I own a hp microserver and DS411j. Microserver at my house and 411j at my office. Both served me well, but the synology is abit exp... around rm1.5k for a NAS.

the microserver with 4G ram add on and a hd5450 then it run smooth as a server. Im more on the microserver side coz it is more powerful than the synology (MS Server 2008 R2 vs Diskstation)

yup three cheers for the microserver. nas plus htpc combination value for money in a small footprint. And its quite frugal on power too.

For a PC environment, don't think so it has any issues but if to use with a NAS drive, many have compatibility issues due to this new formatting system/technology or whatsoever that causes the complications.

Yes RAID 0 on 100mbps is overkill
One hard disk will surely exceed 10MB/s easily on write/read, while 100mbps lan won't even sustain that high. So RAID 0 is useless on 100mbps lan

Yes, nowadays hard disk speed can easily exceed 50MB/s (slowest part of the hard disk) so even Gigabit LAN has no problem, the only problem is the NAS network chipset and CPU processing power thats handle the network I/O loads, those are the common bottleneck.

Hello Guy,

I need some advise from you guy for selecting a NAS.

Currently I have Seagate Ext. 2gb and PC in NTFS format.

I need to NAS can be easy setup and less maintain in future (due to not so much knowledge for maintain it...), and can fulfill below:

a) 4 bays 2GB HDDs
b) Recover Solution (Maximum Storage)
c) 24 Hours Operation
d) Manage communicate with UPS for auto shut down when power down
e) Mainly for Entertainment Files Storage (learn to BT also...)

Current in mind have Synology & Qnap,

1) Can recommend which model are better and suitable to me?
2) Is that any promotion currently?
3) I wish to get it on this coming saturday 18 Jun.
4) And wish to use Amex to buy it. (Which shop can accept Amex?)

Thanks for assist...

Either 1 will do the job. If you looking which 1 more popular in here, than count the user here. NAS seldom see any promotion. Maybe can get the 2nd hand.

That's correct if you're running 1 or 2 hardisks. But if you start running 4x hardisk, the bottleneck will be the Gigabit LAN.

Wish I'm running 10GBe because my transfers saturate at 120MB/s across my network.

May be a little late but what budget do you have? The two brands above (even though nice) are VERY expensive and if you're just using it for media / entertainment files, RAID 5 is overkill in my opinion. Setting up the Microserver is super easy actually and very much cheaper. Put an OS in and you should be fine. I have one with 4 x 2TB in RAID 0 setup for space and another eSATA 4 bay casing with 4 x 2TB drives also in RAID 0 connected to it. The Microserver is connected on my home network running Gigabit LAN. Now that I know that the Microserver can be had for RM 900, I'm thinking of getting another.

In my opinion, media / entertainment files do not need redundancy. May be a slight hassle but these files can be downloaded again if required.
