Let dedicated this thread to Intel Quadies 45nm ( Codename : Yorkfield ) .

Here the complete Yorkfield family list smile.gif

C2Q 45nm users, come in and show me you break 4.0ghz barrier with your quad . I cant even break 3.5ghz properly with my X3320. Going to try harder later by pump up the vcore.

Technically, it's tough to get over 450fsb on quads. Even to stablised it on 440fsb is not easy

Yea i was kinda disappointed because i was aiming for 4.0ghz just like my E7200. But stuck at 444FSB at the moment.

LOL! 7.5x on X3320 is PITA to OC till 4Ghz. or should i say impossible. it's FSB wall of that proc, around 440 - 470.

i just tested my X3320 today, FSB wall at 450. still priming at 1.225V vCore (idle: 1.216; load: 1.200)

i meant X3320 FSB wall is 440-460. 450 is specifically for my proc. at least below 1.218V load. will try 2.5V later

hehe, tested the proc throughly but seem like it hitting FSB wall VERY fast.

450 at 1.2375V Bios (idle: 1.232; load: 1.216). fully stable after priming few hours, few loops of 3DM06

Using P35-DS3P v1.0 with F11 bios. new bios support 45nm cpu. and i noticed that the precision for vCore, vMem, etc has been increased. very precise compare to earlier bios. loadline calibration also available O_o

VTT, GTL, etc not available on P35 chip. it's introduced by intel on P45 board, iirc

side story tongue.gif,
tested my OC 448*7.5 at 1.248v LOAD and successfully run IntelTestBurn 20 loops.
huge jump in temp and needed vCore compare to Prime95 (1.200v LOAD)

I put 40 loops then go sleep. Wake up, my pc still running. Click close program, and open IE, it hang. Then i restart run another 5 loops, drink coffee, it finished and success. Then i on microsoft word, hang again. Not sure why this happen, but problem solve after increase voltage.

first of all, Q9300 VID is higher than X3320, that's why it require lower voltage to OC, at least at lower speed.

for my board, i didnt touch my vFSB and vMCH, only slight bump in vCore. FSB max around 450. any higher require VTT/GTL/etc which is not available on my P35 board sad.gif

VTT/GTL/etc <-- is it available in x48 boards? coz i dont remember anything like it in my bios..or i've missed it

btw,,,vid and vcore is 2 different things eh?
*
VID is intel specified voltage. vCore is the voltage u set in BIOS. x48 should have those setting, as some P35 boards also have it.

my current config on X3320 on p45-ds3 mobo & DDR2 6400 ram

@3GHZ (400x7.5)
20 tests passed with flying colours. rclxm9.gif

@3.375 (450x7.5)
5 tests passed. thumbup.gif

but,
20 tests failed. all the norm value not equal. cry.gif

seems to hit fsb wall on 450MHz. anyone has any suggestion to get higher?
i'll be very happy if it can stable & tested on IBT @ 3.5GHz.

yup, correct. i also shocked when saw it the first time. lol
hopefully just misread & not defect or something. sweat.gif

@-pWs-:
i use default/auto setting for all except the FSB. dont have time to tweak more. just build this rig last night & straight away OC. icon_rolleyes.gif

will try to tweak the vcore & ram timing for higher result.
but kinda scared as now the temp is already passed 70C for 20 tests.
hopefully can get "rock solid heart touching" stable at 3.5GHz.

Read from other sources, the wall for my mobo is 460-470 MHz, proc is 460-480 MHz & RAM up until 500 MHz. if can get stable around 460 then 3.5 GHz, baby! brows.gif

i need that high voltage maybe due to the mobo.
vdrop: 0.04
vdroop: 0.1 sweat.gif
during load, voltage drop to 1.3v
probably will try to increase to 1.5v just to check whether can reach 460-470MHz stable. but the temp reading holding me back.

how can you get 444 in only 1.25v?
need tweaking summore to check whether can be stable 450fsb at lower voltage.
my hsf is xigmatek s1283. from review, it should be good hsf rite?
maybe it's bcoz of my high voltage.
coz @ 440fsb 1.25v, the temp is around 72-73 max.

will try disable C1E & EIST first tonite.
probably the cause of instability since vcore must be pump everytime cpu goes from idle to load.
hopefully problem can be solved asap. brows.gif

download latest IBT, v1.5.1 iirc. using newest stable Linpack. i suspect previous version not that accurate at finding stability but no doubt in stressing haha

currently my x3320 running 448*7.5 1.08v LOAD 24/7 smile.gif

wish can clocked it higher though, 3.6ghz probably? but my FSB wall is 450, probably my P35 board

Around 20~22minutes for 20 loops to finish.

Tpower i45 not bad, bios is certainly more simple compared to alf's Asus P5Q.
But the vdroop makes my teeth grind seriously.... 0.024v!!!!! vmad.gif

I did some experiment with IBT last nite.

My X3320 at 3.33ghz only stable with around 1.3vcore.

So i go in window, and i use EasyTune, and tune down my vcore to 1.23volt. As i predicted, IBT max stress 40loops , all success. But after i close the IBT program, my PC straight BSOD.

My window is Vista 64bit. Window problem? Or my IBT problem?

Eh P5Q got no GTL ref settings? That's terrible. Lucky I didn't buy one..was thinking of either my I45 or a P5Q Pro/Deluxe..

Your chip's pretty good though - 3.6Ghz without meddling with the GTL Refs.

Ohh yup the other day when I went down to robyn they also had no stock of the I45. I was lucky bought it from another forumer heh.

I'm old school, so I normally test stability with Prime95. Will give IBT a try later kua. Surprising that pass will BSOD - i thought fail will BSOD =p

Aha priming with 3.6Ghz now. 3dmark in a day or so once I get the other settings sorted out - I reckon I can lower Vdimm and maybe Vfsb/Vnb a bit.
Going out soon too =p

finally increase fsb to 495, can login to windows! 3.7GHz, baby! rclxm9.gif
but a few seconds ibt start, hang! cry.gif

but happy enough knowing that my system can stand up to 490fsb.

i notice 1 thing for the penryn quad core aka yorkfield,

the more vtt(vfsb) the less vcore needed for a particular clockspeed, hence running cooler.

may i know wat vtt(vfsb) most users here using ? i using 1.3v

but dun increase untill 1.4v or above as it will kill ur yorkfield according to anandtech

Your mobo's an X48-DQ6 though. Can't be that's the bottleneck. Maybe I was just lucky la..seems like my proc's exceptional for some reason.
I certainly never expected a 12hr prime stable proc at 3.5Ghz 1.24v..

Hmm I had an Abit IP35-E that had GTL refs. Only 1 tho, not 2 like the IP35 Pro or most P45s. Thought the Gigabyte equivalent would have GTL Refs too.

Xpresside - Intel Vcore specs indicate max safe vcore for Yorkfield to be 1.3625:
http://www.intel.com/design/core2quad/documentation.htm

Vtt = Vfsb. Vmch is your northbridge voltage. Typically at higher FSB levels you need to up the voltages accordingly.

what's vtt. wht is it called in gigabyte p45 mobo bios?

Added on September 1, 2008, 3:33 pmcmiiw,
search with the help of uncle google.
in my mobo (ep45-ds3),
vtt = fsb termination
gtl = cpu reference
is that correct?

Vtt is very likely called Vfsb in your BIOS. GTL is a ratio of that figure.

OC 4/3 - I can see 3.75Ghz 500FSB on my proc! It's not 100% stable though. I can run superpi 1M in 14secs but didn't get a screenshot cos it BSODed when I opened Paint hahaha.

