Wow...Which University or College are you going?

QUOTE(Grimm @ Dec 27 2009, 03:35 PM)
Hi all.

I'm studying in Australia. I got my Samsung F480 from "3" from over there.

I'm here for 3 months holiday, and want to use my phone here.

Problem is, I was too kan cheong to use it, i inserted Hotlink SIM card inside and when requested for a code... I quickly typed in my PIN code.

...
...
...

Actually the phone was asking for an unlocking code. I kept entering my PIN code and kept wondering "WHY IS THIS BLADY THING NOT WORKING? DON'T TELL ME I FORGOT THE CODE!!!! ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!" *press press press*

Then I failed 3 times. Then I called my Australian service provider and they said "Uh oh, you have just permanently locked your phone. You should have called us and asked for your unlocking code. Now you are GG-fied, we cannot do anything, your phone is PERMANENTLY LOCKED."

WTF.

I wonder if anyone can rectify this problem for me? I'm not sure of handphone terminology here. Is this considered Unlocking a phone? IF SO, can my phone be unlocked by anyone here? AND ON TOP OF THAT, will I be able to use an Australian SIM when I go back in Feb?

*My Australian service provider claims that only Samsung will be able to do anything with it and the matter is out of their hands now*

What should I do? *cries*
That phone is my baby sad.gif
*
Hmm...
I am not quite sure what it meant by permanently unlocked but I do have the same problem as you last time. I subscribe for a phone from optus and unable to use Malaysia sim card. So I went to Lowyat PLaza and pay RM 10 for people to unlock it for me and they did that in 5 minutes. Maybe you can just go and try your luck in Lowyat Plaza and any Mobile phone shop.

CHeers, don't worry. I think it is just the software issue of the phone. No big deal

ISIC card for the extra luggage weight if you're flying with MAS for outbound and inbound flight from and to Australia.
By default if you show you student card or confirmation of enrollment you will get 25 kg for student(to and from Australia), if you want to get that extra 5kg for total 30kg then you must show your ISIC or Mas Grad for flight to Australia.
From Australia student card will do for 30 kg, but to Australia student card is useless to get 30kg max since the MAS staff(s) at check-in counter will insist that you show your ISIC or Mas Grad since they get commission if you have to pay extra for luggage someone told me thus you have to pay for that extra weight, happen to me this year.
Alternatively if you have no ISIC or Mas Grad then i suggest you just carry it as hand luggage since MAS don't really weight hand luggage, i saw a guy brought 10+ text books and another dude bringing two boxes of instant noodles to the cabin to Australia, be warned from Australia MAS weight your hand luggage(s).
For ISIC regardless when you apply they have a fixed expiry date according to calendar year which start end of March, regardless of when you applied.
Anyway it's worth it, i would rather pay RM100 for the card than pay RM150++ per-kg.
Anyway YMMV.

Ask and you shall receive...

Read through the Australian Immigration website regarding visa issues... it's a tedious read, but it's more accurate than any of us could provide... just in case we accidentally give you outdated/incorrect info. They change rules all the time.

My post is regarding MAS only.
I ask the lady at the MAS office at Adelaide when i booked my ticket to go back home this year about getting 30kg for flight to Australia from Malaysia, she told me student card will only get 25kg, only ISIC or Mas Grad can get 30kg max.
And for your info, i boarded MAS to Australia from KLIA late Feb. and i even showed the MAS staff my student ID(i didn't have ISIC or Mas Grad) , she refused to give me an extra 3kg, since my luggage total weight was 28kg, and the flight was not even half full.
Anyway i'm just sharing my experience for those who are embarking to Australia for their studies next year, the rules might changed but it's better to be prepared and be informed.

Maybe it's just MAS, or maybe it's the KLIA lady that's being difficult. biggrin.gif Never had a problem with SIA.
Most of the time COE or student visa would suffice, but oh well. Call them up and check perhaps...

What turf! Nobody flying AAX? I'm going there first time to study next year and i'm taking AAX since I got super cheap tickets. Like rm300+ 1 way only tongue.gif

My mum and I each have 20kgs so i think should be enough right? >_<

Btw, do you guys think I should get a printer here and bring it over or will it be more feasible for me to buy a printer there.?

