guys.. should i sell my d40 and upgrade to d50 ?? lol..
i know it is not much of a upgrade.. but really didn't have much budget for d80, or d90.. lol.. reason to d50, of coz is for the AF-motor, I can try those old, nice optics and cheap lenses.. more AF-points, slightly bigger, top panel LCD looks more pro.. reasnon not to d50, second hand unit, LCD smaller, miss my d40 haizz... QUOTE(darthbaboon @ Sep 24 2008, 10:07 PM) Still thinking on the lens. A little tired of the 17-50 range, plus the 50 is covered by the 50mm f1.8. Liked the 28-70 Nikon a whole lot... 24-70 would be even better and Siggy just released theirs with HSM so still deep in thought. not when you have high ISO I like the 18-105 range but absolutely dislike the variable aperture. Horrible for indoor events in my experience. |

hi guys and gals
i am noodle and i am a nikonian. i just got my d40 last friday and im loving it! i do have one small question. whats up with "P-mode". It suppose to be programmed auto exposure mode but i cant seem to change the aperture or shutter speed by turning the command dial. when i turn it it goes to P* but the photo taken is almost exactly the same. Does P mode allow me to change only the exposure compensation, white balance, flash compensation, colour balance...etc... but not the aperture and shutter speed? i guess if i wanted to change aperture or shutter speed i shud just use the other modes. thanks.. Added on September 25, 2008, 11:37 ami got this of ken rockwells site... so confusing... because it doesnt change the aperture and shutter speed combination when i turn the dial. ive tried in good lightning too.. --------------- P: Program I use "P" for program auto exposure. In this mode the camera chooses the f/stop and shutter speed for you. If I want different apertures or shutter speeds I rotate the rear command dial, which selects alternate combinations of f/stops and shutter speeds which give the same exposure. Nikon calls this "Program Shift." An asterisk ( * ) shows up next to the P on the top LCD to let you know you've chosen a different combination for exposure. The asterisk doesn't appear in the finder, but you can see the apertures and shutter speeds. The asterisk goes away when you return to the standard combinations. The standard combinations are f/1.4 @ 1/8, f/2 @ 1/15, f/2.8 @ 1/30, f/4 at 1/60, f/5.6 @ 1/125, f/8 @ 1/250, f/11 @ 1/500, etc. " -------------- This post has been edited by noodle: Sep 25 2008, 11:37 AM |

P almost like Auto mode already. You can't change most of the thing besides exposure compensation. Yes, you can't change aperture and shutters speed. If you want to control the both, you need to use M mode. |

Ken Rockwell did not lie. The P* mode will change aperture and shutter speed to achieve the same exposure.
It would not look radically different because the camera will still adjust accordingly to get the same outcome. |

Programmed Auto (Flexible)
In this mode the camera automatically selects aperture and shutter speed based on the current metered exposure value, exposure compensation and selected ISO sensitivity. The Program AE on the D40 is flexible, which means that you can select one of a variety of equal exposures by turning the command dial. Example: • 1/50 F5.6 (turn left a click) P* • 1/60 F5 (turn left a click) P* • 1/80 F4.5 (metered) P • 1/100 F4 (turn right a click) P* • 1/125 F3.5 (turn right a click) P* |

Using P mode doesn't make you pathetic. Using M mode all the time doesn't make you a pro. It all depends on the shooting situation and what you want to achieve.