Also I'm not happy at all at that speed cos it requires 1.41v..

oo so vTT is vFSB ar
in that case x48 got
GTL REF 1 and 2 also got in x48
is GTLREF worth modifying to get stable or more clocks ?rite now it's set as normal/auto

Yeah, Vtt is often called Vfsb. As for GTLrefs, yeah quads are pretty sensitive to those settings - it's often the key to higher clockspeed. I'd tinker around with the different settings (start at 0.63) and see which works best for you.

Mm that makes sense..since your proc is idling anyway. I just turned on EIST and C1E, and my idle temps drop by like 1C only. Lol.

my load temp at 3.5 GHz is already near 80C.
at 3.6 GHz reached 80C.
is it safe for everyday use?
if not then maybe lower it down to 3.3 GHz coz i can use stock voltage at that speed (440MHz fsb)

Haha yeah, a lot of ppl impressed by Xeon name. My cousin came to my place, I asked him which he think is faster - my QX9650 or the X3320. He thought X3320 =p

Cyclone - X3320 is ~5-10% faster than Q6600 at the same clock rate, due to Yorkfield core optimizations. That translates to 200-360Mhz (around there la) at our current overclocking So there's no point going back to Q6600 when X3320s can reach 3.5-3.6Ghz lor..

How about GTL setting?
You can try lower vTT and pump GTL.

A bit to high for 24/7 on vTT.

Let say,
1.3 x 0.61 = 0.793 = 1.26 x 0.63

It is just a reference. I might be wrong.

i can't find any GTL setting in my bios.
or is it CPU Reference?
if it is, i already put 0.9 if im not mistaken. The default is 0.5.

anyway, what i the most trusted core temp reader program that can be used to measure cpu & system temp?

coz my easy tune app read max 50-55 C during load but core temp & real temp read 70-73 C max during load.

3.6Ghz is only stable at 1.32V, which I'm not gonna put my processor through 24/7 la =p
3.75Ghz (500Mhz FSB!) is stable at 1.4V, which obviously cannot lor long term..

Haha cannot get la. I put WTT my Tpower with another P45 (my CCF is blocking my CM690's top fan socket cos of the Tpower's CPU socket arrangement) so many ppl pm me offering to buy for RM430 to RM440.
But now that I've done so much testing I'm gonna live with -1 fan la =p

death - I've replied your PMs d. I disabled all the CPU features while I was doing the stress testing, but now they're all back on, including C1E and EIST.

anyway i cant believe that my processor consider good...i hit 3.66ghz on 1.232v and stable, somemore i got this processor without looking much just straight ahead buy from jetkiat since i saw his WTS quite for sometimes and ppl seem to ignore it...
i got it on july 10 just before that price slash for rm850 seal box...

now im feeling lucky lol...anyway ice mocha good result have you try to get stable on 4.0ghz??
for mine i think the ram hold me back coz in order for me to run this at 3.66ghz my ram performance level have to drop down to 8(its a 2gbx2 stick)..i try a few other combo but seem like havent got any good yet, anyway since you under water why not try to hit 4.0 stable just maintain ur fsb vtt and crank up those vcore volt since watercool should low those temperature tremendously.. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

anyway, what i the most trusted core temp reader program that can be used to measure cpu & system temp?

coz my easy tune app read max 50-55 C during load but core temp & real temp read 70-73 C max during load.

Hmm guys, can somebody enlighten me what is this 2 option in my bios?

Robust Graphic Booster : Auto ; Fast ; Turbo
Performance Enchance : Standard ; Turbo ; Extreme

When i put performance enchance to extreme, i need addition of 0.5-0.7v to get my processor stable on the same clock speed. But the superPI score did improve a little by 1Sec.

I usually base it on Intel's own specs.... for example, the Q9300 is here (VID voltage range): http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=SLAWE#

However, it never mention whether that is for bios setting or the average vcore in windows.... hmm.gif

Yep, I posted the wrong link sorry. Kmarc's statement is right - we can deduce from Intel VID specs that max safe voltage is 1.3625V. 1.45V is the absolute max given in the documents, and I'd be very hesitant to run my proc near that =p

both are not from the same family and specs so u cant really compare that way IMHO...

q6600 have a higher multiplier of 9 which makes it easier to reach higher clock n capable of taking more voltage due to 65nm while q9450 is a proc with lower multiplier of 8 thus making it not really that easy to reach a high clock... but as far i as know, running the same clock speed n other settings together, q9450 will beat q6600....

