It shouldnt be taxed as it's only a pc, but it is subject to hand carry out thru the checkpoint e.g. (by car, bus).
If its by parcel or shipping, then u'll be taxed about 10% and a Sirim & Energy of Commision approval is required... smile.gif

I got this info according to this website

anyone who actually imported goods worth RM500 above got tax after 15th October 2010 do comment!

QUOTE
In order to boost the local tourism industry and to make Malaysia as a shopping haven for branded goods at competitive prices, the government proposes to abolish import duty range from 5% to 30% on about 300 goods favoured by tourists and locals, with immediate effect from Oct 15, 2010.

Heres the source : http://www.nbc.com.my/blog/?p=230

Added on December 24, 2010, 5:13 pmHere's another interesting update for you guys!

Abolishment of Import Duty on Tourism Products and Daily Used Product
To promote further Malaysia as the leading shopping destination, it is proposed that:
i. import duty of between 5% and 30% currently imposed on handbags, wallets,
suitcases, briefcases, apparel, footwear and hats be abolished;
ii. import duty of between 5% and 20% currently imposed on jewellery, costume
jewellery and ornaments be abolished; and
iii. import duty of between 5% and 20% currently imposed on toys such as dolls and
small scale recreational models be abolished.
To reduce the burden of the rakyat on the cost of daily use products, it is proposed
that:
i. import duty of between 10% and 20% currently imposed on talcum powder, face
powder and shampoo be abolished; and
ii. import duty of between 10% and 20% currently imposed on bedspreads, blankets,
curtains and table cloths be abolished.
These proposals are effective from 4.00 p.m. on 15 October 2010

Hi, I was shopping on eBay US. Let say if I buy a RM800 golf club. Will I need to pay import duty of 10% (i.e. RM80.00) once it arrived at the Malaysian Customs. Delivery Charges must be excluded, rite!! smile.gif

Well, for purchases less than RM500, import duty is not applicable, but does that apply to all kinds of items?? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Anyone knows... Thanks. laugh.gif

Person who bring the stuff via commercial flight, usually the Kastam will not tahan if the stuff bought are in a small quantity and unwrapped. If you kena tahan also, there's no tax for phone and camera. Only GPS kena tax. While phone and GPS required you to obtain for SIRIM approval. In your case, which is personal usage. You have to apply for SIRIM Special Approval.

Hi guys,
I am the noobest noob in custom tax and I have 3 questions:

1) I dont understand the rm500 limit, if its rm500 and above we gonna get taxed. This rm500 limit is per item or the total amount of the stuffs that we imported?

2) Im planning to buy a LOT of leather handbags and wallets for gifts and the price definetely would exceeds rm500 for each item. Can I be exampted from the Duty import? Do I still need to pay the sales tax?

3) Im planning to buy a LOT of T-Shirts and Jersey made from cotton. If I were to take off the price tag and folded them and put them together with my own used t-shirt and didnt declare it, is it a good or bad idea to escape from any tax? I could say these t-shirts are my own shirts that I bought from Malaysia.

Hi. Newbie here. I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I currently live and work Japan and want to send most of my things to Malaysia. I'm hoping to get a job their or in Singapore in August.

I'm leaving Japan in June to go to England to do a training course in July, and then will fly to Malaysia. I'll be sending my things to a cousin's house in Malaysia for storage. I'm a UK citizen.

I'll be sending mostly books, clothes, a computer, monitor, snowboard, and other bits and pieces.

Nothing I have was bought within the last 6 months.

What kind of duty/taxes am I looking at? I've emailed Malaysian Customs, and it's slow going. I don't know what forms I need, what the tariffs/taxes/duties are, etc. I've asked, but as I've said, it's slow going with me emailing them, them replying, me emailing them again because they haven't been clear or haven't answered all my questions...

I've also read somewhere that I have to be in Malaysia to receive the items. Is this true?

Also, I'm supposed to get an Import Permit from the Energy Commission for my electrical devices. Where do I get that from and where can I find the forms? I can't find anything on the internet.

I will be sending my things either via a private shipping company (by sea), or via the post office (by sea/surface mail).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

i plan to import clothes from china, more than 500, but i wonder what if i separate the shipment by a couple of days into less than 500 at a time, would it still be taxed? what does it mean by 10% sales tax anyway?

