@Kimchi Rage
I would...If I have another extra USB stick lying around.But then again the prospect of having to yank out the Sugar Learning Platform out for stuff that I actually need and use seems a bit daunting. Give this a whirl peeps!
ArchBang 2011.02 is out in the wild! About ArchBang ArchBang is a simple GNU/Linux distribution which provides you with a lightweight Arch Linux system combined with the Openbox Window Manager.Suitable for both desktop and portable systems – It is fast, stable, and always up to date. You can customise your install to suit your needs, and draw on the vast resources & knowledge of the Arch Linux community.The download page has links to both 32 & 64 bit versions, bootable as a live CD / USB – allowing you to easily test it out before doing a full install. Try it out now, we’re sure you’ll be amazed by what ArchBang Linux has to offer! ![]() Changelog:- By willxtreme | Posted on February 4th, 2011 » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Wouldn't really recommend this to noobs like myself but I strongly urge anyone unfamiliar with Arch Linux to load its site up and start reading the unofficial beginners' guide wiki 1st then get back to ArchBang's own wiki installation notes.It's not really the same thing since "The Arch Way" dictates that "" 'Simple' is defined from a technical standpoint, not a usability standpoint. It is better to be technically elegant with a higher learning curve, than to be easy to use and technically [inferior]." -Aaron Griffin" and ArchBang is technically a more user friendly Arch setup with a WM + default apps done. @powerwoot Ya for its sys mem footprint it really is an amazing feat.Just that some of e17's quirks like too much main menu power to the left mouse button on desktop, app launchers and network manager can be quite a bit of work to sort out.Tried the beta when I mucked about with PCLOS' 1st e17 spin.Not sure if the latest now stable ver already fixed those. Already run Arch on one of my systems, with some configs borrowed from Crunchbang, so I already have my own "Archbang" Tried Archbang sometime mid last year and it was decent, if not really much different from Crunchbang which it was based on. The main dude, Will, was/is a member of teh Crunchbang community. As for my opinion on the whole "learning Linux" thing, I'd rather recommend LFS, Sorcerer or Gentoo... or maybe Crux (which can use Arch's pacman). Arch does teach you more than a more grandma-friendly distro like Ubuntu or Mint, but in teh end most of the guides in the are related to maintaining an Arch system (basically sysadmin level), not so much the general Linux fundamentals. It's still a good distro, though.... as long as it's just Arch. Arch + AUR (Arch User Repo) is complete bollocks, imho. The package quality in AUR has steadily declined over the past year. Think of Arch minus AUR as a constantly rolling distro, and Arch plus AUR as constantly rolling breakage, and you'll get my drift. This post has been edited by G-17: Feb 7 2011, 09:19 AM |

While we're at it, aptosid 2011-01 anyone? aptosid is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hardware and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with aptosid's own packages and scripts. Personally, I think Sid/Aptosid is a better rolling distro than Arch, if a tiny bit less modular (purely personal opinion based on personal experience) Problem is, you picked a very, very risky time to install Aptosid. Not because of aptosid in particular, but teh Unstable/Sid repos just got unfrozen, and there's a slew of upgrades coming in, Xorg in particular. I recommend you do the safe-upgrade (read the aptosid manuals) or just hold off doing a dist-upgrade at least for teh next two weeks, until packages stabilize a bit over in the Unstable sources. |

Nope didn't give that a whirl.Just thought that it's interesting that aptosid since sidux is still is probably the only known Debian Sid focused work (or am I wrong?).Plus I'm not really into the default XFCE setup.Back when it was Sidux the forums were a bit scary. QUOTE(eq8all) @G-17 There are actually quite a few Unstable/Sid-based derivatives (http://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census), but yeah, Aptosidux is probably the most focused with regards to a rolling Sid distribution.Nope didn't give that a whirl.Just thought that it's interesting that aptosid since sidux is still is probably the only known Debian Sid focused work (or am I wrong?) I remember damentz (Liquorix kernel dev) throwing fits on Debian mailing lists and his personal blog everytime he got flamed by Sidux admins. Still, they do produce decent kernels and scripts, so credit where it's due. Version 8 of ExTiX is based on Debian Sid. Version 8 of ExTiX comes in two flavors. One of 690 MB with LXDE "The Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment" (and Xfce4 (4.6.2), Awesome and Fluxbox) and one of 1200 MB with KDE 4.5.3 - "A powerful graphical desktop environment". Language support: English and Swedish. Default locale/language is English.ExTiX (version 8) is thus based on Debian Sid and nothing else. I e there is no elements of Ubuntu or Linux Mint (or any other Linux System). ExTiX therefore differs from for example Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) and DebEX-LMDE. http://www.extix.se/ I have testing KDE version (and replace repo to debian testing one). ExTiX installer support locate ms_MY and many language. The problem is no english support forum, log-out first before reboot/shutdown. |

I would really recommend centos and ubuntu linux for server environments. So far been using server distros for work. Loving centos and ubuntu servers for online help and general ease of use. Spend 100% time maintaining linux using terminal so said goodbye to gui years ago.
As for laptop / desktop, got rid of windows because kept crashing. And everytime i used linux, my hands will get gatal and end up spending more time tweaking this and that and ending up to be different disro every other week. now using macbook. with unix based kernel, seem to be more stable than windows, and can do most of my job description so far without me tempting to further tinker. |
