What goes to the exterior design, the company representatives stated exclusively for SMAPE.com that the current designer trend witnessed in N81, N85, N96 and a number of future models will be continued for a serious period of time, reserving the use of metal to Eseries line products. It's hard to say if this is actually good or bad, our task is to tell you about the Nseries outlook for the future. As long as the current design sells well, Nokia aren't going to invent something new. The second point is about the positioning policy. While Samsung is invading the hi-end segment with products like i8510 INNOV8, Nokia are doing their best to take over the mid-end product range, facing little to no competition. Models like i8510 or N96 almost never score high sales, while N79, N82 and N85 form the mass segment of multimedia devices which constitute a serious share of the company's sold products. The future growth of this share in the next year will owe much to the mentioned mass coming of mid-end multimedia handsets. That doesn't mean exactly that Nokia will no longer need a flagship to lead the product line; the most powerful handset in this series is to arrive later, in the first quarter of 2009, and this policy is fully justified.

Source: SMAPE

base on the bold line statement, if users wanna something fresh from nokia, we need to teach them a lessons, so that they can roll out new fresh design (as if they are hiding it, wait till the exact moment to release it sweat.gif )

Xenon is better because it produces brighter flash compared to LED. But in this case, there might be some improvement over the dual LED on the Nokia N85. Besides, LED can be use as flashlight unlike Xenon. Which is an advantage for LED. There are pros and cons.

haha....coz Nokia know, although some basher (including me) said this phone looks bad n bla3...bt after all it still give the best all-rounder performance at reasonable price (perhaps), even when compare to c905, its only advantage js it 8mpx cam n xenon...if compare to INNOV8, the samsung offering a lot better but it come with hefty price tag sweat.gif
i think nokia has other design or perhaps revolution/innovation design, but they dun wanna release it, becoz why wanna offer it when they still can make profit (not like SE n Motorola), n this re-cycle specs from n95 still prove its worthness n can provide cost effective....marketing strategy rite..

not always difinately better for camphone
coz xenon cannot be use in video, drains more battery, n double LED flash (base on mobile-review) perform better in close up pictures

from the photo it really looks appealing, the recycling design wise,i quite like it ,the 1st time i saw n81 i oredi fall in love with this design, but finaly i end up with bought a n82 as my final choice coz n81 only 2mp tongue.gif

not always difinately better for camphone
coz xenon cannot be use in video, drains more battery, n double LED flash (base on mobile-review) perform better in close up pictures

oo thanks for the enlightment..
i didnt know that, always thought xenon is better, coz i never had a camphone with xenon flash blush.gif

w980 n w902 with clear audio tech might be better in music department compare to the n85
n85 sound quality identical to n78 n n96 which is slightly better than n95/n95 8gb

like what i said in N81 thread earlier this week, i would expect RM2200 like that when launched. Do not direct convert currency if it's UK pound or Euro, they will cost more if you direct convert

Added on September 3, 2008, 9:40 ambtw smashpOp, thanks you for info, but how you try on the spot to check FPU and 3D acceleration?? just wanna find out tongue.gif

also, is the speaker as nice as N81?? i think all of us here are worried about the speaker quality as well..

tq again

thank you squall_kay, this is a very detailed review indeed...
also, it mention that the built quality is next to perfect, but when i checked N81 8GB review at the same site, they say the same thing similar things as well. As a n81 user, i'd say that the slide quality is just normal, one which really need protection from user.

also, can anyone briefly explain the result on JBenchmark??
i see that N85 still have quite a big score gap compared to n82(n95 have totally same result as n82), so i am still quite worried that it will lag in games...

tq

i oso wondered coz base on the benchmark it seems n95 hv higher score, but from video in youtube, n85 seems faster n more responsive than n95

my N81 also have faster menu respond after boot compared to N95..
sometimes the respond time is not important, cos the 3D acceleration chip and other power features are used in games and apps

i reckon n85 will have a stronger market over n96 in malaysia, at least ... the pricing of n96 will be massive as all would guess- 2.9" screen and more-than-enough 16 gb internal memory.. its main attraction, tv receiver function (dvb-h) could become its downfall.. the reasons are the availability and coverage of the service...

the n85, on the other hand, will be a hit here..

FYI, i do not own nokia, but i know how the price goes...
direct convert from euro or pound will always cost 20% more, if you don believe me, go check out those hardware prices, or prices from other phones.
The reason is because this phone is aiming for mid-range market, and 450EURO for ppl there are consider a ok-ok price, but if you direct convert here, it's 2.2k edi, and 2.2k in malaysia is consider high end phone. i don think nokia is going to screw their own market up just to again a little more money on their price, i think they are aiming for volume sales this time, so the price should not exceed 2k if they want to do so(or price will drop within 3 months to less then 2k)

even if they come out with 2.2k price, so what?? i did used the word EXPECT, and expectations are just on personal thoughts.
plus, this phone kinda remind me the time when nokia release N78, they are aiming for mid-range market also, and the 2.2K price is consider high end to malaysia.

i am looking forward for this phone too... it's not launched in M'sia yet but in Italy only...

It's selling at about RM 2750 at Italy...

Heard that all Nokia stores already have the N85 dummy set for demonstration... keep your fingers crossed, hopefully it will be released within the next 2 weeks!

Added on October 9, 2008, 9:56 pmN85 is available for sale in Singapore at S$860... around RM 2k only!

i'm just hoping it will be around 2.2k to 2.5k only... ORI lah...

it can't be 2.8k... otherwise Nokia flagship N96 can sink already... and I don't think Nokia wants it to sink as it just got released 1 month+ !

N85 is available now... it's selling in US at $668 (MYR 2338 @ 3.50 rate) at the moment

http://thenokiablog.com/2008/10/12/nokia-n85-now-available/

Nokia store in Cheras Leisure Mall said should be available in M'sia in 1 week time, or maybe not, and they dunno 'bout the price... let's keep our finger crossed it will be around RM 2.2k only!

OLED lifetime is the main issue here.. 14000 hrs only.. i never switch off my phone.. so it only lasts 583 days?? that's like so short for an expensive phone!

personal review? oh well, i really dun like to write essay, i'll just put down in point form:-

- phone package comes with 3-months free GPS voice navigation, 1 n-gage game voucher, 1 tv-output cable, 1 wired headset, 1 USB charger, USB cable & user manuals + CD

- keypad is flat but so far have no problems in typing sms

- D pad buttons are a bit hard to press, probably b'cos i'm not used to it since i've used my 6680 for almost 4 years

- navi wheel is quite sensitive

- picture quality is awesome, so is the video quality, hardly can find blurry effects after you record it, exactly same like when you are recording during playback

- speaker is excellent, quite loud, but when put it to 100% full blast, can hear slight cracking sounds, but just 70% is already loud enough for a normal hearing

- slider is firm

- menu transition effect is excellent

- charges via USB port, so charge anywhere you want as long as there's USB port! no more hassle in finding 3-pin socket port!

- this babe is one big fingerprint magnet... tongue.gif

- dual LED, quite bright when it flashes, may not be as bright as Xenon flash but bright enough to capture when you in low-light environtment

- fm transmitter is really one big feature, u can play the songs in your phone via your car radio

okay enough, that's all i can write for the time being, i'm still exploring it!

that's provided if you let your screen on 24x7...

haih ya those lifetime thingy no need to worry one lah... if u calculate exactly LIKE THAT, then of coz 1 year+ later kantoi lah.... just like talktime, i used my 6680 for almost 4 years and i'm a above average usage user but my total talktime is only 336 hours (*#92702689#), so i only talk on my phone for 14 days out of 1460 days instead? sweat.gif

they all the same LOL

is it u wanna compare N95/N95 8GB with n85 ah? I can see the specs almost the same and diff is only the OLED screen and FP2 with built in FM trans, and don forget USB charging.

Heard the RAM startup is only 78MB but IMHO it's enuf memory to run a couple of programs.

personal review? oh well, i really dun like to write essay, i'll just put down in point form:-

- fm transmitter is really one big feature, u can play the songs in your phone via your car radio

okay enough, that's all i can write for the time being, i'm still exploring it!

i have bought both AP and ori sets in my entire life...apparently the ori set that i bought is more troublesome than the ap sets.
so my next phone would be the AP set, it's not like AP sets are clone phone from china, it's still from nokia. the only difference is the warranty availabality.

AP set can claim warranty as well....i never found any AP set with no warranty at all laugh.gif
the only problem if you bought the AP phone in KL but you stay in sabah, then you have to travel to KL to claim your warranty.
otherwise, it should be no problem for AP set.

it js u hv to check certain the ap warranty type, certain cover most/all part for 1 year or more but certain only cover the transceiver for 1 year, others (lcd, battery, charger n etc) might js 1-3months only. lucky here, certain seller do provide good ap warranty type.

I never bought AP before. Is AP set good?
I was thinking to get an AP set for my wife. Almost confirm le, but then my satisfaction was crushed.
I received a PM on 10pm yesterday and price was XXYY, suddenly this morning PM again saying price increase now XXZZ.
You know what, when I checked the seller thread, price reduced to XXFF.

