Hey all,

This NAS:

Buffalo LinkStation Duo
http://www.buffalo-asia.com/cgi-bin/produc...y&code=8&id=410

Can it be used for torrents?

Also, would an extra RM100 be worth to invest for a PRO DUO model?
*
Should be since there's the BitTorrent logo there. RM100 for PRO DUO seems fine since you'll get some extra software features and also a faster CPU in it allowing a faster transfer speed etc.

How slow? Mine is about 5-7MB/s which should be quite normal for my 100mbps LAN network.

agreed.

10/100 switch - theoretically max speed is 12.5MB/s but normally will be vary from 5 to 9MB/s ( this speed will lower if you using Wireless)

10/100/1000 switch - theoretically max speed is 125MB/s but normally will be vary from 60 to 95MB/s ( this speed will lower if you using Wireless) ( around 100GB ~140GB per hours when you transfer form PC to NAS with gigabit LAN)

You mean using G lan network? That is quite low speed.

I get about 11MB/s using wifi transfer while 65-75Mb/s using lan.

G LAN? Gigabit? No, 100mbps is not gigabit, have plans to bump it up to gigabit in the future but a lot of equipments needs to be changed, from my router to all my homeplugs. sweat.gif

Sorry, I mean g/g+ or N type router which can transfer higher speed. I m using this g+ type before and the speed is pretty fast.

just change one by one, the switch change to Gigabit first ( 8 port should be RM 1xx) or wireless N+ router ( but if you NB wireless device is g than the speed still stay at g).

Don't have a switch, currently my NAS is connected to my router inside a "store room", my other computers and media players connect to the NAS and router via homeplugs, I think I have a total of 4 homeplugs. A gigabit homeplug is about RM130 (so 4 units about RM520) while a gigabit router is about RM200+ (the one I'm aiming for) so total damage over RM700 to convert to a gigabit network setup. laugh.gif

Hi All,

Just a have a few general questions regarding NAS. Currently, I have a Buffalo Link Station Pro Duo, which so far has been easy to set up, Inside is 2 2TB HDDs, which I use exclusively for my movie collection.

Just would like to clarify a few things with those with more experience than myself:

1.) Is it safe to leave the NAS on 24/7, or would it be better to turn it off when not in use?

2.)As i did not set any raid function, would it be wise to purchase another linkstation, and back up to that station? As I have set 2TB for HD movies and 2TB for TV shows

3.)This question would need assistance of those familiar with the linkstation. I have a 1TB Portable HDD...formatted in NTFS, but when I connect it to the linkstation, I can read...but I can't copy. I am aware that FAT32 works, but only for files 4GB or less, I wonder if anyone would have a solution on this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes it is save and it survive more longer than ON/OFF condition. I have a NAS run for 3yrs 24/7 till now. And another 4hdd NAS for 1yrs+ 24/7. The important is maintainence. Every half of the yrs need to cleanup the dust to prevent the temperature rise and obstruct the air flow.

Would it better to change it to 4hdd raid NAS? That can give you 6tb of space. And lesser cost?

Hi Ozak, thanks for the advice, only issue is that buffalo formats the HDDs into their own format....tried taking a drive out and inserting it into a shell casing....PC and MAC cant read it.....

what if the hdd did not spoil but your server spoil? With raid5 you cannot just plug the hdd into any system and get it running again. With raid1, just plug in the hdd into any external casing and can access data instantly.

Sorry to bring up old post... I just costed what my Proliant server final cost might be.... >RM3K lol, but with 6 HDD, TV tuner and HDMI output. Anyway that is another story. I dont think I will have the time or capacity to build it anytime soon anyway, probably end of the year only.

But I got question... if assuming worst case the microserver suffers total hardware failure but the RAID 5 HDD (3 of them) are undamaged, how would I recover the data stored? is it as easy as plugging into another linux system can I can still access the system? I am planning to use linux for the server.

Hi I got my microserver, fitted out standard with the 4 bays. What bracket are you using to put on the extra 2 hdd's? Just thinking if 6 hdd's would overheat the rig? Would it?

Ive been thinking, is it possible to connect a hp laserjet 1010 to the usb port of the dlink dns-320? Im afraid that since my LJ is a host-based printer, it might not work.

A quick google search brings me to someone getting the printer to work without issues on a DNS-323, so my guess is it will work with the DNS-320

Yes should work without any issues. Quite often my HP LaserJet printer isn't listed in many devices' compatibility list but in the end, it still works without any issues. biggrin.gif

The 6 HDD should be no problem.. on other forums got ppl put more then 9 HDD with it also but they use a HW RAID card la. Hack the Bios to enable full speed SATA connection for the internal ODD SATA connection plus re-route the eSATA back into the casing and you dont have to use any RAID PCIe card u already get 6 HDD connections.

For the HDMI connection use a discrete graphics card like nvidia 520 gt or AMD 6450 so u off load the CPU to the GPU. Sound through HDMI have been reported successfully for Ubuntu for nvidia cards. nvidia 520 gt max power draw is only 8W for Blu-ray, with the 16x PCIe slot limited to 25W so you should have little problem there... unless u plan to play serious gaming on it that is another issue.

Still have not checked on anything regarding the TV tuner since that is the last thing on my list, but i will be running Ubuntu back end and either MythTV or XBMC front end once everything else is settled.

I guess the only problem is when I wan to transfer files from the server while watching HD movie and recording through the PVR at the same time I doubt the CPU have enough capacity for that. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

I need some advise from you guy for selecting a NAS.

Currently I have Seagate Ext. 2gb and PC in NTFS format.

I need to NAS can be easy setup and less maintain in future (due to not so much knowledge for maintain it...), and can fulfill below:
