hi guys and gals

i am noodle and i am a nikonian. rclxms.gif

i just got my d40 last friday and im loving it!

i do have one small question. whats up with "P-mode". It suppose to be programmed auto exposure mode but i cant seem to change the aperture or shutter speed by turning the command dial. when i turn it it goes to P* but the photo taken is almost exactly the same.

Does P mode allow me to change only the exposure compensation, white balance, flash compensation, colour balance...etc... but not the aperture and shutter speed?

i guess if i wanted to change aperture or shutter speed i shud just use the other modes.

thanks..

Added on September 25, 2008, 11:37 ami got this of ken rockwells site... so confusing... because it doesnt change the aperture and shutter speed combination when i turn the dial. ive tried in good lightning too..

---------------
P: Program

I use "P" for program auto exposure. In this mode the camera chooses the f/stop and shutter speed for you. If I want different apertures or shutter speeds I rotate the rear command dial, which selects alternate combinations of f/stops and shutter speeds which give the same exposure. Nikon calls this "Program Shift." An asterisk ( * ) shows up next to the P on the top LCD to let you know you've chosen a different combination for exposure. The asterisk doesn't appear in the finder, but you can see the apertures and shutter speeds. The asterisk goes away when you return to the standard combinations. The standard combinations are f/1.4 @ 1/8, f/2 @ 1/15, f/2.8 @ 1/30, f/4 at 1/60, f/5.6 @ 1/125, f/8 @ 1/250, f/11 @ 1/500, etc. "

You can't change shutter speed and aperture in P mode. smile.gif

Ken Rockwell did not lie. The P* mode will change aperture and shutter speed to achieve the same exposure.

It would not look radically different because the camera will still adjust accordingly to get the same outcome.

still confused blush.gif icon_question.gif

surely the depth of field will change with each setting?

but when i shift it to P* the aperture and shutter speed shown on the display doesnt change at all.