RM80 movement in price. One moment saying price increase while reducing it another moment. All in less than 24hrs. I cannot believe that.
Now thinking if I should go original since Im really fedup kao kao.

BTW, can N85 user feedback a bit?
Is the front keypad ok? I tried N96 and it was horrible. Not what I would expect as the dummy keys are way better than the phone itself.

Nvm, it's settled now... I've take it as misunderstanding on my part but Im sure of what I read and what they have posted. Maybe some of them should make it loud and clear just like some other did and by listing out all different version of phone they are selling and their warranty period instead of just posting some attractive ads about prolonged warranty and one standard pricing but in the end, the extra warranty comes with additional charges. Just make buyer confused of the pricing difference.

Back to the topic,

Any user can give me any feedback regarding the whole phone? Seem like some original sellers are giving good pricing on it. I think I will waste another couple hundred to get Zitron/Avaxx set since its for my wife.

Actually I asked about the AP vs Original is to know whether AP set they will charge anything or not if major operation like LCD malfunction or slider damaged. Also want to know whether they used original parts or what. Scare after buying if got problem, and worse if dealer give lcly face, really dulan when buying expensive phone.

AP & Zitron/Avaxx phones are all made by Nokia factories. If I am you, I will definitely choose AP bcos

1) price much much lower; why must I pay few hundred RM more for the exact same fone?
2) warranty issues can be settled easily if u choose to buy in shops and not stalls/online types.
3) for new fones like n85, it is impossible to find imitation or refurbished fones.
4) ur relationship wt dealers largely depends on how u interact wt them. dun xpect all the great service, all the time.

About the OLED lifespan issue, I got my own thought.

Let's say the OLED lifespan is 100 hours, it doesn't mean the screen will die after 100 hours. But it means it could light up for 100 hours before it die. So some said that the N85 OLED could last for around 2 years only, but if most of the time your phone OLED is under power saving mode, I don't think it will deduct it's life, so maybe it will last for 4 years or longer.

I don't know, just my piece of thought. Don't blame me ok? brows.gif

I'm not 100% agree though. The reason is:

1. Some AP dealer might change the accessories with a fake one or replacing certain partswithout you even realize it after u have purchased it.
2. Some warranty given by AP company only covers 3months LCD/accessories/battery.
3. Some AP companies dont even wanna "layan" you if your HP has problems and keep on delaying warranty claims.
4. Worst thing if you buy AP sets from outside of KL, there are some AP company which you never heard before and most probably shops themselves who issue the warranty.

I didn't say that AP is not good, but must beware when purchasing AP sets. Sometimes u get lucky, sometimes not smile.gif

well, those thgs "might" happen to zitron/avaxx sets too, IF the dealer or reseller is dishonest enuff.
if u know somethg abt the world arnd u, den u must know no matter wat,

u must be well-informed (dun b lazy bum), and make worth ur money u paying.

i found a way to drain the battery very quickly.... tongue.gif

1) keep the packet connection alive to your MS exchange email for live updates
2) play music and transmit it via the FM transmitter to your car radio
3) use the GPS

all at the same time.... biggrin.gif

One of the reason is the AMOLED. They say the cost is cheaper because it doesn't need something like... backlight or don't know what to call..

i oso dunno where is the photo i bluetooth it from n85 to my n95.
not really big problem but i find the detail loss after compression. n95 has better details if were to compare side by side in the PC. and the AMOLED screen, no doubt it is beautiful, doesnt show the same way when take picture. in the phone screen itself, there noises... lots of them. but when transfer back to pc, the noise is not that bad, only thing i found out is the detail.

then when i take picture, even i switch off the flash, it still uses the light. not sure if it is as flash or guidance, but it is sure annoying. for me at least.

my bet it is the firmware's problem. not the hardware. so i hope there is a firmware update to kawtim it.

So you didn't face the problem like flares and blurry as in the link i posted?
About the flash, I don't know much about it but maybe the light is as guidance and allow your camera to get focus on certain point. Maybe you try to change the scene option (night mode?) and try again?

I dont really know if that itself is a problem. Its just normal to have ghost image if you took picture of moving objects. That is down to the shutter timing and if its slow, you are bound to have that.

If Im not mistaken, nowadays high end Nokia phone has ISO setting. Play with the ISO setting to reduce the noise.

Dont expect these to perform as a digital camera. After all, they serve their purpose.

Does this mean that the camera software is unable to select the optimum shutter speed for the situation? Compression is software-based too, no? Other than that, there are no other hardware issues plaguing the camera for the N85?

Since the problems may be solved thru a firmware update, does Nokia release updates very frequently?

N96 firmware has been updated few times since it launch, so I dont think Nokia will forget the N85 also.

