you wait a little longer. If the prob still persists, I suggest that you should go to an NCC to be on the safe side. Don't worry though, I don't think it's a hardware failure. smile.gif

Hehe, I dunno. I think I can't do a fair comparison since I change my EQ settings to my liking, I also did a hard reset after the update so I set it up again. However, bass(I dunno if this is the placebo efect after reading that comment) seems to be a bit clearer and thumpier. I used my own EQ settings with "loudness" on.

Try clicking on the most right, it'll automatically slide to the left to reveal the next line up of options.

Lol... Just came back from NCC... The Lock Code thing got me real bad yesterday... Funnay thing was, even after the reflash, it seems that my mSD card ALSO got locked somehow (I never DID set my mSD lock code either)... sweat.gif

So much for backups made on the mSD... I was half in luck bcause I did backup ONCE from PCSuite, that halved my work somewhat... hmm.gif

Now to reinstall EVERYTHING I've ever installed in my mSD, and some newer proggies I was trying out yesterday... sweat.gif

Wonder what that thing was, anyhows, the funnay code thingy? I appreciate the LOOOOOOOOOOOONG list of updates on V20 Nokia, but why the hassle of the code lock issue?

You could've just said in the update file = please do a soft settings reset after installing this update (and do not even think about REBOOTING - which I did and look where it got me)... sweat.gif

Me and doomx experience random colour changes to the display after the update. Happened to me in V11 but with V20 it happened for a longer time and at a more frequent frequency and also the colour lasts longer. Seems to be settling now though.

Still got. I turned by phone off and on again and after entering my sim password phone was ok. Then when in SMS, the requested the code again- yes it was in alphanumeric. Question is- for what app/phone/sim? I entered my sim code, said code error, but phone working like normal...

I think I found the cause for FUNNY CODE... most likelly totalrecall. I set to autostart and password protected it.. when I turned autostart off, turning phone off and on again- no more funny code request! I guess the code might have been for totalrecall!

Those having this code error, u have totalrecall installed?

Memory buying Guide: Speed Class

SDHC cards have SD Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association. “These new speeds are available in a new specification defining the minimum data transfer speeds for both SD/SDHC memory cards and SD/SDHC host products. This enhancement is easily recognized by three levels of Speed Class, class 2, 4 and 6. Speed Class 2 guarantees a MINIMUM transfer speed of 2 mega bytes per second (MB/s), Speed Class 4 guarantees a minimum transfer speed of 4 MB/s and Speed Class 6 guarantees a minimum transfer speed of 6 MB/s.”

It’s very important to notice that the speed class rating specifies a minimum transfer speed. So instead of showing the typical maximum, which in many cases is never reached, this system shows a guaranteed minimum. In many cases the system will easily surpass this minimum, with a transfer speed that’s much higher. A good example of this is this benchmark test done here with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. I used a class 2 16GB microSDHC card, which guarantees a minimum transfer speed of 4 MB/s, but in reality what we got was actually almost twice that at 7.4 Mb/s. Using a card reader we could even see a dramatically higher transfer speed of 19.7 MB/s!

I’ve also been seeing some people who got a “class 2” 16 GB card and wanted to exchange it for the class 4 model, claiming that the class 2 card was “slower and that it would “slow things down.” This is definitely not true. Checking with the same test here, even a class 2 card is enough for even the fastest of Nseries devices; the N96 and 5800 XpressMusic. A card reader is our was able to squeeze 19.7 MB/s out of a class, which certainly more than any Nseries currently on the market, including the N96 and 5800 XpressMusic. Below you can see how much juice we were able to squeeze out of “mere” class 2 card:

A golden rule applies when buying memory cards for your Nseries device: cheaper class 2 memory cards are more than enough for current Nseries device, even the newer devices with enhanced transfer speeds. Things might change quickly though with future devices…

For the duplicate contact after update of new firmware, you can solve it easily. Just go to your contact list -> option -> setting -> contacts to display -> tick sim memory then untick phone memory -> back -> option -> setting -> contacts to display -> tick phone memory and untick sim memory -> back then you are done, the contact list back like normal.

Just finish applying invisible shield after 2 hours of struggling. The end result is not what I expect. Lots of dust although because I was wrongly use bad quality tissues although it claim dust-free tissues. cry.gif

For any new owner, my advice:

1. Beware of dust, work in dust-free environment.
2. Apply back cover first to get some practice.
3. Use glove if possible.