Thanks.

As you know there are many email in and out at Kastam. You need to fill K1 form. Yes by law, electrical devices are required to obtain Suruhanjaya Tenaga or Energy Commission approval.

i want to import a video camera from China
the size of the camera is smaller than a handphone size
no wireless and no bluetooth, just video camera only
the price is less than RM500

will I get any import duties?

Camera is tax free. As long there's no wireless connectivity, there will be no SIRIM approval. thumbup.gif

You have to buy the software for up to date tariff finder. I bought it. Quite expensive.

I just need to check electronic circuits boards and electronics.

A little like those "electronic kits" that you buy and solder.

i'm not sure. but what I understand is, for EMS/USPS, it's matter of luck. if kena stop, u have to go to sepang. if DHL/UPS/Fedex, they will calculate the tax and then charge u when delivering to u. u pay cash lor + RM25 handling fee (or something)

sigh that sucks. ebay sellers use mostly usps to deliver. Okay let's say if i use Fedex or DHL (since marshall official website offers either DHL or fedex) and assuming fro ur statement, they will send it to my door but with extra charges am i right? if so, how much will either one of the delivering services charge me? will they notify me how much they will charge before they deliver or only notify me when those headphones arrive?

I'm afraid of hidden charges that will amount to 50% of the items' price or worse, more than the items itself o

Better don't combine taxable and non-taxable items in one parcel, it confused them and they likely tax you all. I have got that experience once, you can argue but they have the final say.

it wont be taxed, but it will be "inspected" if no proper description are written down. and u'd get charged for handling fee or something. just write down "USB DIGITAL PHOTO FRAME" - "COMPUTER ACCESSORY CATEGORY"

I think so la

How about old goods? My parents (and, perhaps, me too) are moving to Malaysia. So we'd like to bring along amp, speakers, DVD recorder, a 2006 Mac Mini, printer, etc. Will they bother us? I mean, the things are already old, and we don't want to sell them. Yes, if you are moving back (my Mum is) you are allowed to bring your household goods with you, but that seems quite troublesome, and would they accept it if we fly there and bring just a few items with us, i.e. not use a container?

What about DVDs? I'd like to bring along my DVD collection (I'm pretty proud of what I think is an exquisite collection of arthouse and indie movies, and it was expensive after all), but they are all uncut, and even if they were, Malaysia is extremely conservative (some movies that are okay for children here are something like NC-17 in Malaysia). I don't want to get into any trouble or get them confiscated.

It's still risky if you didnt unpack those thing and still them in original packing. High value item custom will definitely knows.
If you unpack everything I am sure that's going to be fine.
Ok depends on your luck many people have jalan to bring in many, but really have no idea how they do that.

You are planning to import Flexible LED which is under HS8541. There is no import duty require. The sales tax is 10% (if the price more than RM500). The sales tax is a consumption tax charged at the point of import for certain goods. For your information, Flexible LED (and any other LED lamp are) is not a control item yet in Malaysia. For time being, it does not need any approval. If you still want to get your product approved, you can do it on voluntary basis. However, it is recommended for your product to be approved in order to get consumer's trust.

Bro, purchasing above RM500 is subjected to tax. Normally they will only retain large packages but you seem unlucky.

hey there: I am wondering how much do they charge for the following items:

A computer with a 3D Graphics Card
A DLP 3D Ready Projector
Keyboard and Mouse
25 Pairs of 3D glasses

I am going to import it on company's name and is there any sales tax involved.

Many thanks for your time.

I don't know how you asked them, but maybe you should just ask them "is there any import duty and sales tax for batteries bought and sent in from US."

That is what I did everytime I have a query.

Never mind, Amazon does not ship that item to Malaysia. Damn! So many items that can't be ship to Malaysia due to whatever legal restriction they're saying. Even Adorama.com also does not ship the item to Malaysia due to security precautions and fraud prevention. >_<

Useful thread. let me give my experience with the local kastam.

