i just saw this. it's brilliant. totally different from other "lame-ass" star trek movies of the recent years. although i dont think it rivals wrath of khan, but it's definitely the top 3 star trek movies in my list.

it doesnt try too hard to shove the scifi elements that have become the identity of star trek into the audience. there are lots of dialogues on science and technology stuffs, but most of it were not exactly core to the plot, which was to my wife's relief. simply put, it's very satisfying for a trekkie like me, but it's not too hard to catch up for an absolute trek noob like my wife.

fun fun movie! reminds me of the jokes from Star Trek 6.
And Sylar's just SO Spock!! Can't imagine another actor as Spock

But a few complaints tho...
1) Certain scenes goncang too much till pening.
2) A little uncomfortable with the pretty major changes to the Trek storyline
3) Where's the main Star Trek theme?!?!?! Waited for the credits to end but still didn't hear it sad.gif
*
2) which major changes would that be?
3) it was played during the main credits (the one with galaxy montage).

if this film is considered canon in the star trek universe, then the rest of the star trek spinoffs (the next generation, deep space nine, voyager) except enterprise simply did not happen. brilliant, bcoz i totally dont mind a new star trek tv-series of the original generation.

the problem is, to get the cast to play a tv-series might be too much to ask. well, atleast i could hope for several sequals to this film.

Yeah, U might be right, but I think it would be kinda nice if they can make a new TV series based on this "Alternate Trek Universe"...

I'm happy that they've oredi confirmed a sequel scheduled for a 2011 release... rclxms.gif

that's great.

i'd love to see how the new federation evolves without most of the founding members - the vulcans.

TOS, TNG, DSN, VYR timeline will still continue. As mentioned in the movie by Spock I think; that this movie has spawn an alternate reality. You see, the successful of the movie is because the original timeline is remain as canon and yet the new timeline also canon. So now in star Trek back story have 3 realm which is Star Trek 1.0 (Original), Star Trek 2.0 (New), and Mirror universe. With all 3 remain intact and alive. The most exciting is because of this superb arrangment the fandom accepted JJ adaption well.
*
there are only two timelines now: the original star trek and this new movie. TNS, DSN, voyager, enterprise and all the other movies fall into the original timeline, just at different point of time.

WTF Kirk promoted to Cadet -> Captain of the Federation Flagship when he's still picking up chicks in bars 3 years before?

in the military, u can advance quickly if u perform in the field. similarly, starfleet conforms to naval structure.

QUOTE
WTF is with the shipyard on Earth when they werent making planet landing capable ships back then.

good question!

QUOTE
WTF is red matter that is capable of creating blackholes

this is explained in the tie-in comic miniseries.

QUOTE
WTF is being right in front of a blackhole and Enterprise just sits in front of it with and not being affected by it.

they're outside the event horizon. this is also explained in the comics.

QUOTE
WTF happened to the blackholes that swallowed Vulcan and Nero's ship? Did it just poof? Blackholes DO NOT poof.

it's still there. blackholes dont get bigger. if u noticed, u cant see the stars behind the "hole". contrary to popular beliefs, black holes are spherical, not a two dimensional like a sinkhole.

QUOTE
WTF is Nero's ship looking like a tentacled octopus when its a frakking mining vessel.

i believe this is in the comics as well.

QUOTE
WTF is with the Romulan's tattoo, didnt even care to explain. Probably just there so they look badass, just like their ship. Hell they dont even look like Romulans.

GODDAMNIT, this just pisses me off so much.

No, cadet = havent yet to graduated from the academy. and no they do not promote them straight to captain and given the most powerful ship in the federation.

*
if i recall correctly, the biggest perk of passing the kobayashi maru test is being promoted to ensign. nobody have ever passed it before as it has no winnable situation. kirk "cheated", although it is within parameters, but not apparent yet during the trial. while the trial is still pending due to the attack by nero, he was promoted to first officer by captain pike. with the absence of captain pike and spock out of commission, he was the acting captain for a brief period of time where he excelled.

yes, this version of kirk excelled much faster than the original kirk.

by the way, this film does have its scientific merits, it's just not embedded in the movie. i've just bought the 4 issue comic miniseries, and it does give u a more detailed idea of what's going on, where and how certain things came the way it is. if u're interested:

i was never really star trek fan... they started off very early in the 50s or 60s... and the settings was soooooo lame IMO. the only star trek i watched is star trek voyager...  voyager looked cute.. not like conventional star trek ships with out-stretched engines.

star trek 09 is good... very nice. but still got some lame stuffs.

they should have made the small shuttle ships better(not boxed shape like cardboard), and the bridge chairs are like office chairs... then.. they were talking bout shields... i never see any shields on the ships. everytime it always kena hit by missiles... and damaged.

y like that?... what are the shields for actually? and y no AI computer (artificial intelligence) present in star trek? any star trek fans here... ans pls... icon_rolleyes.gif
*
1. the shuttle designs follow the original star trek designs. no point changing those coz it'll go out of place. same goes with the bridge design. look up the term "retro-futuristic".

