... do another Mission Impossible!

When you look at all of the long-running action franchises, they all have a common trend in that they’re variations of their originals. All except for the Mission Impossible franchise. Say what you want about the films, but they’re completely different from one another and aside from Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames, they have virtually nothing in common. I thought this would be the key that would keep the franchise going, but with the dissolution of the Tom Cruise-Paramount relationship, and the fact  it’s been over six months since we heard they were in talks, I’m afraid we might not see another MI movie in the near future. TC and Paramount need to put their differences aside and get this series going again because it will benefit both of them in the long run.

It would be a shame for the MI franchise to die because you know TC has plenty of ideas up his sleeve. I’m an unabashed Tom Cruise fan, but one of the things I love about the guy is his willingness/eagerness to work with so many different directors. I’d love to see where he wants to take the MI franchise next and what director he could get to take it there. When it was said that David Fincher was going to direct M:I3, I was elated. Can you imagine the possibilities with TC and Fincher teaming up for a Mission Impossible film? I would love for them to revisit some of their ideas and maybe team up for M:I4.

the only MI i really liked was 1.
2 was too "Bond-ish" (sleep with the heroine)
and 3 tried to be "24" but was too predictable,IMO.

Mission: Impossible IV Targeted for 2011

News broke last week that Star Trek helmer J.J. Abrams is going to produce Mission: Impossible IV after directing the third installment.

Now, Variety adds that Paramount Pictures is targeting a 2011 release for the sequel.

The trade adds that work on Mission: Impossible IV would inevitably be delayed by the busy schedules of the participants.

Abrams will be responsible for guiding the Star Trek sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled film (formerly called Wichita) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

Mission: Impossible IV Screenwriters Set

Paramount Pictures and producers Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have set Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to write the screenplay for Mission: Impossible IV, reports Variety.

Applebaum and Nemec spent four seasons with Abrams as co-executive producers of "Alias," and they will script "M:i:IV" based on a story Abrams wrote with them.

"I've been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years," Abrams said. "Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom as well. We're off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed."

The film is targeted for a 2011 release.

It's A Deal: Tom Cruise In 'MI4' For Paramount

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures today will clinch has clinched its deal with Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. Cruise will produce the film with J.J. Abrams. They are looking for a director, but screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are already attached to write the script. The intention is to make this Cruise's next film and start shooting by summer for a Memorial Day 2011 weekend release. And I can definitively say that, despite chatter to the contrary, IM4 will be very much of an Ethan Hunt pic with Cruise as the main character. Gee, remember the bad old days when Cruise and Paramount parent company Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone were on the outs? Guess that old Hollywood saying is as true as ever: "I'll never work with him again -- until I need him." I hear Paramount is really excited about relaunching the franchise, which has grossed over $1.4 billion globally. “Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey. I'm told the MI4 deal has been restructured (i.e. brought down to earth) to make it more like recent Industry tentpole deals where everyone shares the risk. MI4 is being co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions. Cruise just completed the film Knight and Day for 20th Century Fox with a July 2nd release date. It has James Mangold directing and Cameron Diaz co-starring.

nope, J.J. Abrams is not directing MI4. so that means their still looking for a director. question is, who ?

Releasing it around xmas is a bit weird as its more suitable for the summer but I guess we can wait for a few months.
I think less people will be looking forward to this since there are other bigger blockbusters.. Spiderman 4, Thor, Pirates of the Carribean 4, Transformers 3, Captain America, etc..

It’s been rumored for a while now, so it probably comes as no surprise that Bird has officially nabbed the gig. Or at least, that’s according to Tom Cruise  himself, and he would know, being the star and producer and basically the franchise of, well, the “Mission Impossible” movie franchise and all. Cruise told Empire that besides Brad Bird, who would be making his live-action feature film debut on “Mission Impossible 4″, Edgar Wright was also in contention, but eventually Bird won out, and that “everything’s signed… Brad is doing it.”

So there you have it. It does seem like one hell of a way to make your debut, since live-action is another world entirely from animation, which Bird has been doing since 1999’s “The Iron Giant”. He followed that up with the incredible “The Incredibles” in 2004, and “Ratatouille” in 2007.

J.J. Abrams, who wrote and directed part three, will return to produce the fourth entry along with Cruise. Paramount, who has yet to officially announce Bird as director, has the movie penned in for Summer 2011, which is looking like one hell of a busy summer for moviegoers who love things that go BOOM.

Looks like J.J. Abrams just produce and Brad Bird will be the director. smile.gif

Simon Pegg in Talks to Return to Mission Impossible 4

I guess the rumors were true: “Mission Impossible 4″ really is chugging towards a greenlight at Paramount, despite Tom Cruise’s recent box office  difficulties (ala “Knight and Day’s” failure to get notice). News  has it that Simon Pegg, who co-starred with Cruise in “Mission Impossible 3″, is in talks with the studio to reprise his role of IMF tech geek Benji Dunn.

“Mission Impossible 4″ will of course return Tom Cruise as IMF superspy Ethan Hunt, with part three’s writer/director J.J. Abrams producing. Directing duty on part four will be by Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”), who has been attached to the sequel for seemingly forever.

If all goes well, “Mission Impossible 4″ will be accepting a brand new mission sometime in September of this year.

Boohoo. Tom Cruise Will Make a Few Millions Less on MI: 4. Sniff.

In Hollywood, you know you’re big time when people are willing to pay you up front just to be able to go around town saying they have a movie starring you, even if the film doesn’t end up happening. That used to be Tom Cruise’s life. Not so much anymore. Despite the fact that “Knight and Day” was pretty darn good (at least I liked it, and really, isn’t that all that matters?), the Cruister’s career is not looking so rosy nowadays, and he needs a big hit (or at least, a hit of any kind) pretty bad. Which may explain why Cruise has agreed to take “a substantially reduced upfront payment” for his role in the upcoming “Mission: Impossible 4″ to ensure that the film gets made.

Of course, Tom Cruise’s “reduced” paycheck will still be more than what most people in the world will earn in a lifetime, but in the micro universe of jet-setting Hollywood movie stars and $1,000/day coke habits, that’s like getting slapped in the face in the town square for all to see. It’s not like we’re talking about a movie star foregoing his big time paycheck to do a small indie film here, after all. This is “MI4″, a film with big explosions and save the world scenarios.

The fact is, Cruise needs “MI4″ more than “MI4″ needs him at the moment, and the studio knows that, which may explain the pay cut for Cruise. But don’t cry a river for Tom. The actor still has plenty of back-end deals in place that should the film prove profitable (which is highly likely, given the franchise’s staying power over the years), he will still be smiling that big smile at the end of the day.

The good news, though, is that more seemingly impossible missions are coming our way. The bad news? Well, there aren’t any, really. So Tommy loses a million here and there, the guy is still ridiculously well paid, so I suggest no one lose sleep over it.

Tom Cruise is 1 overated Actor in this lifetime.

And he Made Mission Impossible to Cruise Impossible doh.gif

I think the old Mission impossible series is way better then his Impossible movies. If he's underpaid, its Damn right coz he acting aint even worth a million to me. Its not that I hate Tom, he just's too overated in terms of acting.....in his 90s he's just a box office hits base on his looks then acting.

A Trio of Actors Testing to be Tom Cruise’s Partner in MI4

“Mission Impossible 4″ will be a hit even if Tom Cruise isn’t in it, but it’ll be a bigger hit if Cruise is in it. Let’s face it, the franchise is Cruise, and Cruise is the franchise.

So with Cruise on board (albeit with the now-famous pay cut), the studio needs to find some young blood to surround him. After all, old man Cruise can’t be running and jumping and saving the world all by his little lonesome in his advance years, can he? What is he now, 80? Or thereabouts.

Deadline has a trio of young actors currently testing this week for the privilege of playing Tom Cruise’s young help, including Keven Zegers, Christopher Egan, and “The Hurt Locker’s” Anthony Mackie.

Of the three, Zegers looks like a younger version of Tom Cruise (see pic below for a comparison; maybe they can write in Ethan Hunt’s little brother?), though I would prefer Mackie, if only to splash some color on the set. Then again, they already have Ving Rhames, who is scheduled to reprise is role as Ethan Hunt’s sidekick, and maybe that’s enough to meet the film’s minority quota. (Hollywood
: they talk a good game, but usually it’s all white faces in the bunch.)

The plan for “Mission Impossible 4″, with Brad Bird directing, is to have Hunt once again saving the world, but this time with a cadre of younger MI:F agents lending a hand.

Jeremy Renner Accepts Mission Impossible 4, Tom Cruise’s Possible Replacement?

user posted image

A younger, hipper partner for Tom Cruise? Forget about it. Jeremy Renner has reportedly  gotten the gig of playing Ethan Hunt’s partner in Paramount’s upcoming “Mission: Impossible 4″, set to be directed by “The Incredibles’” Brad Bird.

As to the so-yesterday news that actors Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Anthony Mackie would be testing to partner up with Cruise in part four? Apparently those tests were canceled now that Paramount has chosen to go with Renner.

