I think before. But the power consumption is killing me. So scrap my project and get the synoloy NAS.
beside power consumption, is there any cost advantage by using custom built NAS? I think there are intel low power platform floating around in the market.
alot of the discussions here focuses on ready build NAS systems... Is there anyone who build their own NAS systems that packs into a small form factor and yet comes below the price of a branded ready build NAS?
For eg, QNAS and Synology 4 drive NAS comes at about 2k - 3k (is it inclusive of the drive?) .
I'm askig this because i'm working on building a low power storage for my house... 6 rooms with gigabit network ready + DNLA streaming... Gonna be packing the NAS up in the attic area where all my cables terminate.
yeah, not many here interested on building their own NAS. I also found that ready made nas is too expensive and it also came without hardrive. And also most of ready NAS are using modified linux os and charge us more expensive than a decent laptop with windows on it.
The HP microserver seems the best bang among other NAS. Except, it doesnt have an OS installed. But that's another plus point i think. You can install linux on it or freenas perhaps. And i also have original 2k8r2 lying around. Oh my the posibilites... better than qnap or synology.
How many SATA ports does the microserver have? 4 inlcuding dvd-drive? Thinking of putting 1 2.5" for OS only. IF 4 ports, then left another 3 drives for storage.
For a simple home server usage, I think there is not much different for me to use Win 7 or Win Server 2008. Any extra benefits to use Win Server 2008? Besides isn't Win Server 2008 is heavier than Win 7?
The Microserver runs very well in Win 7 as it is very light.
The Microserver still price at RM919, with a little bit of bargaining it can be lower.
Windows Server 2008 R2 is built on windows NT6.1 which is the same with win 7. The foot print for win2k8 r2 should be much lesser than win7. Or you can opt the server core installation only. This will install 2k8 without the GUI. Just like linux server edition.
Nice find on the Youtube clip. But it does not say how many drives it's installed. My guess is that it's only measuring power at the default configuration which is with the single 160GB drive.
Anyway, no idea if the prices at the shops have increased. Let me know as I might be interested in another or perhaps get a esata RAID box connected to the current Microserver.
Price still same. Free items keyboard, mouse and dvd-rw.
and non of those expensive NAS can do dxva compare to microserver.. of course after installing HD 5450, the microserver instantly become htpc... but had to downgrade the OS from win2k8r2 to windows 7 pro now..
windows 7 professional? Full version? wont that slow the HP Microserver? 8GB ram?
Yes, full version. No slowdown. 4gb non-ECC rams. I can play full hd dxva videos on it. But of course, i added HD5450 on it. The cpu cannot handle HD videos.
Might be a little off-topic but is there a 6000 series ATI card that is able to meet the small power requirement of the Microserver? Via Remote Desktop? 720p or 1080p material? What N router is that? Why not since the Microserver is like a normal PC / server? You can upgrade the memory (up to 8GB), hardisk space and have slots to include DVR card if required.
New ati chip should draw lesser power than previous gen. And the avivo video decoder should be much efficient as well. Take the cheapest one, should work for htpc and mini pci bracket included.
Off the bat it doesnt look any different physically and spec wise. But now it looks like it is standard 2GB ECC. Other then that I is the newer processor AMD Turion™ II Model Neo N40L vs the N36L in the current model. Difference between the two processors is that N40L is 1.5GHz@15W TDP vs 1.3GHz@ 13W TDP in the N36L. Hopefully the Malaysian version will not ship with SBS 2011 Essentials pre-installed.
Hopes it comes by December
nice. internal upgrade only, but still the best and cheapest NAS ever.
Downside: 1. Require 1U PSU formfactor 2. Expensive 199.99 3. HBA card is expensive for those who limited with 2/4 sata port iTX motherboard 4. End up as costly as out of the box NAS.
