Go to Digital Mall HP authorised outlet. I bought mine for RM 910. Added 4GB of ram and 4 pcs 2TB samsung hdd.. total damage about 2k. Much cheaper than buying QNAP or Synology.

with 10/100 switch, u should able to get around 6 ~9MB/s

u can log into the synology admin page and check the resource monitor and check the CPU/RAM/ network usage.

as well as check the HDD status.

BTW, how long did u use this DS211j?

few Q:

1) 10/100 LAN or wireless?
2) did u turn on CIFS performace ( go to synology admin page=> control panel -> win/Mac/NFS section ->tick the Optimize CIFS database operation)?
3) use Fix IP or DHCP for this NAS?
4) go to Storage manager -> HDD management - check did u tick the "Write cache support"
5) upgrade to latest firmware :Version: DSM 3.1-1742; Build Date: 2011/06/08

That's correct if you're running 1 or 2 hardisks. But if you start running 4x hardisk, the bottleneck will be the Gigabit LAN.

Wish I'm running 10GBe because my transfers saturate at 120MB/s across my network.
May be a little late but what budget do you have? The two brands above (even though nice) are VERY expensive and if you're just using it for media / entertainment files, RAID 5 is overkill in my opinion. Setting up the Microserver is super easy actually and very much cheaper. Put an OS in and you should be fine. I have one with 4 x 2TB in RAID 0 setup for space and another eSATA 4 bay casing with 4 x 2TB drives also in RAID 0 connected to it. The Microserver is connected on my home network running Gigabit LAN. Now that I know that the Microserver can be had for RM 900, I'm thinking of getting another.

In my opinion, media / entertainment files do not need redundancy. May be a slight hassle but these files can be downloaded again if required.

didnt know the eSATA of the microserver was port multiplier able. Did u update BIOS or anything? Do you think any port multiplier card can work?

Very observant ! rclxms.gif Yup, the onboard eSATA port on the Microserver does not support port multiplier. I had to use a 2 port Silicon Image 6Gbps eSATA PCIe x1 card that came with the external casing.

Write and read throughput not as fast as the Microserver's AMD chipset. Slightly lower but then again the Gigabit network makes everything else equal.

But what I am not too pleased about the eSATA box is that I cannot have .rar files in the same partition where I want to extract. It will hang. As long as it does not do read AND write at the same partition, it works fine.

2) Has done it already
4) ticked by default

but the speed is still the same...

highest transfer speed is 46kbps
highest cpu usage is 8%
highest memory usage is stable 34%

Added on June 21, 2011, 11:30 amalso tried the manual set ip also same speed... issit the switch/hub problem?

ic... makes more sense now. Anyway decreased speeds is expected since the single eSATA cable is bottlenecking the connection. It should still be enough if the eSATA storage is for data backup only.

Any idea if eSATA to SATA port multipliers are easy to find in lowyat? looks something like this

user posted image
eSATA to 5x SATA multiplier

if can then combine with this 4x 2.5" in 5.25" backplane hotswap casing by rerouting the eSATA back into the casing.

HI all nas sifu,

after reading so many pages here. I am consider NAS synology 211j or HP microserver.

The most important is Stream full HD (1080p) movies over LAN or Wifi through HD player, Laptop, Ipad (non HD movies) the rest are file backup. FTP, IP Camera, remote access, download megaupload and so on.

I am in apple Mac environment.

So should i got for NAS synology 211j or HP microserver. ?? if Microserver which OS suit me most ?

thanks you very much in advance

A question to you would be how much of storage you require?

The Synology will give you 4TB (or 6TB with the latest 3TB drives) while the Microserver will give you double the amount of space.

Secondly, estimated how many clients are connected concurrently and accessing the new media server simultaneously?

Max only 3 clients.

I think i have to put this down. budget issues. Need to upgrade to Airport Extreme for gigabit Lan. Otherwise i got gigabit NAS also did not serve the purpose.

Anyone know the different of Dlink DNS-320, DNS-323, DNS-325 ? i view the website it's all about the same. Also anyone know which one can stream 1080p movie without lag ? ?

thanks again in advance smile.gif

If you're on a budget, not sure about the Synology because with that kind of money, I think you can get the Microserver.

Instead of DLink, perhaps look at Buffalo Linkstation Duo. I have one setup with 2GB + 2GB in RAID 0 and no problems streaming even full Bluray over my wired Gigabit connection.

As for smooth 1080p playback, I think it boils down to having good wired connection. Gigabit connection is worth the upgrade.

Alright. just saw the comparison. the most fastest read&write speed is Buffalo Linkstation Duo follow by D-Link DNS-325 & last Buffalo Linkstation Duo.

Anyone can confirm buffalo or Dlink can do a hack or add on to make it able download megaupload ??

thanks

I have the DNS-323. It is SLOW. Very SLOOOOWWWWWW (Long transfers end up around 3-5MB/s). Don't bother getting it. Not sure about the other models though. My main NAS is a Synology DS408 (setup in RAID-5 config), and that is quite fast. Routinely get 70+MB/s transfers over a Gigabit LAN.

I also have one of those eSATA/USD3.0 boxes with 4 non-RAIDed HDs (there is a RAID version as well, but I didn't get that). Transfers over USB3 for me are usually around 70-80MB/s, but I didn't really do a true test as I usually have multiple transfers across multiple HDs happening simultaneously.

Either 1 will do the job. If you looking which 1 more popular in here, than count the user here. NAS seldom see any promotion. Maybe can get the 2nd hand.

Thanks for your reply.... rclxms.gif

Actually I'm collect some opinion from you guy with NAS experience,
for which NAS are most suitable....

Then prepare the budget money on it.