Digital Camera and lenses : imported a few already from US, UK. None were taxed. There was only once it was held in KLIA customs, but went there to open in front of the customs officer, confirm no tax, only need to pay a RM18 fee (#($*&#*&^&&$#)

iPhone : no tax confirm, but you will need to go to apply for GSM permit from Sirim in Shah Alam. RM100 for a permit of 3 same models. (Must only be used in the same shipping, means you cannot buy 3 from different buyers)

(a)
For future attempts or intention for commercial reasons, when exploring to bring in more or bulk goods into M'sia,

and perhaps ridiculously cheap, as to have a margin for business purposes,

feel free to PM me should you require more options.

[ read: if u intend to do / start a business while capitalizing on strengths in low-cost importation goods, "Handling Custom" authorities, and mediocre taxes n stuff ]

(b)
It can be pertaining for industrial lowest-cost bulk cargo importation via sea-shipping,

or very fast Air-Freighted cargo, even if it is just one small mini parcel.

Like many of the examples earlier, just a phone, a few phones, just a few iPads, some accessories, etc.

[ read: also suitable for the mass public, or individual shopper, who just wants to buy 1 item, and get it fast, hassle free, peace of mind, while waiting at home ]

- ..... basically to avoid all of the above issues from the start.

Hi lads!

I'm going to order some protection, luggage system and some tuning parts for my bike.
Can you tell me what will the tax be?
The approximate value is about 2500 EURO
It can be divided into several parcels with less value in case it'll lower the tax amount.

Need some advice here. I saw on the 1st page that leather bags are import tax free with 10% sales tax. But the thread has not been updated since it was created on Nov 11 2008. Are any changes to this ruling?

What is the tax if my purchases (RM) are:

1) RM 432

and

2) RM 1,440

Exactly!

As all the previous and earlier posts mentioned,
build a business with the right Shipping Partner, let them handle their forte and you concentrate on yours.

In other words, and for business purposes: you'll need a Shipping Partner.

i think it depends on the items, if it's taxable, then the custom officers will tax you but as a general rule, items <rm500 will not be taxed unless the custom officers think it's under-declared. nowadays, they are expert in detecting these, especially when the items are branded goods.

Hi Dreamworkz, i just got taxed for the first time buying computer parts, need your expertise and experiences. Hope you can help me.

firstly, may i know the code in http://tariff.customs.gov.my/ for computer parts, cannot find any computer related...

And, here my case, the items i bought is total around RM 750 include Fedex postage, it is computer SATA controller cards, from http://www.addonics.com/. but the seller declared as vague description as "control or adapter unit for automatic data processing machines" and caused custom to put it under electronic. Even though i already ask the seller to declared as computer parts earlier on.
And it taxes me RM 270 which is already 30% plus.....

So, i would like to know if it taxable? if not, what can i do to cancel the tax?

Thank you.

update (1):
- my item was taxed with tarif code is 8537.10.900 , which is "chapter 85- electrical machinery and equipment and part thereof sound recorders and reporducers, television images...." . Way off what the items is.
- called Fedex clearance center. wait for them to open the packages and check as told...

Hi there,

My personal advise, get Fedex to examine the goods and let the Officers to verify on the classification, based on my experience this should go under direct code of "Other units of automatic data processing machines" 8471800000 = FREE Taxes & Duty
If necessary go your self and clarify to the officers, its the best thumbup.gif

Hi Dreamworkz, thx for the advice, will do so, look like "data processing machines" is mean computer in taxes.

Added on October 27, 2011, 12:30 pmHi Dreamworkz, need your advise again.

The Fedex called me, after some talks, Fedex tell me that they was try to declare as 8471, but it is Custom that change to 8537 because of the word "control". They also tell me that if i want to claim again, i need to pay them first, then go to Custom to complaint, is it true?
Couldnt i go to custom first before paying? Because i afraid pay mean i agree already, and they will not do anything later.

Can anyone care to tell me the tax rate for dvd and electronic devices that cost over rm1000. If I could ask then to gift warp it would I be able to get though custom? And if get taxed would services like FEDEX or DHL help me handle the procedures? Would really appreciate if anyone who is really familiar with this would tell me, thanks.

Just 1 dvd and 1 electronic... and each cost RM1k+ but I'm not shipping them at the same time, so yea back to my question

Edit: Oh it turns out the electronic console only cost rm800+ but I think there's still tax impose, just I dont know how much...

