Blancpain produced one of the finest masterpiece...i saw an antique blancpain online that can fetch up to 3 mil...so do u understand whats luxury now? but different people got different thinking...if u cincai ask some ah beng whats their fav luxury watch they might answer u swatch or omega... and of coz if u ask those collectors or big bucks player they might name u something u havent heard before

QUOTE(jameslionhart @ Oct 24 2008, 12:01 PM) Vacheron Constantin...wow...one of my fav timepiece also...and the list above is for? ur wanted list? lol Hi people, I don't own "luxury watches" (by watchmakers' standards, not mine, though everything's relative. I do own a Longines, a CYMA and a Movado, they are inexpensive (to me) wristwatches for everyday use and different occasions) but I had been to watch exhibitions, auctions, workshop you name it, with a humble attitude to learn. Trust me, if you ask 10 collectors and aficionados to list their top 10 brands, you get 10 different opinions. Jingyong, a nice watch you've got there, what matters is that you're happy with your timepiece, never mind what others tell you Just a note: Tissot, like Oris, Rado and Raymond Weil, are entry-level timepieces. At most by many collectors' standards they are mid-level. Yes they're reliable timepieces but you don't compare them with Kings and Queens like Patek Philippe, Rolex and Breguet. I guess the brandnames you listed are copied and pasted from some website, or your personal favourites? Apparently you missed the big names Some brands that are worth our time looking at: A. Lange & Sohne Audemars Piguet Bell & Ross Blancpain Breguet Breitling Bulgari Cartier Chopard Citizen Corum Daniel Roth Eberhard Eterna Franck Muller Gerald Genta Girard-Perregaux Glashutte Hamilton Harry Winston IWC Jaeger-LeCoultre Movado Officine Panerai Omega Patek Philippe Piaget Richard Mille Roger Dubuis Rolex Seiko TAG Heuer Ulysse Nardin Universal Geneve Vacheron Constantin Zenith Others: Baume & Mercier, Bulova, Chronoswiss, Dunhill, Elgin, F.P.Journe, Gruen, Hublot, Jaquet Droz, Martin Braun, Nomos, Parmigiani Fleurier, Paul Picot, Philippe Dufour, Sinn, Swatch, Ventura The list is not exhaustive! Of course, the tops of the line have to be Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex and Breguet. BTW, just because your peers and relatives love to talk about and show off their TAG Heuers doesn't make it more exceptional and grandiose than others. Here are the ten models whose names you should know: 1. Royal Oak (Audemars Piguet) 2. Portuguese (IWC) 3. Reverso (Jaeger-LeCoultre) 4. Speedmaster (Omega) 5. Calatrava (Patek Philippe) 6. Monaco (TAG-Heuer) 7. Tri-Compax (Universal Geneve) 8. Santos (Cartier) 9. Museum Watch (Movado) 10. Oyster (Rolex) (The list is in Gene Stone's book "The Watch" ISBN 978-0810930933) My personal favourite has always been IWC! And I disdain TAG-Heuer (clarification: just a personal prejudice, of course it's an important factor that affects what you like about a brand) because it seems some friends of mine whom I loathe are wearing this brand just to show off. Hehe.. At the end of the day, don't be a snob. It's the same be it for watch-collecting/buying or wine-drinking (you know you always bump into folks who always want a chateau). You don't have to necessarily go for the big names to talk about timepieces, or become an expert. This post has been edited by p_los7: Oct 24 2008, 05:03 PM |

QUOTE(vincentlee @ Oct 26 2008, 02:54 AM) any love for maurice lacroix, titoni, ebel, ? maybe not under luxury group also.. Nah I'm just an amateur, more like a jack of all trades personally i like those vintage tudor automatics. @ p_los7. You sure know what you are talking about.. I just find it hard to believe how some people can be so bigoted that they can't keep an open mind when talking about watches, you know, those who take so much pride in owning a Rolex and would look down their nose at you if you wear a Swatch or Casio. Anyways, was at a watch talk once and the speaker juxtaposed two brands--one being Rolex the other i forgot, could be Gerald Genta i don't remember--and emphasised that both cost about the same to buy, but that particular Rolex model was mass-produced like 100,000 pieces a year, whereas the other only fewer than 1,000. I'm sure we all know which would sell better hey who's that in your avatar? Added on October 26, 2008, 3:57 am QUOTE(quintesson @ Oct 25 2008, 11:32 PM) haha if a young man like me wears a Rolex most ah peks will dismiss my Rolex as a replica or fake. Nice, seems to me that Bell & Ross only makes watches with black dials and black straps or beige dials and beige straps. I like the fact that their watches are simple in design with highly readable large dials and numerals, like some of the Sinn's models.

QUOTE(blasto @ Nov 13 2008, 11:02 PM) hard to see from this angle and some of the photo is off focus ..but need to see the bracelet links and clasp in person.. especially the clasp area.. (fakes pay very little attention in this area) cos it's expensive to finish it properly..also for date models, date digits printed letters and lens magnification - another weak spot for fakes I think for casual viewers, quite hard to spot people wearing "good/high quality" fakes from over 1meter distance away.. need to hold in in hand and see nicely on the finishing, engraving, crown screw , raised Rolex marking on the face etc.. HI all luxury watch owner, i'm planning to get a Tag Heuer. I want to know more about how u guys take care of the watch and how safe is it to wear expensive watches for daily use?
Btw, anyone can tell me the best discount rate i can get for Tag Heuer and the location? 18% seems to be standard but some shops are willing to give 20%. |

I see. Actually i plan to get my Tag Heuer in Wata Time, Subang parade since the lady said she will surely give me a good deal. I asked her how good, she said, when i'm buying she will tell. I also told her i found a shop in Pyramid giving me 20% discount. Tag Heuer is giving a free gift for all models except Carrera, i saw this in Wata time Sunway pyramid. I hope Subang parade has that offer too. I should get the watch by next week, so must bargain nicely

I want to ask all the watch sifu's about the day or date function in the watch. When exactly does it change to the next day or date? At sharp 12am or may be around 1155pm?

err, u do it after 12 am le... see when the date suddenly changed. if the date advanced or delayed, u unwind the locking knob n click it to the 1st click...2nd click is to adjust time

Ya, i know first click will change the date. What u mean is for example, it's 1157 pm, so if the date changed, change back. Keep doing it until it's 12am. Am i right?

