there are only two timelines now: the original star trek and this new movie. TNS, DSN, voyager, enterprise and all the other movies fall into the original timeline, just at different point of time.

In the Star Trek universe, there's actually several timeline. Of course the main original Star Trek is considered as main timeline but over the years there are a few tv episodes that deals with alternate timeline. Heck, there's even a timeline where the Federation is an evil empire and the other aliens such as Vulcans, Romulans, Klingons, etc were fighting a losing battle against humans. By the way, I think the old Spock from this movie did not even come from the original Star Trek timeline because in the original timeline, we know that Romulans still exist in TNG.

Anyway, its a damn good movie since it pleases both Trekkers like me and managed to attract non-Trekkers. The only problem was there a few holes in plotlines but nobody really bothers with it.

i remember. that was the most boring sci-fi movie i ever watched. i fell asleep half-way thru the movie. man, that was boring and i am glad the jj abrams didn't follow that boring direction. no wonder, that movie was such a massive flop back then. boring to the max!!!

That's the reason they cannot make another Star Trek movie like the first one. It was actually a very good sci-fi movie but I guess it will not appeal to people who don't even know what's Voyager. To say that this movie is the best Star Trek movie is an insult. Its a good popcorn movie and a good reboot of the franchise and great cast with a lot of potentions but I really hope they pay more attention to the story line in next one instead of focusing so much on special effects and action.

Anyway, a little off topic, check out this Star Trek gear:-

if i recall correctly, DS9 and voyager is during the same time, but both is slightly after TNG.

Its all during the same timeline. DS9 happens somewhere in the middle of TNG time whereas Voyager happens slightly after that. The only difference between Voyager and Enterprise is it happen in different quadrant.

actually, there is an explanation, but not in the movies. it's in the tie-in comic books.

romulans is exactly the same in this movie as in the rest of the star trek world. romulans stemmed from the same biological background as the vulcans, but they moved to a different planet a couple of thousand years ago and have evolved independently ever since. during that time, the vulcans developed the logic religion, while romulans keep to their ancestor's more violent and free-for-all ways.

actually, we dont see other romulans in this movie other than those on the narada (nero's ship).

the reason why nero looks very different is bcoz after their home planet destroyed in the future, nero and his crew went on a rampage. they killed the romulans high council bcoz they failed to stop the planet from being destroyed. they wiped out a fleet of klingon ships who're defending their turf. then they wanted to kill spock bcoz he also failed to save the planet. in doing so, nero became a rogue entity. they shaved their heads to purge themselves, and tattooed themselves to remind them of their lost. also, nero has a bite mark on his face, which he got on a klingon prison planet. this will be in the deleted scenes.

Also, the reason why nero's ship which is just a mining ship is so powerful is because its fitted with Borg's tech.