The idea is to partner Renner up with Hunt in the fourth movie, and should Cruise ever decide not to come back (or the studio decides to jettison Ethan Hunt), Renner’s character could easily step up to replace Hunt as the franchise’s new face. Curiously, the studio has apparently decided to ditch the “go younger” route (via the three young actors that were scheduled to test), and will instead go with the “older” Renner. I suppose it’s all relative, since he is 9 years younger than Cruise.

Renner, meanwhile, has Ben Affleck’s “The Town” coming up, and will soon be suiting up for Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers”. As a fan of his since his days on “SWAT” and “28 Weeks Later”, I’m loving his career trajectory.

Brad Bird will direct from a script by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. J.J. Abrams, who wrote and directed part three, will produce the fourth entry.

The Ladies Line Up for Cruise and Renner’s Mission Impossible 4

user posted image

You know, that “Mission Impossible” movie  that might not be called “Mission Impossible” at all? Or maybe it will be called “Mission Impossible”, and you can ignore that last sentence. Yeah, that one.

The latest news has three actresses scheduled to screen test for a major female role, which may or may not be the lead. According to the trades, the role is that of “a young female operative”, and the ladies looking to get a piece of the Cruise pie include Lauren German, Paula Patton, and “Smallville’s” Kristin Kreuk, last seen in the mystifyingly awful “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”.

We know where Kreuk has been, but what about German and Patton?

German (top) has been in some genre stuff like “Hostel 2″ and “Dark Country” with Thomas Jane, while Patton (below) would seem like the most blockbuster-ready, having been in “Deja Vu” with Denzel Washington and “Mirrors” with Kiefer Sutherland. She’s also absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, which always helps.

“Mission Impossible 4″, or whatever it ends up being called, will be directed by “The Incredibles’” Brad Bird, and will star Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, with Jeremy Renner recently cast as his partner. The movie is expected to revitalize the franchise.

Paula Patton Wins the Female Lead in Mission Impossible 4

user posted image

Paula Patton (above) has played the damsel in distress in a number of big Hollywood  movies already, including “Deja Vu” and “Mirrors”, and now she can add “Mission Impossible 4″ (or whatever it ends up being called) to her resume.

Deadline reports that the actress has won the female lead in the action-adventure franchise, beating out Lauren German and Kristen Kreuk for the gig. She’ll be playing a role described as “a young operative who works with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character.” Hopefully she’ll last longer than Keri Russell, the last “young operative who works with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character” from the third movie, who ended up being dispatched way early in the flick.

Patton joins Cruise and Jeremy Renner in the $150 Paramount film, which will be directed by Brad Bird and set for sometime in 2011. J.J. Abrams, who directed the third movie, returns to produce.

Part four, with its impending name change (the bright idea, apparently, is to dump the “Mission Impossible” completely from the title), will act as a “reboot” for the franchise. Kinda hard to “reboot” when the actor who did it for the last three films is still hanging around as the lead, but hey, whatever.

Shouldn't a "reboot" get a new lead? BTW Paula Patton was in "Precious" and that's the only movie I've watched with her in it, really pretty.

“They have like a terrific five-page fight sequence at the end of the film – brutal, brutal stuff…[Nyquist]’s this very charming, but calculating bad guy. Not your typical spy-film villain”.

My personal feelings on “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” do not reflect negatively on Nyqvist as an actor. He is actually really good, and this is the kind of role and film that will expose him to wider audience. And I like brutal five-page fight scenes.

This announcement follows hot on the heels of the news that Vladamir Mashkov will play a Russian agent in the film, though whether or not he will play a good guy or bad guy is not specified. Nyqvist and Mashkov join series lynchpins Cruise, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg, and newcomers Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton.

It’s always interesting when you hear that a movie is starting production, or “close” to starting production, then BOOM, the next day there are pictures from the set of said movie
. Such is the case with “Mission Impossible 4″. The last we heard, the film was still casting, and was setting shooting dates in various International locales, and then today there are pictures of star Tom Cruise on the set all dressed up (his character Ethan Hunt in disguise, we assume) on the “Mission Impossible 4″ set. Go figure.

Cruise returns as IMF superspy Ethan Hunt in “MI:4″, with Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton joining him. Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg will also return. Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”) is directing for Paramount.

After adding former “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” star Michael Nyqvist as the film’s male heavy, Brad Bird and company have now added “Robin Hood” actress Léa Seydoux as the female villain.

No real details on who Seydoux will be playing, just that it will be the lead female villain, though she seems mighty young (the gal is barely 25) to be trying to kill Ethan Hunt and company. Then again, she is French, so there’s that.

“Mission Impossible 4″, to be directed by Brad Bird, returns Tom Cruise as super IMF agent Ethan Hunt. He will be joined by Jeremy Renner as his new partner, as well as Paula Patton as a junior agent. Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are also expected back as returning IMF agents.

One of the things I always wanted for the franchise was for it not to have a number afterwards. I’ve never done sequels to films and I never thought of these films as sequels. Paramount has done a great job in coming up with a title, so it’s not going to be MI2, 3, 4: It’s going to be Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

Okey doke.

The Brad Bird-directed actioner blows up in theaters December 16, 2011. Cruies is joined by Jeremy Renner and Paul Patton.

Tom Cruise Stunt Video from Mission Impossible 4

Apparently there are a lot of stunts on “Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol”, if all the set pictures and videos that have been coming out of the movie are any indication. Here’s Tom Cruise in one such video performing a stunt that involves him climbing down the side of a building. I know it’s all stuntwork and they’ve got him harnessed in and there is probably zero danger of him actually falling, but still, sheesh, you couldn’t pay me enough to hang outside a skyscraper in the middle of downtown. Then again, I am a wuss, so there’s that.

“Ghost Protocol”, starring Cruise, Jeremy Renner, and Paula Patton, arrives in 2011. Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”) is directing.

Ving Rhames Not in Ghost Protocol? That’s (Mission:) Impossible

user posted image

Tom Cruise isn’t the only man who has been in all “Mission: Impossible” movies. Ving Rhames, as computer hacker Luther Stickell, has been right there alongside him in all three films. Now with the fourth one currently in production, it was expected that Rhames would be reprising his hacker role along with Simon Pegg from part three, joining newcomers Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, and Paula Patton for director Brad Bird. Not so fast, kiddies.

Rhames, while out promoting his upcoming “Death Race 2″, tells Movieweb in regards to “Ghost Protocol”:

QUOTE
I may be doing something very small in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol but I will just say that the budget changed dramatically and I’ll leave it at that.

When asked if this means he won’t be appearing in the sequel, he added:

QUOTE
Hmm… Cha-ching could create that but it’s up to them.

This is certainly news, but probably not as big a news as Rhames would like to think. I’m sorry, but Luther Stickell may have been in all previous “Mission: Impossible” movies, but let’s face it, most people don’t know that, not with the amount of supporting cast that’s come and gone over the years.

Right now, the studio’s focus seems to be passing the torch from Cruise to Renner, and I’m sure Rhames really doesn’t figure too much into those plans. Of course, I could be wrong.

"Ghost Protocol" Trailer will be attached to "Dark of the Moon" so expect an official release in a few days.

If removed watch here: http://thefilmstage.com/2011/06/22/mission...rk-of-the-moon/

Here's hoping Brad Bird has taken the "soul" that made "The Incredibles" a great action/superhero flick and put it to good use in live-action form.

That's the thing. I think his acting is fine, and I would like to see MI4 even if it was just so-so. But seeing Tom Cruise just keeps reminding me of Scientology. When you research that cult, it's some serious off-the-wall stuff that doesn't even make sense from a sci-fi perspective. Raelians even sound more logical (rael.org).

The thing is in Mission Impossible, Tom Cruise is famous for portraying Ethan Hunt, he popularized the character in the MI franchise
Same goes to Arnie = The Terminator, Bruce Willis is to Die Hard and Slyvester Stallone is to Rocky and Rambo

Phew... after 10 reviews RT has it at 90% - meaning it will never be a bad film but it won't be mighty spectacular.

It will still be a Must Watch movie. One of the most awaited movie of the year.

IMAX price is Digital 2D films - RM22, for Digital 3D movies-RM26 accordin to TGV's Facebook.

I was expecting RM 25 considering how its USD 3 extra compared to a normal experience in the states. but hey, RM 22 isn't that bad (plus, this being TGV with its slightly overpriced tickets).

I really dislike subtitles on 2D. It is covering 30% of the screen from the bottom, quite annoying. Recently watched Digital 2D for "The Muppets" and this was the case.

I remember last time Digital 2D had no subtitles at all (or was it 3D).

Quite annoying considering how sharp and crisp Digital 2D really is. Would definitely prefer MI4 in Digital 2D over 3D.

simply put, what u are paying for is a screen that is bigger than normal cinema screens but no where near as big as the five storey tall screens you are expecting - that is only applicable with a Real IMAX screen. With digital IMAX, think of it as paying for an 'original' anime DVD with fansubs - not the real thing but with a stamp of approval that costs money.

for the record, it's a great action film - i just wouldnt watch another movie on IMAX again.

I can't be sure but I am told that select scenes are filmed in IMAX and yet we aren't able to view the difference in aspect ratio for certain scenes ala in The Dark Knight, leading me to believe that some of the scenes may be cropped!