Mine was like 3-4 minutes before 12 it changed. Do same method?Btw, when i bought the watch yesterday, the sales person advised me not to change the date/day when the clock is in 9 to 3. She said long term can affect the accuracy of the watch. |

Is it normal for the day/date to change at 1155pm, 5 minutes before it should? Or should i adjust it like what mirage-rs suggested? ok, i went to the shop and asked her, she said should change after 12 only. Since the technician is on holiday, so i have to bring it later. She said they will use computer and test, then they will make necessary adjustments.

QUOTE(ck77 @ Dec 16 2008, 02:55 PM) Yes that's true, don't use quick change date between 9pm and 3am because the date changing machanism is engaging. You might broke the machanism if setting the date I was wondering about this. Do it mean we cannot change when 9pm to 3am because the day/date is suppose to change so it might break smtg internally? How bout 9am to 3pm? Is it ok to change because the day/date is not affected? This post has been edited by silverwave: Dec 21 2008, 03:23 PM |

plkvoon , at one glance, I thought the Longines is 42-44mm
silverwave , yes you can change the date/day during 9am to 3am as the mechanism is not function during that time. Lurker , IMHO Mido is an entry level swiss watch brand. Do try is yourself see whether you like it. It is available in Watchshoppe. For the Seiko Monster, most of the watch dealer does carry it, is not a big problem to find one. i havent started using the longines yet... i had severely injured my right thumb... so it's difficult for me to put and take out the buckle.... so just waiting for my thumb to heal before wearing it.... lucky last week the conversion rate by the credit card(thai baht vs rm) is not as high as i expected lar... kekekeke...
well i do agree if a panerai is on my wrist, it will be sure covering my whole wrist... kekekkekee... but purchasing it still long way to go... now focusing on buying a house.. hope that next year will be a good time buying one lar..... |

QUOTE(ck77 @ Dec 22 2008, 04:56 PM) This part is very true. Btw, are watch prices quite fixed in Malaysia? I mean like Tag Heuer offers 18-20% max (as far as i know). I was browsing thru some international sites and the Tag Heuer model i bought seem to be cheaper by RM500 for weekend sale. The normal discounted price is same as the price i bought. Any comments on this? |

alrighty ck77, thanks for the swift reply. Factoring in a 20% discount, even with them watches being duty free, the best is only 8.8k for speedy and 9.6k for PO in msia? If that's the case i'll use that info as a yardstick for comparison but in any case I still have plenty of time to shop around since i think i read on watchuseek about some guy who got 32-35% off where i'm at(still waiting for the AD's contacts), and if i buy it before i go back to msia for a holiday i'll get a further 9% on top of the discounted price as a tax refund.
just trying my luck here but do you happen to know the price of a tag link auto chrono and the oris tt3 black chrono? these 2 in addition to the 2 omegas are on my shortlist. not sure whether i should proceed with the dream of owning one of these swissmade badboys though =/ |

QUOTE(ck77 @ Dec 23 2008, 09:58 AM) The discount ratio is depend on the brands. Tag Heuer is fixed by their mother company, LVMH, to enhance their brand image. Yes, the prices for some online site might be cheaper than local watch dealer. However, some of them would not provide warranty card and Tag Heuer might not honour any warranty claim. Thanks for the reply. Btw, i just found out that is it not good to use automatic watches for sports like golf & gym. Is it true? Is yes, why? |

Am not a golfer myself, but most of the automatic sport series are able to withstand heat and vibration during sport activities. i.e. Tag Carrera, Ebel 1911, Omega PO etc.
Maybe some experienced golfer would like to share their views. This post has been edited by ck77: Dec 26 2008, 11:27 AM |

I've been playing golf for many years but i have never seen anyone wearing expensive watches. Next time must do a survey and ask the golfers
When i bought my watch, the sales lady told me it might cause problems in the moving mechanisms for long term usage under such conditions. Wanted to double check whether the info was true. Well, just to be safe, i won't wear it. This post has been edited by silverwave: Dec 26 2008, 12:25 PM |

nice watch mirage-rs. I like the day/date pattern. Looks unique. How old is the watch btw?
Btw, i double confirmed bout automatic watches with the shop. It's not advisable to use it for strong impact sports. I also questioned her about the day/date changing at 1152pm. She asked her technician and he said he could be because i rarely wear it. She also asked me try for a month and see whether there is any difference. @ mirage-rs : Thank you.
@ silverwave : No altimeter... but the one on the right is Emergency, which will activate an aviation emergency beacon when pulled. Need to sign a contract with Breitling that I should only pull during genuine emergency. If genuine case, they'll replace a new watch and pay the rescue expenses (if I'm still alive). If not, I have to pay all the rescue expenses occurred. From Left : Chrono Avenger + UTC about RM11k and the Emergency about RM15k. |

due to demand then the price increase i think... but not all models la... like rolex, they always increase in price or have the high trade-in and used value... like rolex daytona stainless steel....it cost double the price now. equal to daytona gold bought new. but the daytona gold is likely otherwise. So back to demand n supply le...

