N82 V1 Thread -> [Nokia N82 Official Thread]

Nokia N82, the latest multimedia computer optimized for photography, navigation and internet connectivity. With the tools to discover the places and moments worth capturing, and the capabilities to capture and share them instantaneously, the Nokia N82 offers photography enthusiasts an enhanced camera experience.

Discover, capture and share
The Nokia N82 enables you to explore your surroundings and find your way with navigation and routing; document your adventures with the high quality imaging capabilities; and instantly share your experiences with one click upload to the web.

Featuring A-GPS, 5 megapixel camera, Xenon flash, Carl Zeiss optics and internet connectivity, the Nokia N82 also incorporates all the multimedia computer features common to Nokia Nseries. like its predecessor the Nokia N95, the  Nokia N82 is the latest epitome of a truly converged device that is not one thing but is many.

Discover the world
The powerful A-GPS and preinstalled* Nokia Maps help you explore and locate new places, whether in another country or just around the corner. All Nokia N82 standard sales packages come with a free voice guided navigation trial*, and you can purchase additional features, such as city guides and longer subscription to the navigation.

With access to more than 15 million points of interest, you can locate and navigate to the most interesting sights, bars or restaurants wherever you are. You can also send map excerpts and routes to friends by MMS or save map screen shots to the gallery.

Capture your experiences
With a 5 megapixel camera, powerful Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics, the Nokia N82 delivers remarkably vivid photographs, even in low-light conditions. Fast camera activation, autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp, fast reloading between shots and DVD-like quality video capture make it a truly convenient and credible tool for capturing and telling your life stories.

Thanks to the 2GB microSD card in the standard Nokia N82 sales package*, you can store up to 900 high-resolution photos or up to 84 minutes of high quality video on the device.

"The Nokia N82 gives the best ever camera and navigation experience in one stylish premium device. Just imagine what kind of possibilities this will open up and how much richer your every day life experiences can be! The sophisticated design and glossy looks appeal to men and women who are conscious of their style and want to impress with the latest in technology," Satu Ehrnrooth continues.

Share your stories
With high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and one-click upload to communities, the Nokia N82 makes sharing your experiences and discoveries easy. When viewing a picture or video, simply one press of a button starts uploading it while you carry on using the device for other purposes.

Or you can impress your friends with multimedia slideshows - complete with music and effects - on the high resolution display or on a compatible TV.

The Nokia N82 comes with the new content driven 3D multimedia menu and includes a convenient orientation sensor that rotates the user interface automatically between horizontal and portrait mode. For quick and easy access to entertainment content, the Nokia N82 also supports the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games** and Nokia Maps.

The Nokia N82 is available now in key markets with an estimated, pre-tax, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 450, announced by Nokia on 14th November 2007.

The Nokia N82 seems like the next flagship of the Nokia N-series of multimedia-oriented smartphones. Although it looks pretty much the same as Nokia N95 specs-wise, it outmatches the current heavyweight champion with a xenon flash and automatic screen rotation.

First off, we present you the Nokia N82 photos. We gotta admit the N82 is not the prettiest of handsets but it looks alright - especially having in mind it's loaded with features. You can't see silvery Nokia phones often, but the Nokia N82 is one of them. Some of us would have preferred black and hope there's a black version coming in the future (you didn't hear us say 8GB, did you?). (AND INDEED THEY DID MAKE N82 BLACK biggrin.gif)

A lot has been said about the Nokia N82 keypad and the way it resembles a Sony Ericsson rip-off. We won't comment on that as the world's leading manufacturer should know better than copying a competitor's solution. Our guess is that the N82 keypad is a revamped version of the Nokia N91 one. The Nokia N91 had an awful keypad, but with the N82 it's nothing like that. The keypad is far away from being flawless, but it takes little time to get used to.

The N82 comes with a 2 GB microSD memory card included. The side keys are comfortable and the stereo speakers are both located on the right side as with N95 - obviously you are meant to watch videos and listen to music in landscape mode.