A few questions here regarding buying N85 AP set

1. Are we able to update firmware on our own? (over the air)
2. Does is come bundled with 8GB memory card?
3. Are you able to use ovi such as Nokia Maps, n-gage etc?

Just got my hands onto a N85 just now.
LOL... quite impressed but I think it will suit gal better as the size is small.

1. Keys - the feedback is good but since the size is small, keys that are located to the edge feel hard to press down for me. My wife smaller fingers has no problem. The best feature has to be the keylock/unlock button at the side. Nokia has learn something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. UI - I think compared to my last N70, its much faster. I used my friend's N73ME before and I think its much fluid with animation as well.

3. Camera - Took a couple pictures. Im impressed with the night shot that I did in my car after getting the phone just now. Pretty good for a phone camera. As for the noise, I think Nokia set the ISO pretty high. Its very noticeable when taking shot of white background/stuffs (ie. my Acer Gemstone keyboard). I think Nokia firmware can fix this problem if many user complaint about it.

Im doing more test on the camera.

As you can see from the pictures, having high ISO add too much noise to the picture. However since the ISO setting is limited, there is not much choice to choose from but I would say these pictures are pretty good. If you compare the pic taken using Auto mode vs my noflash-highiso, the noise is similar, just that its brighter making the noise more noticeable. The filesize also doubled when using high iso which is crazy because it does nothing but adding a lot of noise to the picture. Camera phone is just for taking fun pic and was never meant to replace digicam by any mean.

So you didn't face the problem like flares and blurry as in the link i posted?
About the flash, I don't know much about it but maybe the light is as guidance and allow your camera to get focus on certain point. Maybe you try to change the scene option (night mode?) and try again?
I hope the real slider mechanism won't have that problem.. a bit worried.  blink.gif

sorry..i just realized i typed DUMMIES..
that 2 times i ACTUALLY played with the REAL WORKING UNITS...
so ..i guess the wobbly slider applies to all..?

I have say the slider is pretty good compared to 6500s. N96 slider probably more tight than N85 but that doesn't mean it's poor. The package is same with 8gb card and the ngage stuff. I'm typing this using this phone. Using wireless. It's kinda hard to use for me due to the size of the keys. Secondly it's because i have long fingernail to use with my M600. One bad thing about the accelerometer is the dimming of the keypad when rotate to side.

The packages contain usually the normal profile sounds (e.g. ringing tones, message alerts, clock alert, calendar alarm) but also sounds for phone handling (e.g. fold open, fold close) and menu events (enter menu, leave menu).

Your phone supports audio themes if you can find this icon in the menu (personalization/themes). If your phone supports audio themes you can download additional theme packages from this page.”

yerp. i do agree, but looking at positive side, n95/n95 8gb has been around more than 1 year, their FW already grow matured enough, so i believe n hope, Nokia also can do the same thing to n85, improving its software/FW (but in face pace manner smile.gif ) so that this n85 can perform better in imaging n photo browsing (zooming).

I tried the Nokia N85 and I like the improved interface. However the transition made it a little slow and stuttering. Hope new software updates will improve in this area. I like OLED screen although it is a little on the warmer side in terms of color temperature.

Only one major problem now is that S60 FP2 hasnt been cracked up yet. So you wont be able to install anything unless you self-sign with some help. It sucks when the security is so tight.

Hi there, just got myself a N85 two days back. Been happy with it.

So far I do not have any major issues with the phone like those listed in the link provided by craxors above.

Only thing I have is :

1. Bluetooth headset keep disconnecting and reconnecting.
2. If u set to ask for security code when different simcard is inserted, it will ask u for the security code everytime you switch on the phone irrespective of whether the same or different simcard is in your phone.

So far, there's no restart problem since using it for the third day now. No restart even when charging using usb data cable or charger.

I am using the supplied 8Gb microSDHC Class 4 (Nokia)

Im really looking into upgrading into the n85 so far i kinda like my n78 interms power useage..i really think the new FP2 has improve lots on power consumption n useage. It seems like Andybravo got some way to get cheap Zitron set. Less than RM2k but without 8GB it seem.

Added on November 15, 2008, 10:46 amIn my honest opinion, its strange that the price drop so fast. Maybe Nokia predicting market condition will worsen thus reducing the price to earn as much while they still can. For me, I really have to give my wife her present, so I buy early but with some premium lor. At least special cos not much people using it.

For personal use, I think waiting game is correct. Firstly, price dropping to around 1.5k, and secondly for now, no one has cracked FP2 therefore there is no way to install the application and games. If you are switching from FP1, better rethink.