Oh. Its not about affordability but I want value for money as I am going to overclock it.
I am targeting at 3.5Ghz either processor. I'm looking something to go along with my 4870.
1 year investment for my pc as my old junk has failed me.
I used to buy a expensive desktop around 15 grand and it was under utilized.
I can wait for a month.

Q9550 will easily hit 3.5Ghz. Q6600 not so much, most can reach 3.4Ghz but 3.5 - 3.6Ghz is a stretch, and sometimes will not be 100% stable. Also, vcore and temps will be pretty insane. There's more details if you read the responses in the Q6600 thread.

Also, Q9550 will be 10-15% faster than Q6600 at the same clock rate, due to Yorkfield core optimizations and more cache.

So yeah, Q9550 for sure =p

pws - They can't get the processors all the time lor. I'm lucky my friend is female and isn't interested in expensive processors..

Thanks for the heads up mate. I'll be going for Q9550 now.
OEM seller pinmiao is selling QX9650 at 1890 with no warranty.
Is it worth it to buy from her? I never dealt in forum before yet alone buy OEM processor.

PWS. Just find a girlfriend there. That will solve you problem and new supply of processor every month.

Well my processor is a tray (OEM) one as well. IMO OEM processors are perfectly fine - the death rate of Intel processors is so low. With EE processors even more so - those are Intel's highest binned and best silicon.

Also, pinpinmiao's a pretty reliable seller i think - I've never personally dealt with her, but her thread's full of good comments.

Ok now the million dollar question: Is it worth it to buy a QX9650 over a Q9550? If your plan is value for money, then no, the Q9550's a way better buy, and you're better off spending the RM900 or so you save on a 4870x2. Only buy the QX9650 if your plan is speed at any cost =p

*
Thanks mate. All I need to ensure no bottleneck occurred with my system.
Read some reviews state that 3.5 quad core is the best assurance.
Planning to get 4870. If I feel that 4870 x2 is worth it, then will grab that otherwise.
Need to get Logitech G25 to play grid now.

Yup, I'm using the I45. It's very good, can get my fsb up to 500 with the x3320. My old IP35E was hitting a wall at around FSB470.

Shawn - you're welcome. Best of luck with it smile.gif

Yupz this is very true though. I45 is very fussy - any settings wrong = cannot boot or BSOD. IP35E whatever settings also most of the time can boot one =p

Can anyone comment on this spec? Not for overclocking though.

mobo = gigabyte EP45-DS3R (ATI CrossFire supported)

vga = GTX260 Gigabyte 896M D3 / Gainward HD 4870 HDMI 512MB DDR5 Golden Sample

processor = Q9450 2.66ghz 1333fsb 12mb cache

ram = 4gb Team Xtreem Dark Series PC8500

hdd = WD 160gb 8mb sata2(main) WD 640gb 16mb sata2 (storage)

casing = cooler master cm-690

psu = gigabyte odin pro 550w truepower

lcd monitor = Asus MK241H

dvdwriter = LG

If it is ok im going get this spec but will decide on graphic card when i get to the shop =)

ur ram no need pc6400 lor... since no oc.. you don't need it since no oc.. u can run 3.2ghz on stock vcore easily.. which is 400x8 only 800mhz for ram.. i think u need better psu for future upgrades like crossfire or such..

My comments:
1. IceMocha is right. Using the Team RAM is a waste - just go with DDR2-800 since no overclocking.
2. 4870 has better price/performance.
3. Use the 640GB as the primary Windows drive. It is faster than the 160GB.
4. Better PSU is a good idea too. I recomment the Corsair TX650 or 750.

why don't u try running prime95 to test its stability. we all hope we can achieve the lowest vcore with stability. it's not necessary to pump vcore excessively, coz it will shorten your cpu's life.