The 5 megapixel camera on the back has a mechanical lens cover that turns the camera on automatically. The Nokia N82 is the first Nokia handset to feature a xenon flash. The N82 xenon flash is the first worthy adversary of the Sony Ericsson K850 xenon flash that has been dominating ever since its first introduction in Sony Ericsson K800. The N82 looses some points to K850 as it doesn't have a LED light for video recording.

We conducted an improvised xenon flash test by shooting with Nokia N82 and Sony Ericsson K850 in almost total darkness. It seems that the currently reigning xenon champion has found a match in the face of Nokia N82.

An intriguing feature of the Nokia N82 is the auto rotation of the user interface. It's not lighting fast but it's OK. The general speed of the user interface is identical to the one of Nokia N95 8GB, which is fast enough.

From wikipedia N82 Wiki

The Nokia N82 is a smartphone announced by Nokia on November 14 2007. It is part of the company's Nseries line of smartphones which features the N-Gage gaming platform and the Nokia Music store (where available). The N82 runs Symbian OS v9.2 based S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. It has a 5 megapixel camera and is the first Nokia phone with xenon flash.

The N82 includes a built-in accelerometer, for video stabilisation and photo orientation (to keep landscape or portrait shots oriented as taken). The N82 has automatic screen rotation as a standard feature. The latest available firmware version is numbered v30.0.019 and is dated July 23 2008. U.S. releases of the N82 do not support U.S. 3G frequencies (850 and 1900 MHz) and Nokia has not announced plans to release N82s in the United States which do. As a result, applications and features that require the N82 to connect to a 3G network cannot be used in the United States.

The China market version of the N82 has a different hardware platform and has the WiFi and the UMTS radio removed (I.E. no 3G support). It also has a different product code (RM-314 as opposed to RM-313) and the firmware is not compatible. It can be easily identified by the lack of the line saying "WLAN scanning" on the idle screen. This version is for mainland China only and the N82s in Hong Kong and Macau are standard APAC RM-313s with the 3G and WiFi.

The N82 camera makes a sound and flashes a red LED near the phone's flash while taking a picture. Although the sound can be changed and the user gets to choose from four different options, it cannot be turned off in many regions including Asia and North America. This feature was embedded to protect people's privacy. Some users found it frustrating that the snapshot sound could not be turned off.

The European and Chinese firmware are exceptions to this - they will mute the shutter sound when the mobile is in silent mode. Setting the Warning Tones to Disabled in settings also removes camera shutter sound.

hello every1. i am planning to get n82 black most probably after CNY in hopes of bigger price drop by then. am i kidding myself you think?

is there a difference betw black vs white/silver version aside from color? saw from page 1 there are differences? price wise no difference from my research.

i'm planning to get 5800 for wife as she is not so much into camera but more to phone design n big/touch screen. i find that it's so unfair that 5800XM ori set price is almost the same as an AP set but for n82 the price gap is like RM300 or more! damn zitron.....

was reading thru 5800 thread. those guys post like there's no tomorrow!

QUOTE(yokelian @ Jan 14 2009, 04:00 PM)
hi there, I'm using the N82 black colour. I just discover that there was new FIRMWARE release, that is V30. Now my firmware is V20.

So i just want to ask, if I'm upgrade to V30 did my phone all those contact, application, games, sms etc will LOST?

And after I upgrade it, got any pros and cons? Like cannot see those chinese words?

Thanks for reply me.....
*
if u already previously have the chinese words (asia firmware- one sign is that u cannot turn off camera sound), then u will still have it

read the changelog on the first page icon_rolleyes.gif

ur phone won't lose contacts, applications, games, sms but is safer to do a full backup of yr phone memory contents on yr memoy card and/or pc before upating thumbup.gif

SMS Scheduler enables you to define multiple messages, save and schedule them separately

QUOTE
You would like to send an SMS when the price for sending it is the lowest or maybe free of charge? You need to send a birthday or season's greetings and don't want to forget about it or maybe you just need to send SMS to person in a different time zone in times when he/she doesn't need to wake up to read it?

Than look no further, SMSScheduler is the simple but yet powerful SMS scheduler for S60 devices developed in Python that lets you handle your message correspondence in a timely manner, it enables you to define multiple SMS messages to multiple recipients, save and schedule them separately.

