writing research papers, statistical, bioinfo
-> you may search for the software you are currently using if they have linux version,
or alternative software which may suit your requirements.

for most common software you may use LibreOffice which can open / export to doc docx xls xlsx ppt pptx.

you may also read reviews from distro watch to find which is more suitable for you.

Anyway the problem with old cpu not just OS getting bigger, web browser firefox and chrominium based eat memory for modern web site eg facebook. shopee and youtube.

6GB RAM is the minima for today web. 4GB + 2GB. 4GB RAM taken over by web browser itself

Another option is using debian 32 bit PAE stable distro. The catch is some application no longer have 32 bit release

Someone from USA mentions Tiny Core or Damn Small Linux. Are these less known distros?

Damn Small Linux is well known, back in the days. Same folks who liked those would probably be on Linux From Scratch these days, I think. Or playing around with Alpine.

Oh ok, didn't know Tiny Core is spiritually successor to DSL.

Linux does not have any direct official website.
The closest to official as in the representative organization is The Linux Foundation website; as for the kernel, kernel.org which is managed by The Linux Foundation via The Kernel Organization.

I have used Linux Mint for many years, very stable, very similar to the Microsoft Windows page. Highly recommended!
