Luckily you never have to make a insurance claim or brushes with the law. Otherwise you will really get to know whether it's ok or not.

here i obtained this from my former college website. but this is for melbourne.

"Holding a valid student visa allows you to drive in Victoria (for an indefinite period) provided you have an overseas licence which is current and valid and it is in English or is accompanied by an English translation, or you have an international Driver’s Permit."

translate your license (use a translator from NAATI. you can find a translator that will translate your M'sian driving license to English on the NAATI website) and it will be valid till the day your Malaysian driving license expires. say your M'sian driving license expires during your stay in Australia, you can get a new license from M'sia and do the translation all over again or just get an Australian driving license.

or do we have to start from scratch again just to get an australia driving license?

In most states, you can convert your Malaysian licence to a full Australian licence. However, you must still sit for the theory and practical test (no need to go through P-plates). But if you do that, they will punch a hole in your Malaysian licence to invalidate it. I have a hole in mine and I am wondering how I explain to JPJ when I want to renew that eventually wink.gif

$4 for translating a Malaysian drivers license at the High Commission. Probably cheaper than NAATI. It does say "No charges for student. Kindly include a certified copy of your student ID" through.

The WA DPI didn't punch a hole in mine though... neither did they punch for Singaporeans' ...
so effectively I have two driving licences, Malaysian and Australian. .

the australian government is not allowed to damage or confiscate your driving license from your home country. this is due to the fact that the drivers license is property of the government. be it malaysian or singaporean.

soontheam - Looks like VIC and NSW do things differently then. Over here, we are only allowed to have 1 valid licence. However, if you have your PR and been around for over 3 months, then your Malaysian/Singaporean licence is invalid and in that case they will not invalidate it.

panda-man - Incorrect. You are in Australian jurisdiction and they can do whatever they want with it, including destroying it or confiscating it. It is no different from seizing a passport of yours to prevent you from leaving the country.

More accurately though, the licence is your property. However, if you tell them they don't have the right to punch a hole in it because its not theirs, the response will invariably be "you're not getting your Australian licence if you don't let me invalidate it so have a think about it and come back when you've decided what you want".

why should they destroy your other driving licence?........there is no rule that says one can only own one driving licence.......

in any case, oz allows dual citizenship, so there is no problem with someone having aussie and another country's passport........so i don't see what's the issue with a mere driving licence.....

It really depends. You're not transferring form 5 to form 6 but doing post graduate so I don't think it'll matter. For example, a Phd is mostly research, so it'll be specific on the topic you choose it won't matter if it's in Antarctica or in Somalia. The only difference is your mentor(and facilities). For masters, some masters are by research, in which case it'll be as above, some are by coursework. For coursework, the Uni website should have a list of subjects you have to take(or choose from) and so the best is to visit the site and have a look. For Honours, I think most UK Bachelor's degree comes with Honours already, right?

For anything else, it depends, I guess. What are you planning to do in Australia?

Btw, VicRoads(the Victoria drivers' license authority) did punch a hole in my New Zealand license when I converted. Why though? I don't know. Didn't bother asking then as Australian license can be used in New Zealand(I think?haha).

Nice new thread ... I'm staying in Perth, Landsdale ... I'm currently in Wanneroo Senior High School . Got a friend is here too but she's currently in Canning College . Still trying to adapt myself in the new environment . Any tips that I should remember or take note during my studies here ?

I have a question here : Year 11 got a lot of test or exams ? My friend told me that got a lot of exams and such ... We also have to change our subject every semester . How true ? I did some internet searching but didn't get my answers .