You can prepare all your SMS messages, notifications, reminders and greetings in advance and schedule one-time or recurring delivery. You do not need to initiate a Send/Receive in order to send the scheduled messages but you must of course keep application running in background otherwise it will not be able to send messages automatically at the specified time.

No more reminders needed, never miss birthdays, anniversaries, and holiday greetings, just schedule repetitive messages at daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly intervals.

Application is pretty small, easy to install and easy to handle. Each time you add a new SMS message, you will be able to choose a particular date, time, recurrence, recipient and leave to your phone to send message for you. The SMS will be sent automatically at the specified time without any user interaction!

The application is developed in Python
and of course requires the latest version for proper work.

This is the really handy application but there is a plenty of room for improvements and first of all it definitely need a better built in SMS editor and possibility to exit the application without need to leave it active in the background constantly.

When hang white screen, what do you do ? Switch off ? Take out battery and put in ? Wait long long ?
hmm.gif
I suspect your N82 is faulty, better send in to repair or claim warranty. Take picture to keep as proof when hang/white screen, or record video if can simulate it.

What is your firmware version ? v10, 20 or 30 ?

hi hi from singapore for awhile

yes the battery will drain faster under dual mode than GSM only

also I think his problem could be an open application/game or somethin.

I kno if u leave the radio/music player/ngage game all night the battery could die very fast icon_rolleyes.gif

make sure u don't have any open apps Litueva sweat.gif

I ended up buying a used N78 instead of N82(hooked up with 2 very hassle seller[FFK to sell me aih]) -.-..but am very happy with it really.. the speed, battery life, performance...its packed!

Yesterday with full battery, I on wifi for straight 9 hours and a half n lost 3 bars, which is acceptable for me because once I finish working, I straight charge in car... torrent is fast as well.

But the downside is that sometimes my hp always auto-restart when Im about to launch an app, ppl say it's when got incoming text message... issit can be fixed? really annoying de -.-... and upgrading firmware, issit easy? jz use Nokia suite can upgrade bo?

n 1 last thing, I still can't get my hands on Video player.. I tried Core player, but phone said, "Cant install app from untrusted source" blabla...=x

Hope to get some helps from sifus2 here since N78 thread is so dead...TS jz started 1 n ciao ..aih

Yes, you can update ur firmware through NSU if there is a new firmware available. You need to sign the app before install if it is unsign.

dual mode means the phone will prefer 3G network over GSM when it detects both networks are available ?

If Dual-Mode, and you are always in 3G coverage area, then the battery usage difference is not that much.

However, if you travel a lot, and the area of coverage is mixed with GSM & UMTS, then when the phone is locked onto GSM, it will constantly try to search for UMTS signal to lock. This will take up more battery life than a little.

e.g. Underground car park, tunnel, home coverage, inside home.

hmm.gif
I suspect your N82 is faulty, better send in to repair or claim warranty. Take picture to keep as proof when hang/white screen, or record video if can simulate it.

What is your firmware version ? v10, 20 or 30 ?

I just have a Flash idea... about Flash Mob. E.g. set a date and time, e.g. KLCC concourse centre court, point at the dome, and at the right time, all of us N82 owners in one go set off our xenon flash together several times and then disperse. What will happen to the security guard there to react ? laugh.gif

SanDisk 8GB micro-SDHC about RM70-85 nowadays in KL. For the price/size, I say it is very worth it. rclxms.gif

Since it is CNY coming, you can try ask your friends (Chinese sure go back hometown) to help you buy at Low Yat Plaza. smile.gif I believe it is definitely cheaper in KL here than Kuching.

this morning used the GPS with Garmin to go somewhere I never know before, so it's considred the first time to use the GPS seriously, very satisfied with it, the weaker GPS module inside N82 isn't a problem as it always can use EDGE/3G to connect to AGPS server

and yes... how to increase the volume of the Garmin voice ? press the side up button like no response

n82 proven can use 16gb card which is the max now
32gb is the largest microSDHC but it's not available in the market yet
we think tat n82 can support 32gb too
as for 32gb onwards i.e 64,128gb cards..those are more advanced technology
mayb n82 canot support

i duno bout n78 but i think it's the same since it's newer than n82

Woi, wrong thread lah. Mau kena whack ka ? If every N82 owners here throw our N82 at you, can die you know ?  laugh.gif  Or we altogether use our XENON flash at you, buta seumur hidup...  rclxub.gif  laugh.gif

Wakaakaaa... I'd like to throw an n82 at someone...but not mine ;P It's nice to have a phone that can be ur defense weapon also... When u're really really desperate, simply throw n82 at the thief and knock him out XD.