I can't be sure but I am told that select scenes are filmed in IMAX and yet we aren't able to view the difference in aspect ratio for certain scenes ala in The Dark Knight, leading me to believe that some of the scenes may be cropped!
*
I think its readjusted, but I can't be sure since i haven't seen it myself. And yes. Only 33 minutes of the footage are in actual IMAX. We'll probably know which one when the BD is released.

There is no way there has been any readjustment, I would have noticed - it's as jarring as the readjustment on Blu-ray. When you have watched the film, it's easy to spot which sequences are in IMAX (the tallest building in the world set-piece) and it's been cropped. I thought it looked weird seeing some of the scenes looking out of frame at first but now it makes sense...

Just got back frm MI4. It was just average. Nt even close to MI3. It wasn't bad but just OK only. The villain is nt good enough, there ain't much heart in the movie compare to Brad Bird's Ratatouie n Incredibles... The action couldn't match JJ Abram's as well. And also I didn't quite like the new character esp Brandt. Anil Kapoor is a joke in the movie Indians will be very dissapointed. The Plot is weak. Overall it's just a normal action flick.

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol (2011)

Possibly the BEST Mission Impossible to date

If I have to arrange them in sequence according to best to worst I have to go

1) Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol
2) Mission Impossible III
3) Mission Impossible
4) Mission Impossible II

There is just something about the way JJ Abrams direction, and I love

The Action, Suspense, Intensity and great GREAT storytelling.

I especially like the "old school" open sequence. As the Beatles say, Love, Love, LOVE!!!

John Woo didn't "get" the franchise...

There is a rumor going around saying that Paramount wants Jeremy Renner to take lead in the next one, and I have to say, that would be a mistake

Tom Cruise ROCKS here

He worked hard on this and he SOLD every scene he was in

This is is probably third or second last movie I'll watch in the cinema this year.

Am toying with the idea of watching this in the new Imax cinema this coming wednesday. That is HOW MUCH I like this

Most excellent movie

Go watch it, ya hear

My two Sen

Watched MI:4 in IMAX Times Square.
Overrall the movie was nice and the action scenes are well planned and filmed. Personally feel J.J.Abrams should direct this then Brad Bird !!

But there are few non logic scenes in the movie especially the building climbing and car chase in the sand strom. Even though not so logic but i enjoyed it. In some part i feel Tom Cruise head is more stronger than some super heroes !!
The big let down is the villain., need more powerfull villain character.

-Tom Cruise is awesome but look old
-Simon Pegg is funny
-Paula Patton is not so hot
-Jeremy Renner is getting better but dont think so he is the man to replace Ethan Hunt
-Anil Kapoor is wasted

Just got back from Curve watching this movie. Overall, 6/10.

Unfortunately, my movie enjoyment was constantly interrupted by a bunch of African retards. The idiot next to me chit chat over the phone for 2 hours during the movie. And he walked in and out from the cinema every 30 minutes. The rest of his friends also retards... making hell a lot of noise. I had to move 2 seats way from them.

Next time, I will bring along my GSM Jammer... fed up with these people. If want to talk over the phone, GTFO la!

Watch it today. One of the better action movie this year. Watch it in 2D.

I wish they could develop the villain character more. But still MI: Ghost Protocol is well paced action movie.

Watched it in IMAX Pyramid. Seats are comfortable, visual is clear and audio is pretty awesome. The only thing is the screen is not as big as it should be. As for the movie, pretty good action movie like most have mentioned.

Yup. The IMAX in Malaysia is probably the smallest one available. The one in BTS would've been a WHOLE LOT bigger. Well, that is if GSC is smart enough to compete now. hehe.

Audio is SUPREMELY FANTASTIC. Especially in IMAX sequences. It really makes you feel the vibes.

Kobe, there are noticable changes during the switch from IMAX and normal 35mm. I noticed black bars.

As for the movie, Brad Bird definitely did not disappoint. biggrin.gif

Will probably watch MI4 again in GSCMAXX just to see if there's any difference. If the difference is only the screen size, I'd rather go GSCMAXX instead.
If you're thinkin of checking out IMAX, do it while they're still showing MI4. Its probably the only movie worth watching in IMAX until the dark knight rises. Avoid seats thats numbered 1, 2, 27 and 28 because its too near the sides and avoid the first five rows because its too near the screen. For your info, once you enter the hall your phone will have no signal. So no more talking on the phone during movies.

The audio in IMAX is already enough to justify the pricey ticket. From now on thats where I'll be watching my action movies. Yeah GSC better do something!

Don't know if you guys know about this, GSC already bought over IMAX and thus became GSC MAXX.

And yes all the facility are still available in there, same as before i watch IMAX back in 200x.

GSC Maxx shows 35mm on a big screen, resulting in a blurry picture due to the stretch. On digital this would be a similar case, unless they were to utilize dual projectors like IMAX Sunway does.

Watched it today.

One word - explosive! flex.gif

By far one of the best movies of the year ("Potter 7 Pt2", "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" the other two).

Hands down the best MI movie of the lot, and golly me, Brad Bird nailed it.

It has every imaginable ingredient needed for a Hollywood big budget action flick.

This one easily gets a 9/10 from me.

The casting is perfect, and for the 'first' time I noticed how much Tom Cruise has aged... smile.gif But still kicking serious butt!

I asked myself - - what could have been done differently?

Short answer - - nothing.

Highly, highly recommended. What a movie to end the year. Worth waiting this late in the year for this.

I must have watched another MI4. Sorry guys, not to be a spoilt sport but..

It started well, got to the predictable why are we here again situation.

For me the graphics effects seemed a little underwhelmed as if not 'big budgeted'

Maybe I've been numbed by awesome big movies effects. I find this cruise movie as if there were much left as if most had gone to his salary.

I dunno, honestly it occurs as if the MI series is bankrupt of new ideas. The BMWs In there can't save the film.

What MI score? Not quite as memorable as the 1st MI (I know not many like de palma work, but it was A better MI to me) Its just no your typical 'MI' franchise slickness in it, maybe it's because the IMF got ... (removed for those who haven't watched it yet)

Passable 2.5/5

Came back watching this.

I have to say - between all MI movies... this feels more well-balance than the rest. At least, in terms of screen-time. While for me, I do admit one thing - better pacing, better action (even though certain scenes can be unbelievable... but hey, it's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE), added a bonus to some nice humor and more importantly - it keeps the audience going.

What I like most is - FINALLY!!! It's mission impossible as it should have been... added with the original music score. While the villain in this movie is not entirely well develop on the intentions as to why he wanted to do to create a war, I always wonder was the title of the movie (Ghost Protocol) meant just on the focus on the IMF being disbanded hence due to that reason and the focus is there, hence the focus on the intentions of the villain is not important... hmmm

Overall:- 3.5 out of 5. Finally a MI movie that I truly appreciates. Brad Bird really did bring that feel to this mission...

One thing (and now I remember) is that the difficulties they go through in order to make the mission work and how it did not go smoothly as it should. Did we see that in the previous series? hmm.gif

Because if the previous series the missions were done quite smoothly (and not because of the villains one step ahead of the IMF team), then it also look into how difficult it was for Ethan's IMF team being disavowed and they had to depend on whatever current technology they have then to make the mission work without the assistance of the government... makes Ghost Protocol title meaning more realistic (besides the action sequence of course)

I watched at IMAX Sunway Pyramid today..

-The scene where he drive the BMW 1 series so FAKE! How can suddenly press START button engine start without key.

- BMW 6 Series Convertible softop roof terbang in sandstorm, FFFUUUU my Dream car not reliable leh...

- The chase scene between the Audi Q7 and the BMW 6 Series, how come the Audi driver can escape and lari after crash that teruk?

But then, the IMAX experience is AWESOME! Can even feel the seats shaking..

Am I the only one that thinks that this MI is not up on par as the older episodes?.... hmm.gif

Story line to me is so-so only. The older episodes have better plots as well as more visual plots.

Actions wise, I think previous installment is better although most are ridiculously unreal same as the older ones. How can you get a knock flying from a few blocks up hitting the glass in the face yet still have a shinny smile with no bruise.

Suspense wise I can hardly see any. As compared to the older installment, the suspense keeps you on the seat.

To me, this is the worst MI flicks I have seen.

agreed on this, watched it on imax pyramid just now as well...
while entertaining it doesnt feel as good as the previous ones...
the story is a little too straight forward imho, development wasn't tat well and as many mentioned before (if they have no IMF, they are not really hunted that much as well)...

still it is entertaining as a action flick (just like diehard)...

Not one of the best MI series in my IMHO. Action wise is good thou unrealistic too over the top if u ask me.

But to me they should have utilize more on the mask thingy. For me tats part of the essence of an MI series. It's like a Bond flick with no hot chick sad.gif

In MI, you get to see Ethan puts away a mask into a bag when one of the fire brigade member questions him for his credentials - Nothing fancy here.
In MI2, you get to see Ethan actually pulls off Hugh Stamp's mask when he was escaping from the facility - Ok, that was cool.
In MI3, you get to see how the mask was manufactured in the scene where Luther and Ethan were discussing about marriage life - Wow, so that's how it came about!