Based on my experience, if one item in your shipment is held (e.g. beauty products which require pharmaceutical approval, and electrical goods which require permit application), the entire shipment will be taxed, even if it's below RM 500. Oh, also, do not consolidate more than 3 packages in one single shipment. Otherwise your shipment will also be held and taxed.

Sometimes, I'll just send my stuff to Singapore (especially beauty, electrical, and high value items like branded handbags) and go collect them myself. It's cheaper and less hassle free than dealing with customs. The Singaporean rule is pretty simple - as long as it's below SGD400 per shipment, they don't care how many packages you've consolidated in that one single shipment or what you bought - as long as it's not taxable and not illegal.

10% sales tax include your item value + shipping cost. If using 3rd party agent to do the clearance for you, might involve extra charges e.g. RM 20 for DHL.

Thank you so much, so I can assume most famous international services will help me declare for the tax impose just I will have to pay them back when it delivers to me right? So both the DVD and electronic device will have 10% tax if >RM500? Would they know the amount if I order and ask the dealer to gift warp it?

Anyone can advise the procedure to import electric bicycle categories as "motorized vehicles" under HS Code 87119000 into Malaysia?

I have checked with SIRIM, no approval for the bicycle as is powered by battery, approval needed only on the charger.

I can't seems to find this code on http://tariff.customs.gov.my/

Thank you so much!

Which agent are you using? If DHL they will do clearance for you. If PosLaju you need to handle this yourself or appoint an agent on your own. But I use to do this myself, and it's pretty fast and easy. Unless you are from KL, and need to drive all the way to KLIA lah.

Er.. anything to do with power supply, you'll need to apply for a permit from Unit Merinyu Eletrik. It'll take about 2 weeks, and DHL will charge you RM 70 or 75 for the application. But actually the application is free, and you can do it yourself. Just call the UME, tell them what item, where its been held, and write an official letter. If you meet a kind officer, he/she will even get your permit approved in less than a week! But once your item is held by customs for these permit application purposes/inspection, they'll impose the sales tax on you even if your total is below RM 500. But it all depends on your luck also lah. I've safely got thru a a huge garment steamer and a number of tablets, but got held up on smaller items like hair dryer and mini sewing machine. Sigh! It's all a matter of luck.

If you send items to another country, the tax will be imposed by the receiving country. You need to find out what's the current limit for personal allowance in Australia.

I've bought something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PGQM1M shipped through Amazon twice. No issues. It's battery-operated with charger.

I think DHL and FEDEX will help me do the clearance right. A Nintendo 3DS will also have to apply for a permit? then i'll get charge for about 10% of it's value? My place also far from KLIA so if can i prefer not to personally declare the item, thats y I'm planning to use these services

Will a television be taxed or imposed by SIRIM approval if shipped from Canada?
It will be brought in as household item, because I bought and used it in Canada before ship to Malaysia.

If your base charge is less than the amount taxable, it would be advisable to split up your shipment. Much better than the hassle of dealing with customs delay + additional agent charges.

Really? No matter how much the total price? Need to apply for electrical permit or not?

EDIT: How about Kindle? Is this taxable? I contacted Customs directly. First reply I got, it says no - but need to contact SIRIM about the permit. Second reply I got, they say Yes. I'm also confused.

anyone can help me?
I've ordered clothes from ASOS.com....

And the total cost was around RM500-600...
I've received an email, tax ( i guess) to pay around RM120 (RM 80 for duty, RM 40 for admin fees) to this company (DPX WORLDWIDE SDN. BHD), or else I won't be able to receive my parcel.

Anyone encountered the same event as me before?
Need help on what to do.
Thanks. smile.gif

Check whether is it a con email or not first. As far as I know, ASOS usually sends their parcels via normal mail / registered parcel and if you're supposed to pay for import tax, it should be handled by Pos Malaysia lo. Also, if those clothes are for own use, I think you shouldn't be taxed at all right? Not like they can say it's not for own use (unless you went and bought 10 of the same thing la hahaha)

I never shopped with Asos before, so I'm not sure which method of shipping are they using. Were you provided with a tracking number? If yes, you can check. If item is held by customs, it'll usually have a "Clearance Delay" status.