I just have a Flash idea... about Flash Mob. E.g. set a date and time, e.g. KLCC concourse centre court, point at the dome, and at the right time, all of us N82 owners in one go set off our xenon flash together several times and then disperse. What will happen to the security guard there to react ?  laugh.gif
*
SUPER BRILLIANT IDEA. COUNT ME IN.

QUOTE(dattebayo @ Jan 17 2009, 03:00 AM)
DNA brand has some bad reputations here
*
YES. I have the worst ever memory card nightmare with this particular brand. Banned forever in my list. Keep corrupting and corrupting, and the DNA salesman refused to rectify the problem on the memory card, instead he blames the fault on my pc's memory card reader. I can't tell you how ridiculously ignorant the man is to me.

---By the way, am I like the LAST PERSON to know there's a V5 thread already??? I'm still in shock. 7 pages only baru I realize. OMG I'm ancient. XD

u nid to wait for the GPS signal to bcome green only can use..or in the 3D map, wait for the "seaching for satelites" to bcome "Ready tonavigate". sometimes u nid to wait quite long, but sometimes wait a while den the signal is green.
if can't, u may need to disable the 'Use Attached/Built-in GPS' , and re-enable it again. usually the signal will b alright after u re-enable the 'Use Attached/Built-in GPS' . But it is NOT 100% work.
well, i duno y it will like tis. but i guess it's related to the weather.

if u do hv this file already, check ur codes
they might be wrong

After you save it, rename as sw.unl, NOT sw.unl.txt

Make sure the notepad only have code, no space, no other things

Edit: Windows might hide the extension already for you, so if that's the case go to options in explorer and uncheck the option of hiding the extension in the name.

Recheck your code in sw.unl, ensure that sw.unl along with the unlocked map is in the garmin folder already. You should've done what u needed to do already...maybe there's just some typo..or wrong code..and so on..

Not sure what exactly u mean by the 5 box...did u mean the signal strength indicator at the top left corner there?

Make sure you go outside where you can get a clear view of the SKY.

Not in any room, or any place where there is obstruction above ur n82.

AGPS is only used to help the N82 to lock upon the satellites, once it's locked on, the rest is just between the GPS and the satellites

the "abit" u mentioned is just a few cents, which is of no point to even want to save that kind of money

Hi guys,

I want to buy this phone next month to replace my N73. Actually I was aiming for 5800 XM before for its touch screen function and cheap ori price. But after a lot of thinking and a few readings, I'm not satisfy with 5800 picture quality (camera) because from my experience, phone camera is the only function that I use regularly other than music and radio (of course call in/out functions sweat.gif sweat.gif ). IMHO my N73 give better picture than 5800 so, it more to downgrade, instead of upgrade.

So now I'm planning to buy an N82 AP set because my budget is only RM1.2k. Warranty might be an issue. So, when I'm dealing with the seller, what should I check first? I means is there any common problem with this phone? Because, 5800 has earpiece issue, how about N82?

N82 in general has much lesseeeeeeeeeeeer issues that 5800 XM. It has sturdy lens cover, it's almost impossible to accidentally slide open the lens unlike N79, the battery cover is also solid as rock flex.gif

the downsides are it's lack of an LED flash, small buttons, slightly bulkier, and weaker GPS receiver (but with A-GPS, it's no longer a problem]

Why we need LED flash? I thought Xeon flash is enough?

I probably will not use GPS or A-GPS.