2. shields in star trek have always been invisible. u dont see it until it is hit by an offensive weapon like phasers, disruptors etc. during the early days, shields are a bit primitive. facing an advanced borg-infused battleship from the future such as the narada (nero's ship), they stand no chance. a cluster of those missiles was enough to disrupt the entire shield array, damaging the ship directly.

3. one of the in jokes amongst trekkies about the absence of AI is 2001:space odyssey. or at least google hal9000, the AI that went haywire and killed almost its entire crew.

on the other hand, the ship always had a basic system AI, but not enough to control the entire ship. star trek universe relies on human (or alien) capabilities to control the ship. the reason for this is computers are good at doing repetitive jobs, but would be almost useless in critical situations that involves unique parameters. humans on the other hand are good at handling critical situations, but would bore out and dive into complacency in a repetitive situation. this is the exact same reason why airline jets today still have pilots. did u know that we do have enough technology today to fly and land jets totally without the presence of pilots? biggrin.gif

I never watch any Star Trek. Star Wars yes, Star Trek no. Today my friends invited me to watch it in the cinema and my verdict of it is "It's surprisingly good."

When Kirk stole the antique car, a man on the phone shouted "Just because your mother isnt here..."

Then, a human lady appeared in Vulcan and married a Vulcanian, giving birth to Spock.

Near the ending, at the docks, Ol' Spock said to Spock something about you two (refering to Kirk and Spock) being connected in ways beyond your imagination or something like that.

Does Kirk and Spock have the same mother?
*
if this is an entirely fresh reboot, then it is possible.

but unfortunately, it still follows most of the original timeline. spock's mother was amanda grayson, a school teacher, while kirk's mother, winona kirk, was a starfleet officer.

Why there are no seat belt on the chairs in the bridge?
Captain Kirk and the rest of the crew has to hold tightly to the seat when they are being bombarded or they should be jump over the place to give a dramatic look?
smile.gif

good question. more interestingly, if u look at the pilot and nav's console, their seats arent built in to the floor. more things to fly around during chaos perhaps? LOL.

For that think there's no explanation. This Trek movie is a re-imagining and even Abrams + writers admitted that he didn't watch (or like) Trek to prepare for this movie.

For one there would probably not exist any Romulan miners like Eric Bana and his gang in this movie. From the last TNG movie Nemesis it's explained that the Romulans used Remans mostly as slave miners.

Secondly Romulans as we know it with their humongous shoulder pads and quilted jackets don't exist any more in this timeline biggrin.gif They'll probably change to look like Eric Bana with tats. Wonder how they'll change the whole Klingon culture.
*
actually, there is an explanation, but not in the movies. it's in the tie-in comic books.

romulans is exactly the same in this movie as in the rest of the star trek world. romulans stemmed from the same biological background as the vulcans, but they moved to a different planet a couple of thousand years ago and have evolved independently ever since. during that time, the vulcans developed the logic religion, while romulans keep to their ancestor's more violent and free-for-all ways.

actually, we dont see other romulans in this movie other than those on the narada (nero's ship).

the reason why nero looks very different is bcoz after their home planet destroyed in the future, nero and his crew went on a rampage. they killed the romulans high council bcoz they failed to stop the planet from being destroyed. they wiped out a fleet of klingon ships who're defending their turf. then they wanted to kill spock bcoz he also failed to save the planet. in doing so, nero became a rogue entity. they shaved their heads to purge themselves, and tattooed themselves to remind them of their lost. also, nero has a bite mark on his face, which he got on a klingon prison planet. this will be in the deleted scenes.

i dun understand with the kelvin design. in wiki its stated that according to Gene D's rule, all star trek ship must have paired warp engines... how come kelvin only has one?

perhaps this could shed some light.

Tehnical Development
One naccelle ships for destroyers had one big engineering problem and initially the problem was solved. The standard warp coil was replaced with a dualitic coil. This was essentially 2 sets of coils customized to fit into the one nacelle housing.
This was successful, however many felt that the power curve needed for this system was somewhat ungainly. Lacked efficiency. The problem then had been corrected to an extent by using one active coil and one "Dummy" coil in the housing. The passive, or "Dummy" coil simply reversed the polarity of the active coil's warp field, and therefore "fooled" the warp field into acting as though there were 2 nacelles. The made the power consumption rate of the early Averys and later Saladins much more satisfactory.

wen enterprise removed the core into da blackhole it created HUGE explosion...bt how come when kelvin rammed into nadara, only small explosion... it still had the core right... should't the core explode?
*
if u're talking about the red matter, when kelvin rammed into the narada, the red matter is on the narada. it's safe.

but when the jellyfish (spock's ship) rammed into the narada, it was destroyed. its destruction ignited the red matter, producing the blackhole.

