Entirely up to you - camera prices don't fluctuate much unless there is a new model for that category of camera released.
Canon 1000D, sell off kit lens, bump up budget a bit more and get the 18-200mm (if you're looking for an all-rounder lens)

*
he wants a camera for 2-3k and you recommend him a 2k lens!
why not just add 55-250 IS to it?

Ok, let's see.

1000D kit: RM2k. (with accessories, etcetc)
Sell off kit lens: RM450 (because new, but no box makes price lower)
Up to here: RM1.55k

Find 18-200 taken out from 50D kit: RM1.5k - RM2k

Total spending: RM3k-RM3.5k

I'm suggesting this because he might want an all-rounder lens. Also, don't forget Sigma 18-200/Tamron 18-200, both around RM1k (used) or RM1.5k (new)

Canon EOS 400D has 9AF points and Canon EOS 1000D has 7AF points.
So, what are 2AF points missing in 1000D, are those important?

2 AF points can be a big deal to you, or it won't be a big deal to you.

It all depends on the person behind the camera. Even the proest of pros can use a PnS, so for us learners, I'd settle with 7AF first, later on upgrade to a 40/50D whistling.gif don't say my name if you do get poisoned whistling.gif laugh.gif

Type of camera: DSLR
Budget: RM 2K-2.5K
Location: KL
Preferable brand/camera model: Looking at canon 1000d or sony a200(twin lens)

is it possible to have these for 2.5k?
canon 1000d + 50mm f1.8 + tamron 55-250mm or tamron 80-210mm?

The tamron's mentioned above worth buying?

Why do you want to go for the Tamron when the Canon 55-250 is so low priced?

It all depends on your bargaining ability. I believe the lowest you can get for those lenses and the kit for Rm2800.

If you bargain well, that is.

More or less the same. Could be more expensive, could be cheaper.
But don't forget, the Canon has IS and superior optical performance as compared to the Tamron.
The Tamron suffers from severe CA and PF when used wide open. And I'm not joking about this.

You know what? I'd suggest you stick with the kit first before investing in other lenses. Learn how to use your kit lens first and then only consider upgrading.

What I think you should do is,
Get the kit, and a flash if you want, but don't get the 50mm prime yet.
The reason is because different people have different shooting styles.
Take me for example, I feel that the 50mm f/1.8 is too long for me, so my 50mm prime isn't really utilized. I'm more of the wide-angle shooter.
So, I'd suggest playing with the kit lens first and with time you'll more or less find out what kind of shooting style is more suited for you. smile.gif

Looking for a slightly more advanced camera to replace my aging Ixus 750. Interested in the more advanced features of DSLRs but not ready to use such bulky units, as I often take pictures while mountain hiking, etc where large, heavy cameras are a big no-no. Currently looking at Panasonic DMC-LX3. Any sifus here have any recommendations?

If not, please, state what you're going to use the camera for mostly.
Thanks WandererX for the suggestion!
An all-rounder is what I'm looking for. The thing was I was reading some article and it said it was okay to jump a notch. but if i were to spend 3-3.5k, wouldnt that mean i'll be better off getting a 40D? Im not sure of the pricing so pls excuse if im going waay beyond my budget.
hmm, also i find it rather tedious to buy and sell and buy again... can i get what u recommended at one package?

Try Panasonic FZ50? Old model, discontinued but can still find in some shops. There's a used unit in Penang for around RM800.
It's got mechanical zoom lens(internal telescopic) + ETTL hotshoe, so you can also get a Olympus flash. Quite decent movie mode also.
Not sure about other models but I've always loved toe FZ50. It has brought me wonders and places.

Not a big deal if you are a pro photograher. For me it is a deal since I am not pro. Anyway, it is not so important to have 7 0r 9AF.

Yes, go for the LX3, it's best for everything except superzooming.

As I can see you're going hiking and you'll probably see good scenery up there, the LX3 will do you good.

1000D, <Rm2k, D60, <Rm2k.

Both are equal in terms of specs, pros and cons. You'll have to make the decision yourself as it is very hard for us to answer a subjective question for you.

Doubt you can find a new kit. A used kit, yes, but you'll get the 18-55. 18-200 is an expensive lens...