I bought a CSL AP set from a shop and its expensive...RM1980. Its full ori Nokia (Malaysia) version and comes with 15 mth warranty. I was one of the early adopters hence the high price but I think its worth all of the money. The screen quality is awesome and some features are superb especially the FM transmitter. Playing radio, MP3 and videos routing its audio to the car stereo. You can also trick your friend by transmitting some weird audio clip over their frequency and they jump ehehehehe.

The sellers in forum may have a lower price but I have enquired some of them but unable to get stock. In actual fact the AP price should be around RM1700 to RM2030 depending on which AP company and ORI set priced around RM2450 (+/-).

Hopefully the new firmware update will fix these problems. Planning to get this phone and I hope it won't let me down tongue.gif .
*
The current firmware as it is, does not pose any major concern. So far, all I have is a very minor and negligible issue.

QUOTE(intune @ Nov 15 2008, 06:42 AM)
What is the most problematic firmware for n85..? Im really looking into upgrading into the n85 so far i kinda like my n78 interms power useage..i really think the new FP2 has improve lots on power consumption n useage. Also i beliew the single CPU ARM11 really is fast..to bad it doesnt do video out. nevertheless 6220 clasic use the same processor but has video out which puzzles me..
*
Most problematic I facing is everytime u switch off the phone and when ON back, it will ask u for a security code if u set to ask the code on different sim inserted. Thing is, u don't switch off n on often rite? And even if u do, u can always set it to not ask for code for the moment, untill the new firmware is ready.

Overall the performance is fast, operating the menu is not laggy, audio quality is good. Video at high quality still plays smoothly and does not make the phone laggy. Love this phone. I have always been a SE supporter. Was contemplating btwn SE C905 and NK N85. Only diff is SE is S40 and NK is S60. For SE, you cannot install other GPS software and S60 u get lots of software. I installed Garmin for GPS software instead of using the Nokia Maps which only comes with 90 day trial. Garmin works great man! thumbup.gif

yeah, the price drop fast. Could it be there is some issue with the phone or Zitron is manipulating the price? sad.gif

New owner, please give some comment on the phone. Thanks

zitron always manupulating prices.. i dont whats their profit margin like..but from the price they selling its crazy.. Govt should look into zitron and its price strategy because its definitely using is monopoly of being the main distributoir to its advantage. Its been forever like this. so people tend to but AP phone now...rather then Zitron..in a way zitron is loosing out..but do they care? i guess not..

your wife's n85, got any problem so far??

I dont know why suddenly so many questions were asked about N85 reliability. What I can say is never hang or whatsoever. Since my wife seldom make calls, only using it to listen to music most of the time. Battery last 4days for her usage. Quite impressive.

the ori price never drop fast la....same as when i bought 3 weeks ago. still at RM2.4k roughly.

and i do not have the auto restarting problem. just that usb charging WITH transfer of music media somehow needs a restart of the phone for the music player to work. i've now installed PC Suite and will see if this phenomena still crops up...

One funny thing with the media player is that unable to detect the mp3 that I transfer onto the memory card. However if use filemanager, can play manually. I suspect some sort of licencing.

I do believe we should go for the AP set as it is cheaper (hell a lot) compare Original. The retail price set by Nokia is 450 Euro for n85, so you can imagine how much you save if you get an AP set. Warranty shouldn't be a problem if you have access to those AP company easily icon_rolleyes.gif .

well the 2nd hand price may not look good but its actually due to the public which is mis-informed of the OLED. Typical OLED lasts 500,000 hrs of use and that would equate to almost the lifetime of the phone...heck some other parts of the phone don't even lasts as long.

What u can do to preserve the screen is to not turn on any standby screen like the clock and such.

I heard that n85 has photo zooming problem. It's very slow in zooming photos. But I played with n85 in Nokia Showroom and I felt that FP2 is very fast in zooming photo, it's like instant without waiting time like what in my n82. If the photos in memory card, can it be zoomed fast?

Purposely try the zoom function for u...

The speed was superb. Zooming in each time took less than 1 sec. and the picture was taken in 5 Mega pixel, highest quality the N85 is capable. I am suspecting the review unit has multiple apps running in the background while the reviewer is zooming, since S60 OS is capable of multitask. But for me, when the phone is not multitask, the zooming function i think even some digital camera may not be as fast as the N85.

Zooming in as well as going left, right, up & down in the zoomed picture is less than a second. Its real fast.

I agree with u there. I usually choose AP with its company available locally in my state.

But more importantly, go for reputable AP company. Like my case, I went to a good AP company that sells be the N85 which is fully original Nokia set and its exactly the same as the Zitron / Avaxx unit meaning , its localised for Malaysia as well. The T9 is also capable of Eng, Malay, Chinese. Also it readily comes with MMS, GPRS, 3G settings for the local telcos. Also the phone and all the accessories comes with the authentic Nokia sticker.