Nowadays they don't care even if you say "for personal use only". I've been taxed several times even when my total purchase + shipping is less than RM 500, and the item I buy is only 1 pc per design per size. Just a matter of luck.

I'm trying to bring in some new automotive parts for a classic car.
Safety belt - 870821 ( 30 %)
Gear box - 8708400 (25%)
Steering - 87089400 ( 25%)
But http://tariff.customs.gov.my/ is a bit unclear, what's 870899190 which attracts 5% and 870899110 which is nil.

less than RM500 won't be taxed for sure, even though it is categorized as a taxable item.
so every time when u purchase something overseas just ask the shipper/seller to declare value cheaper than RM500 to get away from tax.

If import toy doll/figure worth around US$400, what are the charges, yeah? Item sent by USPS and now detained by kastam. They ask to bring invoice and go to LCCT Pos Malaysia to pay and collect. Ask them how much I've been taxed, but they cannot say. Shipper say got put amount on the box so why ask me to bring an invoice? And if it's usually 10% for toys, why couldn't they just say that? Thinking of just appointing their Pos Malaysia agent to deal with it and pay the RM50 for handling rather than go to LCCT.

Advice?

But if I am appointing a pos Malaysia person as my agent to collect the item, then they still need to collect invoice from me? Damn pai seh man... I am trying to book an agent with kastams now also they never pick up the call. Lol!

I too experienced the same problem. Have been buying toys from overseas years and it is the first time for me to ken a custom withholding my toy. Was asked by pos Malaysia to pay rm50 to claim the toy on behalf. That itself has not even counted the tax charge. The value of the toy is usd258. So, if 10% tax charge is applied, then I have to fork out another rm100... Damn!

Do you think by engaging outsider other than pos Malaysia can 'persuade' the tax charge to be waived? Sure pos Malaysia won't ask for any discount since they charged back to back to us.

Just to share..

I received my package from UK..via Royal Mail..the retailer sent them on the 15th Dec..so i guess it's pretty fast.

I bought clothings worth 170 pounds (RM800+)..was worried that it might get taxed but the retailer was smart enough to write the value as 30 pounds..or maybe i'm just lucky.

Good luck to everyone on our parcels!

less than RM500 won't be taxed for sure, even though it is categorized as a taxable item.
so every time when u purchase something overseas just ask the shipper/seller to declare value cheaper than RM500 to get away from tax.

Sounds good, what if i get a handphone from oversea and declare as gift?
What are the possibility of getting thru custom without tax and SIRIM thingy?

Hi
Apologies if this question has been asked before but wondering if I can bring 2 designer handbag tax free?
It's meant to be for personal use and the value is exactly RM500 in total.

Newbie here,
I had pre-order 2 japanese anime bishoujo figure that seperated into 2 package from a japanese site, cdjapan.co.jp recently.

The prices which including the shipment fee (via airmail) are USD69 (RM180) and USD88 (RM268) respectively.

Will I get charged by any taxes?

Any one more things, will the figures that I bought will counted as nudity and being banned?
Figure pictures and infos:

As long as is is lower than RM500, normally one figure in each box is save from tax. I think should be ok for these two figures

Sorry, I have questions to ask.

How about skincare and cosmetics product?
Will the custom impose any tax? If yes, by how much?

there is new regulation on importing cosmetics skincare fragrance..just applied this year..u need to get pharmaceutical approval for all listed under cosmetics.if u buy like 1 - 2 units for own use best way is u to go to customs ,let say at lcct..go there take the item to famasi there and say that its for your own use..u buy outside because its cheaper..they might release the goods..but if its too many its hard to say because they need notification notes to release the goods..and notification notes only provided to license distributor..this regulations just applied due to too many people buy skincare cosmetics online that containts high chemicals ..

Now even toys are charged duties. I just purchased a FFX Bahamut figure for $60 and I was charged for RM 48.05 for it today.

I don't know how much is the percentage but it should be around 20-25% of the item value...

does this mean that we cant send cosmetics from overseas? its not a matter of taxes?

i recently bought an order from sasa.com, about rm200 with 4 items, and i got a warning from the MOH saying that it is an offence to import meds/health supplements/cosmetics without license... but my order is for personal use. can i justify this to the customs?

Hey guys, here's something to share.

