If you downloaded a DLC, no matter free or paid, it will be associated to that PSN ID. You can view your download list and download it from there for unlimited times, even if the listing has been removed from the PSN Store, given that the PSN ID can only be active on up to 5 PS3s. That is the loophole that DLC sharers use.

SingStar DLCs are more convoluted if compared to other titles because SingStar DLCs are cross-region compatible. However SingStar songs can only be downloaded onto one PS3, meaning that the 5-machine rule doesnt apply(not shareable). The songs can be used by all users on that machine though.

OK. Let's take SingStar as an example. Let's say I'm using my PSN ID, xxx to download a particular song.

After that, maybe I want to backup the songs to a safe storage, and put it into another PS3, but still use the same PSN ID, xxx.
Will I be able to do that? This might be a case whereby your existing PS3 was broken or spoiled for any reason, and you have a new unit.

I'm trying to understand the DRM system that Sony use with regards to the DLCs, and to what extent they are being used.

Actually the 5-system limit is Sony's planning from the beginning to help users. If your PS3 is broken/bricked, you can redownload it from the PSN store using the new PS3, so 2 slots of 5 are used. If your old PS3 is still functioning, there is an option on the XMB to deactivate the PSN ID on that machine, giving back 1 slot to your quota. Of course, by doing so all DLCs associated with that ID will stop from functioning on that machine. If the PS3 is broken beyond repair, the 1 slot might be lost forever or you can call the customer service to deauth/deactivate your ID from that broken PS3.

The problem with PS3 backup feature is a backup created by that particular PS3 can only be restored on the same PS3. The only way to transfer DLCs to new PS3 is by redownloading.

For SingStar, because of music company licensing that limits the DLCs to be on only one machine, the only way to transfer DLCs is by contacting customer support. This is because the DLCs will be locked to that machine forever. They will detach the songs from the PSN ID and then refunding the money into that account's PSN wallet. Then users will be able to re-purchase songs onto the new PS3.

Thanks for the elaborate explanation. Now I understand the concept. So as for conclusion, those DLC downloaded, when you mentioned that it can be restored on the same PS3, this means that the DLC is somehow is being identified by some unique identifier,e.g. PS3 serial number or MAC address, right? I'm planning to upgrade to a bigger hard disk also, so would like to know more about the proper backup procedure especially with regards to DLC.

No worries. I dont know how the PS3 stores the data but I guess they have their own way on identifying the locked DLCs etc tongue.gif
If upgrading HDD on the same PS3, you can choose to either backup or redownload the DLCs smile.gif
For games with hueg patches (GT5P), I'll leave them on the game data but for the mandatory installs from BD (lol capcom), I'll just delete from the game data folder to keep the backup size small.

Case 1: Same PSN ID on different machine's case
=================================

According to Wikipedia:

"The ability to use PlayStation Store content licenses for re-download is limited to five different PlayStation 3 consoles."

So the slot will be only be counted once you re-downloaded the same content, am I right? And re-downloading only applies for the same PSN ID.

Case 2: Different PSN ID on same machine's case
=================================

A bit confused with snipersnake's case. Does it mean if we download using ID "A" and then it can be reused by ID "B" on the same machine? Does a seperate purchase necessary for different ID on the same machine? because earlier you mentioned that DLC no matter paid or free, will be tied in to your PSN ID.

Thanks in advance.

Case 1: I'm not sure on that. Maybe the 2nd slot is used up immediately if you sign in on the 2nd PS3, or it waits until you download the content associated with that ID from the PSN Store.

Case 2: For 99% of the time, [citation needed tongue.gif] once a DLC has been activated on a PS3, all other users/IDs on that PS3 automatically have access to the content, as in the local usage (not tied to their ID/account). 1-user-locked DLCs such as Warhawk PSN & GT5P EU PSN cannot be accessed by other users/ID on the same PS3.

Make sure you get 60.* IP. Usually this is a good IP. No lag.