This AP unit is of course more expensive than other AP company's but its still a lot cheaper compared to the Official Ori unit, but then mine's just as Ori as the Official one.

Ic... thx for the result. Anyway, when I played with the phone in Nokia showroom, the phone has several apps running and the music player seems to be hanged. Eventhough, the zooming speed is still fast. I think my next phone gonna be n85. But I read the review from GSMarena, saying that eventhough n79 and n85 has same camera but Nokia somehow make n85 camera algorithm worsen. As a result, n85 is not able to produce good quality photos compare to other top 5MP cameraphone.

hrm...I can't say much about the camera quality as compared to other 5mp phone cams coz i dun own any other 5mp phone cams except the docomo SH906iTV which is 5.2MP autofocus but then the pics from the N85 is still better than the docomo (which is a SHARP manufactured phone). Overall I m happy with the N85 produced pictures.

I know this aint a yardstick for headphone sound quality, but i find the onboard speakers horrible. But i guess this is more on the output itself rather than the phone's audio processing, so i guess a decent pair of headphones would do the trick.

I tested the picture zoom the other day at Pavilion, no problems whatsoever. Only thing i noticed that while using the navi-wheel (?) to scroll thru pictures and whatnot, there's a noticeable lag. Is this normal for all Symbian phones?

I dont think the navi wheel is rubbish. Instead I like it more than using the dpad. Just turn off the BREATHING option when turning on naviwheel. It makes it go through each icon slowly in case you are not familiar with it. With navi wheel, I dont have to vouch for certain holding position while the phone is not slide open in order to browse through the menu. Quite disappointed is the navi wheel works for certain menu while some are disabled. If they could enable it for all of the menu, I would buy another one for myself to use.

The speaker of the N85 is not crap speaker. LOUD doesnt mean quality. N85 speaker is stereo mode. Among the best I have heard. The stock headphone is a bit of a disappointment bacause the lack of bass. However, once I plug in my Mylar XB, totally rocks... I can sell my ipod nano liao. I can say with 100%, beats Ipod SQ.

I think what u r referring to is the Nokia Maps software which comes with the N85 with 90-days free voice navigation after which, u've gotta pay for the full software. GPS receiving is free and fully unlocked.

how far do you need to put your phone away from the radio for it to receive the transmission anyway? just leave it on the radio will do the job...

and i don't think your distance of yourself with the radio receiver on your car is way further than 1m... it works perfectly with playing music & videos

no need to pay, however, you must make sure your GPS settings is not NETWORK-BASED, you must turn it off manually in your phone settings, otherwise, each time u turn on your GPS, your GPRS/3G connection is on also to assist your phone in getting more accurate positioning from your telco, which could cost you a bomb if you are on the move (except if you have unlimited data package subscribed for your phone)

to do this :-> Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods > tick off Network based

but i think sometimes we have no choice. i mean, the whole idea of having AGPS is to have quick lock so we move out quicker right?

It depends on your situation some people does not need accurate position immediately some does.. so at least on nokia phoes you have these options..

IMHO ..nokias transmitter is weak..thats on my N78 anyways.. you have to be really near the receiver or radio to transmit the signal better.. i think this has something to do with battery efficiency.. blush.gif

Here the photo quality for Nokia N82 vs Nokia N85 vs Nokia N95 8GB vs Nokia N96 Camera Flash Test in Darkness. nothing can match xenon flash.

and

Nokia N85, N96, N79 - Does Double LED Stand A Chance Against The N82?

hopefully newer firmware of N85 can enchance the image quality of the phone biggrin.gif

Just got my N85, here's the summary:

I love:
- The design and form factor
- The almighty OLED screen
- The 5MP camera
- Decent build quality
- Being an All rounder - GPS, Wifi, 3G, FM Transmitter, you name it

I loath
- A bit too thick
- Keypad is quite hard to press
- Fingerprint magnet

I heard N82 excels in taking photo, but never actually compare it (just bear in mind that N85 camera is a lot better than most of the hp camera in the market)

Btw, regarding the FM transmitter signal strength, i don't have any problem with it. Managed to hook it up to my car radio while my N85 is in d pocket biggrin.gif

For Darkness, yeah, it is.
But how often do someone really takes pic in darkness.
Maybe useful for taping on bed video laugh.gif

Other than that, N82 has no other pros compared to N85 except its price tag.
I still think N85 has some room for improvement.

