Hmm.... I don't think so.....
First time using quick format with install WinXP is take up to 50min

Within week by week, i become slow and slow via copy, paste document or install software......

And 1 month later.... it totally become like a snail.... -.-"

So I try repair the window.... but resulting failed.... because it will to copy WinXP file into the HDD....

So I use up about 2 hours.. to format....

If as you said..... 1 TB need that much time..... then 2 TB sure need double of the time  shocking.gif

For the HDD.... I had warranty for a new unit but haven't use it because I already install 160GB Caviar Blue....

As I gone through few website.... they had stated that Caviar Green have many problem.

First time yes... but second time nope.....
That really trouble if really need that much time....
If in future, there is 10TB.... then i have spent 20hours only for format  shakehead.gif

They said the performance loss of an unaligned WD10EARS, or any 4K sector HDD, with Windows XP will be about 11% on average. But maybe that is without considering file fragmentation.

Generally, ignore the buffer size and take a look at the benchmarks instead.

They're only temporary buffers that gets exhausted in less than a second. You get a much bigger and permanent performance boost with larger platter sizes.

Buffer size get you syiok for split second not even one second, biggrin.gif the difference between 16MB, then the rest depended on the disk performance, like how many platter, platter density etc.

Hard disk buying guide
1. desktop or laptop
If desktop, try buy SATA, if IDE, try to get new PC or machine
If laptop, do check out your notebook warranty policy before anything.
2. Budget
Check your budget, rm150 500gb, rm210 1TB, rm285 1.5TB, rm390 2TB.
Above is the sample price range, SSD are quite expensive, I don't have the price range. Bottomline is, you pay what you get. Notable major hard disk brand Seagate, WD, Samsung, Hitachi
3. Look for brand, shop, after sales, warranty wise, Seagate and WD are well established here.

Yes, you need WD align for XP to work with new 4K sector HDD, like 10EARS.

No, XP is not written/designed to recognise the new HDD with 4K sector. In the future, all HDD is expected come with 4K sector one.

It won't damge the HDD, but there is significant performance loss as your experience.

If you are on a higher budget ,go for WD Black(there is a newer version recently?).

QUOTE(cherroy @ Jun 8 2010, 04:03 PM)
I think you get the "advanced format" of 1TB which is not compatible with XP.

Quick format, don't need 50 min.

Ya,it is not compatible with Win XP.

Anyone here from Kuching Sarawak that knows of cheap 2TB HDD? I just asked 1 and that really has stock and WD one cost 479!!! Cannot nego, said "old stock, previous 5xx, earn not much... bla bla bla"

Also if possible Samsung 2TB F3? Seriously need it urgently... and cheaper than RM430, cause of budget buying another 4-in-3 device to convert my ODD drive area to HDD rack.

Sigh, why Kuching here always so hard to find what I want and... darn the shipping cost T.T

speedwise i think samsung spinpoint still wins over caviar black, Caviar black new version only has 64mb cache, and new choices of 3.0 gbps sata or 6.0 gbps.