Now my 5800 look ugly with all the trapped dust and bubble. cry.gif cry.gif

But the touchscreen responsiveness still the same and I like the rubber feel. thumbup.gif

i gave it 4/5..
it's true that it's not bulky but if u oso put ur standard package earphone in the earphone compartment it get's bulky..
i don noe weither the earphone is just to long or the compartment juz not fit..

it is effective in removing print but not to clearly wipe it..
u will see a not so visible print left on the SP if u use one.

but i saw the pouch pics with iPhone n it's earphone, it seems nicely fit sweat.gif

*#7780# would solve dict problem after updating the software smile.gif

btw just for info. tube and n82 got UDP

Wiki UDP

User Data Preservation (UDP) lets users upgrade their firmware without losing data (such as contacts, settings or installed applications). Previously you had to backup your phone and restore it after the firmware update happened.

The backup is still advisable, but you can save the long process of restoring your data, personalizing your device again (as the backup does not store everything) and reinstalling your 3rd party applications (as most of them break during the backup-restore process).

sigh so my phone got problem? or garmin got problem bloody hell it takes like 10 mins to lock with a-gps

1) What version of garmin are you using?
2) When garmin running is your tube in landscape view or potrait?
3) What the weather like when it took 2-5 sec to lock?
4) When a-gps enabled did it deduct your credit?
5) Are you on UTMS mode or GSM mode?

Thanks hope you can answer my question so i can narrow down the possibility why my garmin takes forever to lock

Just as long as you delete Cardrunner.rsc/dll from the memory card and kill TSRAutostart.exe every time you exit Garmin, it should be okay... biggrin.gif

But yeah, I get GPS lock in 5 mins, 2-3 mins with AGPS... 10 mins seems heck long... sweat.gif

Anyone else has this problem beside me and leongtat? Will try to use PC Suite to restore later on.

1) Garmin v5.00.20
2) Portrait. I don't think this affects the time to lock.
3) Clear day. Last time i tried, without AGPS on, it was able to lock in a minute in raining day (Not moving).
4) Yes. A few KB used. But deducted RM0.10.
5) Dual mode.

I guess this has something to do with the mobile operator. Anyway, I'm using Digi.

I guess ive narrow down the possibilities.
I dont think it have anything to do with your provider.

I try updating my garmin to version 5.00.20
I am using version 5.00

Sometimes in potrait or landscape does effect because we do not know where is the GPS module or hardware store in the phone.

Example n95 its store at the keypad area thats why its GPS is weak. Lets nokia 5800 GPS module is at the earpiece then to get better lock the phone should be in potrait mode what if its near the simcard part? Then Landscape would be a better option to remove any interference

Guys, once we get a lock on our position, will we be still paying for data transfer? Or are we charged only up to the point where we get a lock?

I'm still using Nokia Maps. laugh.gif But with A-GPS it locks within seconds. It can even lock when I'm in an underground level.

hey..i have a prob after v20.

my phonebook can't seem to show SIM numbers alone no matter what i tried. Somehow, if i select SIM numbers as my contact, it'll auto overwrite my settings to 'several memory' after you reenter the phone book settings.

however, selecting phone memory as the phone book alone will not show SIM card (this is okay).

thanks rclxms.gif I had to do *#7370# to fix that bug.

I remember it didn't happen after I update to V20, only after I backuped my contacts from memory card through the backup menu. After that, even a soft reset won't fix! So......don't do backup guys tongue.gif Let the phone run clean

Those having this code error, u have totalrecall installed?

That's one thing, none of the codes above (or any other codes I searched in other forums) match the japanese area code.

The other thing is I'm afraid that changing the product code will void my warranty, will it?

if u send it in NCC with the japanese code YES it will void. So if u can flash it back to the original code it should be fine

mind to share how you check codes "match the japanese area code"

void ur warranty? hiah first..save ur original product codes. if anything goes wrong then you can change the codes again with original code.

try this solution.
download combofix and run it, NSU might corrupt by virus so combofix will settle for you.
download ccleaner ( crap cleaner - this software will remove all junk files from you computer, and dont forget to clean the registry too using same tools )
reinstall the NSU using right click setup NSU icon and run as administrator
run NSU using right click and run as administrator.

hope this solve ur problem

and may i know where u buy it? maxis plan or cash? maybe your product code not allowed you to update.

try this solution.
download combofix and run it, NSU might corrupt by virus so combofix will settle for you.
download ccleaner ( crap cleaner - this software will remove all junk files from you computer, and dont forget to clean the registry too using same tools )
reinstall the NSU using right click setup NSU icon and run as administrator
run NSU using right click and run as administrator.

hope this solve ur problem

and may i know where u buy it? maxis plan or cash? maybe your product code not allowed you to update.
*
I buy brought lowyat net user, how to check wheter my products code wheter allow me to update or not?