N82:
1) You can live with smaller screen (and non-touch screen) compared to N95/N95-8GB
2) You can live with candy-bar phone (not sliding or flip)
3) Small keys on keypad
4) Short battery life (0.5-2 days), depending on usage
5) Excellent camera + xenon flash, for h/p-based-camera
6) Good processor, although now is very lagging to me
7) Symbian S60v3 OS
8) Loud speaker not that loud
9) Music using headset is above average only
10) GPS to capture signal is so-so only. Once locked, no problem
11) Cannot stand on its side

Added on January 19, 2009, 2:58 pmLED is useful, if you use it as torchlight. Xenon (not intel xeon tongue.gif ) cannot. Also, there are articles about the xenon-bulb break if N82 fall down too hard on the ground. But so far, I did not hear any particular case about it.

Wait till you play with GPS, especially if you drive or travel around rolleyes.gif

3) Yup, I see that N82 has unique keypad. I believe not suitable for fast sms.
4) 0.5 - 2 days only? sweat.gif Alamak... sometime I travel 2-4 days and forgot my N73 changer but have no problem (normal usage with camera, no mp3). So, if only for receive/calling, how long it will last?
5) My main reason for N82.
6) When your phone start lagging (how old your phone)? How long it takes to change to camera mode?

GPS certainly will help my wife as she always lost when driving to town. sweat.gif

Ha..ha.. my mistake. Wrong typing. Xenon not Xeon.

3) Not really. Initial first week take me time to get used to it. Now, I can type fast sms, a bit faster than my previous flat keys N80. Maybe 2.56% faster tongue.gif

4) I receive about 5 minutes talk-time calls. About 50 sms a day, each sms takes about 20-30 seconds to compose with LCD on. Total 5 minutes GPRS/3G. My phone can last 2-2.5 days.

If I use double/triple of the above, it can last 1-1.5 days only.

If play games (diamond twister) non-stop from full charge, 3-4 hours only sweat.gif

6) My phone lags is the Messaging. Too many sms stored. Now is 3000+ in my folders, and another 3000+ in sent items. sweat.gif

3) 2.56% shocking.gif ? How you calculate that. Ha.. ha..

4) I see, so mostly around 1-2 days. Should buy spare charger and put in my traveling bag. Because I always forgot my charger but luckily lots of people using Nokia biggrin.gif .

6) 3000+ of sms. For me, >200 already serabut. Always cleaning up to below 200.

So, if less sms stored means less lag right? I thought the whole application lag like my N73 (80% full memory).

3) Seriously, my SMS speed has been improving from day to day, this is my 4th Nokia h/p. I don't see a problem with N82-rice-keys. It is just a matter of time to get used to it.

4) I have 2x AC charger, USB charger and car-cigarette-adapter charger sweat.gif All fully covered, not including friends.

6) I moved all my Inbox and Sent Items SMS into My Folders. Want to test how much SMS can store before the phone really hang tongue.gif

If less applications installed, and less files in phone and memory card, the better performance. It is like a newly formatted and installed PC. Very fast.

The gmapsupp.img is the img file, the borneo map is kinda hopeless, I tried it last week and everything in short forms..

may I know what's difference between soft & hard reset ?
*
there's stg in n82 called User Data Preservation (UDP)
soft format - wipes out the application/themes etc installed in the phone but the contacts and sms-es are still there (thx to UDP)
hard format- wipes everything..juz like a new set that you got when u purchased the phone

clear?

it depends on the nokia server. sometimes it downloads vy fast (up to 100+Kbps). sometimes it keeps on dc. try your luck la..
hacked phone means u can install some cracked and/or unsigned softwares. besides, you can access to the system folder..which are in ur phone memory folders (Eg: sys folder, private folder, etc.) u can modify your n82 thru the sys folder, for eg: u can change ur operator logo (MY MAXIS, DIGI, etc.) to coloured operator logo. u also can remove those functions in standby mode (share online, WLAN scanning, Calendar entries, Search: Internet and My Content).
However, v30 firmware still can be 'ahem' yet til today.

if u wan ur N82 being 'naked' and not being scratched, u can buy a product called 'Invisible Shield'. There's a thread in lowyat.net.
I'm currently using it. Very satisfy of the product. However, it's quite pricey.