I wonder what's the mask scene like in MI4. tongue.gif

among all 4 MI, I've enjoyed this one the most thumbup.gif
maybe because it got more humor in it compared to previous one
also maybe this time they are depending more on luck and instinct, rather than technologies and well planned strategies,

like the scene in water with the flare
I was WTF??? at first, so stupid meh?
but with the explanation afterward, it all make sence thumbup.gif

like you, i failed to see whats all the bubla about MI4, it was pointed out the villain is almost 'non-existent', almost card board character but it was pointed out the main reason of the film is about how the whole IMF got disavowed & its about how ethan & his 2+1 remaining IMF gets impossible to save the world from nuclear war. second half of the movies was when hollywood meets bollywood, well the tamed the singing but still had a little gloss of dancing

the bollywood (Anil Kapoor, i think) was well, did his part as he was suppose too, i guess (as a playboy billionaire indian style) but card board character in hollywood view.

That scene bolded above as you mention I felt was quite a good man-made way to escape laugh.gif

Yeah, I felt it too as well. While it is different compare to the rest of the series (since to each of their own, the directors had their own style to go along with it), its not about its the best or not but rather how entertaining the movie gets for anybody. For me, its good enough to keep the pacing of the movie flowing. I mean... it's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - how reality can this get to even say "hey, its unrealistic".

For me, its still a fun movie and enjoyable to watch.

At least one will always remember the motorcycle chase scene. But for Ghost Protocol, I just can't seem to think of any memorable scenes as a punch as well as a lot of character's story just died off and left hanging.

MI3 has the best plot so far and many good acting. A balance mix of action vs drama. MI1 drill into more story drama.

When I read through, I'm actually surprised many thinks that it's among the best from all the 4 installments which I thought I'm the only odd one out.

My point is to make it better, they could have actually include the scene on how the Serbs supposedly taken out Ethan's wife and how Ethan supposedly massacre the 6 Serbs assassins. Those flashback scene can be while Brandt is relating his experience in overshadowing Ethan.

As usual, most of the action are too exaggerating to the point of unreal. At least pls make it more believable. You see Bond with crooked face bruises and all. You see Jason Bourne with gun shot wounds, cuts etc... but Ethan was just too perfect with hardly and injury to tend to. Except of course the last scene which again ppl or at least I would expect a better suspense yet to me is a let down how the fight ended.

Overall to me this is the sort of movie you went to and say bravo, yes actions and slight "cold" humor then the next thing you know, you forgot about the story because there's no story intact as the plot is left hanging.

I almost booked Gold Class, and luckily I didn't. Else I would have regretted it.

If you asked me, I would say all the MIs before that had their plan foiled up and Ethan always depends on hunches and luck which is the biggest factor in most of the "espionage" movies out there. This one just showed that all the backup equipments failed to the max.

On the humour part, to me most of the installment has it. Just that whether everyone gets it. This is more blatant. However when I watched it on Saturday morning, hardly anyone laughed out loud in the Cinema.

I don't know - I felt M:I-2 did not have much action but did focus on the story between Ethan and Nyah Nordoff-Hall (played by Thandie Newton). For me, this was one of the least favorite John Woo films I ever felt disappointed (Hard-Boiled to this day is my all-time favorite because when it comes to most action and gun blazing - not a single movie can top this that able to create a good plot with it).

The thing about Mission: Impossible series - it is about teamwork and not about just one person - which the first three films always focus on Ethan Hunt alone... and the only one in action. Ghost Protocol on the other hand... and surprisingly, the team members themselves get into action (except Benji Dunn... at least, he fire a shot) themselves in their own way.

While many argue about the mask method - the actual TV series was never about that but rather about to each of the abilities of the team members of IMF and each of the members have their own screen time. The movie series on the other hand (for the first three) - its always Ethan Hunt. At least... Ghost Protocol has that balance for the IMF team.

I do not know but funny... nobody mention Josh Holloway here laugh.gif

Again, no.

I felt this was the best MI ever. And my experience was made better with IMAX.

I get the villain though. In the sense that he's trying to create chaos in the hopes of just watching the world burn, so that we could evolve further. Thinks he's sort of a messiah as such.

Anil Kapoor however, was a huge waste! His character is just sad...

Gotta hand it down to Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner though. It would've been crazier if it was Nick Frost, but I don't think that's possible. laugh.gif

I wonder what's the mask scene like in MI4.  tongue.gif
*
I do not mean they did not implement the mask method in the franchise. They did actually in all 4 but in ghost protocol it was not fully utilize. Unlike previous 3 which it was essential to the plot.

IMF just disavowed after the Kremlin bombing, not disbanded.
at the end of parking lot fight scene, u heard dat Russian Police/special force agent saying to Ethan, "so, were not enemies then?"

And they found out it was Henrikson doing all this time..i think dat cleared the air between both US & Russia...hence
IMF came back to fully operational.. Do correct me if im mistaken

my memory's rusty.. in the mission impossible world, is the IMF an officially recognised division of the US intelligence?

It wasn't really explained, but since we saw Ving Rhames at the end, you may assume IMF is still there. hehe.

This is why I felt MI4 is one of the best movies of the year...

I 'recall' watching MI1 and MI2 but have since forgotten it since those years I was not too much of a cinema go-er. I do recall some of the cool stunts and mind blowing explosions. I also recall Mr Cruise being noticeably younger.

When they decided to do MI4, Tom Cruise had to be in it. It will not be an MI movie without Mr Cruise. And then I heard about the rest of the cast - - very smart! Jeremy Renner ("Hurt Locker"), Paula Patton ("Precious") and Simon Pegg (too many funny flicks to name!).

There is an entire action sequence in MI4 that is downright memorable, and will last the test of time. The Burj Khalifa climb *bows to thee* My hands became sweaty during this. What an incredible concept. To put it on paper is one cool thing, but to execute it the way it was done is a whole other thing. On a more 'eerie' note, apparently Tom Cruise did all the stunts for this sequence. I did not believe it, until I saw an image of Mr Cruise sitting on top of the tower. I mean... wow. The way the scene was set, the build up, the tension and of course the dizzy feeling of height - - you got to give credit to the entire production! It is devilish entertainment at its finest. I also heard the IMAX version of this scene was spellbending and showcases everything IMAX has to offer (apparently there is a much larger view and the glass curves more? No idea..)

The opening sequence was gritty and brutal, the Russian prison escape. You have to love how it opened the movie. Also Sawyer was a bit of a surprise. Sadly, his 'time' on screen was brief but quite memorable.

Elaborate, visionary and downright mind-blowing action sequences fill the movie almost every 5 minutes. At every moment there is tension in the air. MI4 could easily have been a fancy action flick which throws some MI references for the sake of it. It does not.

Also, the very idea that IMF had to be disbanded, they are on their own thing... you have to once again give credit where its due. Rather than following the mundane routine of slapping in another high-stakes mission, this time around there is a genuine sense of "you are on your own". Whatever they were doing was not part of a perfectly pitched plan.

Loved also how they traveled the world as their mission progressed. Mumbai party was particularly memorable thanks to Paula Patton and Anil Kapoor's performances.

Hold on, what about Benji played by Simon Pegg! This character has added a nice, soothing dose of humor for what could have been a very serious film. You have to have a laugh to tame the action, and Simon Pegg delivers (what he does best). Quite surprised Brandt played by Jeremy Renner was equally funny.

The evil villain Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist - wasn't he the 'good guy' in The Girl With a Dragon Tatoo?) is a madman wanting to start a nuclear war for the greater good. In this day and age, such a war is real and when the right parties are provoked it could just happen. And you definitely don't want such a thing happening. I really loved how he always kept a maniacal look - - a typical villain look. I have nothing to complain about the villain here. One of my favorite actors was in the movie, Tom Wilkinson. Saw them together in "Valkyrie".

At the end of the day, I must say MI4 really shines in one area where all the other previous MI films did not - - characterization. Strong characterization thanks also to the driving force of Brad Bird ("Ratatouille", "The Incredibles"). He delivered great standing-ovation worthy action in "The Incredibles" and one can easily see a lot of his vision shining here in live-action form.

I easily give it a 9/10, it is not a 10 merely because it did not have that essential "Don't tell me you haven't watched..." feel. Of course, MI4 will go down as being the most critically acclaimed MI movie ever made and quite possibly one of the most memorable sequences in any movie to date (Dubai skyscrapper). I had no issues at all with pretty much every aspect of the movie. If I can't see how something needs fixing, then the movie is worthy of being a "Must Watch".

MI4 definitely is a "Must Watch" for the year. In Tom Cruise we believe.

MI4 is NOT the best MI, the best is still the first one. Somehow something important is lacking in the 4th. It's got a lot of good scenes, but nothing too breathtaking, i think the director failed to capture the essence of MI.

there are at least 1 scene in every (previous) MI that makes u hold your breath, e.g. the dangling situation in the server room in the first one where a drop of sweat will make u hold on to your seat.