QUOTE(sshahar9 @ May 24 2009, 09:16 AM)
hmm interesting take there zenix...
ill just admit u know more than more than me in general science.
please elaborate further if you can on this theory if it does involve fusion/ fission of the sort.

i think what boggles me is that i just dont know the true nature of what the supposed red matter is... which is why its an easy escape for the story or a 'cheat' to move the story forward.

if just throwing ideas around, maybe its similar to the properties of a white star before it goes supernova or turning to a black hole. blah blah blah... i dont think our level of understanding currently can explain it. which is what makes the red matter more interesting, perplexing and for me atleast, preposterous. just coz we dont know what it actually is and how it interacts, etc.

alanyuppie, im well aware of the nuclear weapons man has produced and used. but its just back to the issue what is actually the red matter is.

a tiny drop can create a black hole that can devour a sun (if i remember correctly from the beginning of movie, for what its supposed to be used for). but then the whole vat of it creates the same size black hole when it crashes into narada. is there a limit to its size and how big it can go? why a 2d black hole and not spherical? why didnt create multiple black holes if it reacted independently, assuming it grow bigger with more of it. why not supermassize black holes? blah blah blah on and on...

what is this supposed red matter is that can create this black hole by fusing with nuclear power?

and yeah, science fiction can  tweak or exaggerate theories but i didnt say i never enjoyed the movie.. i enjoyed it a lot.. but its just bugging me a bit about this red matter, what it actually is. how can it hold so much energy, rip apart space and time continuum. blah blah blah...
*
u dont seem to grasp the whole idea of science fiction here.

when star trek introduced the tricorder back in 1960s, nobody could even perceive such things could ever existed. today, iphones could probably outperform the tricorders, which urges us to think what would a tricorder look like 100 years in the future?

if u look back, red matter is processed from decalithium (not nuclear power by the way). have u even bothered to look up decalithium, and if it actually exists? why not start there? biggrin.gif. star trek gave us quite a lot of things by imagining the unimaginable. that's the whole point. it's fairly safe to let certain details loose so that it could be filled in the future, just like the whole logic of a tricorder was probably totally out of this world in the 60s.

a minute amount of anti-matter that comes into contact with matter would nullify each other in a chain reaction and release a vast amount of energy. the amount of energy released would depend on the amount of anti-matter that comes in contact with matter.

red matter only becomes a black hole when it comes in contact with nuclear matter. so the size of the black hole would depends on how much contact occurred. so no matter if it's a drop or a whole ship of red matter, if there is only so much of nuclear matter that it could react with, it would still create the same size of blackhole.

what happens to the rest of the red matter? well, in theory, the center of the blackhole is a singularity. we dont know what happens to matter in a singularity. one possibility in this story is that it gets transported back in time, although in reality it's extremely unlikely that matter would retain its properties in a singularity.

i recommend doing a bit of reading about blackholes to understand its properties. dying stars arent the only thing that could create blackholes. it's all quantum mechanics.

i have no problems in suspending my disbelief over red matter. if u really wanna talk red matter, then i suggest starting with decalithium ores that power the ships. then venture into how the impulse engines work using powers derived from processed dilithium (not decalithium, mind u biggrin.gif). then go over the transporter and phasers and proton torpedoes.

there are lots of other things u should start questioning before u should even question about red matter, bcoz even to me red matter is quite bizarre to explain. it's the first time ever it has been used in science fiction.

by the way, tricorder is the gadget that looks like a flip-phone. i'm not sure if it's being used in this movie, but it was in earlier movies.

google is ur friend. use it.

red matter IS indeed exclusive to star trek universe. and what i said about it was not my own opinion, but rather reference from other trek websites that i couldnt be bothered to add here. just google it, u'll have no problem stumbling upon it. i repeatedly recommend reading on quantum mechanics bcoz it borrows a lot of concepts from there. ofcourse, it doesnt exist, neither does decalitihium or dilithium ores that power the starships.

u assume red matter is a simple matter. i assure u it's not. although its behaviour when in contact with other matters werent explained, but it's pretty clear it alone is a volatile material, which is why it's kept in a special containment chamber. if not, the crew of narada wouldve taken it out of the jellyfish and store it on board the narada.

explosions might some way ignite the red matter, but it was when it comes into contact with nuclear matter (not power, not energy, not radiation), it would produce a black hole. since the jellyfish was designed to inject the red matter into a sun, then it would be simple enough explanation that the jellyfish actually carries both red matter and nuclear material for producing a blackhole.

it's not entirely made up from air. the idea for such matters came from the realm of quantum physics, where matter can exist and cease to exist by a simple random event. matter does not behave in the way we commonly believe. read "schrodinger's cat", an idea of how the observer can influence the outcome of the existence of matter.

if u think about it, how the heck could an observer influence an object's existence? bizarre isnt it? all it takes is a google click and a few minutes of reading.

btw, ur analogy on blackholes behaving like adding water to more water isnt entirely accurate. here's a better analogy: to sustain fire, u need fuel and oxygen. if u have a vast amount of fuel but little oxygen, u wont create a BOOM, but a mere puff. u need more red matter and more nuclear matter to produce bigger blackholes.

if u wanna talk real world, there IS NO red matter. period. why push it? biggrin.gif

such matters cannot and does not exist.