Glock - it's very subjective. One processor may be able to do 443 at 1.175v, another not. Try tweaking your GTL refs, Vmch and Vtt.

Hmm that's not the case on my Tpower. When you enter Voltage Control under the O.N.E menu you should have the voltage setting page for all the different items like Vcore, Vdimm etc in +0.1 or +0.25 increments right?

Sorry for the slightly imprecise description, but the Tpower system is with my gf now - I took back my QX system haha. I do remember very clearly that it was possible to give my RAM pretty high voltage though - at least 6 increments of +0.1.

Hmm that's not the case on my Tpower. When you enter Voltage Control under the O.N.E menu you should have the voltage setting page for all the different items like Vcore, Vdimm etc in +0.1 or +0.25 increments right?

Ohh I got it la. These are the BIOS screenshots:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=189234

The +1.85v you mention is -in addition- to the default voltage. So to set your Vdimm to 2.0, you set the Voltage Control to +0.2.

Default voltage 1.8+0.2 = 2.0 =p

In O.N.E you'll find a setting called FSB(Bsel) To NorthBridge Latch. Set this to FSB1333. Now you should have a setting under DRAM frequency that corresponds to 1:1.

Told you I45 BIOS was way more complicated than IP35E =p

Xeons are available for 3 different sockets - 775, 771 and 604.

Most of Intel's desktop Core 2 processors have an identical Xeon SKU, for example Xeon E3110 = E8400 and X3320 = Q9300.

Yeah Tpower is the world record holding board for FSB.

1.4v, 1.45v 3.75Ghz. Also both GTLs have to be at 0.67 for 3.75Ghz.

I just change my motherboard to TPower I45 this morning. Overclocking on X3320 seem much easier smile.gif

In 10minutes i hit 3.6ghz with this setting. But i not sure is it suitable for 24/7 run.

FSB : 480MHz
PCI-E Clock : 101MHz

VCore : +0.250 (1.4V)
VDIMM : +0.200 (2.00V)
VChipset : +0.225(1.325V)
VFSB : +0.300 (1.4V)
Core1 GTL Ref : 0.63*VTT
Core2 GTL Ref : 0.67*VTT
MCH GTL Ref : 0.64*VTT
PLL : 1.5(stock)

Seem like reducing the GLT Ref or Vcore will give me error during IBT. Perhaps later will try break 500FSB wall. rclxm9.gif

1.4v but during IBT , the voltage drop till 1.35v+.

By using RealTemp, the max reading temp is 87C.

87C is the peak temperature. Most of the time idling at 60C and load at 70C. laugh.gif I believe the sensor problem because my heatsink dont even feel warm. rclxub.gif

Now i still figuring out how the GTL work. Is it good to run GTL at *0.69 all the time? biggrin.gif

Wah abang it time to break 500FSB . Pump your GTL to 0.69 and your chipset/vcore/FSB voltage to +0.4v flex.gif .
With 0.63-0.67 i able to hit 485FSB .

No leh, i just simply bought this from pinpinmao. I think it's so so only ler. I tried pushing it to 3.6ghz. but can't seem to boot into windows at 1.29v. i didn't dare to put it over 1.3v, as my cooling is not so good and more over, i'm not in an air con room. tkh bro, how much vcore can u achieve if u do 3.5ghz? can u still remember?

same goes for my Q9450, after tkh_1001 bro asked me to try pushing my Q9450 to 3.6ghz, so i thought i will give it a try.

currently doing 3.5ghz @ 1.22v happily

erm...just add vcore first... if adding vcore any higher wont give u stability then only u start adding vtt or vnb.....

then adjust ur memory to run at 1:1

basically u need a try to look for stability by increasing 0.5ghz at a time (preferably)... not terus jump to 3.3ghz... this way u will know roughly how much vcore u need for every settings thumbup.gif

Oh and sorry that we have ignored ur question. No, definitely not ur psu. Not for ur corsair at least. Corsair 620w psu is currently the most reliable and stable efficiency psu in the market. Saw ur rig's specs, i would say is the proc's limitation as well as mobo's setting. Have u played with the rest of the setting?