The second one (John Woo film?), don't mention, it's CRAP, so i'm going to skip it. The third one, a memorable scene is when Cruise wants to copy the bad guy's voice in the toilet. Those are really REALLY SLOW moving sequences / paced but it generates so much sweaty palms and high blood pressure for the audiences.

This MI however, everything moves TOO QUICKLY. The scene on the Dubai tower should be one of those moments but it just isn't. It can be made much much better if the director were to slow things down. I know they are putting some effort in this scene but it just isn't THAT exciting. And about the Kremlin, SPOILER:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

And there is just one HUGE difference in this MI that missed the WHOLE POINT of the movie. SPOILER:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I'm sorry to say that this really is the MOST DISAPPOINTING MI EVER FILMED, it's even worst than the 2nd one. although the 2nd one is really crap, but at least it's GOT STYLE, LOL sweat.gif and creativity (kind of), this MI just copied every other action film out there and make them worst.

3/10

It's just a source of entertainment - getting too serious also not healthy. Later heart-attack how? tongue.gif

There are many movies we all have high expectations but I would rather have low expectations than just getting all rile up and then at the end of it, spoil one's mood and getting into that unhappy mood also will spoil many things as well... might spark into an argument instead of a discussion (I have seen my fair share here...)

Haha no lah. That was explained. I'm just wondering how BMW got a working unit. Plus that emergency warning is also a built in feature in the car. From what BMW explained in their site.

Caught this movie out of the high rating it's getting and rave reviews all around. I have to admit I went into the cinema with huge anticipation, maybe that's why I kinda felt awkward upon watching.

The actions were well-executed, I can see that the director or whoever responsible of the action, have some really awesome ideas, however the COMEDY sometimes ruin them. Like, when things are supposed to be dead serious, hello...we're having life-death situation here, and these people are making it into some sort of comedy. I agree that the balance is good, but when it's done too much is a bit distracting.

Sometimes, I'm not sure whether to laugh or feel nervous about certain scenes. If I have to choose which scene I love the most, definitely the Dubai scene. But even then, like someone mentioned, the director should have focused on it bit more for us viewers to really feel on the edge.

Anyways, it's still one of the best movies this year, no doubt. Just felt something missing and not sure whether I was watching an action or comedy movie after coming out of the cinema. hmm.gif

this is definitely one of the best ACTION movies of the year, if u say one of the BEST MOVIE of the year it's not really there yet, actually it's CRAP if u want to compare to one of the best movies of the year - The King's Speech

Given that the IMAX screen at Sunway Pyramid isn't that big, would you guys still recommend watching this there instead of a normal screen?

I might just go for the Digital 2D version since that has better visual clarity, but then I'm hearing from you guys the subtitles take up 1/3 of the screen? That's just ridiculous.

Subtitle, i'd say has that problem. but I came in for the screen and the sound. The sound is what vowed me.

Now I must press on to second viewing at GSC Maxx to test that hall meself.

pedestrian at best brad birds skill as an animation director doesn't translate well to live action

the good:
the best action sequence is in the opening scene featuring sawyer falling from a building. sawyer as an agent?!!
the ever dependable tc and also him running in a couple of scenes
paula patton's gorgeous green gown

the bad:
does jeremy renner sleepwalks throughout this?
simon pegg shouldn't be in any flick without edgar wright
wish they would inject some classic mi panache in this

pure dung:
the opening credits

its oklah serviceable action flick. after witnessing what spielberg has done with tintin, brad bird seems like a hack. he brought nothing to the table, visually nor live.

Just finished watching it. Overall it's not bad but to me the action scene doesn't seems to be intense enough. Camera not shaky enough and the cutting is not fast enough. Lovin the jokes and Jeremy Renner

Yeah the screen isn't that big but sooner or later there will be a time when you'll have to try out IMAX. Even if its just for once and I highly recommend starting with MI4. Other cinemas might have bigger screen but there's no way they can match the audio in IMAX. It also helps that the seats are comfortable and spacious (especially the rm24 ticket). I've watched it twice in IMAX and the subs isn't really that much of a bother. And yeah its in stunning 2D and as clear as it can get. You're missing out on the explosive audio if you don't catch this in IMAX.

agree on this...
i dun get the hype on the bigger screens when the resolution still matters and ur viewing need to be comfortable...
for me the scene in dubai + the sound effect is already worth my 22bucks for it >.<

Sadly, the only movie next shot in IMAX, is Dark Knight Rises. And that's half a year away.

Lets not consider the remastered 3D Imax movies please.

Actual pain only comes or rather portrayed in the last scene tongue.gif

Kremlin and Dubai doesn't justify his injury wink.gif

Heck it's "Impossible" for starters. The opening from Agent Hannaway already shows that "impossible" is the correct term and expectation for the movie. haha

Very good movie, but I'm not sure if I prefer this or MI:III, which I found to be extremely entertaining as well. I probably need to watch all three previous movies again. The way I rank the series as of now:

1 & 2. MI:III / MI:IV
3. MI
4. MI:II

Anyhow it is the best live action action movie this year, because the best action movie award already went to Tintin.

Possibly the BEST Mission Impossible to date

1) Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol
2) Mission Impossible III
3) Mission Impossible
4) Mission Impossible II

That happens in almost every Tom Cruise movie though. It's just the way he rolls, love him or hate him. Tom Cruise needs a capable director to keep him in check or he will waltz through an entire movie with that annoying I'm-Friggin'-Tom-Cruise showboat face.

Idiots do tend to think alike. tongue.gif

I'm a bit perplexed why the RT score for this is that much higher than MI:III. Both movies that a similar tone and style, but III has a much better villain in the form of Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first three movies had different directors and very different styles, but the fourth, despite having a different director as well, pretty much employs the same formula, tone and style from Abram's third movie. That's not a knock on Brad Bird's debut live action feature, it is a solid and entertaining blockbuster, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table. Again, this isn't really a fault, just saying what I noticed.

For the record though, I think the first is a bit outdated and has too much talking in that plot heavy "talking makes the movie look smart when it actually isn't" kind of way. The last time I saw it anyway. Need a rewatch. The second I can barely remember, because I watched it like when I was 8 or something, and I hated it back then. The third was a whole lot of fun.

I have to agree with both you and RT. What I agree with with Rotten Tomato is I LOVE the pacing of MI:4, so overall, it felt, to me, a better movie. You got it right with, Philip Seymour Hoffman was a much MUCH better villian!! One of the main reason MI:3 lost points with me is Maggie Q... She is SUCH a horse!!!...

But was the pacing of IV that much different from III? Because from what I recall, III's plotting was extremely driven and propulsive as well, and I distinctly remember that being one of the movie's high point. As of now, Hoffman gives III a slight edge over IV.

What's wrong with Maggie Q? She's pretty hot too, although I think I prefer the two woman in this one. Paula Patton or something. And that other french girl who was in Robin Hood and Midnight in Paris. Oh what a cute face she has.

Léa Seydoux.

I disagree that this and the third are similar in tone. While I agree that Hoffman is a far superior villain (the best in the series) but there is very little doubt in my mind that Bird is a far superior action director. The time he takes to allow his set-pieces to 'breathe' and escalate such as the sequence at the skyscrapper and the car factory is something Abrams has never been good at (not a knock at Abrams).

I felt not a "single" villain is really memorable at all in the entire series even...

But in terms of the style each director take on the series, to each of them they have certain quality that is good and bad as well.

Maybe I'm due a viewing of III again, but from what I remember there wasn't nothing wrong with the action in III. The Burj Khalifa sequence is an exception, as I'm sure Bird utilized the IMAX cameras to capture the sense of vertigo that most other movies fail to adequately reproduce. He succeeds. But the Vatican sequence in III, while not serving up the high-rise spectacle of the Burj scene, is still a mightily cool sequence in itself that rivals the entire Dubai sequence in IV. The bridge attack scene was also pretty terrific. Very nicely shot.

So yeah, we got ourselves lieMAX.

Can't imagine how good the Burj Khalifa scene would have been in real IMAX.

Btw, take a look at this.

So yeah, we got ourselves lieMAX.

Can't imagine how good the Burj Khalifa scene would have been in real IMAX.

If Berjaya was smart enough to keep promoting its IMAX hall, we would've gotten it. All the works. because that hall, is HUGE.

Ads and no widescreen... Nah tongue.gif I have the DVD anyway.

Yeah the IMAX at berjaya was much bigger than the one at Sunway, but I've heard even that was small compared to the real IMAX screens elsewhere. There's also an IMAX screen in our planeterium, can't remember how big it is since its been such a long time when I was there but the screen is dome shaped.

Is the screen at berjaya now smaller since GSC took charge? I was there last year for TRON legacy and it felt smaller than before.

When TDK was showing I actually asked them why didn't they bring in the real IMAX reel instead of blowing up the normal 35mm, and they told me the business was loss making and they couldn't afford to bring in the real deal.

Don't blame the format, blame the mall. Times Square is a horrible place to shop in. Getting from one floor to the next is a chore and there is very little worth visiting in between walking from one floor to another.

I too won't see another film in LieMax with the exception of Dark Knight Rises.