I just called to the LCCT custom, they said you can buy 2 pair of new shoes, 3 pieces of clothes and 1 handbag (all non-dutiable), if exceeded will be charge 10%. The rule of "not more than RM400" has already abolished! For more information, you can contact

1) Malaysian Royal Customs
Level 3, Main Terminal Building,
KLIA
Tel : +603-8776 6575
Fax: +603-8776 6617

2) Malaysian Royal Customs at Cargo KLIA
Tel : +603-8775 2379
Fax: +603-8787 4061

3) Malaysian Royal Customs at LCCT KLIA
Tel : +603-8775 2593

4) Malaysian Royal Customs at Pos Malaysia KLIA
Tel : +603-8787 1054
Fax: +603-8787 2718

I've tried to call to their HQ but please don't waste your time. The guy who answered my call didn't event know the rules and regulations and referred me to the contact above~haha...

Hi,
I would like to inquire about import duty and tax for buying computer games from US and shipped to Malaysia.

The computer game comes in a box that consists of DVD, game book, usb drive. Lets say price is USD 70. Plus shipping fee, it should not be over RM500.

1) Will I still get taxed for send computer game (box)?
2) Will I get taxed since it's not over RM500?
3) What if I plan to buy 3 units of the same item, which would cost more than RM500 after conversion rate from USD. How much would they charge me?
4) If I send the item in 3 separate orders (on the same day) but to the same ship-to address, will they combine the items (which makes it over RM400) and incur import duty/taxes on me?

Hope the you guys can help out before I order them! Thanks.

OK I just received all the items below at a single shipping but in 4 different boxes, no tax at all. luckily.
The shipping description label at "Baby Item", so i guess baby item is not taxable in 2104 Code

Hye guys,

I'm staying in Japan right now and my friend ordered a helmet since there are a bunch of choices of helmet here & cheaper than Malaysia too.

So, if i buy a helmet for him and post to him (in Malaysia) using EMS.

Will the item arrived safely infront his doorstep? Will he has to pay any tax or whatsoever?

Anyone has experienced buying a helmet from overseas? Need help here

Urgent Question:

I intended to purchase hot water bag from china to penang via alibaba with total amount roughly Rm5000, will the tax and duty apply? one more question to ask if 5 percent import tax and 10 percent sales tax, that mean total of 15% of tax on Rm5000?t

Any respond to my question is very appreciated as I have no experience to make this kind of transaction before.

ordered some clothes online, total value is around RM390 with free international shipping.. i do not understand why it'll be taxed and Fedex is too efficient & they just pay off the tax, around RM70....

i called them up & they said that the value is more than RM500 inclusive of shipping... WTH!

According to the takrif, toys[scaled model and figurine] have nil on import tax. So does tax apply? And what how much would they charge for RM680 goods?[exclusive of shipping]

sad.gif Can i just lie about my valued goods to the custom then say "settle at here bah" and then pay %valued goods? Would i get caught?
First time buying online.

Another silly question. I'm living in Sabah, so i assume can pay it at KK Airport?
Thank you.

I want to ask...

If the items that I am importing are<RM500, CONFIRM 100% no tax or MAYBE got tax but lower chances?

Also baby items confirmed 100% no tax?

generally speaking, items < rm500, usually no tax (no guarantee though cuz it's up to the custom officer's decision). However if u import branded goods like coach bag and declare < rm500, they will suspect and open ur box for inspection. Also if your parcel is big, higher chance of getting taxed. these are from experiences, may or may not apply in all situations.

Some of the baby items are taxable, like walker/stroller etc, but i do know no tax will be imposed upon baby food.
If you want to make sure whether it's taxable, u can check through this website --> tariff

hope it helps.

hi guys...
thanks so much for the above info.
i have few question to ask.
currently i am buying iphone 5 32g from ebay.
the sales amount is USD900.
and its shipped using fedex. apparently its already reach sepang.
and its status in fedex website turn into clearance delay - import.
so i am guessing i might get taxed.
may i know the tarrif code for cell phone in the tariff website?
or need to enter what word to search?
cuz i with phone it didnt show cellphone or mobile phone.
how much will i be tax? 10%?
the seller didnt declare any amount on the package.
so it will be tax how much? tax upon the retail price?