Bought this today for my dad. Longines Master Collection. Paid around A$1850 for it, which is around RM4450 after all the discounts and refunds. Is it overpriced? I have a few questions to go with it as well, which I hope some of you guys could help me answer. 1. How long do you need to shake it around to charge it up everyday if you don't want to wear it for the day? 2. How often should I ask my dad to bring it for a service? Thanks for any help in advance |

do not shake the watch. Wind the watch manually before you keep it and it should run for 30 hrs before the next winding.

hye there!
Today i found one of the watch shop is selling Oris Frank Sinatra Limited edition with 50% discount. is it worth buying? my concern is, why a limited edition (2090 pieces worldwide) is given such a huge discount? to original price was about 7K plus (if not mistaken). |

just buy whatever watch u think that fits ur desire and financial state... coz anything that is limited will fetch a good price in the future. bout the self winding thingy. i'm not sure coz i simply shake my tag monaco... depends on the winding mechanism thou.

I read somewhere also not to shake it too hard. The best is to make circular motions when the watch fully stops.

Oris is a very decent entry level Swiss watch brand. You won't go wrong with it. Don't look at investment perpesctive, most important is buy whichever that speak to you heart. Watch is meant to be worn and not keep in the watchbox and hope for it to appreciate Good luck and do show us when you bought it |

QUOTE(silverwave @ Jan 4 2009, 02:22 PM) Hmm ... there is no correct or right price on second-hand watches. All depend on willing buyer, willing seller. Try doing more research on sales forum, website to do some comparison. My experience, bought a second-hand Oris at Lelong for RM1k. Few months later, sold it at Ebay for RM1.8k |

yeap...the price u need to do some research abit le. Use the actual release sales price as a guide... then, estimate the depreciation of the watch. see the condition, year of manufacture, brand, type, batch, how long in the previous owner's possession, service records, completeness of documentations@certificate and box condition

If you guys are looking for more B&R type watches check out:
http://www.debaufre.com Fully swiss made, and with shipping to Malaysia the price is around RM2.5K or so. For more sedate watches, check out www.christopherward.co.uk. I just ordered the C8 pilot (Black) from Christopher Ward. Around RM1.1K including shipping. Happy surfing... |

A question to all luxury watch owners, do u guys/girls wear your luxury watch for daily use or just for certain occasions?
My concern here is more about the environment of wearing such watches, it could attract thieves. |

It is better to buy insurance to cover for your valuable items for a peace of mind. However, most of the insurers are not willing to accept it due to the high risks in nature.
If you already have the Householders/Houseowners insurance, negotiate with the insurer to extend to cover jewellery, watches, laptops, handphone into "All Risks" insurance. The rate and deductible is varies from insurers to insurers. Guys, better be safe than sorry. |

Hi i don't own any high end watches, but am interested in them. Anyway since you guys bought up criminals targetting these watches. Don't forget the cases of chopped off hands just for some rolex. If they break in big houses they would target these watches. Also a trend where there are these foreigners selling fake watches that they pass off as stolen goods. And sometimes there are real ones, but usually they approach single entrepreneurs for a quick sale. Please if it is real or not don't buy from them. But if i were to own such watch i would not wear them, simply i find them fragile. I would be better off with a CASIO or something. hehehe.
BTW 2 years ago i went to this Sincere watch event at KLCC convention center. I wonder if anyone went to that event? I registered for GP watch appreciation session where they showcase their watches, how it is made and they flew in some watchmakers for demo. I didn't get a place for the watch making session though. That was booked solid early on. |

Well, all watches regardless of their selling price, Omega, Rolex, JLC, VC, PP etc, is just a wristwatch. They may be nice to look, well designed watches but the only purpose, to tell time.BTW 2 years ago i went to this Sincere watch event at KLCC convention center. I wonder if anyone went to that event? Han dphone, MP3, PDA does tell time too. However, I do admire the marvellous engineering perspective in automatic/manual movement watches. I can’t imagine a small tiny piece of machine can run/wind by its own. If nicely taken care of, it can pass down generation to generation. It all boils down to interest and preference. Someone might own a Mercedes, but I drive a Honda, it brings me to point A to point B as well. Just my RM0.02 |

It was not running initially but after servicing and also polishing (i did it locally), she run like new and quite accurate, thus far..no major replacement to the parts and i did not refurbish just to maintain its originallity! like you said..i also wonder how this watch can still keep time for 2 generations without hassle! i wish i can pass down to my kids later! You must be lucky la then..by the way, there was one time i read an article in the Star paper (couple of month ago) on this one old guys who is watch collectors. he told reader that he has PP, omega etc ..similar to your dad..He also keep his watch in the bank for safety after his earlier collections were rob! dont tell me your dad is the one in the article!...becoz he said his kids and wife dont know bout watches and no point give them the watch later!hehe |

But i'm not here to talk about why people want to own a RM50K or more watch. I'm all for its engineering and design as well. I collect Hot Wheels cars which is quite nonsense to many!! Till now, the only watch that mesmerises me is the jaeger lecoultre gyrotourbillon. I saw it was on sale mid last year at Sincere KLCC, and spent some time staring at the thing. Much to the amusement of the guard there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTj__XKPl5M I saw the first prototype in Malaysia at the Sincere watch event. I didn't know why no one was watching it, but i really spent whole 10 minutes there watching this thing go. Until a curious crowd started to push me back! hehehe. I still have all those bochures and books from the event. My first love for these exclusive watches have to be Franck Muller's Reverso series. I specifically like the art pieces where they have hand drawn enamel potraits at the reverse section. Now both these brand rank very high on purchase if i could. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVciFi3iAlg&NR=1 Also the facination of grandfather clock style gongs in a watch. How often do u guys service your watches? Is servicing only required for automatic watches? How much does it cost roughly?
When i bought my Tag, i was told 2-3 years once and it cost around Rm100 or Rm200. However, i read a watch collector forum in lowyat and he said it cost RM600? True? Btw, all the while i thought automatic watches need to be worn for it to continue running but recently i read in the manual that we can manually wind it. Which will be better, wrist movement or wind it? This post has been edited by silverwave: Jan 9 2009, 09:06 PM |