There aren't any other LieMax movies except for TDKR after MI4 (in native IMAX i meant). But hey, 50 minutes of IMAX in TDKR is worth RM 22 if u ask me.

Just watched it. It's just a typical movie with a modern setting equipped and dramatize with high tech gadgets and tools that make many of us hoo-hah over their actions. But the hard fact is that the storyline is just very plain and predictable. A bit of a cliche but overall it's worth if you want to laze around on your lazy Saturday night.

I agree actually. It was pretty predictable. <rant>The elevator shaft 'suspended' trick? Come on man...ain't that a bit old? And the science behind it? If it was based on opposing magnetic poles then he wouldn't be following the rover when it moved would he? I also feel they tried too hard to be relevant by including tablets here and there etc. And the jokes? Simon Pegg's efforts at being funny were pretty tame. He's normally better than this </rant>

That's the thing with action movies. They never try to be different. It's always the Russians, Koreans, Chinese, Middle Easterners and some nuclear doomsday device. Casino Royale was something else. Granted, it was based on a book, but it was something else. I can't think of many other action movies that reinvented their series though, but movie number 4 would've been a good place to start.

Actually I was about to say in my previous post that this movie isn't Casino Royale which brought something new, but just couldn't be bothered. Then again Casino Royale was inspired by the Bourne series, and I'm glad they didn't go down that route. I didn't want an action flick with a quite such a serious tone, I wanted one where I could just relax and leave my brain at the door, something silly. This movie was that, although I do feel MI:III was slightly better because of the superior villain and because I thought there was genuinely something at stake in III (Ethan's wife + the sheer menace of Hoffman's character gave me a sense of that). Here, as you guys point out, the plot is vanilla, I didn't give a shit about it. I'm serious when I say I switched myself off when there was lots of talking about the plot in between the action scenes.

But everything else (i.e. the action) was good. So it's all good to me in the end. Nothing against any of you who wanted a smarter movie though.

Yup, but I guess I just went in with too high expectations, what with the 93% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes and all. I do feel MI3 was better because of the emotions involved and it wasn't a conventional stop the <insert evil country here> terrorist plot.

Me as well, went in with high expectation, from the Net ratings, and hearing from a cousin who don't really like Tom Cruise's acting before this saying it's good.
Luckily, managed to adjust expectation after the less than bombastic opening scene (before the opening credit) by recalling Brad Bird's previous works in The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille, where characters interaction & development is more important, action scenes are used (and done well) only when really fit in the story, and humour plays a part even when the situation is deadly serious.

Then I starts to appreciate the main difference in this 4th installment;

I watched the first MI movie. Wow I've been talking shit haven't I. Great movie. The script is smart, and while it isn't action heavy like the other movies, the setpieces it does have are very cool. Love the opening credits as well, something the new movie was rather bad at. Surprising how much taste in movie changes in just a few years. It isn't even outdated as I had remembered (apart from a very few, small scenes).

So... I may have to place the first movie at the top of the series, but I better watch II and III first lest I start calling myself an idiot again.

I watched this yesterday and it was fun movie, nice one to pass time. What I did like in this movie is the apparent level of improvisation shown. No doubt the previous ones had it too but to me, all of them seems carefully calculated while in this one, in the words of Vincent (Tom Cruise, Collateral), "Now we gotta make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, Darwin, shit happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it."

This theme alone made the movie enjoyable for me. Not the tech because you know you're in for it. Not the scenery because you'd seen it in the trailer.

However, in my listing, the original mission impossible is at the top, followed by both the 3rd and the 4th because both has it's unique auro to it. MI2? What's that?

On the side note, the one thing I noticed in the very beginning of this movie is the man is old. Tom Cruise is old. Sigh... He still look great in Knight and Day but in this one, he's just old... Also, when he wore the hood, it reminds me of him in Minority Report where he jogs in the middle of the night, finding the drug dealer.

Good movie. smile.gif

I loved the movie. Best of the series, and best action movie of the year without a doubt.

I think what you guys need to realize is how intentionally different it is from the rest of the series - because every movie in the series has been different from each other.

1st - twisty, convoluted mystery
2nd - operatic Hong Kong-style action and romance
3rd - gritty and intensely personal

And this one? Is just plain fun. Not an out-and-out action comedy, but more light-hearted than every other so far. The plot is a rollercoaster from start to finish, and it just doesn't bother to delve into the characters or get too emotional. It doesn't intend to.

I think a lot of people's criticisms against it stem from the fact that they just don't understand what it's intending - that they want the movie to be something it's not.

I disagree. There were a lot of shortcuts in the plot. In the 3rd movie we're made to understand that he got married and left this life behind, and then suddenly he's separated from his wife to protect her and conveniently able to undertake missions again. And need I mention the criminal underuse of veteran actor Anil Kapoor's talents and Simon Pegg's wit (the jokes were meh at best)? If the movie intends to be one you're not supposed to take seriously, then it succeeds. I personally had different expectations but I guess that must be just me.

Why criminal overuse? Kapoor's sole purpose was comic relief and he fulfilled it just fine. Also, I thought Simon Pegg's jokes were pretty funny, and so did the rest of the cinema audience with me. Seems like you were unlucky enough to be in an unresponsive crowd.

While I agree with a lot of what you said, was the new movie that much different from the third? Sure, the third had more intense pacing and tone (big chunk due to Hoffman), but it was also a whole damn lot of fun. This one was lighter, brisker, and not that different. The first three movies were all very different, of course.

I just feel that III accomplished almost everything that was good and fun here whilst also being more thrilling overall.

Tone is exactly what differentiates this one from the others. Third one had Ethan Hunt watching the love of his life get murdered before his eyes. That's J.J. Abrams' trademark, combining action and suspense with personal emotional stakes. MI4 had nothing so serious, and was even a bit light-hearted. It had Hunt yelling "Mission... accomplished!!!" laugh.gif And there was definitely something almost-comedic about how one thing after another goes wrong with their plans. They couldn't even use their masks this time, because their mask-making machine broke down for no reason.

Whether or not it was explained doesn't change the fact that it was a shortcut meant to retcon the ending of III so Cruise can pull more sequels out of the MI hat. The fact that Kapoor was only used as comic relief was a criminal underuse for me. He's a veteran actor, very capable of pulling off an even meatier role rather than the 2-bit 5 minute part he was given. Simon Pegg's jokes are typically deeper and more cynical with double meaning as he showed in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Granted he probably didn't write his lines here but it was more slapstick, situational humour; not the humour I was used to watching him deliver.

The mask making thing kinda highlighted another minor issue for me though. A world famous assassin, looking to sell codes to a nuclear device for a hefty amount of money (or diamonds), did not bother to look up what the person she was selling to looked like? And vice versa?

In other words, you would prefer that Ethan Hunt retire happily and there'll be no more Mission: Impossible movies? Then why are you watching this one?

Too bad. I thought Chow Yun-Fat was criminally underused in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. But the fact is, Kapoor's role is just that. If you want to give him a meatier role - maybe make him the main villain, or something - you are thinking about the script that you want to write, not the movie you're watching.

Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are movies that Pegg himself wrote (along with Edgar Wright). This is not one of them. Pegg has acted in plenty movies he did not write himself, and he has no problem doing so.

Not a problem to me. Lots of people are not comfortable with putting up public profiles of themselves with their pictures on the internet, why would an assassin and a terrorist do so?

Again, it seems like your problem with the movie is that you have too many unfair expectations of it.

I watched it because I wanted to. Well, now that you mention it, it wouldn't be wrong for him to retire. I saw MI3 as a good point to induct a new lead into the role. And I agree with you, Chow Yun Fat was underused in Pirates 3, another movie I had my problems with. The role Kapoor was given could've easily been pulled off by a lesser star. By the looks of it, it seems he was only included to give the team a reason to go to Mumbai and to appeal to Hindi movie fans. Simon Pegg was pretty good in Star Trek in my opinion. A movie he didn't write himself yet delivered some pretty good humour as and when it was needed. You're talking about regular people. I'm talking about an assassin and terrorist who have much more resources than the regular internet. It just doesn't make sense that they would leave so much to chance. And yeah, a Russian nuclear terrorist? James Bond called, they want their 1960s scripts back.

Let's just agree to disagree. You obviously think a light hearted sequel is good. I think it's good for a Saturday night viewing, not for a franchise.

No matter what you think of the movie, you have to admit Ethan Hunt lost all his cred when he put on his... Apple earbuds.

^ lol.

Anyways, there's a surprisingly large amount of debate regarding this action movie.

Personally, I treat it as a rollercoaster ride. Ride it. Enjoy it. Bye bye.

And that is exactly what this movie is like. A roller coaster.

Try to analyse more deeply into this and you'll come out sorely disappointed.

It's a typical, formulaic, JJ Abrams movie. I don't know if any of you have noticed this by now, but almost all JJ Abrams shows are similar in nature. His tv series. His movies. All style, all action. No substance. Even the storyline is contrived. The scenes, dialogue, characters, etc are all just there to function as plot devices to move the story forward. Nothing more.

Which is why I find it amusing when people say he is a genius, storyteller, brilliant movies, yada yada. That's all nonsense.