The most important one is to make NAVIWHEEL available for all types of menu. Secondly, please allow me to use the keypad when browsing whenever the phone was rotated. Lastly, please reduce the price again thumbup.gif

hrm...no issue with that....maybe mine's still new. Only been a week owning it. The slide down (to expose the media keys) is a tad tight though. hmm.gif

Tried again just now with the phone slide up (showing the numeric pad) and tapping n pressing the Eng Call button. I tried softly and harder, both do not give any squeaking sound. In fact, I cannot feel the top piece and the bottom piece of the phone moving (i.e. getting closer to each other) at all. Its a very solid slide mechanism. thumbup.gif

Thanks for the link doomx, after looking through the video and testing and inspecting my N85. I have a wobble on the top (screen) part and the rest of the areas none. Even tried what the link said (in closed mode and try pressing the lower right part as well as in multimedia mode) all do not exhibit any wobble.

In closed part, I have a slight wobble on the top part but its a really really slight wobble, I think 1mm or even less and its not so bad until can make a click-clack sound. It wobbled very slightly but doesn't make any sound. It is soo minor and makes me think this is normal for a sliding phone. A slide mechanism must have a slight free-play otherwise, the sliding would not be smooth. Mine's pretty normal.

I think N85 may have units manufactured in different region of the world and they may churn out different quality handsets. Mine although is AP, is the same model as the Malaysian Ori Zitron / Avaxx set which I think do not possess such issues.

So far, been using it for a week and I am a heavy user (calls a lot, watch videos a lot and MP3 average). I sync a lot, my 8Gb microSD is almost full. So first week owning it, I sure meddle with it a lot. So far, the phone never hangs and never restart on me even while synching and charging.

Only thing worth complaining is Security code always ask when phone turned on even simcard is not changed. And bluetooth handsfree keeps disconnecting and reconnecting which can be eliminated when u switch your handsfree off and on back.

I think both the above problem can be addressed via firmware so no worries. Overall, I am satisfied with the N85. smile.gif

that im aware of and besides i think that it is no problem. later i go search the source i was reading review of it.

ok i when digging all my history and found it

N85 wobbly slider

after reading make sure see the video. thanks
*
So thats wobbly?
Yeah, it behaves like that.
I dont find it a problem though. Its good that even when you press the bottom part, it still doesnt scratch against the bottom part. If you tap the bottom of the plastic (below d pad) can see it moves a little. Its a design problem. I dont think you can make it a solid piece when all the keys are in 4 different direction and if they had used a solid piece, it would break after prolong usage.

i felt using the USB data cable to charge takes a bit more time to get to full...forgot how long though...

using the adaptor (3 pin) to charge took mine around 2 hours i think. thumbup.gif

Got my N85 today from nokia store.

Tried charging through the USB cable, and didn't encounter reboot issue. Seems like we are no affected.

So far so good.

At the moment, testing out all the advertised features.... smile.gif

N79 and N85 both has similar spec, but N85 has AMOLED screen (awesome). N85 got dual slide like the famous N95.

Those buying AP sets, is Nokia Map included in the package? I asked my friend who is a phone shop dealer, saying AP have something in difference like cannot fully support some software due to like non-ori firmware sort of thing compared to Ori. Just wondering if its true. Cause the prices for both is quite a margin.

EDIT : Not to mention the battery might not be original anymore with AP set.

How about the battery included? Still original? Also I bet they take out the 8GB microSD as well. Any rumour that AP set can't install certain java programs? Just want to know what's the major difference in AP and Ori set. More comments will be more justified. Am considering either to get this one or just wait for Nokia 5800. Downgrading from Samsung Omnia though. sweat.gif

wow thanks for the link...now only i know there's this menu transition effects....i've been missing this for like 1 week + of owning it duh.

on the wifi thing, did u set your SSID to be hidden? If it is then you would have this prob. To solve it, have your wifi router set to show SSID, use your N85 to detect it and connect to it. After successful connect, then only set your SSID in your router to hide. Then set your N85 Network Status to "Hidden". To do that, go go Tools > Settings > Connection > Destinations > Internet > Edit your access point > Under Network Status : Change to Hidden. This should solve it. It did for mine.

1 : Nope, i don't think there's any setting that can set that.
2 : The S60 is a multi task system and yes, there's the hassle of having the apps not quitting when u press the Red (End Call) button. There's no setting to overcome this as well. I also find it a problem everytime u wanna press lots of BACK button till u come to EXIT button. That is after u go deep in to certain menu.