But if the watch is been inaccurate or stop often then that's time to bring in for service. Cost depend on manufacturer to manufacturer. But local competent watchmaker should be able to service it at lower cost. When i bought my Tag, i was told 2-3 years once and it cost around Rm100 or Rm200. If you need to ensure it is fully wind, is better to manual wind it yourself. How do you know when it is fully wound? Slowly wind the crown until you feel the resistance. QUOTE(lokgotz @ Jan 10 2009, 12:21 AM) just wear it everyday...or if you cant, wind it to about 20 revolutions and it's more than enough....i dont know about other watches but rolexes will start moving on the 21st revolution... Actually i did stop my windings when i noticed the movement. It was 20+ movements but lesser then 36 ( did not count accurately). Does it mean when it starts moving, it is fully wound? Or just partially?Another thing, assuming the watch is running now but i feel that it might stop somewhere throughout the night, can i wind it? Or must i wait for it to stop 100%? QUOTE(lokgotz @ Jan 10 2009, 10:23 PM) hahah...there is NO WAY the 5980 is sold at its retail (USD40k) in Asia..it's so in demand that the price of that watch is more than double its retail...hehe... only expert knows how to differentiate diamonds and stone!! If you buy it in Switzerland, you can. But there is a looooooooong waiting list for it. So the only way to get one is to pay a premium, which is like what I said, more than double the retail price... The PP alone is about the cost of a brand new 3 series... |

QUOTE(lokgotz @ Jan 10 2009, 12:21 AM) just wear it everyday...or if you cant, wind it to about 20 revolutions and it's more than enough....i dont know about other watches but rolexes will start moving on the 21st revolution... aha is a patek... the marking on the back with the geneve is the best clue, Added on January 10, 2009, 12:23 am thanks for reading my blog...and yeah, i password protect all the watches.....dun really wanna advertise it....but since i posted in LYN, no point now... i wanted to take my pictures down after 1 or 2 days but u guys quoted already lah....so cant do much... anyway, the watch in the middle is a Patek Philippe Nautilus (ref 5980/1A)....my dad's watch...hehehe should have get it right i guess definitely cannot be a raymond weil in view of the rolex and a b&r next to it,it would not fit in patek |

QUOTE(lokgotz @ Jan 10 2009, 10:23 PM) hahah...there is NO WAY the 5980 is sold at its retail (USD40k) in Asia..it's so in demand that the price of that watch is more than double its retail...hehe... 40k USd that's the street price. If you buy it in Switzerland, you can. But there is a looooooooong waiting list for it. So the only way to get one is to pay a premium, which is like what I said, more than double the retail price... The PP alone is about the cost of a brand new 3 series... with that kind of price range even have to fly to europe to get it shouldn;'t be a problem. why pay more when it's cheaper to fly to get it.. if you think this watch is worth double at USD80k you must be dreaming... nah several for sale.. http://www.watches24seven.com/gallery2/mai...g2_itemId=10903 http://www.philippeswatches.com/listing_de...asp?itemID=3286 http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=213236 http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/Patek-Philippe-5980...7QQcmdZViewItem This post has been edited by ar188: Jan 11 2009, 02:54 PM |

Can somebody write down the top 10 brand watches. I mean watches not it's branding.
So far I can only know Blacpain, IWC, Patek Philippe and Longines. And what I see brands like Rolex, Omega are more about their brand than watches. So please list down the top watch makers that build exceptional watches. |

Hi Everyone, I'm new here! I've read most of your opinions....well, whether the watch is luxury or expensive or not, it depens on each one's view.
However, I do suggest that we look at the philosophy of the watch maker as well as the technology and workmanship which the manufacturer invested in. As no argument, the top 5 should be : 1) PP 2) AP 3) VC 4) Brequet 5) Blanpain and the rest are coming closely..... As for recent pop up stars which very pop in the market place, I've heard PANERAI, Bell & Ross....and for OMEGA, TAG HEUER, ORIS, TISSOT....those are very nice watch too for those entry level collectors. However, there's not much value for the long term collection purposes should one expecting the appreciation of value. Rolex is common and well accepted among the collectors, especially in ASIA i.e. JAPAN, HK, TAIWAN, S'pore and M'sia. As for Euro/US, they might prefer other international brands. Hope these can contribute a bit as sharing.....:-) Added on February 19, 2009, 12:47 am QUOTE(jingyong @ Oct 26 2008, 09:47 AM) the longines is too "old" for my age not really old on all Longines, there are some very trendy and younger look one. Visit their website and see how. Perhaps u can take a look at Breitling/Panerai as well. Very young...anyway, how old are you?I'm thinking of IWC first then GP then Patek.. hehe.. think only for now.. unless get specialist course in future.. or else hard also.. Added on February 19, 2009, 12:50 am QUOTE(vincentlee @ Nov 3 2008, 06:29 AM) how much is considered expensive ? Bell and Ross is expensive to me. Hey Vincent, budget way of owning 'luxury watches' is to go for vintage. might even get lucky and score some new old stock gems. R u a B&R Collectors? I'm having one too...but it's the BR-03 92, the B&R Phantom, 42mm. This post has been edited by Raja Petra: Feb 19 2009, 12:50 AM |