Yes. He is very good at generating suspense, no matter how contrived (remember the seduction + floating magnet scene? Contrived story telling at its worst.) Yes. He is very good at appealling to modern pop cultures and sensibilities (How he rebooted the nerdy Star Trek in a witty and modern way.) He also likes to make an effort to surprise the viewer (Tom Cruise knocking his head while jumping into the hotel room window) and sometimes likes to cram 101 details a minute into every minute of a movie (Lost, anyone?).

This more or less sums up a majority of his work. And I sometimes like his movies for that. But make no mistake. His is not Oscar material. He can make excellent rollercoaster rides of a movie. That's it.

As for comparisons with the previous MI series, I really hated the first 2. MI is supposed to be about the TEAM. Not Tom, bloody, Cruise. I haven't watched the 3rd movie so can't really comment about that.

I don't think that Jeremy renner guy can fill Tom cruise shoes. To me he kinda looks like a apek. Should have cast Chris pine.

Nothing spectacular but nice enough to watch and be entertained. Leave your brains outside and just enjoy the ride. It's a nice touch that the director introduced imperfection and miscalculation in this one. All 4 of them made mistake, either in their previous mission or the current one. Ethan is old and should retire but looks like he's in for another mission. Carter is convincing as a female agent. Benji, nothing much to say except some of his we're seriously hilarious, if you listen to it & Brandt, rumors has it that he's going to replace Ethan... Oh well...

Yeah. It's an entertaining movie. And yes, I agree. The imperfections were a good idea as they added to the uncertainty and made the team look more human.

I agree. An enjoyable roller coaster ride if you leave your brain at the door. And I kinda figured that Brandt was being molded to take over as for the first time in MI history, Hunt didn't do the signature elevator shaft suspension trick.

Just watch it last night.

Didn't put any expectations on the movie, heck I don't even see the trailers.

The movie was enjoyable at most, especially the Kremlin scene. Lots of seat gripping moments. Simon Pegg's witty statements doesn't seem to blend in with Tom Cruise's dialogues and expressions either.

Quite disappointed with the 1 man super fit and genius villain.

Overall, I like Tom Cruise's sprint, looks fast, tense and logical. His sprint looks the most genuine among all other actor's sprint I must say.

Just my thoughts biggrin.gif

Mission Impossible 5

“We’ve just started talking about it. He [Tom Cruise] is very busy with All You Need is Kill, JJ [Abrams] is very busy with the latest Star Trek movie, I’m promoting this movie [Jack Reacher]. Obviously I love working with him and would love to do it, it’s daunting in that I would have to follow Brad Bird. The biggest movie in the GENRE! But at the same time that’s kinda what I like about it, I like to come from a place of lowered expectation and I have to imagine that as someone put it earlier today “Street Level” – between Way of the Gun and Reacher, people’s expectations could not be any lower.

I think they sould ask De Palma or John Woo to return as director...

after M:I 5.... Tom Cruise should direct the 6th/His final M:I himself.

I remember Brad Bird saying that Tom Cruise is knowledgeable in

all aspect of filmaking.... and He have worked with the best of directors

ranging from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Stanley

Kubrick, Oliver Stone, Sydney Pollack, Barry Levinson, Michael Mann...

I mean who else have a better actor come director potential?

I haven't even listed the comedy directors he have worked with and all

the Mission Impossible directors yet

Evening happy.gif

Just watched Mission Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol (2011)

Nice.

Still...felt like it's missing something.

Something about the plot or team members...too thin.

Simon Pegg...always sees him as a comedian.
Kind of weird as an agent happy.gif

We'll see whether Ethan will bring new team members or not.

Wow. He scaled to the top of Burj Khalifa in MI4, and then this... he did do some other crazy stunts.

The trailer of MI5 was slightly underwhelming when compared to MI4. Also no Brad Bird as director. Here's hoping it turns out to be as good if not better than MI4.

Possibly one of the best action flick this year, trailing just a wee bit behind mad max. It's your pretty standard IMF existence in jeopardy kind of story, the difference this time around is the action scene really hits the gold standard. It's one of those old school filming where every framing and editing center on telling a story. Not to mention most of it is done practically. It's not your Michael Bay school of fast cuts, cgi orgy and gratuitous slo-mo.
During the elaborate assassination scene, each edit point clearly communicate the whereabouts of interest point and culminate into a satisfying crescendo. Given the onslaught of reboots and sequels, I have no expectation of a game changer action flick but just execute it properly. Rogue Nation did more than just a proper thrilling action movie. Outright it's better than Ghost Protocol IMO due to memorable action sequences and Rebecca Ferguson is one super bad-ass to watch out for.

Watched it today. Yup definitely one of the best action flick this year, i like the car/bike chase scene, damn the vroom2 sound of the BMW and superbike is really awesome, i think this is the first time i heard that kind of sound in a movie, felt so real. Overall good action as usual by Tom Cruise, 4/5 from me. thumbup.gif

I thought it was going to be a 'rehashed' been there done that kinda thing.

Besides the film seem to have quite a short post-production timeline and then on top of everything moved from Dec to August.

Actually it was pretty meh for me
Plots are kinda predictable and forgettable, villains had a great start, but as usual, total fail at the end
Action not too bad, but nothing new there yawn.gif
Dunno why, I actually almost fall asleep at the car chase scenes hmm.gif
and I did dozed off at one or two of the dialog scenes yawn.gif tongue.gif

Not much action for Jeremy Renner also, what a waste
Only thing that attracts me is Agent Faust wub.gif

3/5 for me yawn.gif

Hmm...was a pretty standard MI movie for me. How many times already they're gonna be accused of being double agent etc.? Action scenes were no doubt good, kinda wished they spent a bit more time on the plane stunt considering how much effort to shoot it. A good movie, but to be the best spy movie of the year it's gotta beat Spectre and U.N.C.L.E.

Overall it's a good watch but I still think the previous one was far more entertaining. This one didn't have much memorable action scene unlike the previous one with the breaking into the Kremlin and Dubai part. The plane scene didn't last long which is a shame. The jokes and cool gadgets are also lesser here for those who wants to know.

Interesting that Malaysia was mentioned. Didn't know they knew we existed.

The climax wasn't as action packed because they were trying to take down the big boss mentally instead of physically. Unlike the previous movie where each member is assigned to do certain things at the end and you get to see them do it, you don't see that here. Everyone just sorta appeared all together at the end. Not a big deal though because I still thought it was a bit of a surprise at the end because we didn't really know what their plan was.

Can't help but notice the big boss has damn big nostrils.

Overall, very fun movie and some part hilarious. I just feel that the film dragged somewhere after the awesome bike chase, and for all the build up, the Syndicate and Lane were lame

*
I agree the plane scene should be at a climactic scene. The movie has its flaws. I felt the intro was draggy but the story is good for a mission impossible movie. overall its a fun movie. 3.5/5

Rebecca Ferguson really steal the show... every scenes she's in were pretty good and memorable.

Its good to see that Tom Cruise is still going strong in this franchise. M:I RN came in close and i ranked it as the 2nd best in the whole franchise.

The movie is quite good. I enjoyed it.

But honestly, i feel tired with spy, agent related movie. After this, James Bond movie.

I feel that Hollywood run out of idea in making a new movie.

I'd rank the movies as such:

1, 4, 3, 5, 2

Thia one felt like a combination of the first and fourth movies, but not as good as either. All previous 4 movies were strikingly different in one way or another and this is the first time I felt that nothing new or different was done. It's closest to Ghost Protocol, but lacks the ultra slick and confident touch of Brad Bird. Still a pretty good and fun movies in its own right.

The score has some outstanding moments. Take the one below for example, when was the last time we heard a track that progressed its theme so elegantly in a modern action blockbuster? Thank you Joe Kraemer.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

Okay!

Fine!!

I am slow on this one!!!

I was away, no access to cinema, *grumble*, *grumble*, *complain*, *complain*... laugh.gif

The Good

I like the whole franchise, because, it is a rarity nowadays, with CGI budget going through the roof, this movie takes the trouble to go on locations all over the world. A rarity indeed. (Other then this only Jason Bourne and James Bonds still does it)

There is a story to be told. Seriously, "other big budget movie" (I am looking at you Wachowski siblings) don't forget to tell THE story. Yes, action sequences, CGI etc can give you a WOW factor, but in the end, if the story sticks in your viewers minds, you, my friend have done your job!!

For a 50 yo, Tom Cruise is STILL showing the youg'un, how it is done! Kuddos!!

Who the heck is Rebecca Ferguson and where has she been ALL MY LIFE!!!! tongue.gif

Simon Pegg, the ever dependable comic relief, gets serious here!!!

The Bad

Ving Rhames??? At KL towers??? When was this??? Or was it "stock shots".
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The Ugly

Sean Harris as Solomon Lane all I want to add here is Prosaic much?? laugh.gif

But I am nick-picking

I enjoyed this movie immensely.

I strong recommend you watch this.

Why are you still reading?? Go already!!!?!

Morning happy.gif

Some scene reminds me of the first one.

Fine twist in the end.

Rebecca Ferguson.

She has the features of beauty from the 50's and 60's movies.

