in the military, u can advance quickly if u perform in the field. similarly, starfleet conforms to naval structure.
good question!
this is explained in the tie-in comic miniseries.
they're outside the event horizon. this is also explained in the comics.
it's still there. blackholes dont get bigger. if u noticed, u cant see the stars behind the "hole". contrary to popular beliefs, black holes are spherical, not a two dimensional like a sinkhole.
i believe this is in the comics as well.
also in the comics as well.

No, cadet = havent yet to graduated from the academy. and no they do not promote them straight to captain and given the most powerful ship in the federation.

More plotholes:
The drill lands RIGHT ON TOP of starfleet headquarters and you know they panic they do nothing and left it to kirk and sulu to destroy it with f***ing phaser rifles.

Kirk being chased by a subterranean monster that is furless on an icyplanet. we know kirk cant die, chase scene was made just for the sake of making it. Hell, none of the characters felt like it was in any danger at any point.

The odds of kirk finding old spock AND them finding scotty on some derelict planet? wow

A supernova destroying many star systems and romulus? really.

event horizon of a blackhole is you know RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT. and if the 2 man-made blackholes after it ate the planet/ship were still there, you would know its there cos it'll start sucking up everything.

--

I guess I have to read the comics to understand the rest of it.

And for the plotholes and bad science in the older ST movies, it was the frakking 60s. Newer ones dont go too "way out there". ST science is the only scifi that has science roots.

What you guys said is correct. In order to appeal to the masses, they need to do like a POW BAM WHOA BOOM scene every 5 mins or people get bored. Its kinda sad isnt it?

ST movies used to promote thinking, educate even. I remember watching Insurrection and think about social / rights issues. I remember watching Voyager and wikipedia-ing all the science stuff I dont understand and in turn learn about said phenomenon or whatever technology that was mentioned. It was the thing that made me interested in science, to know about string theory etc etc.

Its sad that kids and people generally have an attention span of a monkey and only want to be entertained by flashy special effects and explosions in every scene. Do everyone actually park their brains outside the cinema before they enter? or do they leave it in the car?

if i recall correctly, the biggest perk of passing the kobayashi maru test is being promoted to ensign. nobody have ever passed it before as it has no winnable situation. kirk "cheated", although it is within parameters, but not apparent yet during the trial. while the trial is still pending due to the attack by nero, he was promoted to first officer by captain pike. with the absence of captain pike and spock out of commission, he was the acting captain for a brief period of time where he excelled.

yes, this version of kirk excelled much faster than the original kirk.

by the way, this film does have its scientific merits, it's just not embedded in the movie. i've just bought the 4 issue comic miniseries, and it does give u a more detailed idea of what's going on, where and how certain things came the way it is. if u're interested:

kirk didnt actually pass it however and was put on suspension. but yes the chain of command seemed non-existant. pike decision to promote kirk from nothing to something. command was passed to so many people so many times...

Okay now it starts to make some sense... I will need to read this comic mini series.

I beg to differ. Trek fans complain a lot about the action, always saying "this is not what Star Trek is all about!"

This is what the movies are all about. Ever since The Wrath of Khan, the best Trek movies have always been fast-paced outer space action-adventures. You want scientific exploration plus social issues, watch the various TV series. A movie has to be, first and foremost, fun.

Otherwise you end up with the very first Trek movie - Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Do you remember how that turned out?

i remember. that was the most boring sci-fi movie i ever watched. i fell asleep half-way thru the movie. man, that was boring and i am glad the jj abrams didn't follow that boring direction. no wonder, that movie was such a massive flop back then. boring to the max!!!

pike promoted kirk simply because he knows what the kid is capable of. by right kirk has shown the highest aptitude within his ranks since the day he joined Starfleet. frankly speaking, he was born to become a rebellious captain of Starfleet.

yes. i do agree you need to expand your readings to comics in order to understand what the hell is goin on. call it the "whole experience".

Sorry I didnt see any wau!!! wah!!!!! in the movie.
maybe i know too much or watch too much of star trek.

But the mini comics really give a good explanation of what happens b4 the movie....i guess i am right.

The pace is just too fast without lots of explanation.....

The directors just like to show boom boom bang bang + high speed drop zone

It was rather entertaining though I kinda agree with the movie having loads of plot holes.

Adding to the insult, Kirk makes Captain officially for defeating the Romulans and saving Earth while Pike makes Admiral for getting caught and 'tells' the enemy how to bypass the defenses? laugh.gif that part had me laughing in the end...

Never really caught on to the TV series but I never missed any of the movies. I watched all of them when there were shown on the big screens.

That's the reason they cannot make another Star Trek movie like the first one. It was actually a very good sci-fi movie but I guess it will not appeal to people who don't even know what's Voyager. To say that this movie is the best Star Trek movie is an insult. Its a good popcorn movie and a good reboot of the franchise and great cast with a lot of potentions but I really hope they pay more attention to the story line in next one instead of focusing so much on special effects and action.

Anyway, a little off topic, check out this Star Trek gear:-

Kirk and the Green Hulk ?

That's nowhere near something called "sex scene". The mannerism was actually humorous and definitely just PG-13.

The movie rocks. However, Winona Ryder is a miscast as Spock mother. Too bad

The movie is so polished.

Its like grandpa shining his 76' Corvette again and again and again until it looks damn shiny even though classic.

Theres only about 4 characters I can remember from star trek.

Spock
Kirk
Scott (thanks to the famous "Beam me up Scotty")
Picard.

What happened to Picard? He used to be the Captain of the USS Enterprise before Kirk right? O_O