Man that's a good vcore for 3.75ghz. Either it's a good chip or the mobo is doing the trick?

Thanks man. Not many tips, just upped Vcore/Vtt/GTL as usual. Temp is around 80C IBT (though it can go as high as 88C!), Prime 68-70C on a CCF.

Been tweaking here and there for this processor, made my reinstall my vista few times cos it somehow screw up my hard disk indexes while overclock. Gave up trying to break the 4ghz barrier, maybe will do it when I am free for a week sweat.gif

Well this is the screen shot, target at 3.6ghz and below 1.25vcore.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Did IBT 20 runs without problems and also have prime it for few hours without errors.

My max I tried to boost was 475 x 8 which result in 3.8ghz. Managed to let it run stable but anything higher just require damn alot of additional vcore and vNB + vFSb.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Did not spend much time tweaking on Gtl section yet, hopefully tuning Gtl can yield a lower vcore compare to now heh.

Sorry about that, just changed my ram to corsair dominator 8500 (first picture) ..my previous ram xms2 6400 only able to hit the max of 950 mhz , with loose timing of coz ( look at the second picture, that is using xms2 ).

@3.5ghz the temp idle is around 47c, prime load maximum goes to 69c , IBT @ 72c. In an non aircond room.

@3.8ghz the idle temp is around 50c, IBT load goes as high as 80c, prime at 77c. Non aircond room.

what cooler are u using for your Q9450 bro? Your Q9450 seems to be performing almost the same as my recently sold Q9450. mine did 3.5hz comfortably at approx 48c/65c idle/load with prime @ 1.225v.

woah, load at 80c with IBT, sheeeet... i dun even dare touch that temp region. shocking.gif nanti your chip kena fried instantly tongue.gif

Using Sunbeam CCF to cool my CPU currently. Been giving good temperatures so far, but I think it can go better if I can manage my CPU casing cables and airflow properly. Currently trying to lower the vCore , vNB, vTT to as low as possible while making sure to keep it stable @3.5ghz. Last night I managed to drop another 0.1vcore to it, hopefully can still be reduced.

Btw, metsatsu what is your highest clock speed for q9450 ? Is it really possible to break 4.0ghz for q9450 ?

the highest clock i ever managed to get was only 3.6ghz. but not bcoz the chip had reached its limit but i think it was due to my cooler and mobo. even at 3.6ghz was rather shaky. coz my idle temp was like 59c which was 10c more than my 3.5ghz idle temp. 1.325v was needed to bump it from 3.5ghz to 3.6ghz lol.

I think StrikerII Formula should hav the GTL setting.
It might be in different naming.

Your vTT is high.
Do not exceed 1.4v.

Try playing w upping the vNB and vCore.

How about ram timing? You leave it "Auto" also??
Mind to provide Memset screenie?

1. Set Command Rate to "2T"
2. Ram timing better use Manual.
3. Ram ratio make it 1:1 first
4. vTT should be 1.1x for 45nm iianm.

Use latest Memset and reattach again. tongue.gif

okay guys..

my 2nd day got my hand of this Quadie 9550..
no time to test and playing with bios..
just
1)change pci/pcie freq to 37.6 (burn my ex graphic card coz forgot about this setting)
2) set mem divider to 1:1
3) just try fsb 400..than 433 and lastly stop at this 443.9FSB

other setting just leave to auto..

and guess what..
the bios just crank up the voltage to 1.520 volt o load..
and temp as show by OCCT go as high as 85C..
core temp show 76C.

so which one show the actual value for the temp..
pls enlighten me

ps:
yeap..
i know i need another cooler for sure..