Just buy whichever that sing to your heart and enjoy wearing them, appreciation in value would be the secondary matter. My RM0.02 |

QUOTE(ihawk98 @ Mar 6 2009, 02:45 PM) no la, sometimes you travel overseas for a week or so and i don't necessarily bring a luxury watch along with me. but i cannot afford for it to "stop moving" as it has dates and moon phase functionality. the power reserve is only 45 hours i think. As long as you wear daily or alternate day, it shouldn't be any problem. Yes the power reserve usually more than 40 hours. One solution though, just fully wind the watch when you put it aside and think would not be wearing for more than a day. p/s: oops, you ara a spurs fan huh, sorry for your league cup lost This post has been edited by ck77: Mar 6 2009, 04:46 PM |

Hey guys, anyone know how much is Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day-date selling now in KL?
My local shop here in Australia is offering me for AUD 3550 (25% off RRP AUD)4695. And going to be another 10% off through GST refund, so that's a grand total of AUD3195 (approx. RM 7627). Any help is appreciated... |

Hi guys,
My Tissot PRC200, the stopwatch needle is not properly aligned. A little bit to the left instead of in the middle. Just bought it for less than 2 months. Can I go back to the shop to align? |

Quite a good deal considering with that amount of refund, I got myself another Tissot PRC 200 for my bro... Am one happy Tag Heuer camper now |

hey all watch enthusiasts out there, i just got my omega 300M chrono diver (caliber 1164),i have a question about setting the date correctly, may I know what is the correct & safe way of setting the date on my watch please? I've tried setting the date on position 1 by turning the crown forward as what is written on the manual, but it doesn't seems to change correctly. What will be its date change interval?

Hmm .. just make sure don't change the date during 8pm to 3am as it may cause damage in the movement. How do you know is am or pm? Very simple, wind the hour hand and observe the date, if it changes when the hour hand pass 12, then is am. Otherwise it is in pm mode. Good luck and enjoy your new baby, and do show us some pictures |

Hi all,
Anyone here know whether buying watches in swiss is cheaper than malaysia? My gf going there so i would like her to bring me back ORIS maybe.. I read in the internet its cost more than buying in malaysia because almost 95% of the watches are exported plus their cost of living is way higher than in london ... can anyone vouch it? Thanks... |

ooo nice, a luxury watch thread.
@rayzel, as i understand, it depends on which country you going to and what watch you're buying. in general, it's cheaper in HK for most brands, but in KL, if you're tight with the ADs, then you'll probably get a pretty good deal too. |

Speaking of watch magazines, i used to buy revolution and world of watch but the the mag is not on monthly issue (if i am not mistaken).
Last 2 weeks i came to know one mag shop at Amcorp Mall (ground floor) that sell "not-so-current" issues of all type of magazines, inclusive watch magazine. i bought imported watch magazine (Time Watch if not wrong) at RM12.90. the original price is RM31. but they are selling 1 or 2 month issue late la...for e.g. latest issue there was february 09 when i bought them in april. i think that should be ok for 2 months lag as its cheap...by the way, it is watch mag and not celebraties-gissop mag rite? |

man, recently tempted by the Omega Seamaster 300m quartz 212.30.41.61.01.001. Gonna be my first watch to touch four figures, and now trying to convince myself I don't need to spend 5k on a watch when my budget is only 4 ><
anyone has any suggestions on other models which won't blow my budget away? |

Hi guys,
I got myself an Maurice Lacriox Pontos Day/Date Automatic watch and its my first mechanical watch. Need to ask a few questions for the more experienced ones out there: 1. Does a typical self-winding low-midrange automatic watch run for 42 hours without "recharging" before the time stops? 2. When the watch stops and I wind the crown approximately 50 times and nothing happens. I have to shake the watch before it runs and then it stops a few hours later if I don't wear the watch. Is this suppose to happen? I winded till I felt some resistance indicating I wounded it sufficiently. 3. When wearing the watch the whole day I believe it would sufficiently "charge" the watch due to movement but I feel winding doesn't seem to help. I can't seem to find such information on my watch and any advice is much appreciated. Thank you. ![]() |

Thank you. ![]() |

anzhsb : Nice rollies you got there
MangO : Sounds a defect for me. I beleive it is an ETA calibre and if yes, the power reserve would last for more than 40 hours. And yes, you could self wind the watch without shaking it. Bring it back to the shop to exchange for new one, at least repair and service for you. vincentlee : I think it has been discontinued and you could only get it from second hand market. Saw one in the second hand shop at Time Square, if I recall correctly. |

Retail price is RM6,400 if I recall correctly. Got approximately 25% discount which works out to RM4,800. Cheers. @ ck77 Thanks for the advice. I'll likely bring it back this weekend for them to check. Going to test it for a few more days to be sure. Grrr! Doubt they'll do a 1 to 1 exchange. Maybe repair although its less than 1 month old. |

Has anyone bought watches worth over USD1000 over the net from a foreign country, either from eBay or from watch fora members? I'm more interested to know how the local Customs Officers treat these kinds of purchases. I know that all watches brought into the country are duty free, but...

