Thanks GamersFamilia and SSJBen... am downloading it onto my PC now.

Oh, another really silly question - I was going through the instructions for Resistance, it seems there should be a little compartment next to the BD slot, which flips open to reveal MS, SD and a variety of input slots. Err.... how come mine doesnt flip open!? Also checked the user manual and there's nothing on it. The only inputs are the USB slots at the bottom of this hidden lid ???

The 80GB you have bought implies to the core-80GB, which only have 2 USB ports and no card readers.

The previous old-80GB has 4 USB ports and card readers. So don't worry there. If you need a sort means of using a card reader, you can always pick up an all-in-one USB card reader from many computer shops and use that as well. You can of course also buy extra USB port hubs to connect it to your PS3 if you need extra USB ports as well.

Thank you SSJBen for your reply
Below is a low quality pic of my Philips LCD TV

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

As seen here, my TV has DVI, PC and HD connector. No HDMI.
What should I do with the audio connector next to the DVI?? I don't think a DVI-HDMI cable has an audio jack. Neither does my PS3 has a audio output.
*
Connect your PS3 to your TV by buying a HDMI-DVI cable. Then use the existing AV composite cable which came with the PS3 and connect the stereo cables to the audio input beside the DVI.

Make sure to set this under your PS3 system settings:

Video Settings > HDMI > [Your TV's resolution]
Audio Settings > A/V Input

That should solve things up.
Also btw, thanks for showing me the pic. I never did knew there was a Phillips LCD TV with DVI input but not HDMI. notworthy.gif

Thanks for the reply. Really do appreciate it. It just shows that my TV is old, that's all. Just found out yesterday before I sleep that I can actually use a HDMI-DVI adapter instead, and connect with my existing HDMI cable.

Need to understand more about the audio decoding for PS3.

I have a 32'LCD, Old Denon Amp (which is only doing AC3 or dolby Digital) with No sub output.

Now the question is that If I would like to purchase the BD can I still get atleast a normal Digital Decode sound?

As I am planning to get a new amp but the one I am looking at is Yamaha 863 or Onkyo 606. The problem is that this two amp cost about 3k. Don't really want to spend this kind of money. As all my speaker is not proper for HT. Still need to save some money for speaker and cable.

I understand that Yamaha 663 also have HDMI cable in and out but it is only passing and not doing any upscale. Is it worth it to get 663 or the 863/606. Please advice

Cross Color Reduction Filter is used for Composite and S-Video connection. It reduces flickering issues when connected to an interlaced source of input, which infact is the traditional CRT TV. Doesn't matter if you leave it on or off either ways.

RGB Full Range is basically Deep Color. It provides your visuals on screen to have a higher contrast, improving black levels in a game/movie. You'll need a HDMI 1.3a cable(which I assume you already do?) and an input source HDMI being 1.3.

Super-white improves brightness levels when you have RGB Full enabled. Its one of the features upon HDMI 1.3, so just enable it if you can.

Use optical cable?

Are you implying that your Denon amp doesn't have optical in?

Works another way round.

PS3 can only upscale games to 1080p if it has proper support for it. While most new PS3 games have it, older games like Resistance, R&C: TOD, Uncharted, Genji, Heavenly Sword(I'm not sure on this one) and even some PSN games cannot be upscaled to 1080p. They're locked on 720p.

No PS3 games as of yet has native 1080p as its res.

so regarding hdmi:

ps3's at the moment are equipped with hdmi 1.3, so you have the options of RGB Full Range being optimized. so to take advantage of hdmi 1.3, i must specifically have a hdmi 1.3 cable?

or are all hdmi cables the same?

what did u mean 'works another way round'?

my only question, if we have a ps3 with games/movies capable of 1080p, we doesnt need to worry that an AVR has the abilty to upscale or not right??

No sure whether my denon have any optical in as is a 10 year old model. Denon 8xx. What i wish to learn is that if I am just using the avi cable can the amp still do the decode? or I have to get the optical or HDMI cable in order for the amp to be able to decode?

Yes you need a HDMI 1.3 cable. Older HDMI 1.0 doesn't work with Deep Color.

I think most if not all HDMI cables sold now a days are 1.3 though, its already a standard. Just double check before you make your purchase.

We actually do. Some games NEED to be "forced" into 1080p if you want it upscaled. DMC4 is one of those prime examples despite the fact it doesn't even support upscaled 1080p in the first place.

If its a 10 year old model, I'm pretty sure that it doesn't even have HDMI input. 10 years ago HDMI wasn't even spoke of yet.

It should I think have optical in, double check.

Yes HDMI is not there but not sure about the optical will check it out tonight.

If no optical meaning does that means if I buy a BD then I can't use the PS3 to decode and use my amp to do the job?

hey i got a prob i can't seem to solve sad.gif

my audio is channeled out using HDMI to my lcd monitor, and i've connected 3.5mm audio cable from lcd monitor audio output to my 2.1 speakers.

i get good sound, but the only problem is it has this fading in effect whenever anything with audio starts. and the fading in usually starts a few seconds late. so if let's say i load a game which has an opening movie, the movie will play with no sound at all first, and then after a few seconds, the sound comes fading in from soft, right up to normal volume. so usually i'll miss the first few seconds of audio. it's nothing big but it's getting abit annoying, especially when there's in-game cutscenes and you want to catch the dialogue in the beginning.

same effect happens in the XMB front panel. when i move around my cursor to the different icons slowly, no sound. but when i start moving fast enough, making it generating more sound back to back, then the fading in starts.

any idea how to solve this?

much appreciated smile.gif

^ i'm not familiar with lcd monitor and how their HDMI pass-through works, mb there's some settings u need to adjust on ur lcd?

anyway, i suggest u connect the PS3 output sound directly to the 2.1 speaker and see if the problem recurs. use a Y-adaptor, picts are on 1st page.

alright, thanks mate. i've just downloaded and installed the new v2.43 for ps3 earlier this morning, but haven't tested the audio yet. will try later to see if it was a bug-related issue. if it's not, then i'll get the y-adaptor.