I bought an AP set. All are original including the battery. Although i read AP sets do not come with Nokia Maps of something like that, my AP unit comes with it. The voice navigation only has 90 days trial though. But the ORI set also has till 90 days as well. U can have a full version replacing it after expiring though...but need to google lar. Personally I find the Nokia Maps not very useful due to the not updated map (one time it tells me to go thru a one way street in the opposite direction - although the road used to be 2 way, it ain't now). So I am using Garmin Mobile XT which has a much updated map. Gotta google for those info though.

My AP set's firmware and region code is exactly the same as malaysian Ori unit, firmware update would not be a problem. So when buyin AP sets, choose wisely.

Yeah, me thinks the sound quality (off the speaker) is not so good too. I heard its great on N96 though. Might wanna consider that model.

All accs, battery, microSD card, charger, cable all ori for mine. All java apps can install. For my case, the diff btwn Ori n AP is only on the Price & Warranty.

@yupio

Thanks for the reply. Some more questions. Is your warranty by Telstar? And how much did you bought yours?

Still considering this or upcoming XpressMusic 5800.

Added on November 23, 2008, 5:45 pmReporting 1st incident of N85 freeze.

I've switched on Menu Transition and for the first time, when a call comes in, the ringer did not ring but the screen shows Incoming Call but then I press the green (receive call button), the phone did not respond. All other buttons pressed also did not get the phone to respond. End up, the phone auto reboot with the NOKIA word and white background then goes into main standby screen.

I go into Call logs, the call did not register as missed or incoming call.

Overall with the menu transition switched on, the interface seems lagged. Will try it for a few days, if it gives prob, will switch off. shakehead.gif

1. This I can help you. Its the same for every phone. Instead of making the shortcut point to messaging, change it to New Message. This way after you send the msg, back to front page. No all people know this trick.

I asked my friend who is a phone shop dealer, saying AP have something in difference like cannot fully support some software due to like non-ori firmware sort of thing compared to Ori. Just wondering if its true. Cause the prices for both is quite a margin.

EDIT : Not to mention the battery might not be original anymore with AP set.

last time when to phone shop asking for AP set, they said need to add another RM50 if want to use the nokia map...if ori set, no need because already installed...i ask some sellers here in garage sales, they also said same thing...
then i ask is there any others function that are not in AP set...they said only the nokia map..others are same...

I really dont know got such difference. Im not using GarminXT also. I also din ask Renee about it. But my nokia map is definately working. Just install Nokia map and download all the map you want la. I already loaded South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and HK map.

Hai All of you..
i just wanna ask your opinion about this Hp..
i just see and try the handphone at Nokia,The Garden beside Mid Valley and in my 1st impression was so "wow!" drool.gif  but then, after i try the speaker, the audio quality just sound like "pecah" doh.gif . So, i wanna ask, is that true the Sound Quality of the N85 quite not so good as N95. Because early next Dec08 i wanna buy a new N Series. Now i use My N73 with i very satisfactory after i purchase it thumbup.gif . So,can you guy's help me about the problem or give me an idea which hand phone suitable with my criteria? rclxub.gif
*
I dont find the sound pecah. In fact better than my sis N78. Just a bit softer than N78.

thanks yupio for the settings but i still can't really make use of the wifi. Do we use infrastructure or ad-hoc mode? I can detect my SSID and connect to it. but when i browse the net... it loads like a few hundred bytes.. then it'll stop completely. just hanging there. other times it'll just stuck at 0kb... anyone can help on the settings?
*
I think your router wireless performance is poor or you got many interference. I have no problem at all. When using my old router, the range is not very good and speed also ok ok nia. But since I change my router to Extreme N, range is good and transfer speed is also 2~3x faster.

No prob bro....mine's CSL

Added on November 23, 2008, 5:21 pm

yeah, my AP set will be able to update fine as its exactly the same as the Zitron / Avaxx set. For a confirmed answer, will have to wait till a firmware update is available.
My CSL AP set have 12 months warranty on LCD, 15 months warranty everything else.
It'll be Infrastructure mode....funny though, mine works just fine...try other browser??

Honestly after using it for more than a month, still no hang or whatsoever.

1. This I can help you. Its the same for every phone. Instead of making the shortcut point to messaging, change it to New Message. This way after you send the msg, back to front page. No all people know this trick.
i mean when we replying msg...
if send new msg, its ok..after send it will go to front page..but if i replying msg, it will go back to inbox folder... blush.gif

Im not sure whether its the accelerometer being not sensitive enough or what. But to make sure it rotate each time, hold the phone straight up sure will rotate.

i think u got same problem with me...

its true that your inbox is empty...but, the phone will detect all the messages from your SIM as new message..that's why the icon keep blinking...either u delete all your message from your SIM, or u can read all the message again...your choice...

i "malas" so i just delete all...its work for me thou... biggrin.gif