And if you don't mind..can you please suggest some items that I should bring over other than the necessary clothes/toothbrush/toothpaste/shampoo/stationery?

edit:// Oh oh. and what exactly is this ISIC card you guys are talking about?? Besides to get more kgs on MAS

Thanks!

No, printers and all can be bought in Australia and they are priced reasonably, sometimes even cheaper than Malaysia. The only computer related stuff you should bring is your laptop, other than that, it's not really worth carrying all the way there. Other items would very much depend on you personally, but if you can get yourself the required textbook list prior to departure, it'd be a good idea to go look around the bookstores here and see if you can find any textbook. A textbook that costs AUD$100 would probably cost you RM100+ here, hence the big difference.

Oh, and obviously, bring enough cash to last you for at least a week or two. You will have to spend some time setting up your bank accounts and waiting for your bank draft/tt/etc to clear, so just prepare a bit more cash to be on the safe side.

International Student Identification Card (ISIC) is basically a student card that entitles you to various discounts around the world, and getting more baggage allowance is just one of the benefits you get. However, I do agree that it is kinda useless because most of the time your uni student card is enough, but no harm getting one since it doesn't really cost much anyway.

Printers are dead cheap over there. Like really dead cheap. Australia is not some ulu place... they have competitive prices and latest stuff all over too.

Btw thanks for the replies on my phone problem. I'll have to give lowyat a try.

But I'll be at a lost to explain to all the chinese speaking lala-chais who won't understand my predicament. Gah.

I did try AAX before... What you pay is what you get. Many people have complained about the weird sliding seats which do not recline enough, but it's actually not too bad. Just make sure you sleep all the way through, or have your laptop/DVDplayer/mp3player to get you through the journey. Not worth paying for the in-flight entertainment set.

Items wise.... you've got all of them. Bring bank drafts over instead of large amounts of cash. 20+20kg is more than enough, I never used up my 40kg from SIA before, and if you want to use all of them... do what most students do - bring local food (nescafe in particular) and shampoo/soaps/shower gels. Don't bring A4 paper... they are freaking heavy. sweat.gif

Printers = buy in Australia, then stock up on cartridges every time you're back in M'sia. Cartridges are bloody expensive here.
Textbooks = just grab a copy from the library... most libraries have long term loan copies available... then zap those portions you need and leave out the rest.

ISIC card = http://www.isiccard.com.au/
Pretty useless as the discounts offered will probably make you spend more on non-vital, entertainment items... but it's only 25AUD so it won't hurt to get one. I didn't have one nor did I ever needed one. There are many more ways of getting discounts for certain items, while your passport or an age cert from the police is a good way for age identification. You probably won't buy liquor or visit casinos that often so it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the heads up man. Mine is a hardlocked phone and not softlocked. Means only the manufacturer, or somebody who is able to re-set the locking codes can do it. I think la. That's what a professional phone unlocker guy told me @_@

Anwyay, looks like i'll have to spend a few hundred bucks.

Guys, never ever try to unlock your phone without a code lol. After 3 times, your phone becomes scrap metal like mine :s

Yes, for MAS the rules changed. Either you booked with your student card or MAS GRADS card which we needed to apply fo the student fares whereas last time you just need your Letter of Acceptance then you can purchase the student fares. A little bit hassle but applying the GRADS card sure save you alot of moolah.

I been told that I get 35kg for my luggage needs. I made me reservation through the ticket counter in KL Sentral and posted my application of MAS GRADS card. When I get my card then I will be able to purchase the reserved seats at student fares.

It kinda surprised me that we don't need to place any deposit or whatsoever in order to reserve the tickets from MAS. Heck, I even asked the counter girl twice "Are you sure we don't need to pay a cent in order for us to reserve the seats?" "Are you confirm the slot is available when we receive and show you our GRADS card?" and she said "YES". Oh well, thumbs up for that! rclxm9.gif

One more question, any cheap/cheaper/cheapest medical checkup you guys been around Subang/PJ area? Standard should be RM100 yea? Thanks a bunch.

Rgds,
sykz

that has always been the way airline tickets are booked...........before the era of lcc and internet bookings........

they give you a deadline, before which you have to issue tickets and pay up.......and that can be about a month before you travel.........and you can change your mind, or cancel before that without any penalty...... smile.gif