Hi!
One of my best freind had just recently setup business selling european design watches (swiss and germany) and i had helped him to setup an online watch store (www.e-giftsshop.com). These watches ain't famous brand as Tag Heur, Rolex, IWC etc but to me (a layman) the design of the watches are really good. Soon he will open his retail store at Endah Parade ( if you interested any of the watches and wanted to view the real stuff just pm me) at the moment the store are still under renovation. Honestly these are not replica or used engine watches. 100% new and genuine watches. Also there will be more design will be uploaded onto the website in coming months. |

QUOTE(MangO @ Jun 8 2009, 10:40 PM) Hi guys, Hopfully its not late, ML Pontos, usually based on ETA 2824-2.I got myself an Maurice Lacriox Pontos Day/Date Automatic watch and its my first mechanical watch. I can't seem to find such information on my watch and any advice is much appreciated. Thank you. 1) Don't get this qns. if U had it fully wound, watch will run approx 38-42hrs b4 it stops. if u are wearing it for sometime and didn't wear it, watch may stop after 24hrs or 10hrs. all depends on your activity and how much it wound it up. 2) once U wound the watch, it should start moving, U don't have to shake it. If U do, something is WRONG with the watch. I suggest I take it in. In fact when U lift up the watch, it should get some "energy" to make the watch tick. 3) All the watches based of ETA 2824 family winding helps. if U can only get it moving thru moving. Again, something isn't RIGHT. Do take it IN ASAP to get it check!!! hye guys...just my opinion
i dont think that tag heuer is good brand watches because I heard a lot problem and faulty by it self and factory. There dont have there own machine(engine) and they manufacture the watch by machine and mold. Besides the price is really ridiculous and the quality doesn't same level with top watch branded like rolex, omega, paul picot, AP, GP,IWC, JLC and etc. I can say that the Mido watch much better than Tag Heuer if we compare the technology, price and reliable... |

The more older the watch, the more good watch are....look at IWC Portuguese... it produce by 19++ however the chronograph are work perfect..only u have to maintain the service. Besides the older watch are, the value might increasing depending the model and year. I believe every luxury watch are not easy fragile...however I don't surprise if i heard the Tag Heuer is easy fragile...for me, Tag is not qualify as Luxury watch. This was the very last model V-Series 16600 Sea-Dweller in stock at the authorised dealer in Malaysia.
Surprisingly for other products once discontinued, the price goes down. For Rolex, the SD has been replaced by the bigger, thicker Deep Sea Sea-Dweller (DSSD). The DSSD is RM29k. I believe Rolex dealers were able to give 5-15% discounts as do Watatime and others, and the SD used to be RM18,999 but the last few units were sold at RM22k, WITHOUT any discount. PROS - It's a ROLEX (A 'Reference Brand') - It's a Sea-Dweller, a 'Cult Watch' - 4000ft / 1220m depth rating - Thick sapphire crystal - Value doesn't depreciate as much as other brands (there's always someone ready to buy a used Rolex) - 904L Steel (Very hard) - Quite thick - Everyone thinks its a fake (hence less likely to chop your arm off to get it!) - Smooth sweeping seconds hand - No need to wind up watch as it's automatic (3135 movement) - Has date display - Doesn't have ugly 'cyclops' magnifier as per the date display Submariner (Originally I was aiming for the non-date Submariner) - Comfortable bracelet - It's actually as light as, or lighter than an Omega Speedmaster, probably due to the bracelet being simpler, and the clasp being made of thin stamped steel - Bracelet links are thicker than Deep Sea Sea-Dweller CONS - Everyone thinks its a fake - 'Old Man' image (especially amongst those who don't know the history of Rolex, and/or what a Sea-Dweller is) - 39mm or 40mm diameter, shows its age. 42mm would be OK I guess - Dial face is small, about 29mm - Shiny hands reflect things and can get hard to see compared to the all-white (matt) hands of Speedmaster, for example - Quite thick - Bracelet links simple (compared to Omega Speedmaster) - Clasp is made of thin stamped steel. - Stamped-in 'fake bracelet link' pattern on clasp This post has been edited by BikerVoodoo: Sep 17 2009, 11:13 AM |

Congrat to your new toy BikerVoodoo.
SD is always my dream watch, doesn't like the newer DDSD as I find it too thick for comfort. And same like you, I dislike the cyclops date magnifier on Sub. By the way, how much is the Sub no date? |

The Stainless Steel Sub No Date (SSSND) was RM14k (after discount, retail RM17k or something), but 2 weeks ago or thereabouts it jumped to RM15k!!
That's when I decided to go for the SD. I don't mind the date on the SD, it's in fact quite practical but the cyclops magnifier just doesn't look right, for me. The DSSD would look perfect if they removed that ring inside which loudly proclaims its 'technology'. The thickness is a bit absurd but that's the price to pay for its unbelievable 12,800 feet / 3,900 metre depth rating. Rolex is good but you're paying a lot for that 904L Steel, Parachome Blue spring (IF the one you're buying has it) and unique 3135 movement but most of all it's the brand. There are tons of 'Homage' versions around, but I've found the best 'Bang For Buck' is a small direct-to-customer (he cuts out the middlemen and keeps the price down) watch company called OWC (Orange Watch Company), run by Daniel Fock. Dan Fock has two homages, MS-5517 is an ISO (In the Spirit Of) of the R-5517 of 1972, a special issue to the SBS (Special Boat Squadron), with 200m water-resist. MS-9411 is apparently an ISO of the Tudor 9411/0 of early 1970’s, WR200m. He has increased it to 300m. Actually the T-9401/0 of 1976 was issued to the French Navy. Both similar watches… but he liked the 9411 number so went with that one. Quality is good and they use an ST movement, which I believe is a close equivalent to an ETA 2824/2836. Even Swiss makers like Valanvron use ST movements, assemble them in Switzerland and qualify for 'Swiss Made'. ![]() 200M Milsub, 316L stainless steel, sapphire crystal ![]() 300M Snowflake, 316L stainless steel, anti-reflect, sapphire crystal Check out their website and specs here: OWC WATCH SPECS Value for money, good service from watchmaker Daniel Fock. He's very transparent and gives details about movements too: OWC MOVEMENTS This post has been edited by BikerVoodoo: Sep 17 2009, 10:24 AM |