Data on mem card shouldn't be lost. In fact data on phone shouldn't be lost either.
But to be on the safe side, back up your data, the ones on phone being the priority.

Can't really try them out. I was exposed with Shures a lot more so from that, that's why I chose a Shure for now. Too bad, no Hi-Fi brands can be found anywhere here in KK. I am positive I have looked everywhere. sad.gif This decision on Shure is purely by gut feelings and trust.

I would like to try a Crossroad, great sound for the price from what I've read everywhere. But I decide to risk a bit and get a slightly more expensive one for now. Since I have a job I think I'll start a collection of earphones. laugh.gif 1 more every month.

If you can, I think logically the option to organize would be under options, when you are in your gallery.
The gallery is set to be arranged according to date I think.

Yes. Good ones supposed to produce that sense of space at least.

BTW, don't you think it's weird that we still don't have the option to mark several?

okay. review time for the equaliser i tweaked as requested by aspire2006. i posted my settings earlier on but here it is again for reference. Loudness and Widening are set to Off. im using Sennheiser's HD473. it already has pretty good bass on its own so the you may need to tweak that far left slider a bit to suit your earphones/headphones. i noticed that the default settings for the equaliser has this sort of laptop speaker-ish kinda sound, hence the tweaking for better sound (i hope these settings help).

below are the list of songs i played during the past hour. those with the * needs a bit of tweaking to the far left slider (move it down a bit). the settings works well with pop & eurodance songs. those heavier on the rock side got a bit too much bass pulak. same with the orchestral scores. so there you go. i think i've covered quite a number of genres here except for hip hop/rap songs --> i dont listen to em lol.

What's Up - 4 Non Blondes
Move Along - The All-American Rejects*
Love Story - Taylor Swift
Skater Boi - Avril Lavigne*
Driving With The Top Down - Iron Man OST* (orchestral score)
Once Upon A Time In Africa - Madagascar 2 OST* (orchestral score)
Lollipop - Mika*
Love Today - Mika*
Womanizer - Britney Spears
Witchdoctor - Cartoons (eurodance)
I Like To Move It - Crazy Frog (eurodance)
Next Plane Home - Daniel Powter
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
Your Song - Elton John
The Pretender - Foo Fighters*
My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson*
Hot N Cold - Katy Perry*
Wild Child - Enya* (new age)
In Love With A Girl - Gaven Degraw

Yeah, I tried to bluetooth pics as well this morning. Only about 6 but it was quite tedious.
Nokia was able to put such minor things like new icons, and major ones such as geo tagging and smoother operation in the FW update, but forgot to include the option to mark several? laugh.gif

well i found out one thing bout the picture marking.

this is what i did, go mark one of the picture first then on the next picture u wanna mark just double tap on the picture and it will bring up the option for you to choose mark.

i guess it's still the same method as tapping options and mark. Nokia gotta make change on this part for the next formware. marking 1 by 1 is a very tedious work.

well i found out one thing bout the picture marking.

this is what i did, go mark one of the picture first then on the next picture u wanna mark just double tap on the picture and it will bring up the option for you to choose mark.

i guess it's still the same method as tapping options and mark. Nokia gotta make change on this part for the next formware. marking 1 by 1 is a very tedious work.
*
Good find.
But double tapping on 10 pics surely can be a bit tiring as well.

What i hate about firmware v20 :

- When typing a msg, usually its just a blank space at the text area now there's "message : "

- During phone start up, the " * " button on my alphanumeric pad is missing, only display white blank box

- video playback seems to be poorer than the previous firmware.. i dunno about u guys, but i can see the slight differences, the video rendering is not as smooth as the v11 firmware...

Other than that, i love the new firmware.. Especially the media bar.. It turns grey when u use other themes.. coolness.. Can anybody please tell me where can i get a good silicon case for my tube?

I find the video is over exposed especially if there's a bright white scene or coloor in the video.. I can see it clearly in Britney's Womanizer video, the office scene is totally messed up..

But for a huge jump from v10-20, downgrade in video quality seems like a no-no. We'll see how things go....

Video playback quality is bitrate depandable.. maybe i see a major video playback downgrade bcuz i used average settings for my video

ex : 16:9 video resolution - 480x272
bitrate : 1200
frame : 30 frames

Maybe if u use a bigger bitrate, u might get different results.. But it is recommended to upgrade to a new firmware to ensure ur phone stablity..

As for me ucweb is the best browser, can download more files at once, even can stop and resume the download.