I think this is the common problem of S60 hmm.gif

besides that, the miss call and SMS alert screen also too simple, can't know the SMS sender or caller without pressing additional button, SE is good in this, their event menu provide sufficient info on the screen

I couldn't agree more. Even my old sch mobile SE T610 also will show you the SMS sender. Nokia really lack of this function.

Did you follow step by step producer?

From Nokia:
QUOTE
Installation instructions:
First, reboot your terminal.
Second, if you haven’t done it already, install the latest Nokia Internet Services Support Package into device memory.
Third, go to the "Application manager" to find and uninstall the "Nokia Contacts Service Support Package".
Fourth, install the Phonebook Extension Manager provided in the conversation installation page. Finally, install the conversation application associated with your model of Nokia S60 terminal.

I try with my N73, work perfectly. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

jus now tested Batman.mp4 demo from 5800 on N82
N82 can render better than 5800, but feel kinda total lost... sad.gif

Video >> 5800 got pixel crack (on bottom of the screen) and N82 more smooth (oni minimal different).
Color N82 softer. 5800 more bright.
Finally, 5800 bigger screen is winrar the real blow to N82 (great for movie)

Audio >> 5800 speaker louder but N82 more clearer... N82 still lose overall on audio performance.

Batman.mp4 playing on CorePlayer is a joke... lag like hell. one word > unwatchable...

btw this is the only moment i feel Nokia's RealPlayer is worthwhile. Lag-less... and beautiful

i tried to backup all my data and format my 8gb microsd.. then copy back all the files.. those applications still missing.. i checked on the applications manager... detected.. but the icon.. " starter " is missing.. after that.. i try to reinstall back all of them.. finaly can use back.. i think is the system files got problem.. not memory card problem..

there's a way to avoid that

which is to make an exact copy of all the folders in the old card, into the new card, either using windows explorer or command prompt, all up to u

haha..ok.. no need 1 week to give comparison actually, after using tube for 2 days, i really like it soo much, because its also fast like n82, touch screen really good, speaker demm good, lcd display really lovely, surfing internet...alsooo demmm fast.. big and easy on ur eyes, but i also feel susah skit in typing..just using it for 2 days..hehe..like n82 also..we suffer for their tiny cute keypad rite ? laugh.gif

so overall tube can pawn n82 easily in term graphic, easy on hand, on eyes, look more trendy and young... but no worry for camera n82 still the king, n82 video capturing also the best, when i snap pic with tube..make me miss my n82 terribly laugh.gif

It's not really a new design as I've only swapped the covers from the black to the original Chrome Silver and White back. Will do.. I'll try get hold of a digital camera to snap some shots of Xeros (the phone). Please give me some time allowance as I don't have access to a digital camera at the moment.

You need put new "unlock key" into that new 8gb memory card. As last time, your previous "unlock key" is only applied on your previous memory card.

Hi all biggrin.gif

Anyone use Quickweather Premium ? I use that but yesterday I accidently did something about the connection settings.

Last time the connection is default, when I try to update weater forecast, it will prompt me with all available connection (GPRS, MMS, all access point and WLAN) ... then i can choose from there

Yesterday I play with the setting inside quickweater, and i choose one of the accesss point as default. Now whenever I wanna update the weather, it will shows error if access point not available
I want it to prompt the WLAN thingy as usual ... as default

Hope there is a way and I dont need to reinstall the quickweather

I don't have the quickweather app. But I encountered the same problem as urs but mine is with web browser last time.

Try opening Nokia Web Browser>Options>Settings>General>Access Point>Select "Always Ask".

Hope this helps =)

Thanks Eve2211

My webbrowser did prompt me for connection available instead of keep on using the default even its not there.

But this doesnt apply for my QuickWeather. Sounds more like the application bugs or problem rclxub.gif

those are dirt on the lens i assume
dead pixel looks like a black dot and can be seen under all situations
except mayb the particular screen if full black..then it would be harder to be located

Which country code has the firmware for V31 as I've tried keying in 0566149 in Nokia's website and the latest for this country code is still V30.0.019