hey there guys... my dad decided to get me my first real watch.. so i did some research and stuff.. and it came down to these 3 models...
1.http://www.amazon.com/Baume-Mercier-Capeland-S-8502/dp/B000Y1NBFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1253934334&sr=1-1-spell its discontinued so cant get it from official website... 2. http://www.mauricelacroix.com/en/Collection/Pontos.html ( ths is the exact model.. http://www.watchnerd.com/pt7548ss001130.html 3. http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/car...w=CV2010.FC6205 i like the baume & mercier but the only flaw is that the case back isn't transparent.. whereas for the tag.. many ppl said its overpriced and stuff.. and for the ML, the coments online doesnt seem to be too good either maybe because its a generally new brand.. well i like the looks of these 3 watches.. but cant decide... as i'm still new in watches.. would like to ask opinions here... IMHO the BM looks too complicated, the surfaces are too highly polished giving it an almost comical look. There are reasons why it's been discontinued I suppose. The Maurice-Lacroix designs also look ephemeral.
The Carrera is OK I suppose but at close to RM10k you'd be better off getting a stainless steel, no-date Rolex Submariner at RM15k! Get something that will last you a lifetime. Research Buy in haste, regret at leisure. ![]() No regrets with the Rolex. It's a 'reference' watch. This post has been edited by BikerVoodoo: Sep 26 2009, 11:28 AM |

Nah it doesn't matter anyone can wear a Rolex. It's just that Malaysian society perceives it to be a certain way. The Submariner isn't common and is a watch you can keep for a lifetime.
By ephemeral I mean that the design isn't long lasting, it is, to me just a 'fad' and won't be here 50 years from now. Classics like the Submariner have been around since 1954. The Omega Speedmaster has been around since 1957. Both are classics, with timeless designs. Both look up-to-date and perfectly acceptable even today. |

The Speedmaster has hardly changed since 1962. Used in space, on the moon, etc. A legend. It looks absolutely NOT dated and even people who know hardly anything about watches are totally shocked when I tell them it was used on the moon.
One thing to keep in mind though, it's a MANUAL wind-up watch. This might be a hassle to you. The bracelet is amazing. The design puts Rolex to shame and the machined-from-solid clasp makes the stamped-steel Rolex clasp look like pasar malam stuff. The case has a beautiful combination of polished and brushed surfaces, with good curves. Also, the NASA spec requires that the crystal be made of plastic. This means it's shatterproof but it can get scratched more easily than sapphire crystals (as per the Submariner, OWC MilSub, etc.). You'll need to give it a polish with Polywatch abrasive cream once in a while if the Omega crystal gets scratched. The Speedmaster is RM10,900 but I believe you can get 10-15% off retail. The size is 42mm. Perfectly sized, and not insanely large. Good enough for daily use and to wear to formal events. The Sub is 40mm so it's a little too small. Actually you probably don't need chrono, and the wind-up and plastic crystal can be a hassle. I think what you need is a classic Swiss mechanical watch, sapphire crystal, 300m water resistance, date display and a beautifully crafted metal bracelet/clasp. This is my recommendation for you, the Omega 300M Sea-Master. http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Seamaster-Auto...0/dp/B000EJNL8U This post has been edited by BikerVoodoo: Sep 26 2009, 12:31 PM |

I believe there's the smaller 39 or 40mm 'Speedmaster Reduced' or the much more expensive Speedmaster Co-Axial which is 44mm and has a date display. Unless mistaken I think its closer to RM20k. This is like a mutant Speedmaster and doesn't really appeal to me.

I'd say get the Submariner. Being young you're gonna hit it on gates, walls, etc. The Sub is tough and won't look bad with a few scratches and dents on it. The date to me is a non issue. If you really must have a date there's the Deep Sea Sea-Dweller (DSSD), but is it worth the RM29k it's going for?

Not in favour. I'd rather go for an OWC. My brother is going to use one. Should be good. I'd say the quality will be at least Tudor Submariner level if not Rolex. OWCs are built with passion and in very limited quantity for the price of a Tissot. Everything a mechanical collectible divers watch should be.

USD300 for a Sea-Gull Chinese movement, hmm, still bit of sceptical. Assembled in Australia I supposed? As the email ended in 'au'
Anyway, awaiting your review on the OWC since yoru brother is getting one. |

Yes I think you should get the Rolex Submariner, Stainless Steel - No Date (SSND). It's a classic and a reference. If you don't wanna spend so much the OWC Milsub can be an alternative and you can save up for a DSSD.

If in doubt just take it to your nearest Rolex dealer. They can open it and check the movement inside. Rolex watches are insanely simple. I told everyone at the office that my Sea-Dweller was a Grade AAA fake and they believed it!!!

Besides the changes on the bezel, which is now all black instead of black/green or orange or grey, the 3H tubes rating is now T instead of T25 on the older diver models. I checked it out on the other watch forums and they posted that T25 basically means that it has <25 Tritium and T on the dial means that that it has >65 and up to 100 Tritium on it. Some Ball watches has T100 on the dial (notably the Aviator series), which means that it has 100+ Tritium on it.
So, in other words, the new Engineer Master II Diver with all black bezel has much brighter lumes than the other Diver models. No wonder when I see it at night, it is a lot more brighter than my Ball Trainmaster Pulsemeter. Fyi, the more Tritium, the brighter the lume is at night. Pictures will be up soon. Btw, if you are planning to get an Omega, get the Aqua Terra models instead. I just bought an Automatic Omega Lady Aqua Terra in SS for my wife last month. She loved it a lot. My next watch purchase should be a Rolex GMT Masters II with the new ceramic dial so that my SS Rolex Datejust won't be so lonely. This post has been edited by friedricetheman: Oct 8 2009, 04:13 PM |