Will be held by Pusat Merinyu Elektrik. There's some process to it which you can DIY instead of getting the agent to do it for you ($$$). A kind customs officer will tell you what to do. Did you check your voltage? Malaysian voltage is 230-240v, common US voltage is 120v.

If you buy from Amazon, it's easier. They will already calculate the import tax for you, and bill you beforehand. You'll get the figure during the checkout process.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oops sorry, just saw that you mentioned you'll be using 3rd party shipping service. For 2000USD, your shipment will definitely be held. Am not sure about the tax, but you can always call your local Customs office for more clarification. I usually do that before purchasing.

Anything with power outlet will be held for inspection. Unless of course your purchase from China, which strangely they are not even bothered to stop you.

By the way, less than RM 500 limit means price of item PLUS international shipping cost ya...

If you buy an used amplifier, i think you won't be taxed.
For a new one, you should prepare the 15% import tax.

I bought an use amplifier from US, around RM1200 including shipping cost but no tax at all.

Hi guys,
just to share with you on how the duty/tax is calculated. Assuming you have in mind that RM500 and below can avoid duty/tax.
It is based on your CIF value.

Meaning:
C = cost of product, as declared in invoice
I = Insurance, which usually is 2% of your product value
F = Freight cost, which is a cost which is fixed and used by customs. You can get the table from them.

So for example, you are buying a USD100 value item and kena tax. You might be wondering, isn't it no duty/tax if items are below RM500?
Well, depending on the weight of your shipment, it translate into the value of the freight cost.

So lets say your freight cost comes up to RM300, from customs table.
Plus RM320 from your product value. (USD100 conversion).

Total is RM620. and remember that little 2% value.
So definitely more than RM500, which means your items are taxable.

How much tax/duty? well, refer back to the customs tariff webpage.

Also guys, remember apart from duty/tax, there are other requirements such as permits/import license, SIRIM permit, AP permit, health ministry permit, filem permit, etc etc..also remember, if M'sia is able to produce the item locally, and you import those things in, you will get a high duty/tax.
For instance, you are importing rubber products. get it?

Hope this helps.

Wow what a great mistake buying directly from the seller in USA who posted the item from their factory in HK. My item was priced at USD249.00 + FREE FedEx postage. Boy was i wrong, this was the most expensive option. Should've either bought from ebay and gotten the seller to price it as gift or bought from a reseller even though their prices are absurdly high so high its the same as mine. Below are the calculations i'v received from FedEx hope it makes sense to most of you out there scratching your head as well

The commercial value is USD249.00.

FOB value is : USD249.00 x 3.0775 = Myr766.30
1% insurance : Myr766.30 x 1% = Myr7.66
Customs Freight : = Myr113.00
Total shipment value = Myr886.96

Duty Import (15%) = Myr886.96 x 15% = Myr133.04
Sales Tax (10%) = Myr886.96 + Myr133.04 x 10% = Myr102.00
Total Tax = Myr235.04

So yea my item is 766.30 rm and i have to pay 235.04rm as fcukin import tax, thats blody hell nearly 1/3 of the item price.
It makes the need for a 'middleman' in the processing depot much more viable if your gonna deal with 1000USD or more than that

Hi,
For DVD, tax/duty is just one portion to worry about.
There is actually another permit which must be obtained. As I know, DVD if its movie, must have permit from FINAS or something.

cheers

Well, hard to say. each day there are like thousands and thousands of shipments but how to check all right.
smile.gif so it boils down to the customs system to capture based on value or weight. maybe its luck, and no further requirement.

What i mentioned earlier is the proper process.

Confusion on duties tariff...

I was wandering what is the difference between ASEAN+ China duties tariff with the Harmonised ASEA tarif and Perintah Custom tariff.

For example, Corrugated Boxes....under ASEAN + CHina tariff = 0 %

but under perintah/harmonised ASEAN tariff got duties one...

Which one should I follow?

Does someone order trading cards before? I read quite a lot of comments here saying if you buy less than RM 500, it wont be taxed, wondering is this 100% for sure wont be taxed ?

and after RM 500 will be taxed for how much ?