Normally in James Bond's movies.

Legendary.

Sexy accent; the girl in the record shop too; "It really is you." happy.gif

Emilia Clarke (she's not in this movie) too tongue.gif

Lane's voice were so annoying laugh.gif

Never thought the day would come when even an MI fan feels Tom pushed it too far & would end up losing his life is he persists

Truly great trailer especially compared to 1st which was grim & sophomore

Stakes were already high in Ghost Protocol when IMF was disavowed

Rogue Nation actually framed Hunt as wanted fugitive while Syndicate attempts to infiltrate MI6 & UK

Just how high can the stakes be in Fallout?

While I do appreciate the raw grittyness Henry Cavill's moustache adds to the "assasin" character, I feel the trailer should've been cut in a way audiences have no clue about Tom & Cavill's standpoint. Or their agencies & agenda's that would've been rivetting watched on-screen

I liked how Simon Pegg was not forgotten. His mere preence gives a wiff of fresh air in the midst of action blocks

Y'know honestly what makes the past MI films great?

The direction, screenplay, drama, tension & characters that hold these films so well.

All which none of Bond films, or rather Craig's have. No offence

Give or take it might stabilise around high 70s but quite rare for summer blockbuster to receive such high score. Hope Vanessa Kirby aka Princess Margaret able to get more recognition as a few critics already hailing her a breakout star this time around.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

It has been suggested to me that I can be over- enthusiastic or overly-kind with my reviews or movies.

Believe it or not, I have been "dialing" down my enthusiasm, in my the reviews I write.

Having said that, I categorically label this my No. 1 movie of 2018.

I seriously cannot think of what possible movie, that is going to be release in the near future, that can knock this movie off this pedestal.

This is the sixth outing for this franchise, that seem to go from strength to strength (one can argue that the second outing is the worst out of all six).

There were attempts for younger and hungrier actors to take over the mantel (main male lead, Jeremy Renner) of this movie.

At 56, Tom Cruise seems.... unstoppable.

This movie is shot mainly practical. And I have to add, seeing what was presented on screen, the task is Herculean, figuratively and literally.

I cannot even begin to imagine how it was done, and the Cinematography Rob Hardy is as much an adrenaline junkie as Tom Cruise himself.

This fast paced movie starts strong, and never NEVER lets up.

The action sequence, oh my goodness, the next James Bond has it's work cut for it, if it wants to up the ante... And seriously, I cannot see how they can manage that...

People who reads my mad ravings here, may know that I am really NOT a fan of Henry Cavill, and have to add, I ABSOLUTELY love him here.

I'd say prime Pierce Brosnan would do it. Dude's a legit Bond who'll make Craig look like school boy next to him. Such was his charisma & elegance

This movie is good 10/10. I watched the toilet scene with jaw dropping reaction, damn! the bad guy is really powerful.

I have to hold my breath watching the ending scene, tension to the max . This is really an adrenaline rush action movie . Also got some touching moment when Ethan talked with his ex-wife.

There were many scenes from the trailer which wasn’t shown in the movie.

Example:
0:56 - 0:56 : dead military personnel
1:06 – 1:07 : Slamming of the baddie on the car
1:53 – 1:54 : Swinging during the fundraiser party
2:24 – 2:25 <- I want to know what happen to this scene!!! hmm.gif

That helicopter sequence is some cinema gold this year. Overall this outing kinda bring me back to the first M:I. A little more serious in tone and the convoluted double, triple betrayal. Kinda miss the whimsical precedent on Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. In terms of story craftsmanship still prefers Rogue Nation. All in all walk out of the cinema pretty satisfied with a big grin on me.

Too bad Jeremy Renner couldn't make it and alas Princess Margaret didn't have a more pivotal role.

Easily one of the best action films I've seen in years... considering I wasn't a huge fan of 'Rogue Nation', I wondered how this was going to be any better.

They managed to make the most MI film ever - the betrayals, the trickery and the relentless action are on a notch higher than ever seen before.

I watched it on IMAX - - and what a great decision! biggrin.gif Totally, totally worth it.

I'm glad they brought back Julia's character and Luther was there from start to finish.

That helicopter chase sequence.... thumbsup.gif No words to describe it. It surpassed my expectations...

Seems like McQuarrie has the action flick genre figured out - - pleasing both critics and fans alike, something rarely achievable what with the 'high standards' of movie go-ers today tongue.gif

The greatest gift of "Fallout"... has to be...

HENRY CAVILL.

His role as a baddie - - wow. Totally blown away. He comes across as a pissed off Superman that could punch through steel. He truly shines in this role. Nailed it to perfection.

And of course, Tom Cruise for pushing well above his age. You can really, really tell he has pushed himself here more than ever before. The stunts (which I assume were mostly Tom) were truly magnificent.

That bathroom scene. That bike/car chase scene. That helicopter pursuit. That ridiculously stress inducing bomb disarming moment. And a beautifully poignant moment with Ethan's ex-wife.

This is.. the best MI, hands down.

I bet that helicopter scene was filmed on IMAX because it filled the entire screen whereas other scenes had black bars top/bottom. This is the type of film that is worth watching on IMAX. And more so, IMAX 2D.

9.5/10

The gripes were possibly plot points - I get that they were trying to 'deceive' the audience, but at times you could get a bit lost. There were also some scenes that were quite dark (intentional or not), though it never really detracted from the action. I am nitpicking, still this is as close to perfection as you could get.

Just found out there wasn't a complete screenplay again like Rogue Nation. They have the idea of what high note needed to be accomplished and everything else is written on the spot as they are filming day by day. Guess you don't get to be an Oscar scriptwriter for no reason.

Since 2010, dude's been in Knight & Day, Ghost Protocol, Oblivion, Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, American Made, Mummy & yeah, Fallout

Mind you, dude puts his life on the line for all his films & MI simply has larger BO appeal

Why? Not a fan of Cruise? hmm.gif

Anyway, before I started watching MI I had no idea it's this good. Had some sort of prejudice that it's about them being an intelligence unit and stopping outbreaks or war from happening etc. Only after I've seen Ghost Protocol out of the blue, that I finally understood the attraction of the show. Truly enjoyed Fallout for its action and plot but my favourite is still Ghost Protocol thumbup.gif ...and can't deny that I was really happy to see Jeremy Renner lol.gif

I got no beef with cruise, I find him entertaining

Just that they had to ditch/kill off the entire old crew from the series and even attempted to make the lead actor the villain in the movie version

I watched the recent movies I did find them entertaining

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Now, this looks like a 300 million dollars production.

Kudos to Tom Cruise, for showing the industry how to spend close to 300 millions and having it show on screen!!

Tom Cruise seems to have conquer every movie genre, Action, Drama, RomCom.

The only genre he had fail to make an impact on it... Horror!!! sweat.gif

This movie is action pack.

Action pack to the gills.

Will four huge movies bombing at the Box Office (Little Mermaid, Elementals, The Flash and Indiana Jones 6) summer blockbusting looks, to borrow a term from the current generation seems.... meh!

Well based on what I had just watch, this movie may make 1 billion, worldwide. A true blue summer blockbuster!!!

It is NOT flawless.

The positives far exceeds the negatives.

I do not read up on movies I look forward to watch, so this movie had several surprises in stored for me.

There are two things that I may nitpick on, namely,

I enjoyed the experience of watching this movie on IMAX.

Since it is only Part 1, I wouldn’t say it’s the best but it has all the necessary ingredients for a “Part 1” type, though there are parts of it that just felt weak, lengthy and forced.

Personally, I felt that Rogue Nation and Fallout were far superior.

Especially Rogue Nation, to have the protagonist do unto the antagonist at the end of the movie, what the antagonist did to the protagonist at the beginning of the movie.

The most hyped up and talked about stunt i.e. riding the bike off the cliff?

Well, the silence in the theatre was unbelievable!

hanky panky not a problem, just too much violence n gun shooting

tat day I went GSC, the ppl there also dunno the real ruling

13 means above 13 only

only those P12 is parental guidance, got new ruling dy, but to them 13 category, as long got parents, kids can go in

Haha last time Hollywood more lenient

Indiana Jones at least the part 2 i think got G for general but include deep blood effects hence the creation of PG13

Only in Malaysia we further borderline between 12 and 13 which 2 me no difference pun laugh.gif laugh.gif

I know a lot of great action classics with PG13 that is non-MCU also hoho

The Final Reckoning has the highest highs and the lowest lows. It's teetering on the absurd Fast series tone and has a big exposition set-up to recap what happened in the previous movie. Once the action starts, it's the reason why we love these films. The submarine sequence and airplane stunts again reinforce McQ and Cruise partnership, the defacto reigning kings of blockbuster filmmaking. Nolan can't even come close to them when delivering high octane action scenes. It's okay this not the best MI movie but you can always go back to the previous one you like the most. For me Rogue Nation still the best.

Mission may have lost to stitch as revenge of 2002 where animated stitch lost slightly to Cruise original movie but still an epic win overall against pre pandemic numbers laugh.gif rclxms.gif

I think we can finally say its back 2 full normal after running away from 3rd pkp 3 years ago
