@Kimchi Rage
I would...If I have another extra USB stick lying around.But then again the prospect of having to yank out the Sugar Learning Platform out for stuff that I actually need and use seems a bit daunting.

There's also this...Fuduntu. "Punny name.Serious Distro"

Wouldn't really recommend this to noobs like myself but I strongly urge anyone unfamiliar with Arch Linux to load its site up and start reading the unofficial beginners' guide wiki 1st then get back to ArchBang's own wiki installation notes.It's not really the same thing since "The Arch Way" dictates that "" 'Simple' is defined from a technical standpoint, not a usability standpoint. It is better to be technically elegant with a higher learning curve, than to be easy to use and technically [inferior]." -Aaron Griffin" and ArchBang is technically a more user friendly Arch setup with a WM + default apps done.

@powerwoot
Ya for its sys mem footprint it really is an amazing feat.Just that some of e17's quirks like too much main menu power to the left mouse button on desktop, app launchers and network manager can be quite a bit of work to sort out.Tried the beta when I mucked about with PCLOS' 1st e17 spin.Not sure if the latest now stable ver already fixed those.

Think of Arch minus AUR as a constantly rolling distro, and Arch plus AUR as constantly rolling breakage, and you'll get my drift.
Ouchies? sweat.gif That bad eh? So essentially what you're saying is, always setup Arch w/o AUR for best results?As I'm juggling away between this install and beginners' guide wikis I gotta say that at my current level it's a little PITA anyway atm.

While we're at it, aptosid 2011-01 anyone?

aptosid is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hardware and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with aptosid's own packages and scripts.

@G-17
Nope didn't give that a whirl.Just thought that it's interesting that aptosid since sidux is still is probably the only known Debian Sid focused work (or am I wrong?).Plus I'm not really into the default XFCE setup.Back when it was Sidux the forums were a bit scary.

What the flipping f is a Manjaro you ask? Here's the About page. It's an Arch Linux based distro that's supposedly noob friendly. And why Arch? That I can't answer any better than the more experienced and knowledgeable gurus here. 1 or 2 will pounce and answer I'm sure of it sweat.gif .

how about crunchbang linux?  hmm.gif

iirc #! are Debian stable (= Wheezy or currently Squeeze hmm.gif ?) based, which is OK if you don't mind older than old packages. Rock solid stable yes but so dated that it might bother you (or not..).

If you're bored, LAZY (I'll elaborate below) and have a spare computer to spelunk some distros on, like I have an old ass Thinkpad T60 to do that then for the heck of it try this one:-

http://www.slackel.gr/forum/about.htm

- Salix OS = Slackware based but this one tracks the -current side (newer packages semi rolling)

- has GUI Live installer that's super easy. As opposed to y'know... the true slacker's way tongue.gif It's not really that hard per se compared to Debian's or Arch's text installer but like I've said if you're lazy...

- nothing fancy or flashy bloated DE. Just Openbox + fbpanel + conky + xcompmgr. Yes these are the fussier bits with text only configs that you gotta deal with.

- very low system overhead/reqs. At idle on my T60 just at sub 300MB RAM.