I plan to buy a carton, and will cost me RM 2200-RM2800 (60,000yen++)

I checked the Malaysia Import Duties in lowyat forum, stating playing cards are 5% import, 10% sales, so 15% will be charged?

you will mostly get taxed.
The logic is simple. You are bringing in stuff from overseas into m'sia. as a owner of a country, im sure you would like to know what comes in and out.
and if the item is for commercial purpose, meaning you want to sell it and get profit...guess what..i want a cut from this as well.

this is where tax & duty comes in...get it?

If the 20pcs of apparels are not for commercial purpose, meaning you want to wear it..then you will need to explain that to the customs. They are like "diraja" in this part. smile.gif

Anyway, you can always check if your items are taxable, as some items are relieved from being sales taxed/duty as well.

By right, yes. Anyway, it depends which postal/courier service you using, the size of the consolidated postage and your luck. It should come with a tracking number? Keep an eye on it. A bigger size postage and using UPSP, fedex would likely attraction from Customs and taxed. Speak from experience. Cheers

Hi Pal,

Thanks for the prompt reply, its just that the watch has an integrated gps module in it, thats why i was wondering if it will be labled as watch. Was also aware that gps system needs some SIRIM approval and my watch standing something in between a watch and a gps is a bit confusing. Anyway thx for your input biggrin.gif Really appreciate it

Should be tax free according to the HS Code (recheck it @ http://tariff.customs.gov.my).. some customs officer is corrupt enough, like to imposes tax to the items that are not taxable...most important you need to know exact HS Code for the items you like to import.

what does this mean??

14. Non-dutiable. Computer cables are dutiable at 30% import tax and 10% sales tax. Modems require an approved permit from Telecom Malaysia.

The thing is razer uses FEDEX, they didn't hold the item but imposed the tax. Could it be because it exceeded the RM500 threshold?

Maybe the Fedex courier used by your friend has uses wrong HS Code, because not all computer related equipments/accessories are tax free, you may ask M'sia customs via email (ccc@customs.gov.my (Monday to Friday)), they will give you exact explaination.

I think yes.. but if possible, ask your shipper to enter the right HS Code for watches (in waybill, which customs will refer to determine whether the items is taxable or not), like I did.. HS Code for watches start with 9102.XX.XXXX, learn the HS Code first in tariff.customs.gov.my to avoid from 'kena goreng' dengan customs officer.

Nickel Metal Hydride battery (HS Code 8507509000) is subject to tax @ 20%+10%=30% total. No tax imposed if under RM500. If you still get taxed although it's confirmed below RM500 (price+shipping cost), you can apply for refund @ Royal Custom 'Cawangan Perakaunan Hasil'.

I just purchased 4 small items of toys (miniature railroad hobby stuff) from Japan weighing less than 300g with a total cost of JPY2960 (equivalent to MYR91) and postage of JPY900 (equivalent to MYR28) which brings the total cost on the invoice to JPY3860 (equivalent to MYR119).

What puzzles me is that I just received a call today from Customs saying that my parcel has been detained because they suspect that the contents are subject to tax.

I thought that items below the RM500 threshold are not subject to tax? Or is there some hanky-panky going on?

And if they are subject to tax, which HS Code would it fall under? Is it 9503009900/9503005000 as well?

sometime, toys is subjected to tax which is only 10% even it's under RM500. The HS Code maybe 9503004000 (models toys/recreational toys/others). You may call customs for clarification

Thanks! I went to have my parcel clear customs at on Friday and my items did not get taxed at all. I think it must be the item description on the customs declaration form which the seller filled in as "Model Parts" followed by product code instead of just plastic toy. doh.gif

Hi, I am ordering some badges and ties from UK, total cost (+ shipping) is around RM630 but that is due to high shipping charges. Without the shipping charges it is only RM400+.

If I get taxed by Kastam, is it a tax calculated on the entire value (RM630) or just for the items (RM400+) ??

thanks

Hi, I am ordering some badges and ties from UK, total cost (+ shipping) is around RM630 but that is due to high shipping charges. Without the shipping charges it is only RM400+.

If I get taxed by Kastam, is it a tax calculated on the entire value (RM630) or just for the items (RM400+) ??

thanks

it's not worth to buy cheap items from overseas if it's high taxable items smile.gif

No..watch/any kind of watches is non-dutiable goods or tax/duty exempted goods.