QUOTE(yijzen @ Sep 26 2009, 11:17 AM) hey there guys... my dad decided to get me my first real watch.. so i did some research and stuff.. and it came down to these 3 models... why not just go for IWC Portofino...If u really good in nego, I believe u can get around rm8k....these watch are really awesome compare to any Omega,bm and tag1.http://www.amazon.com/Baume-Mercier-Capeland-S-8502/dp/B000Y1NBFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1253934334&sr=1-1-spell its discontinued so cant get it from official website... 2. http://www.mauricelacroix.com/en/Collection/Pontos.html ( ths is the exact model.. http://www.watchnerd.com/pt7548ss001130.html 3. http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/car...w=CV2010.FC6205 i like the baume & mercier but the only flaw is that the case back isn't transparent.. whereas for the tag.. many ppl said its overpriced and stuff.. and for the ML, the coments online doesnt seem to be too good either maybe because its a generally new brand.. well i like the looks of these 3 watches.. but cant decide... as i'm still new in watches.. would like to ask opinions here... |

Guys, If you're going to buy a Rolex, where would you go to ? There's this particular model which I like. Went to HG at KLCC today, the salesgal there was like..well she behaves like she owns the rolex company itself and you're not good enough for a rolex, then I went to another AD, not good too.. I'm no regular to these outlets, I know very little about watches. Only thing is..I saw someone wearing this model and I really liked it and I would like to get one too but I don't know where to get a good price for it. The list price for this watch is about RM25K. |

ABSOLUTELY NO DISCOUNT. In fact they raised the price 3k due to the fact that the 16600 had been discontinued.

My dad is about to get his Tissot polished for scratch removal. How effective is the polishing service offered by watch shops? Anyone tried before?

You can always get a polishing cloth and a polishing stone to DIY. Much cheaper that way. But, if you really want to get it polished, I suggest bringing it back to Swatch Group to do it. Usually, the service centers will polish your watches for you when you send them in for service. I never trust watch shop people as I have a bad experience with one of them who did some servicing on my watch and also removed some parts in my watch too. Ever had a swiss watch with made in china parts... |

QUOTE(humaizyharmy @ Oct 14 2009, 09:39 PM) rolex, omega are out my league.. cannot afford those watches for now.. Dunno... your description kinda vague. I have a rolex datejust in Stainless Steel (it looks like a silver casing) and it is with no numbers but have luminious markers for the minutes and it is with a silver dial. As for the black dial, there are quite a number of dial configurations for the datejust. The Rolex Submariner also has no numbers on the dial and it comes with a all black dial. But it has a unidirectional bezel (in black also) for the stainless steel model. I have both models.can only afford these two.. left one is my wife's.. the diver is mine.. ![]() i saw one rolex ad on espn recently.. rolex with black dial.. no numbers on it.. silver casing.. one golfer playing on a building something like that.. that rolex really nice.. what model is that? wow just discovered this thread. really should tell my dad about this. for a 2nd-hand watch dealer like him would drown in elation.
are u guys into Rolex/Pateks/IWC/AP etc? coz its really amazing to find my dad with a 'new' watch almoz every week, especially when it comes with a good price. the thing about 2nd hand watches are u need not suffer loss of money when u sell off ur 1st hand watch. sometimes u can even gain profit from selling them. this trend is totally hot in Hongkong and Milan o.0 surprising.. |

QUOTE(alantch @ Jul 13 2009, 04:41 PM) Has anyone bought watches worth over USD1000 over the net from a foreign country, either from eBay or from watch fora members? I'm more interested to know how the local Customs Officers treat these kinds of purchases. I know that all watches brought into the country are duty free, but... I bought quiet a few watches from eBay, above USD1000. No taxes so far. I think wristwatches are tax free here. What has been your experience? Cheers |

QUOTE(maverickwarrior @ Oct 21 2009, 11:00 PM) sifu2 sekalian! Don't think you will be able to get a seiko kinetic or spring drive at that price range. You might have to buy a seiko quartz watch instead. The only downside is that after 20 years, give or take, you might have to replace the IC which will cost you as much as the watch. But then again, the cost of changing the battery is cheap (less than RM100).my dad's birthday is coming and I plan to get him a Seiko watch... problem is that I know nuts about watches... So wan to ask for sifus help to recommend me... Budget around RM300 - RM500. Wan to get sporty looking ones rather than the "uncle" look... Thanks in advance!!! Anyway, go to City Time in Mid Valley. They have a wide collection of seiko's. Remember to fully pay by cash so they will give you a discount. Ask for a minimum of 20% discount as that's the norm for seiko watches. |

I checked out the Milgauss. The green sapphire version looks interesting but I think its about 22k. I think the Submariner no date is a better buy. RM15k.

thanks for the kind words. and thanks for the price check.
personally, i think the submariner is quite chunky; hence the reason why i prefer the milgauss. i quite like the black dial with orange highlight; but at RM22k, its more than a little out of reach. there is one submariner i'd be interested in; the customed submariner by bamford and mastermind japan: ![]() but i hear the price is more than a little ridiculous. if anyone has any information on what an oyster perpetual air-king is... i'd appreciate it as well: ![]() |

Under 6k just get the OWC MILSUB. If movements matter just pay more for the Soprod A-10 movement. That would beat anything Ball or B&R have to offer. The Soprod A-10 is superior to the ETA 2892.
Otherwise, IMHO just save up for a Rolex. Nothing else holds its value like one or gets the instant recognition. I was in KFC the other day and some guy just couldn't keep his eye off it. During a dinner a lady also kept looking at my Sea-Dweller. |
